To keep you and your family safe during flooding, there are some key questions you should ask yourself at all stages.
Transcript
00:00Well, we're continuing to watch river forecasts in the northwest, especially in Oregon, where we do expect some rivers to reach flood stage as we head into Friday.
00:09So things to know before, during, and after any type of flooding situation.
00:14These are just good things to keep in mind, even if there isn't an imminent flooding threat where you are.
00:19So before the flood, first, it's knowing your location.
00:21Are you at risk for flooding?
00:24If a river nearby reaches action, moderate, major flood stage, would your home likely flood?
00:30And especially if so, you want to make sure you have an emergency action plan.
00:33Once flood watches, warnings are issued, what are you going to do?
00:37Where are you going to go?
00:38Do you need to evacuate?
00:39These are things to be thinking about ahead of time, just knowing, again, your location.
00:43If an evacuation order is issued, you want to make sure it's not a bad idea to have a go bag ready with some of those essentials,
00:49but especially things to keep in one location that are easy to grab and go, important documents, birth certificates, social security cards,
00:56things like that, insurance information, if you need that physically and don't have just a digital copy of that.
01:02Make sure you move to a safe area while you can, and stay updated on road conditions.
01:06Don't try to move through any flooded roadways.
01:09That is the number one thing to keep in mind during the flood.
01:13You want to make sure you stay away from flood waters so you don't enter into a dangerous situation,
01:18even if it's just a little bit of water and you think you can make it through, never a good idea.
01:23That carries after the natural disaster as well, but you want to make sure you avoid any flooded areas,
01:28disaster areas, especially where first responders might be working.
01:32Any food that was in contact with flood water, really just about anything that was in contact with flood water,
01:36can have contaminants that it has been exposed to, so you want to make sure you discard of those
01:41and stay out of buildings where there was flood water until it's deemed safe to get back in.
