China says U.S. arms sales heightens Taiwan war risk

China has condemned a record US$11.1 billion U.S. arms sale to Taiwan, saying the deal is “speeding up” the threat of war in the Taiwan Strait.

00:33The ministry on Friday said its military would step up training and take forceful measures

00:38to safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the deal.

00:44The package comes as Beijing ramps up military and political pressure on Taiwan,

00:49which China considers its own territory.

00:52While Washington has formal diplomatic relations with Beijing,

00:56it maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan and remains the island's most important arms supplier.
