00:00Why were you talking like that?
00:01I don't know, it seemed right.
00:02Arkansas, it's weird.
00:25Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage.
00:27I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:29Hello.
00:29How are you doing?
00:30I'm good.
00:30Hi, Alex Taylor, how are you?
00:31Hi, great.
00:32So, we finally get redemption.
00:34Oh, oh, oh.
00:34Yeah.
00:35How many cups of coffee have you had today?
00:36Enough.
00:37Help me.
00:38So, we finally have our D100 back in the shop,
00:42and we're going to get redemption on it,
00:44because if you remember the last time we had it out at autocross,
00:46it did not go so well.
00:48We need redemption for sure.
00:51So, we did some upgrades.
00:52The last time it was in here, we did a front suspension upgrade.
00:56Yes.
00:57In the rear.
00:58Steering.
00:58Steering, transmission.
01:00Transmission.
01:01All of that.
01:02Some floors, some pedals, some clothes.
01:04There was a lot of stuff going on there.
01:05The problem is there was a lot of stuff that we didn't address.
01:08When we lowered the truck in the back by about six or seven inches,
01:13everything seemed okay, but the pinion angle was a little off.
01:17Now, that's not what ended up killing us at the autocross,
01:20but maybe the fact that the leaf springs have not had an upgrade since the truck was probably built
01:25was a big factor of that.
01:27So, when Lucky went into about turn three, we have on camera where the pinion is doing like this, up, down, up, down.
01:36So, with all of that movement back and forth, it caused our driveshaft to get in a bind,
01:41and actually one of the straps or girdles or whatever you want to call it broke off,
01:44and then the driveshaft came out.
01:47Driveshaft left the chat.
01:48So, we have the D100 back, and we're going for redemption
01:52and actually getting to make a full autocross pass with this.
01:55Just one lap.
01:56I'm just asking for one lap.
01:57One lap.
01:58So, it's back here, and instead of just doing upgrades to address those problems that we have,
02:02we thought we might as well do some more upgrades.
02:05So, what do you do when you think I add all the sketch?
02:07You add more sketch.
02:08You have learned well, Grasshopper.
02:10So, we're going to be doing an engine swap.
02:13We have a Gen 3 Hemi that we're going to be swapping into here,
02:16so we have a little bit more power.
02:18Nice.
02:18We are going to pair that with our American powertrain five-speed that's behind us,
02:22but we're also going to address our touchy clutch along the way.
02:25We're going to adjust that.
02:26Clutch works great, but the pedal assembly, it's the factory pedal assembly
02:29getting integrated to the American powertrain.
02:32There's some hiccups there.
02:32We can talk about that when we get it apart.
02:34And in the back, we're going to be doing a full swap back there.
02:36We're going to do a new rear-end housing and third member with new axles,
02:40from Quick Performance.
02:41And then we are also going to be doing a leaf spring refresh.
02:45I hope something's getting refreshed back there in leaf springs,
02:48because they are sad.
02:49And then eventually we'll do the drive shaft,
02:50because obviously we need that.
02:52And if you remember, we are also missing the bed of our truck bed.
02:56Well, the sides are there.
02:57Yeah.
02:58But it's like a port-a-potty in the middle.
03:00Correct.
03:00Right.
03:00That's a great analogy.
03:01Okay.
03:02So, if we have time, we're going to take the truck bed off.
03:05Lucky has a date with the saws all back there.
03:07And then we're going to eventually put it back on,
03:09new bolts, all of that, and then replace the wood back there.
03:11So, we're going to have this where it's not only a really nice driver,
03:15but also where it's going to be a pretty good performer.
03:18We're going back autocrossing with this same place
03:20to try to actually get a pass of our own that we have a time on,
03:24and we can feel like a mission accomplished.
03:26So, lots to do.
03:28I say we get to work, but this time, let's reverse the order.
03:31Flip the script.
03:32Flip the script.
03:33Instead of starting with an engine swap,
03:34let's go right to the culprit of why the truck is back in the shop.
03:38And that's the rear end.
03:39So, let's start back there, get our new rear end installed,
03:42and then work forward.
03:43Okay.
03:44Start back there.
03:45Flip the script.
03:46Work our way forward.
03:46Yep.
03:47Script flipping.
03:57That's good.
03:58Bring her in.
04:03Keep going.
04:06Stop.
04:07Okay, tilt back a little.
04:10More.
04:11More.
04:13Now, come forward.
04:16A little more.
04:18Slowly.
04:19Slowly.
04:22I think that's it.
04:25Okay.
04:27Take her up.
04:27Going up.
04:29Oh.
04:29It doesn't look structurally sound.
04:33Everything's flexing.
04:35Oh, look.
04:36Is that...
04:37Oh, our muffler guy,
04:39who just put the exhaust on before we hit the track,
04:42attached the muffler hangers to the bed cross member.
04:45So, uh...
04:47I know what you're getting.
04:48I'll be right back.
04:48Yeah.
04:54Take her up.
04:55Yeah.
04:55Yeah.
04:59So, last time when we were working back here,
05:08we did a flip kit,
05:09meaning that we took the rear end
05:10and put it on top of the springs
05:12rather than under the springs.
05:13So, that raised the rear end up in the truck,
05:16which would affect pinion angle once you sit it down.
05:18Now, I fully believe that that's not what broke our strap here.
05:24That's not what caused the bind.
05:25It doesn't help,
05:27but where we saw our issue
05:29was when it was doing like this
05:30and like this and like this,
05:31even if it was right,
05:32we were going to have that happen.
05:34Instead of just fixing that,
05:37we are going to go ahead and fully upgrade
05:39and go with a brand new rear end back here
05:41with a third member
05:42that's ready to do
05:43what we're going to put it through at autocross.
05:45So, we're going to start back here
05:46by taking all of the stuff that you see,
05:49rear end, shocks, springs,
05:51take it out
05:52and then get ready
05:53to put new rear end shocks, springs, back in.
06:18Run for your life.
06:19Watch your cranium.
06:20I am still going to get a headache.
06:22Watch out.
06:22Stop.
06:23You're going to crash.
06:24Okay, I got it.
06:24You go.
06:28Okay.
06:28Ready?
06:29Yep.
06:29Going in.
06:31There's a little square forward or back?
06:34Forward.
06:34Okay.
06:36This is our pinion issues before.
06:37Wrong.
06:38And when you accelerated,
06:39it went,
06:40and then when you got off the brakes,
06:44but I think you should illustrate it more correctly.
06:47When you de-celled,
06:49it went like this.
06:50Way down.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:52So, the goal here right now
06:54is to get our pinion angle set
06:56using our,
06:57one of our favorite tools here,
06:58our digital angle finder,
07:00digital level.
07:01We're going to put it here.
07:02We're going to do some math,
07:04figure it out,
07:05get a visual.
07:06Ideally, I believe,
07:08this is from the Book of Burger,
07:11Book of Fry Burger.
07:12With a leaf spring,
07:14you want potentially five degrees down at rest
07:18so that when you accelerate,
07:20it comes up to one or two degrees.
07:22But then you look it up on the internet.
07:23Oh, don't go down that rabbit hole.
07:25I mean, you end up anywhere from two to seven.
07:26So, I was like, you know what?
07:27I text my dad.
07:28He's like, if you do somewhere
07:29at negative two to negative three,
07:30it's going to be better
07:31for just daily driving around.
07:32Right.
07:33Negative three is the number.
07:34Okay.
07:35Sold.
07:35Wait.
07:36This is a perfect opportunity to say it.
07:37Go ahead.
07:39It's just like your opinion, man.
07:40We're done.
07:46So, we could take some angle out of it.
07:49Nice.
07:51Okay.
07:52What is it?
07:53390.
07:563-270.
07:58290.
07:58Give it a little more.
08:00Okay.
08:01So, 3.0.
08:03Yep.
08:03Now that we have pinion angle set
08:05and we have,
08:07Lucky got this centered side to side.
08:09That way it's centered in the truck.
08:12We're going to get to tack it up.
08:14So, we're going to tack these purges
08:16to these tubes,
08:17then weld it in place,
08:18and then we're sending this off
08:19to be powder coated.
08:21It'll come back nice and shiny.
08:23Pink.
08:23Bright pink with flames.
08:24We're not supposed to tell them that.
08:26It's a surprise.
08:26It can step up as we go.
08:27Surprise.
08:28But after this,
08:30once we're done welding,
08:31I think we can move to the front
08:32and start...
08:33That's going to be so much fun.
08:34...looking at pulling an engine.
08:35What do you think of taupe?
08:36So, this 1966 D100...
08:50Yes.
08:50...shapen up.
08:52Actually, it's losing shape
08:53as we speak.
08:54It is.
08:55So, if you guys know Lucky,
08:57you know Lucky loves to take
08:58anything that comes off of a vehicle
09:00off the vehicle.
09:01Oh, yeah.
09:01That's right.
09:02Like everybody,
09:03that's how I was raised.
09:04Take it apart,
09:04figure out how to put it back together later.
09:06But the only way I like it
09:08is that we're doing it
09:09with intention, you know?
09:10Right.
09:11That means I just have to
09:12make up something smooth
09:13to say about taking
09:15the front clip off the car
09:16other than I'm lazy
09:17and don't want to bend over
09:18the fender for a week.
09:19Actually, we made a compromise.
09:20So, we are going to be pulling
09:22this 318 poly out of here
09:25so that way we can put
09:25our new Gen 3 Hemi in.
09:27And so Lucky was saying,
09:28hey, if we take the front clip off
09:29then we don't have to bend over
09:30and work on it
09:31and we have to fabricate motor mounts
09:32and all of that.
09:34And then I was like,
09:34that's a lot of work
09:35for the days that we don't have.
09:37But then I was like,
09:37I have an idea.
09:38Here's, I'll make you a deal.
09:40Let's do that if,
09:41while this is off,
09:42we can power wash it,
09:43paint the engine bay,
09:44clean the firewall up,
09:45and paint.
09:46So then you win,
09:47I win,
09:47it wins,
09:48we all win.
09:50I'm a winner.
09:51Winner.
09:52I am a winner.
09:53I am a winner.
09:54Going in.
09:57Hook me up, Alex Taylor.
10:00Okay, up, up, and away.
10:02There's just not enough screaming
10:17in an engine pull.
10:19All right.
10:21Everything about this
10:22was totally uneventful.
10:23Oh, big old mess.
10:30Oh, gear oil.
10:31Yeah, trans fluid.
10:32Oh, yeah.
10:33Uh-huh.
10:34Wow.
10:35Technically, transmission
10:36needed oil change anyway.
10:39We did put seven miles on it.
10:40Coming forward.
10:48You want to put it
10:49right in the middle of it there?
10:51Alex, you want to lift,
10:52let it down or lift it
10:53one or the other?
10:53I can lift it.
10:59Okay, so this motor
11:00originally came from
11:01Engine Masters.
11:02It's a high-mileage truck motor,
11:045.7 liter,
11:05dynoed in at 498 horsepower
11:08at the crink shop.
11:09That's pretty amazing
11:10for a truck motor.
11:11So why did we take out
11:13that 318 poly
11:13and decide to put in
11:14498 horsepower?
11:16Well, because it was
11:17a 318 poly.
11:18Are you kidding me?
11:19This is Hot Rod Garage.
11:21So I got leaf springs
11:22painted while our housing
11:23was sent off to powder coating.
11:24They powder coated it
11:25in three hours.
11:26That's a really good turnaround.
11:28It's nice, glossy black.
11:30This, I just sprayed it
11:31with a spray can,
11:32but it's not going to rust.
11:33So I'm putting these back in.
11:34We've got fresh, new hardware.
11:36Get that all in,
11:37tighten it up,
11:38and then it's time
11:38to put the housing in
11:39for the final time.
11:40Put new U-bolt, all that.
11:42And then we can actually
11:42put the third member in
11:43and move on to something else.
11:46So I trail fitted
11:47the third member.
11:49It fits.
11:49It's good.
11:50So I'm doing
11:50the final fit right now.
11:51I've got sealer on it,
11:52ready to slide this in.
11:54We ended up going
11:54with a 370 year.
11:56If you remember,
11:57the whole rear situation
11:58was our problem
12:00when we took it
12:01autocrossing last time.
12:02We didn't break
12:03the rear end yet
12:04on the last one,
12:05but with all the
12:06pinion angle movement,
12:08the leaf spring movement,
12:09all of that,
12:10it put our drive shaft
12:11in a bind
12:12and kicked it right
12:13out the side of the truck.
12:14So we could have just
12:15potentially upgraded
12:15the leaf springs.
12:17However, since we're
12:17already back here,
12:18we might as well
12:19put a nice 9-inch
12:21from Quick Performance
12:21in with a different
12:23third member.
12:24So, now we go in.
12:27So we reached out
12:28the hooker
12:28and we got a swap kit
12:29set of mounts
12:30specifically for this motor,
12:32which is great,
12:33but it's designed
12:34to go into a truck
12:35that is 1972
12:36through 1993.
12:38This is a generation
12:40prior.
12:40This is a 66.
12:42I think it's pretty close.
12:44What could go wrong here,
12:45right?
12:46So, flywheel's installed.
12:49Pilot bushing is installed.
12:50Bell housing is put on.
12:51Check the adjustment
12:52of the hydraulic
12:53throttle bearing.
12:53Everything is measured out.
12:55It's ready to go.
12:57Moving in.
12:58American powertrain
13:00going directly over
13:01to 498 ground-pounding horsepower.
13:06It's a little bit of a
13:07put-an-egg-shell-back-together deal.
13:11And I'm going to just
13:14work it in there
13:15very delicately.
13:22Did you see that?
13:23Oh, f-f-funny meeting you here.
13:27Hi, Alex Taylor.
13:28Hello.
13:28How's it going back there?
13:29Oh, pretty good, you know.
13:30How are you doing up here?
13:31I'm doing well up here.
13:32As you can see,
13:33I started out with a bunch
13:35of pieces,
13:35and now I have one.
13:36So the question remains,
13:38will it fit,
13:39or will it take some cutting?
13:40It's all suspect.
13:42Suspect.
13:43All right, this is our D100 truck
13:48that we took out to autocross
13:50just a couple weeks ago,
13:51and we didn't even get
13:53to make a full pass
13:53because we had some pinion angle,
13:55leaf spring issues,
13:56and we kicked the drive shaft out.
13:57So we did it as anyone would.
13:59We brought it back to the shop
14:00so we could fix the drive shaft.
14:02But then in addition to that,
14:04we upgraded the leaf springs.
14:05We upgraded the rear end
14:06to a nine-inch.
14:07We have done all kinds
14:08of cleanup and good work.
14:10And then, of course,
14:11as one does,
14:12you engine swap it.
14:13So we have removed
14:14our 318 poly
14:15that was right here,
14:16and we have a Gen 3 Hemi
14:18right there.
14:19Hey, Lucky,
14:20just land the plane right here.
14:22Yep, uh-huh, straight.
14:24Okay, yep,
14:25bring it on in.
14:26Uh-huh.
14:28I don't know
14:29if this is going to fit.
14:30Drop it.
14:31No.
14:31Have you checked this out
14:35and make sure it's going to work?
14:35This is the absolute
14:36guaranteed first time
14:38it's going down.
14:41Wow, something caught.
14:42I'm going to go down.
14:43It's going to get really close
14:44to the crossmember
14:45on the oil pan.
14:45Okay, in,
14:46because it's sitting
14:47on the crossmember.
14:49You might have to raise up
14:50and I'll go.
14:51Okay, maybe floor jack
14:52under the, uh...
14:53Yeah, it's going to have to.
14:53I don't have that.
14:54Man.
14:56So it's a total roll
14:56of the dice.
14:57The motor mounts say
14:58they fit a later model truck.
14:59Um, it's looking like
15:01there's not a big difference
15:03between a later model
15:03and an early one like this.
15:06It could...
15:07This could work.
15:10It worked.
15:11It went behind.
15:13These motor mounts
15:15under no circumstances
15:17will ever work
15:18for this application.
15:20One of the biggest
15:21interference issues
15:22is the oil pan
15:23on the crossmember.
15:24This is a high-clearance oil pan.
15:26We're not going to get
15:26much more space than that,
15:28so we're going to have
15:28to figure out a way
15:29to mount the motor in here
15:30in a position
15:31that allows the oil pan
15:32to not interfere
15:32with the crossmember.
15:33I would ideally
15:34like to lower
15:35the front of the motor
15:36so that I don't have
15:37to make anything
15:38too crazy
15:39to put the motor mounts
15:40in between
15:40the frame
15:42and the aftermarket
15:43motor mount
15:43or the swap motor mount.
15:45In addition to all that,
15:46this tube,
15:48it's got to go.
15:49Steering shaft
15:50needs to go through here,
15:51from here,
15:52directly through the header
15:53to a universal
15:55on the rack.
15:56If I cut this header
15:57and rotate it over
15:59like that,
16:00that will give me
16:01a nice opening
16:02to allow that steering shaft
16:03to go right to the rack
16:04and still be able
16:05to put the starter motor
16:06in and out.
16:07That's called thinking ahead.
16:09I've made all that up,
16:10but it's going to work.
16:11Trust me.
16:12It's not a garage.
16:12What could go wrong?
16:15Starting on brakes
16:16in the back,
16:17so we are upgrading
16:18to our Willwood disc brakes.
16:19Something that's actually
16:20pretty cool about this set
16:21that we're actually going with
16:22is this kind of looks
16:24like a drum brake here,
16:25right?
16:25Well, it's a similar function,
16:26but this is actually
16:27your emergency
16:28and parking brake.
16:29Since we have
16:30a manual transmission,
16:32this is a really nice benefit
16:34because that way
16:35you don't have to
16:35leave it in gear
16:36or you don't have to
16:38get out of your truck
16:39with it still running
16:40and having it in neutral
16:41and worry about it rolling away.
16:42You guys know
16:42what a parking brake,
16:43emergency brake is for,
16:44but a lot of times
16:46when you upgrade
16:46to disc brakes,
16:47this isn't something
16:48that just comes
16:49with your standard kit.
16:50Now, this is a little bit
16:51more expensive kit
16:52but I feel like it's worth it.
16:54So I've actually never
16:54installed one of these before,
16:56but the way this works,
16:58this looks like
16:58a little miniature drum brake
16:59and it goes right here.
17:02This goes on the inside
17:04of your rotor
17:05for your disc brake.
17:06So you just adjust this out
17:07just like you would
17:08a regular drum brake
17:11and then you have
17:11your brake cables
17:12that run to your
17:13standard OEM lever
17:15or if you didn't have that
17:17before, you can install that.
17:18So it's just kind of
17:19a nice little upgrade,
17:20a little benefit
17:21to this Willwood kit.
17:24So before,
17:25we just had stock stuff
17:26back here,
17:27stock rear end.
17:28We had stock brakes
17:29which were drum brakes,
17:32not disc brakes.
17:33So this is a totally
17:34different setup
17:35than what we had.
17:35So I went in the back
17:54and I found some metal.
17:55It's an approximately
17:56quarter inch plate.
17:58Good metal,
17:58going to make some
17:59adapter plates.
18:00So what we're trying to do
18:01is use the hooker swap
18:03motor mount plates
18:05on the motor
18:05and use the stock
18:07motor mount brackets
18:08that are already
18:08attached to the frame.
18:10And with all the measurements
18:11done,
18:12this is the adapter plate
18:14that we whipped up.
18:15Quarter inch plate
18:16we had in the back.
18:16Got to use the plasma cutter,
18:18one of my favorite tools.
18:19My eyes are still burning.
18:21And now I'm going to see
18:23if it goes in.
18:36Okay, so motor mounts
18:37are installed.
18:38Believe it or not,
18:39the motor is actually installed
18:40for the very last time
18:40Transcross member
18:41is installed,
18:42bolted up,
18:43motor plates have been
18:44modified and installed.
18:45There's plenty of clearance
18:46for everything.
18:47It looks great.
18:48Speaking of looking great,
18:49does this look normal to you?
18:50It looks a little off to me.
18:52We still got some wiring to do.
18:54I believe the pedals
18:54on the inside
18:55are supposed to be
18:56hooked to something.
18:57And something in the back
18:58is supposed to hold gas.
18:59We still got quite a bit
19:00of work to do.
19:01Once again,
19:02does this look normal to you?
19:04I don't think it is.
19:14Okay, so one of the issues
19:15we had in the past
19:17with this truck
19:18was we used
19:19the stock clutch
19:20master cylinder
19:21with a factory
19:21hydraulic clutch system.
19:23Assuming it would work
19:24the hydraulic
19:25throwout variant.
19:26Note,
19:27it does not.
19:28It moves just
19:29way too much material.
19:30It was blowing
19:30the O-ring out.
19:31The thing was leaking.
19:32So we've gone ahead
19:33and gotten
19:33a hydraulic
19:34master cylinder
19:36specifically designed
19:37for a hydraulic
19:38throwout variant.
19:39We have to make
19:39a little plate.
19:40We need to punch
19:41a hole in the middle
19:41in a couple of small spots
19:43and make it
19:43so it bolts right
19:44to the firewall.
19:44It will look clean
19:45and factory
19:46hot rod garage.
19:49Okay,
19:49plate is whipped up,
19:50drilled another hole.
19:51I mounted the hydraulic
19:52Wilwood master cylinder
19:53right there.
19:54This is a three-quarter inch
19:56small volume,
19:57just a mount.
19:58I mean,
19:58it's not like
19:58a giant brake
19:59master cylinder.
20:01It's just there
20:02to do one job
20:03and that's move
20:03a throwout bearing
20:04like 500,000ths.
20:07And I enlarge
20:09the holes
20:09on the firewall
20:10just a little bit.
20:11We're done.
20:21Okay,
20:22it's time to put
20:22our gas pedal
20:24in our D100 truck.
20:25So this already
20:26had a gas pedal,
20:27but what we're doing
20:28with our Terminator
20:29X-Maxx from Holley
20:30is we're going to be using
20:31the drive-by wire feature.
20:33So with drive-by wire,
20:34you are actually
20:35using electronics
20:36to say,
20:38hey, gas pedal,
20:39I'm pushing you
20:40throttle body.
20:41I want you to open.
20:43This is not physically
20:44pulling a cable
20:45and opening
20:46the throttle body,
20:47but instead
20:48it's seeing voltage
20:49in the potentiometer
20:50that's in here
20:51and the electronics
20:51that's inside
20:52this gas pedal.
20:53It's sending information
20:54over to the ECU.
20:55The ECU is sending
20:56information to the
20:57throttle body
20:58and they're all
20:59communicating together.
21:00Some of the advantages
21:01are you're going to have
21:02a little bit more
21:02throttle control.
21:03Your computer has
21:04a little bit more
21:05information.
21:05There's just some
21:06different settings
21:06you can use.
21:07So we have a pedal
21:08that Holley supplied
21:08for this application
21:10which matches
21:10our throttle body
21:11which is a stock
21:13Chrysler throttle body.
21:15What I'm doing right now
21:16is where our stock
21:19pedal came through.
21:20It had a large hole
21:22in the firewall.
21:23Where this pedal
21:24needs to mount
21:24is basically right
21:27at that hole
21:27almost perfectly.
21:29So I just made
21:30a nice little circular
21:31patch panel
21:32getting ready
21:33to weld it in place
21:34and then I can
21:35actually go ahead
21:36and move forward
21:37with mounting this
21:38and then we run
21:38some wires
21:39and be good to go.
21:42So I'm taking a break
21:43from a little
21:44cutting and a grinding
21:45and a grinding
21:45and a cutting
21:46to harnessing the power.
21:48Putting the Holley
21:49Fuel injection harness
21:50in right now
21:51we have an injection
21:51harness and a coil
21:53harness.
21:54I think there's
21:54an additional sensor
21:55harness.
21:56It's a HEMI.
21:57It's new to me.
21:58I wonder if it's
21:59new to you.
22:00But I do know
22:01that it is going in
22:02and I have the
22:03right harness here now.
22:06So last night
22:07I got the radiator
22:08mounted
22:08or I should say
22:10mounted.
22:10It's in there.
22:11It's hanging
22:12but we're waiting
22:13to get the front clip
22:13up on the truck.
22:15That way we can
22:15actually make sure
22:15the radiator
22:16is in the correct
22:17position
22:17and make adjustments
22:18to raise it
22:19or lower it
22:20depending on
22:21where everything falls.
22:22So once we get
22:23the front capped
22:23back off
22:24you guys remember
22:25that really rusty
22:27crusty truck bed.
22:29I'm really excited
22:30for that.
22:31We have a whole
22:32new bed wood kit
22:32that we're going
22:33to be installing.
22:34I've got to stain it.
22:35It's my wood crafting
22:36project that I'm
22:37really excited about.
22:39So we've got to
22:39cap the front,
22:40cap the back
22:41and see if all
22:42of the stuff
22:43that we've put
22:43under the hood
22:44fits in between
22:45these two fenders.
22:48We'll see.
22:51Hey so the coolest
22:52part about taking
22:53all the body panels
22:53off it makes it
22:54so easy to work on
22:55and my back
22:55still doesn't hurt.
22:56Oh I'm glad.
22:57That's great.
22:58Oh they're back.
22:58Oh hey.
23:01So if you missed it
23:03this is our D100
23:04that we are trying
23:05to get to autocross
23:07for the redemption
23:08that it deserves
23:09because the last
23:10time we were out
23:11it didn't even
23:11get a full autocross
23:12lap.
23:13Turn three
23:13we made it
23:14to turn three
23:14this time
23:15all the way
23:16to turn four.
23:17So our plan
23:18is not only
23:19are we going
23:19to go back
23:20to autocross
23:21and get like
23:21basic redemption
23:22we're just
23:23going to annihilate
23:25every bit
23:26of sadness
23:27that it had.
23:28Yes.
23:29You calling the tire
23:30sadness because
23:31we're going to
23:31annihilate them.
23:32Yeah that too.
23:33So we did a lot
23:35of disassembly
23:35which means we
23:36have a lot
23:37of reassembly
23:38so we need
23:39to get our front
23:39clip up here
23:41because a lot
23:41of the stuff
23:42that we're kind
23:42of still waiting
23:43to finish
23:43we need to see
23:44how that's going
23:45to be positioned
23:46so we can wrap
23:47those projects up.
23:47Oh that's right
23:48we put a whole
23:48new motor
23:49the Hemi here
23:49and a new radiator
23:51have you
23:52did we measure
23:52this?
23:53No.
23:54Because they say
23:54measure once
23:55cuss twice
23:56We could be
23:57cussing in just
23:58a second
23:58or we could be
23:59celebrating.
24:01Ready?
24:01Bring it in!
24:05Take her up.
24:07Up.
24:07Stop.
24:08Up.
24:08Up.
24:09Up.
24:09Up.
24:11Up with it.
24:12You got it.
24:13Keep going.
24:14More.
24:14Keep going.
24:15More height.
24:17Keep going.
24:19What do you
24:20think this does?
24:21Don't.
24:21Oh.
24:22It'll be okay.
24:23Don't need that.
24:24I think that'll
24:25be good right there.
24:27I think that's
24:28probably about good.
24:29Bring her in.
24:32Fender's out.
24:35Okay.
24:36Slow her down.
24:37More now.
24:37Hang on.
24:38We got a few
24:38of wine in the way.
24:40Who put that there?
24:42Okay.
24:42So now the deal
24:43we have to pull
24:44this out
24:44because it kind
24:45of closes the gap.
24:46So pull the whole
24:47thing towards you
24:47and slowly go down
24:51with that little
24:51lever right there.
25:00Okay.
25:01I'm under the edge.
25:02I am not.
25:04Keep going down
25:05a little bit.
25:08Stop.
25:09Pull your fingers
25:09out of there.
25:10Okay.
25:11All right.
25:14What?
25:14Whoa.
25:16That was weird.
25:17What?
25:18Huh.
25:19It?
25:20Wow.
25:21Actually looks
25:21like it belongs there.
25:23Am I lying?
25:23Who did the
25:24arithmetic here?
25:25It was an accident.
25:26I mean, we did it.
25:27Okay.
25:28I'm cool with it.
25:30So something
25:31that I really wanted
25:32to do,
25:32just actual project
25:34I'm excited about
25:35is I want to do
25:36the bed wood
25:36in our truck bed.
25:38So we got
25:40a bed wood kit here.
25:41It's already pre-cut,
25:43pre-slotted.
25:44I stayed late last night
25:45to prep it
25:46just because
25:47we just don't have
25:47a ton of time.
25:48So I got two coats
25:50of oil stain
25:50on the backside.
25:52I also got the bed
25:53right back here.
25:54I cut all of the slats,
25:55all of the old
25:56rusted hardware
25:57that didn't want to budge.
25:59Cut all that out
25:59last night.
26:01So for the most part,
26:02it's prepped.
26:02So I'm going to get
26:03this last coat on
26:04and then
26:05we just let it dry
26:07and then we work later.
26:13So moving back,
26:14I'm going to start
26:15pulling parts
26:16off the side of the frame.
26:16We don't need
26:17all these extra hangers.
26:18I think there used
26:19to be a trailer hitch
26:19or something
26:20on the back of this thing.
26:21We don't need that anymore.
26:22There are some muffler hangers
26:23and old e-brake apparatus
26:24up in the front.
26:25All that could potentially
26:26cause a problem
26:27in the future
26:27as we're throwing
26:28more parts at this thing.
26:30Speaking of throwing parts,
26:31there is no gas tank
26:33back here.
26:34Factory gas tank
26:35was located behind the seat.
26:36I don't really care for that.
26:38You get to smell it,
26:39potentially get to wear it
26:41if you're in an accident.
26:42We've already pulled
26:43that tank out.
26:44In addition to that,
26:45we grabbed an aluminum tank
26:46from Classic Performance
26:47and it's a tank
26:48that fits 63 through 73 C10s.
26:51It's a little bit narrow,
26:52but it's good for
26:53front to back clearance
26:54and height clearance.
26:56And I think this thing's
26:56going to be super low,
26:57so height matters.
27:00Awesome.
27:02Okay, so it looks like
27:04we're very close
27:05to being done.
27:05The D100 has a Hemi in it.
27:08Yes.
27:08American Powertrain 5-speed.
27:10Correct.
27:10Not just a new third member
27:12from Quick Performance,
27:13but a complete new differential,
27:15including disc brakes
27:16in the back.
27:16And we got all
27:17the new leaf springs,
27:18which if you remember,
27:18that was the culprit
27:19of our problems.
27:21We only have a few things
27:22left to do,
27:23a little bit of plumbing
27:23for the back.
27:24A couple wires to connect,
27:26a couple hoses,
27:27and of course,
27:28obviously,
27:28we got to put the bed wood
27:30in the bed,
27:30but we're waiting
27:31on this to dry.
27:33And I would say
27:34it's going to be
27:35a real autocross machine now.
27:37Absolutely.
27:37We went from farm fresh
27:38to hot mess.
27:40Express,
27:41because we're going
27:41to be fast.
27:42Hot mess express.
27:43Hot mess express.
27:43I like.
27:44Lucky like.
27:45Lucky like.
27:46Alex liked to finish this.
27:48Oh, really?
27:48Yeah, let's go.
27:49All right.
27:49Yeah, okay.
27:50All right.
28:01So we are back
28:02for redemption,
28:03and we have come
28:04with a vengeance.
28:05We're back
28:06at the exact same track
28:07that we were at.
28:07The whole race course
28:08has all been laid out.
28:10Last time we were here,
28:11we had a stellar three turns
28:14before the truck failed.
28:15Yeah, so if you don't remember,
28:16our Dodge D100,
28:18we had it out not that long ago
28:20at a really great autocross event.
28:22Lucky went into turn three
28:24after a little bit
28:25of concern
28:26that he might not even
28:26make it off the line
28:27because our clutch
28:28was not acting right.
28:29There was a lot
28:29of iffy stuff going on.
28:30But he made it off the line,
28:31went into turn three,
28:33and then spit the drive shaft
28:34right off the side
28:35of the truck,
28:35and then he, Lucky,
28:36coasted right into the pit.
28:38We didn't even get
28:38a time on it.
28:39I see what you did there.
28:40I know.
28:41I will say,
28:41in my defense,
28:42those first two turns
28:42were stellar.
28:44I can say.
28:45They were really good.
28:46But since this fought us
28:48and gave us trouble,
28:49we thought that we wouldn't
28:49just fix what broke.
28:51We would upgrade
28:51and then fix anything else
28:53that might be
28:53a potential issue.
28:54Anything that insinuated
28:56it was going to give us trouble
28:57the next time we got
28:57to the track,
28:58we put it to bed.
29:00We started out in the back.
29:02We upgraded the rear end
29:03to a quick performance,
29:04nine inch.
29:05We did new leaf springs
29:06because that was also
29:06a major culprit of issue.
29:08Yeah.
29:08Full exhaust all the way
29:10to the back
29:10because we had to figure out
29:12some way to get the horsepower
29:15from the, say it.
29:17Hemi.
29:17Hemi-powered V8
29:19up in the front,
29:20complete fuel injected,
29:21Holley engine management,
29:23and that all feeds
29:24the American powertrain
29:25transmission.
29:25It was there last time
29:26we were here.
29:26It worked just fine.
29:27So we have something
29:28that I would say
29:29is a qualified race vehicle.
29:31And obviously today
29:32we're going to be flying
29:33right through that course
29:34and right through the cone,
29:35so we should probably
29:36go do a course walk.
29:37We're going to take
29:38the California coastal carver
29:39out on the track later
29:41after we walk it.
29:41I like that name.
29:42You like that?
29:43I do.
29:43Let's go.
29:44It's actually a sandwich
29:44I had the other day.
29:45That is not.
29:45Delicious.
29:46It doesn't sound good.
29:50Okay, so this thing
29:51is sounding great.
29:52Way better.
29:52It feels driving nice.
29:54I will say this thing,
29:55as soon as we first tuned it,
29:56the throttle was sort of
29:58like jumpy.
29:58And I realized
29:59because the seat's
30:00sort of sketchy
30:01that it was like me
30:02bouncing on the gas pedal
30:03and I accelerated.
30:04You were the problem.
30:06Yeah.
30:06So I do recall
30:07the start line
30:08was right around here
30:09and we're just going
30:11to drive it right now,
30:12look for debris on the track.
30:13I just don't feel
30:14like walking.
30:15Okay.
30:15We could have walked.
30:16We're slow driving, right?
30:17Yeah, we're just
30:18slow driving it.
30:19Hey, what happened?
30:23Apparently,
30:23this thing just wants to race.
30:25Apparently.
30:25Yeah, yeah.
30:26Okay, so, so far
30:27it's looking similar.
30:28Yeah.
30:29Yeah, and I do remember this
30:31because it looks weird
30:31the way the cones are all.
30:32Yeah.
30:33But you go past this,
30:34what looks like
30:35clearly an intersection.
30:36Yep.
30:37You turn to the right.
30:38Man, this seat is bouncy.
30:39Yeah, it's just,
30:40it's going to be fun
30:41to bounce around in it.
30:43Okay.
30:44Now, this is neat
30:45because you have a little,
30:46it goes that way.
30:47Yep.
30:47So you've got to kick
30:48the back end over this
30:49and it gets real light.
30:51Yep, okay.
30:51And she comes around.
30:53Very nice.
30:55And then,
30:56as I recall,
30:58aim for the pole.
30:59Take a loosey.
31:00Apex to the left.
31:04Very nice.
31:05And then you can start
31:05getting some speed right here.
31:07Yeah, we've got our
31:07straightaway back here.
31:08And you think you want
31:09to get close right there,
31:10but you don't.
31:11You want to go out here.
31:12Because you've got to swing back.
31:13Because then you've got
31:14a big, long sweeper.
31:16And it's a little bit
31:17of a slalom.
31:19This way.
31:20Yep.
31:21And then this way.
31:22And you think you want
31:22to apex it out.
31:23You don't.
31:24You stay wide
31:24and you move the apex
31:26deeper into the turn.
31:29There we go.
31:30Very nice.
31:31And then you go wide here
31:33and then just dive
31:34to the outside here
31:35and apex in.
31:36And this is all the way
31:37back this way.
31:38This is, uh,
31:39this got me a couple times.
31:40It's confusing.
31:40Yeah.
31:41Okay, very nice.
31:42Cool.
31:43I feel pretty good about that.
31:44I think that's pretty good.
31:45Plus,
31:45we don't have to wait in line
31:46to make multiple passes.
31:48True.
31:48I also feel good
31:49that that's really close
31:50to how it was.
31:51Yeah, it does seem
31:52very familiar.
31:52Very close.
31:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:54All right,
31:54I think it's only fair
31:55that you go first
31:57and you get your redemption.
31:58I insist upon going first
32:00and getting,
32:01is that okay?
32:01That sounds great.
32:02I'm getting my redemption.
32:03Okay.
32:05Have fun.
32:13All right,
32:14so I saw Lucky drive it
32:15from over there
32:16to the starting line
32:16and I can say
32:17there's a chance
32:18that with his driving,
32:19I may not be driving
32:20again today.
32:21Uh, so anyways,
32:21he's getting ready
32:22to launch the truck.
32:23He didn't look too happy
32:24with his drive over,
32:25so we're going to see
32:26how it's going to do.
32:27But if we don't send him soon,
32:29he's going to get cranky.
32:30So with that said,
32:31Lucky, hit it.
32:34All right,
32:34so sitting on the line,
32:35something sounds
32:36very clacky, clanky.
32:37I don't know what it is,
32:38but it took off okay,
32:40so it'll be okay.
32:42It'll be fine.
32:49No, it's not fine.
32:51Is it fine?
32:53We're coming up
32:54to the scene
32:54of the accident
32:55real soon.
32:56Like right here.
32:59He is on turn three
33:00and he is not moving again.
33:02How is this even possible?
33:04Lucky coasted
33:05right into our pit again.
33:08All right,
33:08it looks like
33:09he made it to turn three
33:10once again
33:10and he's coasting in.
33:12Oh, I hear it.
33:13We may not be getting redemption.
33:15What did you do?
33:16So, in case you missed it,
33:21Lucky broke it.
33:22All right.
33:22I wasn't actually
33:23going to say it.
33:24Okay.
33:24We came for redemption
33:25and we're getting
33:26our booties kicked.
33:29Derrieres are in the air,
33:30for sure.
33:31That's a fact.
33:32Now, this isn't one of those
33:33where we're like,
33:34we just showed up,
33:34we haven't even driven this car.
33:36That's the thing.
33:37This one was actually
33:38tested, tuned,
33:39proven, dynoed,
33:40all of that.
33:41And then out here,
33:42it's just failing in real life.
33:43And then it would run great
33:45and then I'm waiting
33:46for cameras and everybody
33:46to get in place.
33:47It has to run for five
33:48or ten minutes waiting
33:49for people like directors
33:51and camera guys
33:52to get in place
33:52and then all of a sudden
33:53ready to go.
33:55Ten feet out of the gate.
33:57Let it cool down.
33:58Start again.
33:59Starts up.
34:00Okay, I think we fixed it.
34:01Anyway, so,
34:02there are some LED lights
34:04on a Terminator X Max
34:05which indicate
34:06different statuses
34:08of systems within the ECU.
34:10The one that kept showing up red
34:12was for a crank sensor.
34:14So, turning it off
34:15and back on again
34:16doesn't work
34:17but we pulled it back over here.
34:18We checked the sensor earlier.
34:20While there's no visible
34:20physical damage,
34:21that doesn't mean
34:22that internally
34:23there is not something failing.
34:25So, we had to go
34:25to a Chrysler dealership
34:27in Huntington Beach, California.
34:30Correct,
34:30because our local auto parts
34:31store didn't have it.
34:33Anyways,
34:35with all of that said.
34:35Yeah, get to the punchline.
34:36We have the sensor.
34:37We're going to try it.
34:38And you know what?
34:39It still may not work.
34:41Okay, we didn't make it worse.
34:44There is no issue
34:45on that light right now.
34:47All green.
34:48All green.
34:48Okay, based on the LEDs
34:51on the Terminator X Max,
34:53we have all green lights currently.
34:54So, I say we take them out,
34:56line them up,
34:57and we see
34:58if it's going to disappoint us
35:00once again
35:01or if it's actually going to work.
35:03You ready?
35:04I am.
35:05Okay.
35:06Don't break it.
35:07No promises.
35:08No.
35:09No.
35:26No.
35:27No.
35:28No.
35:29Oh, rude.
35:31Rude truck, not nice.
35:34As soon as you went out, car truck started acting up,
35:37comes back over, red light on the crank sensor's bad,
35:39so, or it's red, meaning that there's an error.
35:42So we're gonna have to do some diagnosing,
35:44and if not, promise there'll still be
35:47a really interesting event.
35:50Don't you worry.
35:52So apparently and clearly,
35:55whenever you have an automotive issue,
35:58a performance issue with the car, it's CSI.
36:01We are trained professionals.
36:03Trained professionals.
36:05At automotive CSI.
36:07So we were thrown off a little bit
36:09because on a Terminator X Max,
36:11which is not on all Holley ECU's,
36:14like your Dominator and your HP,
36:15but the Terminator X and X Max have indicator lights,
36:18which we keep talking about,
36:19which tells you which system is having issues.
36:22A very specific ECU, which is really user-friendly.
36:26It showed, it kept showing the crank sensor was having an issue,
36:29which we replaced.
36:31Right.
36:31Because it made sense, what we were seeing was cranked.
36:33But then all of a sudden, this last go around,
36:35we started seeing another Diag popping up,
36:38that it was Cam's sensor having issues.
36:40Right. So it's sensor issues.
36:42Sensor issues, but like...
36:44And technically, it was correct.
36:45Now, what did you find?
36:46The problem was a zip tie that was misplaced
36:49and a five-volt reference wire touching a pipe
36:52that only would get through the plastic insulation at 190 degrees.
36:57So it would get on there, connection would mess it up,
36:59it's sending all kinds of weird information to the ECU,
37:01and it's not that it was doing it to safeguard it,
37:03like, the ECU wasn't doing that.
37:05It doesn't know that that's an issue.
37:07It was just reacting to information.
37:08It was just getting information,
37:10so those sensors were going whack.
37:11So anyways, with that said, long story short,
37:13we fully believe that we can go make a lap now.
37:16All right.
37:16Your lap time right now is like four hours, so...
37:18I appreciate that.
37:19You're welcome.
37:20It's a lot of drive time.
37:22Don't slam my door.
37:23All right, so Lucky has been driving like a real ticked-off teenage boy.
37:28By that, I mean he's been acting a real fool,
37:31and the truck hasn't stopped working yet.
37:33So I'm going to say, by all accounts, Lucky legit...
37:37He legit broke it.
37:39It may be fixed right now.
37:40It looks fixed. It appears fixed.
37:42But what's not fixed is his lap time,
37:44because the clock is still running,
37:46and right now it's at 3 1⁄2 hours.
37:48So, Lucky, hit it!
37:50I think that gave me the okay.
37:53All right, if we can just get to turn three,
37:56we're doing real good.
37:57So I'm going to just drive kind of mellow.
38:04That's where we lost him last time.
38:06All right!
38:08Victory!
38:09We are past three.
38:10Okay, we've already gone further than we've ever gone before.
38:13One cone down.
38:15I don't forget about that one cone.
38:17This is the little slalom run.
38:20Two cones, three cones.
38:27I don't like those cones anyway.
38:29Another cone.
38:30Cones talk a lot of trouble.
38:31Another cone. He's got three cones.
38:34Oh, Lucky, go!
38:37Hey, we just finished the lap.
38:39So the tricky part about autocross is sometimes your first time is the best time for a while,
38:57because once you get later in the laps, you start overthinking it.
39:00You think about it too much, and then you start to slow down, which is maybe what's happening right now.
39:06He's either broke or he's wanting to go again because his time was slow.
39:12I missed the shift.
39:15My bad.
39:17Wow. I was like, what's he doing? It was looking good.
39:21Yeah, yeah.
39:22And then you come back with the shifter in hands.
39:24Yeah, I know.
39:25You know what? I have to say it.
39:26Lucky broke it?
39:28Lucky legit broke it.
39:30You know, in my defense, the seat's not bolted in.
39:33Oh, so you're telling me what had happened was the seat was sliding around, so you just ripped the shifter out of the floor?
39:38You know, the way you put it like that makes me really seem at fault.
39:41I'm going to go out on a limb and say, you know what?
39:43People put performance seats in performance cars to keep you in place.
39:46For a reason.
39:47Because the steering wheel and the shifter are not monkey bars.
39:50This is not normal.
39:51I just don't know my own strength. These guns. Sorry. Excuse the drip.
39:56Is that what the kids are saying now?
39:57It's not good. Don't do that. That's so no.
40:01Hey, let's walk over there. I think I got all the way up.
40:05First of all, you know that dip that we drove through that doesn't belong in the middle of the track?
40:09I was trying to keep it cool on the dip, and that's when shifter bailed, and I shortcut it.
40:14I bet you the parts that were missing are sitting right there.
40:16You want to go for a walk? We can take this dog.
40:18We can drive over there. Give me the shifter. I can put her back in gear.
40:21Nah, I'd rather walk. I don't know that I trust you right now.
40:23Okay, so anyways, good news is we fixed one problem. Bad news is made another.
40:29I don't know if we can fix this one.
40:30The big problem was in the back, and we fixed that.
40:32We moved to the front, had a problem. We fixed that.
40:34And now something came apart in the middle.
40:36How did you do that?
40:37This has to be the last thing.
40:38How did you do that?
40:39This has to be the last thing.
40:45Yeah, okay, so today I had some wins and some losses, but I think we're done.
40:49We are absolutely done, I believe, unless we're told to do more stuff.
40:54Nope, there's no shifter in there. I believe that the day is over.
40:58All right, so that is actually it for this episode.
41:01But don't worry, this thing is going to come back with a vengeance again.
41:04This time it will be at HRG Day in Bakersfield at Famoso.
41:07HRG Day, I'm very much looking forward to that.
41:09Me too.
41:10We do have a lot of people to thank though, because overall, I would say that we can count this return to the scene of the accident as a win.
41:16We had a really good lap time today by we, I mean lucky.
41:18Yeah.
41:19And made it past turn three and then got a 45 second lap time, which for reference, the other day, we were seeing like 32, 35 from really, really fast cars.
41:27Yeah, actual race cars, not farm trucks.
41:29So now the culprit, the thing that brought us back here the second time that was a big problem the last time was the rear differential.
41:35Yeah, so we need to thank Quick Performance because we swapped over to a nine inch.
41:39All of their components, it worked out really well.
41:42It was a good install and it held up out here and it did not cause us any grief this time.
41:46Not one iota of problems at all.
41:48In addition to that, when you replace a rear end, you, of course, Hemi swapped the car.
41:52Duh.
41:53So a big thank you to Engine Masters for giving us their Gen 3 Hemi to put into this.
41:57How do we manage that thing with Holley?
41:58Holley, of course.
41:59So a big thanks to Holley for, as always, helping us with our engine management, fuel injection.
42:04We also need to thank them this time because they also hooked us up with these wheels.
42:08Which leads me to, we also need to thank Toyo for the tires.
42:12Also, a thank you to Wilwood, brakes all the way around.
42:14How did it stop out there?
42:15It stopped on a, well, on some parts.
42:18It stopped on some parts.
42:19Right when you dropped them?
42:20But right when I asked it to stop, it stopped, yeah.
42:22That's good.
42:23Which leads me to, American Powertrain, thank you guys.
42:27Lucky owes you an apology.
42:29I'll call you.
42:30I'll call you.
42:31Say sorry.
42:32My bad.
42:33I think we're done for today.
42:34Is that it?
42:35We, yes, we need to leave before we break more stuff.
42:37Have you got social media?
42:38Oh, yes, I do.
42:39I am Alex Taylor Racing.
42:40Do you?
42:41That's funny you would ask.
42:42Yes, I do.
42:43I am Mobile Tech Lucky on all the platforms.
42:44And we are Hot Rod Garage Show.
42:45Yes, we are.
42:46You think I'm gonna be in deep shift?
42:48Oh, you already are.
42:49Oh, man.
42:50My bad.
42:51That's true, I am.
42:52I'm so good.
42:54I'm so good.
42:55I am.
42:56I am.
42:57I am.
42:58And I am.
42:59I'm so good.
43:00I am great.
43:01You're good.
43:02I am.
43:03Loving.
43:04You're good.
