On Monday, China announced their blockade-style military drill “Justice Mission 2025.” They declared seven restricted zones around Taiwan, and deployed record numbers of ships and warplanes around the country.
Beijing also launched rockets into waters surrounding Taiwan during the drills. Taiwan’s defense ministry says some of China’s rockets landed within Taiwan’s 24-nautical mile contiguous zone, the closest they’ve ever come to Taiwan’s main island in a live-fire drill.
The defense ministry tracked 207 aircraft and 49 naval vessels across two days of exercises. Ocean affairs officials note Chinese ships have been moving away from Taiwan as the drills are concluded.
However, Taiwan remains on high alert as Chinese ships and vessels gradually depart from their positions around the country’s main island.
