00:00Rescued as an orphan and hand raised under veterinary care, Piglet is finally free.
00:09Her release is a testament to the efforts of conservationists, but she's part of a species that's grappling with car strikes, deforestation and disease.
00:1965% of the koalas that were living here were not going to be with us for much longer, all of them infected with chlamydia disease.
00:26It's highly likely this site otherwise could have become a koala graveyard rather than a pure habitat.
00:31Here in Pimpamah on the northern Gold Coast, 120 koalas live among the trees.
00:37This is the bullseye of koala habitat and radiating out from that is a number of habitats that connect to this site.
00:43So it is absolutely essential that koalas in this area are 100% protected and 100% healthy.
00:49The Queensland Government is drafting a new strategy to protect populations across the South East.
00:55We want to look at habitat protection, habitat restoration, monitoring, mapping, the health of koalas.
01:01We want to leave no stone unturned.
01:03Queenslanders have until mid-March to have their say on the management plan which will include a new advisory council to roll out the strategy.
01:11We'll work to turn that around hopefully by the middle of 2026 so that people can see the final strategy and what our goal is for the next 5, 10, 15 years.
01:20It's an opportunity for us to reverse the endangered registration of these animals and reversing an extinction decline into a population increase.
01:29So they won't just survive but thrive.
