Government will continue the war on crime as the country heads into 2026.
This from Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who outlines a mandate to her Cabinet Ministers to ensure that the country recovers in a number of areas.

00:00Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa highlights a demand for accountability as the country enters into 2026,
00:07which she says should also be done with renewed confidence, clear direction and a strong sense of responsibility.
00:14She outlines that her government has been entrusted by the people to restore seriousness to governance
00:19in a manner that produce results, safety to communities and fairness to working families.
00:24Passat-Bissessa says at this time public safety remains atop her list of priorities,
00:30adding that her government will continue to confront violent crime, gang activity and narcotics trafficking.
00:36She expresses what she calls an unwavering commitment towards this going into 2026.
00:42The Prime Minister says, quote,
00:44We have strengthened strategic alliances with international partners, particularly the United States,
00:51to disrupt transnational crime networks, intercept illegal firearms and secure our borders by land, sea and air, end quote.
00:59The results, according to her, are crime reduction and stronger enforcement outcomes.
01:04To this end, Passat-Bissessa states, quote,
01:07This is not a temporary focus. It is a sustained national effort.
01:12Trinidad and Tobago will not be a corridor for criminal enterprise.
01:16In 2026, we will continue to apply relentless pressure on gangs, illegal firearms and narcotics traffickers
01:23while strengthening intelligence-led policing and international cooperation, end quote.
01:29She cites the passing of the stand-your-ground law and the enactment of the fireworks law
01:34as some of her administration's initiatives to restoring law and order in the country.
01:39The Prime Minister says steps have also been taken in health by way of reopening the Kuva Children's Hospital,
01:45in education through laptops, and on the labor front.
01:49The promise kept to public servants through a cash advance on their back pay for Christmas.
01:54Pertaining to the latter, she says,
01:56structured negotiations continue to finalize the remaining areas lawfully and sustainably.
02:03Additionally, Passat-Bissessa says, quote,
02:05I have issued a clear mandate to every cabinet minister and government agency
02:10that this year must be a year of economic rebuilding, recovery, and delivery.
02:16Inefficiency, delay, and waste will not be tolerated, end quote.
02:20She indicates that this will be done through the execution of coordinated and targeted programs,
02:26which will support SMEs, create jobs, strengthen infrastructure,
02:29and accelerate the energy and non-energy sectors.
02:32She stresses, however, that economic recovery can only be done alongside public safety.
02:38And so, the Prime Minister says, the country heads into 2026 with, quote,
02:44confidence grounded in achievement and strengthened by resolve.
02:48The year ahead will demand discipline, unity, and hard work, but will also bring opportunity, end quote.
