00:00The U.S. has granted an annual license to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, also known as TSMC,
00:08allowing it to import U.S. chip-making equipment to its facilities in Nanjing, China.
00:13South Korea's Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have also received similar import licenses.
00:21TSMC says the approval is necessary to ensure uninterrupted fab operations and product deliveries.
00:27Its Nanjing plant produces 60nm and other mature node chips and not its most advanced semiconductors,
00:35although the company also operates a chip-making facility in Shanghai.
00:40In its 2024 annual report, TSMC said the Nanjing site accounted for about 2.4% of its total revenue.
00:49Previously, Asian chipmakers benefited from exemptions to Washington's sweeping export controls on chip-related technologies to China,
00:56as part of the U.S. efforts to maintain a technological edge over Beijing.
01:02But those privileges known as validated end-user status had expired on December 31,
01:07meaning the companies now require export licenses to continue operations into 2026.
