China will impose additional 55% tariffs on beef imports on major suppliers as Beijing moves to protect its domestic livestock industry facing oversupply and falling prices.

00:22The additional 55% tariffs will apply when shipments exceed said quarters.

00:27For 2026, the total import quota is set at 2.7 million metric tons.

00:33Brazil receives the largest share at just over 41%, followed by Argentina and Uruguay.

00:39Australia and the US were allocated more modest quotas of around 200,000 and 160,000 metric tons, respectively.

00:47The measures will take effect from January 1st and run for three years,

00:51with the overall quota set to increase gradually through 2028.
