00:00Pazuzu Algarab and a woman who calls herself his wife, Amber Birch, are both now charged with murder.
00:08Ever since Pazuzu was arrested, I've been trying to get past the rumors and the sensationalist headlines
00:12to get to the real story behind this man, his crimes, his victims, and how this could have happened in our community.
00:19For those five years that Josh was missing, Jared did not receive any Social Security money.
00:25It seems like the police just didn't do their job.
00:27And maybe if we could prove that, if we could get back some of the money that Jared was entitled to.
00:34There's these search warrants from 2014, and then we found out that the search warrants were sealed.
00:40There was something in those search warrants that law enforcement didn't want out.
00:4328-year-old Crystal Matlock has been charged with accessory after the fact.
00:48Documents date she assisted Algarab with concealing an unidentified male body between June and August of 2009.
00:55The doctor actually diagnosed him with schizotypal personality disorder.
01:00The guy is clinically psychotic.
01:02Pazuzu Algarab was found unresponsive in his cell at Central Prison at approximately 3 a.m. on the morning of October 28th.
01:11The authorities say it's a suicide, but they don't know exactly how to kill themselves.
01:14And the prison system goes on to suffer zero repercussions.
01:17This is a prepaid collect call from Nathan Anderson, an inmate at Forsyth County Detention Center.
01:25I'm going to get drugs, lots of drugs, and I'll feel better about everything.
01:34It doesn't really matter what I've done.
01:37I look up, and it's midnight, and my son's standing there in the door.
01:42And his face looks swollen, and he's sweaty.
01:45Eyes are bugged out, and they're bloodshot.
01:49That's not your kid.
01:50Eyes are bugged out, and they're bloodshot.
02:20What's become of our America, from the police to the justice system to social services and in our communities in general,
02:31you know, it seems to me there's an entire class of people in this country that are being ignored.
02:37In writing these articles about Pazuzu, our hope was that we could find answers to some of these, you know, pressing questions that were going on in the case,
02:44especially for the victims, especially for the victims, for people like Stacey.
02:47With lack of access and reliable intel, I wasn't able to do that.
02:51Perhaps we built her hopes up a little bit, and perhaps we did Stacey a disservice.
02:57Was there any more I could have done?
02:59I feel like I did everything I could, but did I really?
03:01And maybe not.
03:03I probably fell short.
03:04I really did everything I could have done.
03:33the case is done personal matlock is being let out the prosecution defense attorneys are almost
03:56starting to pack up and it was lunchtime and I was ready to go eat my leftovers that my wife put in my
04:06little lunchbox for the day and Amanda Martin stood up I saw Amanda out of corner of my eye it's almost
04:19like double dutch it's like how do I how do I jump in I'm very often the unexpected visitor to a
04:32courtroom she said she wanted to raise the question of whether these search warrants could now be unsealed
04:38so we had these two layers of problem here you had a sealing order that ran counter to the North
04:50Carolina public records law and counter to the cases interpreting the first amendment usually
04:57search warrant is sealed either to protect the integrity of investigation or to ensure the fair
05:04trial of you need to finish or charge or what was it that was in the search warrants that need to
05:08continue to be sealed we didn't know that the laws of public records are there for very good reasons
05:14and the interest in that is never stronger than when we're talking about oversight if you will of law
05:23enforcement these are people who walk around with guns they arrest people they search people's homes I
05:30mean they have more power than you can imagine and so I'm not saying they shouldn't have that power but
05:37I always feel that the trade-off for that is that we should be able to see how it gets exercised at that
05:44point with Matlock being the final defendant I saw no reason keep them secret any longer because the
05:57investigation was concluded everyone had been brought to justice take the kids to school and
06:05you come home and you turn on the computer and there's you know a story in the Winston-Salem Journal
06:10where old Mike Hewlett's been able to get these search warrants shaking loose and then it's it's it's
06:15that it's that case that's been in the back your mind talking to him and I almost clicked on them that
06:20first time and I'm kind of hovering over the PDFs then you know I go back to the article a few more
06:25times over the next couple days sitting around by yourself thinking is it like an addiction you know
06:31is this this journalism is it's a nasty business and it's a it's an awful addiction and the highs
06:36you get from it will never never make up for the lows and yet you keep doing you keep doing it over and
06:40over again I finally I clicked on that PDF and I opened up these search warrants and I read them I
06:48have never seen a single document come across my desk in my life that was as egregious and that was
06:57as raw an example of signals have been missed bad jobs have been done people have been hurt
07:03five years that's how long it was from when Josh Weschler was murdered until the bodies were found
07:12in Pazuzu's backyard the search warrants proved that this case could have been solved within weeks
07:16of Josh's disappearance where before we only had rumors now I got hard facts and I'm diving back
07:22into the Pazuzu story for one last piece my hope is I can get this community some answers I can find
07:28out why this happened in our hometown out in the boonies driving in the dark in Forsyth County out
07:35beyond where the streetlights are looking for Miss Tarina Billings house to speak to the first person
07:41that made contact with law enforcement and that was Miss Tarina Billings who reported that her father
07:48had helped bury someone possibly Joshua Weschler I want to put a face to the name and see if there's
07:57any legit reason why the sheriff's department decided the witness statement wasn't credible enough
08:02to take seriously hey Tarina Billings yes all right nice to meet you nice to meet you why would
08:07your father be hanging out with someone like 40 some year old yeah whatever the hell that was he had just
08:13recently been through a divorce and started hanging out with Crystal Matlock and I think they were
08:18kind of dating yeah so he did whatever she wanted I remember he came in that night and he came in and
08:29sat down on the end of the couch and he was being really weird not really saying anything I remember
08:36like he had his hands like this and like he went like this like he was smelling his hands and I was like
08:42what is wrong with you are you doing and he asked me have I ever smelled death I see you I come in
08:50tonight you have a nice home you're nice people you have an eight-year-old doing your thing is that the
08:56same person I would have met if I'm the police officer in 2009 it's been nine years yeah except I
09:01was pregnant at that time clearly not you know suffering from the effects of any kind of drug habit
09:06orders and nothing like that's going on with you did you go to college I did you have an education job
09:11career and how did they treat you when you went in there um it was kind of really quick it was only
09:18about 15 minutes that I was there speaking with them they didn't really seem like they cared they
09:23just jotted down parts of what I said and called it a day I kind of forgot about all this so until
09:31years later when it popped up on the news and I was like oh I tried to tell them but they didn't listen
09:36I don't even like that my father was involved in it sorry but um like when this did happen and I've
09:48like found out about it when everybody was arrested I was I kind of I was happy my dad had passed away
09:54because I knew he would be in prison right now for it and he wouldn't make it
10:00I met a very together young woman I met a young woman who is trying pretty hard to be the best that
10:08she can be and then is raising a child and I met a young woman who was very serious and who was very
10:14very credible I see no upside for her on going to law enforcement back then and telling them what
10:21her father told she exposes her father to legal ramifications she exposes her relationship with
10:26her father to they could destroy that because now she's done this and she possibly exposed herself
10:30to physical danger because who knows what those people over knob hill were going to do because no
10:34one seemed to be laying a finger on them
10:36with each shot I took like I just wished that it would be the one that killed me
10:43I just felt like dark
10:46this is a prepaid collect call from Nathan Anderson
10:56an inmate at Johnston Correctional Institution
11:00getting sick of sitting in jail
11:04this is driving me crazy
11:05I couldn't I couldn't get a hold of you know several days and um really worried I was
11:12wigging out about it her phone was going straight to voicemail
11:15well the night when I was sitting in the parking lot I just felt like dark
11:23I didn't even feel like a person anymore I felt like there was no light in my life
11:30I guess I ended up doing what like two grams within like an hour
11:35with each shot I took like I just wished that it would be the one that killed me
11:45so I figured
11:46it was time to be done
11:49finally um
11:56told me and told me that she was uh in detox
11:59and so that was that was a huge relief
12:02you know on Tuesday you know they tell me I got a visit
12:06and I'm like well that's weird because it's the middle of the day my mom only comes and sees me on Sunday
12:10she's like well it must be Jenna
12:12and she didn't know if it was
12:14when I went I like procrastinated for like the entire hour but like the last 15 minutes
12:24um I just he just asked what I had been doing and I was just like well I've been
12:30working on your Christmas present
12:32and I was like okay that's kind of weird
12:36she asked if I wanted a hint what my Christmas present was
12:40and um I'm like sure
12:42so I slapped a picture on the glass because we were between glass
12:51and I slapped a little abstract baby picture
12:56this one my little baby
12:59he's kind of slow sometimes let him figure it out
13:07it took him probably like five minutes and he was just like
13:12are you serious
13:14I was like yeah I'm dead serious
13:17and he's like we're gonna have a baby
13:18I was like yeah
13:20gonna have a baby
13:22May 17th I went to detox
13:27and I woke up at seven o'clock in the morning with the doctor in my face
13:32telling me I was pregnant
13:33five weeks pregnant
13:35two weeks after Pazuzu murders Josh Weschler
13:42Trina Billings goes to the police to tell him what her father told her about her murders
13:45now you know in my opinion the unsealed warrants make it seem like what the sheriff's department
13:49did may have actually made things worse
13:51now I decided to take the documents to an old buddy of mine who's a retired detective
13:55he was actually on the force for 30 years and his perspective in this case is going to be critical
13:59application for search warrant
14:02on August the 4th Foster goes to the location
14:08and actually talks to Pazuzu
14:10it just says he went there
14:12and at some point the detective did tell him
14:15that he'd received information from several individuals
14:18that Pazuzu had shot and killed someone in his basement and buried the body in the backyard
14:23don't know that I would have told all that right then
14:25I would have found some other reason
14:28I'd have wanted to get in the house or walk through the yard
14:31I'd have wanted to make some observations
14:33because if he says I don't know what you're talking about
14:37get off my property and stay off
14:38then you're shot in the foot
14:41I would have probably just come up with something
14:42somebody said you're growing weed in the backyard
14:44and that way
14:46then maybe he would have said
14:48you know especially if that's not true
14:49he's going to say I ain't growing no weed backyard
14:51you can go look
14:51that's what I want
14:53I want him to give me that access
14:55so that I'm looking for these other things
14:58like a body or a mound of dirt
15:00a freshly dug hole or something
15:02so you know
15:03and they could lie to him
15:04I would have probably taken a look
15:06continued to gather my information from sources
15:10and then at some other time
15:11once I was just about ready to get a search warrant
15:14or had the search warrant
15:15then I might would have gone out there
15:17before I executed a search warrant
15:18and said
15:18now guess what your neighbors or people are saying
15:21next is
15:24let's see you got February 9th 2010
15:26you got the two Crimestoppers tips that came in
15:29yes
15:29so right here is a missed opportunity
15:31yes sir
15:31then also on that date
15:33looks like the detective spoke with Stacy Carter
15:37are you telling me
15:39wait wait wait
15:39that on the same day
15:41that I went and reported Josh missing
15:43and told them that he was buried in Pazuzu's yard
15:45on the same day
15:47they had reports about Tommy's murder
15:50the police department did
15:51the police department did
15:52I had no idea
15:54I still thought
15:55they were going to think I was crazy
15:57oh my god
16:05I want to throw up
16:06like
16:07nobody told me this
16:11I know
16:12I had no idea
16:13this
16:14makes me nauseous
16:16I had never heard of Pazuzu until February
16:19and that's when I went to the police
16:21and nobody ever told me that they had already received reports of this happening
16:28I just feel like the whole case was just botched over and over again
16:33since when do you just be like oh hey did you kill somebody
16:35nope I didn't do it
16:36okay cool
16:37like that's not how it works
16:39right
16:40then February the 23rd based on all this information he applies for and is given a search warrant
16:46so they do that search and they find nothing
16:48right
16:49this is the interesting part
16:57Lieutenant Foster had consulted with North Carolina State University about potentially utilizing their equipment to assist with the search
17:04Dr. Oliver's crew was currently about to begin another project
17:08and their services could not be retained until at least two weeks
17:12it is noteworthy to mention that Dr. Oliver had mentioned to Linton Foster that cadaver dogs
17:18may or may not be able to detect a buried body with the given circumstances
17:23the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office as an agency decided that this investigation
17:27could not wait the above stated time
17:30and decided to proceed with cadaver dogs
17:32the irony
17:33they couldn't wait two weeks so we had to wait five years
17:37on November the 8th 2011 Cynthia James came to the Sheriff Forsyth County Sheriff's Office
17:47and requested to speak with a detective about a murder that occurred at her residence 2749
17:52Knob Hill Drive
17:53Cynthia told Detective Ammons that she heard a gunshot
17:57and went to the area where she heard the gunshot
18:00and observed Amber holding the rifle
18:02and the Tommy subject slumped over on the couch
18:06and wouldn't that get your attention
18:07I mean even if you've done a search there
18:09and you came up goose egg
18:11somebody tells me that a murder took place in my house
18:13somebody's mom tells me
18:14and they didn't do anything
18:17and is there a reason?
18:22so I asked that question
18:24we know that Puzuzu was convicted of assaulting his mother
18:29and we also know that Amber Birch was convicted of assaulting his mother
18:34in two different incidents
18:36Amber Birch had been arrested that previous night
18:38November 7th 2011
18:39for a domestic assault
18:40and she was at the jail
18:42Cynthia thought that the information she gave us
18:44would be enough to charge Amber with murder
18:46and became upset when we told her
18:48we still needed additional evidence
18:49since you're the owner of the house
18:50would you allow us to search the house?
18:53yes
18:53and she said no
18:54okay what did they do with that information?
18:56it looks like they didn't do anything with the information
18:58nothing
18:59I mean that's negligence
19:01it's got to be
19:02I mean
19:02or they just didn't care
19:06so I contacted Cynthia
19:11to see if she would speak to me
19:13and really did not think that she would
19:15but she did
19:16hey
19:17oh hi
19:18when he killed Josh
19:20what was that?
19:21that was the dark side
19:22since the sheriff's department discovered bodies in their backyard
19:32Pazuzu's mother Cynthia
19:34she's been something of a cipher
19:35she's managed to stay out of the papers
19:37and nobody's been able to figure out where she was
19:39she won't talk about the murder
19:41she won't talk about her son assaulting her
19:43she won't talk about anything
19:44you know
19:45now Tim Wooten helped me track her down
19:47and like so many other people close to Pazuzu though
19:49she really didn't want to talk to me
19:51I had an idea though
19:53that she might talk to Miss Stacey Carter
19:54so I contacted Cynthia
20:03to see if she would speak to me
20:04and really did not think that she would
20:07but she did agree to meet me
20:09so my intention in going and seeing her
20:11was not so much
20:13to shame her
20:15or blame her
20:16or
20:16or to get mad
20:18I just want to know the whole story
20:22hi
20:33oh hi
20:34hi
20:35Stacey
20:36Stacey
20:36nice to meet you
20:37nice to meet you
20:38how's your son
20:44he's good
20:45yeah
20:46he's um
20:47he's 13 now
20:49so
20:50yeah
20:52growing up fast
20:53they do
20:54they
20:55once they hit
20:56teenagers
20:56it's like
20:57where does the time go
20:59yeah
21:00um
21:01people keep asking me
21:03like what was Josh doing there
21:04and I was
21:05I just
21:06I didn't know
21:07I didn't know they were friends
21:08I had never heard of Pez until
21:10you know
21:10well after that
21:11right
21:12so I was curious
21:13you know
21:14about
21:14why he was there
21:16and
21:17you know
21:18especially
21:19like what their relationship was
21:21they were just friends
21:22as far as
21:23I knew
21:24they liked the same music
21:25and
21:27I think Josh
21:29we had
21:29just a little grill
21:30and I think he cooked
21:32grilled
21:32that definitely sounds like Josh
21:34grilling and music
21:35yeah
21:36Josh would come over
21:38and sometimes
21:39John would say
21:40well
21:41you know
21:42he don't have anywhere
21:42to stay tonight
21:43or they've turned his heat off
21:45or something
21:45yeah
21:46and
21:46can he sleep on the couch
21:48so
21:48I didn't have a problem
21:50with it
21:51because I
21:51I enjoyed
21:52John having friends
21:54yeah
21:55and people coming over
21:56and
21:57but when he killed Josh
22:00what was that
22:02I mean was that
22:03that was the dark side
22:05like that was
22:06that was the dark side
22:08and that was something
22:09that came out of him
22:11that I don't know
22:12where it came from
22:13I really honestly think
22:17that he just didn't know
22:18what he was doing
22:19best I can recall
22:25when the incident happened
22:26I was getting ready
22:27for work
22:28and
22:29I just hear
22:30all this noise
22:31sounded like firecrackers
22:33and it was in July
22:34so
22:35you know
22:35I thought
22:36it could be firecrackers
22:38so
22:38I came out of my room
22:40and
22:41John
22:41he was not himself
22:44he was on
22:44drugs
22:46or
22:46alcohol
22:48or both
22:49probably
22:49and I didn't even know
22:51that he owned
22:52a gun
22:53and
22:55I don't know
22:56he didn't even know
22:57what he was doing
22:58he did not know
23:00what he was doing
23:00why do you think he did it
23:01were they fighting
23:02about something
23:03no
23:03it was just
23:04all so quick
23:05and
23:06I'm trying to take care
23:09of John
23:10and then here's
23:11Josh
23:12lying on the floor
23:13and I gotta protect
23:14my son
23:15and I'm freaking out
23:16and I don't know
23:17what to do
23:17and I had to get out
23:18of the house
23:19and he's got this gun
23:20so I thought
23:20he could
23:21shoot me
23:23had he threatened
23:23you before
23:24no
23:25no I mean
23:26you know
23:27all parents have
23:28arguments
23:29and don't agree
23:31so then how about
23:35after that
23:36I mean
23:36I didn't know
23:38what to do
23:38I just
23:39did you know
23:39what they'd done
23:40with him
23:41yes
23:42John was just
23:44so
23:45freaked out
23:47after he
23:47became coherent
23:49that
23:50I guess
23:51he didn't know
23:51what else to do
23:52but to bury him
23:54I want people
23:56other people
23:57to know
23:58that
23:58yes
23:58John had
23:59some mental
24:00problems
24:00but
24:01he wasn't
24:02a bad guy
24:04they diagnosed
24:08him as being
24:09agoraphobic
24:10schizophrenic
24:11psychotic
24:12and
24:13that's when
24:14you know
24:15I started
24:15getting help
24:16for him
24:17but to continue
24:18with the psychiatrist
24:19and so forth
24:20takes a lot of money
24:21it just
24:26it's hard
24:26to match
24:27this
24:27person
24:28who's your son
24:29that
24:30you love so much
24:31and
24:32did so much
24:33for
24:33and how you
24:34saw him
24:34with the view
24:35that the rest
24:35of the world
24:36has
24:36you know
24:38you gotta remember
24:39the good things
24:40yeah
24:40and I block out
24:42any of the bad
24:43things
24:44you know
24:44he
24:45he wasn't
24:47by any means
24:48an angel
24:50but he
24:51sure wasn't
24:52a bad person
24:53or a boogeyman
24:54or whatever
24:54phrases
24:57people have
24:58called him
24:59well I know
25:01you've got
25:01a long way
25:02to go back home
25:03I just wanted
25:04to thank you
25:05again for coming
25:06and
25:06thank you
25:07hug
25:08you know
25:10my perception
25:11of Cynthia
25:11is that
25:12she's somebody
25:12who's very
25:13disconnected
25:14and kind of
25:15shut down
25:15I feel like
25:17at some point
25:18she was being
25:19terrorized
25:19and she didn't
25:21want to admit it
25:22that she was
25:23afraid of her son
25:24I don't know
25:25do I forgive
25:28Cynthia
25:29um
25:30yes and no
25:33I
25:35have
25:36compassion for Cynthia
25:37and I'm sympathetic
25:38towards her
25:39as a community
25:40we've got to be
25:41prepared to reach
25:42into that darkness
25:43and help somebody
25:45out
25:45it's a failure
25:46on society
25:48that she wasn't
25:49able to reach out
25:50and have help
25:51coming at her
25:53from all directions
25:54however
25:56you know
25:58she did some things
26:00that were unforgivable
26:01I mean
26:01she saw Josh
26:02die
26:04and
26:06she
26:08let it be
26:10covered up
26:10it could have
26:12stopped there
26:13I think it's hard
26:15to imagine
26:15you know
26:16your own child
26:17doing something
26:19like that
26:19you know
26:20this is
26:25John
26:25my baby
26:27and he's
26:28about 12
26:28looks a little bit
26:30like me
26:31don't you think
26:31today he was born
26:35show me
26:36the little guy
26:36and here's
26:39my little warrior
26:40again
26:40I think her heart
26:43is
26:43is broken
26:44irreparably broken
26:46I mean I don't think
26:48she's got a happy ending
26:49and here's one
26:54of his teddy bears
26:55that we
26:59put in the crib
27:02with him
27:02I just want to have
27:10good memories
27:10of my son
27:11and when I called
27:18I said look
27:19my son
27:19went out last night
27:20and he didn't come back
27:21and they told me
27:22you know
27:23to go look in the ditch
27:24it's like
27:25it's just another
27:26dead one gone
27:27another dead
27:28black one gone
27:29the way I see it
27:39there are real consequences
27:40resulting from
27:40the poor police work
27:41reveal
27:42that search warrant
27:42but perhaps the most
27:46tragic thing about it
27:47is it's possible
27:47that the murder
27:48of Joseph Chandler
27:49who we still really
27:50don't even know
27:50that much about
27:51could have been avoided
27:52by the time
28:01they find
28:02Joseph Chandler
28:02down by the
28:03Yadkin River
28:03there's two guys
28:04that have been
28:04in that backyard
28:05for almost a year
28:06there were multiple
28:07opportunities
28:07law enforcement
28:08interdicted here
28:09and probably
28:10saved her son's life
28:11he never has to even
28:12meet these people
28:12adding insult to injury
28:15the crime that took
28:16her son's life
28:16was all but dismissed
28:17by the justice system
28:18I mean look at it
28:19Rizzy was given
28:2016 months
28:20time served
28:21Pazuzu was let loose
28:23on probation
28:23I'd like to meet
28:25I'd like to meet
28:25Miss Chandler to find
28:25out what she thinks
28:26that she and her son
28:28were so easily
28:28dismissed by the system
28:29and when I called
28:31and I said look
28:32my son is 30 years old
28:34and he
28:34he's uh
28:35he went out last night
28:37and he didn't come back
28:38they told me to look
28:39in a ditch
28:40I told them I'm going
28:41out there to look
28:42for my son
28:43and they told me
28:44you know
28:45to go look
28:46in a ditch
28:46it's like
28:47he's just another
28:49dead man gone
28:49that's what I said
28:51and when you say
28:53dead one
28:54another dead
28:55black one gone
28:55it was about
28:591230 when they
29:00came down
29:00the hill
29:01in their little
29:01black car
29:02and they said
29:04Miss Chandler
29:05we found your son
29:06you know
29:07and I just
29:08fell out on the floor
29:10I got in here
29:14and I screamed
29:15and I cried
29:16and I just threw
29:17myself in the shower
29:17I said
29:18Lord you gotta help me
29:19humble me
29:20take the hate
29:21out of my heart
29:22I wanted to kill
29:23the people that hurt
29:24my son
29:24and it took me
29:25almost
29:26five six years
29:28to be where I'm at
29:29right now
29:30how did
29:31law enforcement
29:32and even the DA's
29:34office and folks
29:34treat you up
29:35through the trial
29:36the arrest
29:37and all that
29:37they were always
29:38we'll call you
29:39when we're gonna
29:39have the trial
29:40that's all I ever heard
29:41I'm still lost
29:43in the dark
29:43about a whole lot
29:44of stuff
29:45have you ever seen
29:45search warrants
29:46do you mind
29:47if I show you
29:48now I'm having
29:55a little panic attack
29:56when my heart
29:58starts pumping
29:59real hard
29:59it's heart
30:02grease
30:02so the more
30:03you keep talking
30:04it just
30:05hash up
30:06a lot of stuff
30:07and it's like
30:08I knew it was a lot
30:14of wrongdoings
30:15everywhere
30:15I just couldn't
30:17pinpoint it
30:17I had nobody
30:18to help me
30:19I had no voice
30:21so who killed
30:22Joseph
30:22him or
30:23Nicholas
30:25I don't know
30:26and the judge
30:26one of the quotes
30:27from the judge
30:28is why in the middle
30:28of the night
30:29would you be out
30:30target practicing
30:30or messing with a rifle
30:31is still a mystery
30:32to me
30:32it wasn't a mystery
30:33when you take
30:34a black
30:35man
30:37out to
30:39Yacking River
30:40you don't know him
30:42he don't know you
30:43that wasn't a target
30:45practice for the water
30:46that was a target
30:47practice for my son
30:48as a young boy
30:50growing up
30:50he didn't fit in
30:52children was always
30:54hitting him
30:54and calling him
30:55names
30:56and he just
30:56felt out of place
30:58that's what his
30:59whole life was about
30:59somebody was always
31:00jumping on
31:01so when he became
31:02a teenager
31:03he met other people
31:04and you know
31:05then the bad boys came
31:07my son was 30 years old
31:16I saw great potentials
31:19and I saw him
31:19going places
31:20he joined
31:21coronary school
31:22he was trying
31:23to get his life together
31:24one of the things
31:26that kind of keeps
31:26coming back to me
31:27with this
31:28is the notion
31:29of parenthood
31:30and as
31:31during this whole process
31:32my children have
31:33gotten older
31:33and I'm starting
31:35to go through
31:35stuff with my kids
31:36you feel
31:36one of them
31:38you know
31:38just kind of
31:39slipping away
31:39and hanging out
31:41doing with people
31:42you shouldn't be
31:42hanging out with
31:43the same kind of
31:43people that ended up
31:44over there
31:44at Nam Hill
31:46at Pazusa's house
31:47my son's heading
31:49right there
31:49I feel you
31:50my heart is
31:52going out to you
31:53and I really don't
31:54know what to say
31:55right now
31:56is that you gotta
31:57be strong
31:57spend more time
31:59with him
31:59do more
32:02father and son
32:03things with your son
32:04yes ma'am
32:05thank you
32:08you're welcome
32:10you're welcome
32:11you're gonna be fine
32:13you're gonna be fine
32:14I hope you are
32:16you take control
32:17don't feed him
32:18to them people
32:19out there
32:19I will
32:20okay
32:21and please take care
32:22of yourself
32:22oh I'm doing that
32:23but you're gonna be fine
32:25take hold of your son
32:26honey
32:26I wish I had one more
32:28I used to fantasize
32:39about like
32:40you know
32:40getting a crew together
32:41with guns
32:42and going over
32:43and killing Pazuzu
32:44ourselves
32:44you could have
32:45saved two lives
32:46I've always been a coward
32:48in a lot of ways
32:58when I got locked up
32:59it was a relief
33:01I needed to be locked up
33:03honestly
33:04to get clean
33:05I got out of prison
33:15I've been clean
33:16six months
33:17on and off heroin
33:19for nine years
33:20since I was 19
33:23I'm 28 now
33:25been busy as hell
33:27just you know
33:29going to
33:30doctors
33:31psychiatrists
33:32substance abuse
33:33group meetings
33:34the one major goal
33:38that I really have
33:38is just being a father
33:40I want to be a good father
33:46when they told me
33:49I was pregnant
33:50I kind of went through
33:51like a
33:52three or four day
33:54shock
33:55where I realized
33:56like wow
33:57yeah
33:57I'm really gonna
33:58have to give this up
33:59and not just give it up
34:00for like a little while
34:01I have to give it up
34:02for like
34:03the rest of my life
34:04I don't know
34:07my
34:07my
34:07feelings towards
34:09Jenna are
34:09complicated
34:10complicated
34:10um
34:11I still
34:12love her
34:13deeply
34:14me and Nate
34:15are still
34:18in love
34:18it's just
34:19complicated
34:20we're going
34:23to see
34:23if maybe
34:24we can become
34:25a family
34:26like
34:26an actual
34:28like living
34:28together
34:29mommy
34:31daddy
34:31baby
34:32family
34:33or if
34:34we're gonna
34:34have to be
34:35an alternative
34:36family
34:36and maybe
34:37live separately
34:39and co-parent
34:40okay
34:44so your due date
34:45is January 1st
34:46which makes you
34:4730 weeks
34:48and 6 days
34:49today
34:49okay
34:49alright
34:50you see that
34:51little flutter
34:51right there
34:52that's baby's heartbeat
34:53he's awake
35:01all right
35:04I'm just gonna
35:04jiggle him up
35:05okay
35:05when you press
35:07on him
35:07does he usually
35:08move
35:08uh
35:10yeah
35:10or jiggle him
35:11around
35:12I think we're
35:13gonna have to
35:13get him to
35:14move
35:14okay
35:14my baby's asleep
35:16you know Jenna
35:17one thing too
35:18is after you
35:19take your medication
35:20he's not being
35:21lazy
35:21he's being
35:22thoracic
35:23he's really
35:24kind of drugged
35:24right now
35:25from your mouth
35:28sounds awful
35:29you said it
35:29always calmed him
35:30down
35:31I feel guilty
35:33I take
35:35Subutex now
35:36which is a
35:37mono
35:39ingredient
35:40shall we say
35:41of Suboxone
35:42um
35:44for pregnant
35:45women
35:45um
35:46it's just
35:47missing the
35:47ingredient
35:48that harms
35:48fetus
35:49unfortunately
35:51the baby
35:53will
35:53it will
35:55it's highly
35:55possible
35:56that the
35:56baby
35:56will go
35:58through
35:58withdrawals
35:58a lot
35:59of babies
35:59are able
36:00to come
36:00out
36:01and be
36:02detoxed
36:04and not
36:05really go
36:05through anything
36:06very harsh
36:08except for
36:08maybe like
36:09some shaking
36:10I don't know
36:11if I believe
36:12this but I
36:12kind of have
36:13to believe it
36:13is it's
36:14probably not
36:15going to be
36:16that bad
36:17in the
36:30search warrants
36:30it mentions
36:31Nate Anderson
36:31that he was
36:32hanging around
36:32the house
36:33at the time
36:33of these murders
36:34but they also
36:34say that he
36:35claims he
36:36wasn't aware
36:36of what was
36:36going on
36:37around him
36:37now consider
36:38all the rumors
36:39that were flying
36:39around at the time
36:40and that he
36:40was part of
36:40Pazuzu's inner
36:41circle
36:41I gotta be honest
36:43with you
36:43I find that
36:44hard to believe
36:44I don't think
36:48I wanted to know
36:49what they were
36:49doing
36:50I do remember
36:51there was one
36:52point where
36:53I used to
36:55fantasize about
36:56like you know
36:56getting a crew
36:57together with
36:58guns and going
36:59over and killing
36:59Pazuzu
37:00ourselves
37:01and I
37:02you could have
37:02saved two lives
37:03I mean
37:06because let me
37:06tell you
37:06Matt Flowers
37:07went to
37:09in person
37:10inside the
37:11county sheriff's
37:12apartment
37:12yeah
37:12what's different
37:13between you
37:14and Matt Flowers
37:15what makes you
37:15guys different
37:16guys
37:16you're kind of
37:16raised in the
37:17same kind of
37:17place
37:18I've always
37:21been a coward
37:22you know
37:24that maybe
37:24I could have
37:25helped
37:26you know
37:27avert
37:27another life
37:28being taken
37:29so does
37:32this story
37:32matter
37:33is it
37:33something
37:34that needs
37:34to be
37:34forgotten
37:35and let's
37:35just all
37:35move on
37:36or is this
37:36something we
37:37need to
37:37maybe not
37:37dwell on
37:38but we need
37:38to face it
37:39deal with it
37:40and understand
37:41anything that
37:42gets swept
37:43under the rug
37:43is still there
37:44I always need
37:47to keep
37:47that darkness
37:48in the rearview
37:49mirror
37:50so I can
37:51look and
37:51remind myself
37:52that it's
37:53there
37:53and that it's
37:54you know
37:55I'm still
37:57only one choice
37:57away from
37:58reverting
37:58right back
37:59there
38:00and I told
38:05the detective
38:05if you guys
38:06don't do
38:06anything about
38:06it I'm
38:07gonna kill
38:07Pazuzu
38:07he said
38:07well I'll
38:08be right
38:08back
38:08and he
38:08came back
38:09with a
38:09really big
38:09file
38:09maybe the
38:19most disturbing
38:20thing that the
38:21search warrant
38:21showed in my
38:22opinion is that
38:23time and again
38:23it seems that
38:24people told the
38:24police what
38:25Pazuzu was
38:26doing and for
38:26one reason or
38:27another they
38:28didn't manage to
38:28stop him for
38:29five years
38:29finally took his
38:31own buddy Matt
38:31Flowers to get
38:32him to act
38:33I mean I'd love
38:34to know what it
38:34was that Matt
38:35said to him that
38:35finally lit a fire
38:36under him and got
38:37him to take real
38:38action
38:38where you going
38:43to school at
38:44for psych tech
38:44oh right
38:45I'm gonna have my
38:45associates knocked
38:46out and then I'm
38:47gonna go to
38:47Winston-Salem State
38:49and get a bachelor
38:49what are you gonna
38:50take over there
38:50criminal justice
38:51oh right
38:52what are you gonna
38:53do with criminal
38:53justice
38:54PI
38:54right on
38:56the time you
38:57were interviewed
38:57down at the
38:59sheriff's office
38:59how were you
39:01treated then
39:01how did they
39:02they seem to be
39:03taking you seriously
39:03oh yeah
39:04I mean because I
39:05went in there
39:05with a real serious
39:07attitude also
39:07yeah
39:08and told them
39:10I didn't feel like
39:10they were doing
39:10anything
39:11I didn't feel like
39:12they were doing
39:12shit
39:12did you challenge
39:13the officer
39:14to ask people
39:14what you
39:14totally did
39:15I was going to
39:16take it into my
39:17own hands
39:17and I really
39:18really do something
39:19and I told the
39:20detective
39:20you know
39:21everything
39:22I was like
39:22here's the house
39:23here's the yard
39:24here's the pool
39:24that's where I
39:26believe the body's
39:26at
39:26I was like
39:27if you guys
39:28don't do anything
39:28about it
39:28I'm gonna kill
39:29Pazuzu
39:29three days later
39:32they had
39:32it was completely
39:34over
39:34I think it's how
39:35serious I was
39:35about it
39:36really
39:37yeah
39:38I even told him
39:38I was like
39:39if I go do this
39:39I'll come back
39:40here
39:40and I'll
39:41turn myself in
39:42but I just
39:43don't want you
39:43to know that
39:44this has happened
39:45you know what I
39:45mean
39:45I can believe
39:46you do it
39:46I can believe
39:48you have enough
39:48sense of right
39:49and wrong
39:49to do it
39:50but should it be
39:51that's what it
39:51takes
39:51law enforcement
39:53could have done
39:53more than what
39:55they did
39:55100%
39:56you're the guy
39:58who steps out
39:58and does something
39:59is this a matter
40:00of you know
40:01heroism
40:01because you step
40:02forward and you
40:03know put the
40:04finger when
40:04and put your
40:05name to it
40:05yeah I'm trying
40:06to keep that
40:07I don't really
40:08like the name
40:09hero you know
40:09what I mean
40:09I feel like I'll
40:12be a bad person
40:13if I didn't do
40:13something about it
40:14I just didn't want
40:15anyone else to get
40:15hurt
40:16that's pretty much
40:16what it boils down
40:17to
40:21one of the things
40:33that I found out
40:33when reading the
40:34search for it
40:35was that Matt
40:36Flowers was the
40:38reason why they
40:40Josh and Tommy
40:40were found
40:41I think that we
40:44can take this
40:45as a learning
40:45opportunity
40:46he is really
40:49the hero of the
40:50story in so many
40:51ways
40:52so I got a
40:53tattoo of St.
40:54Michael slaying
40:55Lucifer
40:56we did this
40:56when Pazuzu
40:57like pretty much
40:59went down
40:59we're gonna put
41:00the death date
41:01when he when he
41:01passed away
41:02which is October
41:0328th 2015
41:04all right
41:11man
41:11check it out
41:12yes
41:13hardcore
41:15you do wonders
41:27with slutty rags
41:28I don't want
41:31Josh's death
41:32to be in vain
41:32I want something
41:34to come out of it
41:35I'm co-founding
41:36a non-profit
41:37called Happy Roots
41:38with a goal
41:40to reach out
41:41to at-risk youth
41:43and people
41:45in the community
41:45that need help
41:46all kids
41:48and calls
41:49don't please
41:49come on down
41:50oh my
41:52watch
41:52you guys look
41:53so great
41:54so you can look
41:55at the story
41:56and you can say
41:57well the government
41:57failed
41:58or society failed
41:59but that's not
42:00really helpful
42:01the solution
42:03to this
42:04is in community
42:06efforts
42:07building community
42:08and creating
42:09opportunities
42:10and making sure
42:12that the individuals
42:13that are falling
42:14through the cracks
42:15don't
42:16and making sure
42:21are not
42:22happy
42:23and trying
42:24to help
42:24get back
42:25to the story
42:25and their
42:26will be
42:27as the
42:28재료로
42:29and their
42:29will be
42:30as the
42:35as the
42:35and the
42:36will be
42:36known
42:37and their
42:38will be
42:38and their
42:39and their
42:40will be
42:41again
42:41and their
42:42will be
42:43So what's the ending here?
43:13Old Pazuzu was dead, and he took Josh Weschler, Tommy Dean, Wilson, Joseph Chandler with him.
43:19At the end of the day, there was no big conspiracy, no demonic evil to blame.
43:24Just broken people slipping through the cracks of a broken system in any town in America.
43:30But that's our America.
43:32Those cracks are on our sidewalk, and it's our job to fix them.
43:35The dead are gone, but those of us who are still around, we have work to do.
43:46The dead are gone.
