Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison says that he has had "days where I haven't wanted to get out of bed" as he continues his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Reflecting on whether physical injuries have as much effect on footballer's mental health, the England international added that "as long as you have something to focus on" then you can keep going. 00:00Definitely, probably just the same really. It's difficult, it's like taking away the thing that you love, the thing that you do, the thing that drives you. I always just put on this earth to play football. My life is football, I am football kind of thing. So when that's taken away from you, you do feel a bit lost and a bit stuck, especially when it's such a significant amount of time.
00:24So yeah, it definitely takes its toll. There's some dark times, I've had some days where I haven't wanted to get out of bed. But the drive and the motivation of seeing myself back playing makes me get up and get after it. So as long as you can have something to focus on and me getting back on the pitch at the Tottenham Stadium is the end goal, that keeps me going.
