00:00New York City ushered in the new year with a new mayor as Zoran Mamdani took the oath of office as mayor at midnight on Thursday.

00:10The private swearing-in ceremony, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, was held at the historic Old City Hall subway station,

00:18a stunning architectural marvel with arched ceilings that's been closed since 1945.

00:24Good evening, everyone, and Happy New Year to all of you.

00:28And I can't think of a better way to usher in 2026 than to be amongst family and friends and to inaugurate the man who will bring about a new era of progress, promise, and prosperity for New York City.

00:45Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran, marking a historic moment as the first Muslim leader of the U.S.'s biggest city.
