Late-night hosts handily tackled Thursday's biggest news story — the redacted Mueller report released by The Justice Department, the result of a two-year investigation and the subject of endless speculation in the late-night world.
Transcript
00:00I have reason to believe that these responses were not actually written by Donald Trump
00:05because, uh, they're written.
00:12The week's biggest story was undoubtedly the redacted Mueller report, which was released
00:16by the Justice Department after a two-year investigation into possible Russian
00:20interference in the 2016 election. On Thursday's episodes of their respective
00:24late-night shows, the host tackled the topic with jokes in their opening monologues
00:27and discussions with special guests that broke down the details of the report.
00:31While much of the sensitive information that was included in the report was redacted,
00:35we were treated to the revelation that Trump's face went from orange as a glass of sun-kiss
00:38to white as a ghost when he learned that Mueller would be heading up the investigation.
00:42Apparently, Donnie feared that the probe would herald the end of his presidency and that
00:46he was f***ed. On the bright side, at least he was being f***ed by something because we all
00:50know Melania hasn't touched him since she conceived Barron. The report also argued that
00:54the president on multiple occasions tried to convince people to influence or stop the
00:57investigation. Referring to the report's conclusion that the Trump team acknowledged
01:01that they would benefit from possible Russian interference but didn't actively
01:04collude with the foreign power, the late show host Stephen Colbert joked,
01:08"...they were like the little dog on the kitchen floor waiting for the big dog to knock
01:12the steak of democracy off the counter."
01:14Colbert then took aim at Attorney General William Barr for stating in a press conference
01:18that Mueller did not make his decision on obstruction based on at least in part on the Justice
01:22Department's Office of Legal Counsel ruling not to indict a sitting president, despite the
01:26fact that the report mentions the OLC ruling as a factor in the conclusion.
01:30"...so Barr stood up there and knowingly said a bald-faced lie. The president must be so proud."
01:38On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Mayor Pete Buttigieg shared his reaction to the Mueller report,
01:42saying,
01:42"...I mean, I guess it confirmed a lot of things that we were worried about, that we have a
01:46president who acts in a self-serving way, that there was a lot of behavior that was at best
01:50unethical and legally unethical, to put it charitably, and the way that the Attorney General
01:54conducted himself as though he were the personal attorney to the president was incredibly troubling
01:58too." At the same time, he continued,
02:00"...I think politically I'm not sure it will change much."
02:03And it's one more reminder that if we really want to send Trumpism into the history books,
02:09the best thing we can do is defeat it decisively at the ballot box in 2020.
02:14Over on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host joked about the length of the Mueller report.
02:17"...as you probably know, the Mueller report is out. It's 448 pages long."
02:23"...say what you will about this president, he does have Americans reading again."
02:26Bringing up the revelation that Trump apparently stated that the Mueller report was the end
02:31of his presidency, which of course, sadly, it was not, Kimmel said,
02:34"...but he also said, he said, this is the worst thing that ever happened to me,
02:38and I assume that includes Donald Jr. being born."
02:41Meanwhile, on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon sang a Mueller report-inspired rendition of the
02:45Rolling Stones song, I Can't Get No Satisfaction.
