00:00His body just gave out and he collapsed.
00:04His owner started pitting him to get up and people were like,
00:08what are you doing? This horse needs help.
00:11Why are you slapping him?
00:12Because we're trying to get him up.
00:13He clearly ain't trying to get up.
00:19Then finally the mounted police came over to try to save Ryder's life.
00:24They iced him, they poured water on Ryder.
00:30It was his story that educated millions and millions of people
00:33about the truth behind the life of a carriage horse.
00:37That's how we see pretty much all of these horses collapse
00:40while they all get perfect health records
00:43because there's no oversight.
00:50Many people think that these horses live in Central Park
00:53and they're frolicking on the grass.
00:56Not at all.
00:57They are never touching grass.
01:00After a whole day of being worked relentlessly,
01:02the horses have to go through the worst of New York City midtown traffic
01:08to get to these multi-level old buildings
01:11where they then are placed in these tiny, tiny stalls.
01:15It's like they're prisoners in some kind of labor camp.
01:18The way the system is set up makes it very difficult to save any of these horses.
01:27It's important to understand that this is a private business.
01:30The owners of these horses have complete control over them.
01:34There's no independent outside vets ever checking on these horses.
01:38The reason it's a miracle when we are able to rescue
01:42because the owners of these horses don't want any truth to come out.
01:47Even when we have offered to purchase them, they refuse.
01:50The only way to identify the carriage horse in New York City is that they have a four-digit hoof ID,
01:57but most of the time, the owner will sand that off before they discard these horses.
02:04That's exactly what would have happened to the horse, Chance, had we not intervened and rescued her.
02:14Chance had been a New York City carriage horse for only a few years,
02:19but in that time, due to the deep neglect,
02:22she was no longer able to make a profit for her owner, so they just got rid of her.
02:27Thankfully, we were able to get Chance and let her finally have a real retirement.
02:34But Whit took months before Chance became the happy, active, alert horse that she is today.
02:46We can't change what happened to Ryder,
02:49but we can use his story to help pass Ryder's law
02:53that would protect all of these other horses that are still suffering on New York City streets
02:58so that we can get them into these rescue sanctuaries and farms
03:01where they can finally be horses.
03:06New York City is one of the last large cities that still has horse carriages.
03:10The people that are involved with this business have a lot of influence.
03:14They have power over people in power.
03:17Right now, the head of the city council, Adrian Adams, has been blocking Ryder's law.
03:22But we do have a lot of momentum on our side.
03:25The majority of New Yorkers, the Central Park Conservancy,
03:29some council members, all of them came out in favor of Ryder's law.
03:34It can seem cliche, but it makes a big impact when your elected official directly hears from you,
03:42whether that's a phone call or an email,
03:44that you're expecting them to do the right thing, pass Ryder's law.
03:47You can never be on the wrong side of history when you're protecting animals.
