Designer Marcin Rusak created "Plant Pulses," a sculptural and sonic installation for Perrier-Jouët. Plant Pulses, on display at Faena Beach in Miami Beach during Art Basel, translates ultrasonic signals emitted by plants during stress and recovery into visual, luminous, and auditory elements. At its center is a resin-encased botanical sculpture that functions as a modern herbarium. Developed in Marcin Rusak's Warsaw studio, Plant Pulses incorporates vine cuttings, European birthwort, and white clover embedded in clear resin layers with chalk soil, evoking the terroir of the Champagne region. These plant species were selected in consultation with Perrier-Jouët's biodiversity experts, as they serve as indicators of ecological health in the area's vineyards. Surrounding the sculpture, a ring of screens displays animated graphics based on ultrasonic emission data recorded at AGH University of Kraków during plant dehydration and rehydration experiments. These inaudible signals form the basis of a three-part soundscape, evolving from sharp pulses to softer rhythms, delivered through multidirectional speakers that encourage visitors to move in a slow spiral. The installation includes 3D-printed seating coated with dried plant material collected in Épernay, France, inviting prolonged observation of the shifting light, graphics, and sound. Marcin Rusak describes the project as part of his ongoing research into botanical materials and natural cycles, exploring their relevance to contemporary design.
