01:23million Brits heading to Greece every year I found a home in need of TLC on the Ionian island Corfu we've

01:32holidayed in Greece together we fell in love and then when we saw it the area I didn't fall in love

01:38with her Mrs Carl Mrs C I love Corfu I can't lie I come here every year honestly it feels like a

01:48second home I have hardly done any exploring because I just lie on my back with a book but

01:53every single restaurant in every single bar know me strangely nicknamed the Emerald Isle Corfu is full

02:02full of lush landscapes jaw-dropping historical sites and was put on the map for us Brits by famous

02:09conservationist Gerald Durrell who fell in love with the islands flora and fauna

02:18Greece has got so much to offer you got all the deep stuff like the mythology and Hercules and all that

02:24and then you have the camp fabulousness of Mamma Mia and then you've got Shirley Valentine so I want

02:30to have a bit of everything and I also want to find a Greek God a man oh that's gorgeous

02:39just an hour's drive north of Corfu town on the east coast with stunning views across the sea to

02:47Albania our new fixer-upper is nestled in the hillside village of Kokini we have never done a

02:55family holiday home so close to the sea as well so that is what we're doing this year I'm I'm like

03:03living a dream I think that the house is gonna be a lot smaller than the one we did last year that's

03:10cool which is means I think less work yes this is my fall for innovation I've learned so much I feel

03:18I know now about 40 percent of the names of the equipment I will be using so that's progress I

03:24just feel like bring it on hit me with me here we are where is it that's here

03:33hang on it's a dump don't leave us here let's just stay positive look what's that someone's written

03:55keep out condemned and it's in blood it feels like there's all diseases in there and if you open

04:02the door you release them in flies yeah yes that's why

05:38it I mean the house is disheveled enough but then to have an outside staircase as well just doesn't make

05:46sense I mean I'm old now I'm old I need to wee twice sometimes during the night and this is an orange

05:53tree Alan so it's like half garden half lay by oh this is just disappointing no it's not let's get

06:03up the stairs oh Alan this is cute this is cute look there's a mushroom on the scene oh no that's a

06:15not yet that's a mushroom oh my god look at the view now that view is worth it it's not but I feel

06:26like I should be positive Amanda's super excited but this has just flawed me this hay on the floor

06:36who has lived here animals we've never had an animal be a previous tenant I'm very positive about the

06:43upstairs in all honesty and all the renovations that we've done so far this is definitely the

06:49worst but I'm bloody minded really and stubborn and I won't be defeated so this house will not win I will

07:13not truth I know that's like a dog I call that my dog too yeah why is it poking out overcrowding but on the

07:26plus side I always get a little snack trapped in there oh it's good for like you know you make oh that's

07:31good yeah nice still reeling from seeing our worst wreck ever yesterday we're off to pick up Scott

07:39there he is oh there he is we found him who can hopefully put our fears to rest

07:45I'm going quick hello hi how are you wow lovely start how are you we're good how are you great so what are we going to start with first then well because I've got loads of work on in

08:01Sicily I'm not going to be able to be here all summer well so I'm only going to be able to pop

08:07out and see you every now and again and kind of keep my eyes on it from a distance but don't panic I've

08:13got as a great local builder what's his name his name's Stamatis Stamatis and he's going to be our

08:20mascot for the summer I'm not easy to replace no you are not so what your ideas with the house demolition

08:30bowl right through it Scott's taking us to Stamatis's office in the heart of Corfu town a UNESCO World

08:42Heritage Site where the Greeks Venetians Romans and even us Brits have left a mark here one time or

08:49another good morning yes we're hoping Stamatis who's been building on the island for the past 20

09:01years can help us leave our mark can you transform our stable into a home actually not and also we've

09:16got a problem you know the outside stairs but it's so weird having the stairs outside the traditional

09:24houses here they they're being protected by the archaeological department and we have to follow

09:30their regulations perhaps if we gave them some euros no chance me as a honey trap no we thought we

09:44could do white building blue shutters that'd be my dream in a different island yes Santorini you

09:50see mama mia mama mia I'm a little bit young but I remember them but we're not allowed to do this kind

09:57of colors you know for outside we have to leave it as it is internal we can do things okay so let's see

10:03some plants yeah to turn our wreck into a family holiday home for the first time we have to gut the

10:10entire house removing a dividing wall to create a big living dining room with the adjoining modern kitchen

10:18the patch of land in front of the house becomes a private Mediterranean garden with an outdoor kitchen

10:26and plunge pool as a traditional coffee at house the external staircase stays put but will reconfigure

10:34upstairs to create both master and children's bedrooms with stunning sea views we'll also turn

10:41the landing into a reading room and next door as ever Amanda has big plans for the Greek themed bathroom

10:48why do you want a round but I want it to look Greek I've got my mood board I'll show you my mood

10:54board okay blue and white Greek bathroom is there even a round bath in Corfu on the other we can make it

11:01out cement no it's gonna fall down finally I found someone who can say no to Amanda Holger it's lovely

11:11working with you with plans in place and a new builder on board Alan and I can take a breather and get

11:25inspired by island life so we've come to our local harbour in Cassiope to explore Corfu's beautiful coastline

11:35okay let's go through the map here be very careful in the water you see this or this shallow bit is a rock okay

11:48you're gonna stay away from that this is a rock around the harbour if you do decide to go here enter a noble this is like an assault court

11:57I thought it was meant to be a leisurely drive have a lovely day pray for me

14:11we've always sort of been inspired by the aesthetics of the country like you know like a tile or a bold

14:17print yeah but with Greece it's all a bit subtle isn't it yeah I just think everywhere is stone white

14:26yeah peach pink and that is the tradition yeah I feel like this house might have to be subtle the

14:34tradition is being Greek isn't it it's it's the mythology it's the it's the lifestyle it's the diet

14:41it's the thinking it's an attitude isn't it I think while we're here we need to embrace like

14:46everything we can culturally so learning a bit more about mythology eating healthily we're both

14:54animal lovers wouldn't it be nice to do something for animals well we're here like the girls yeah well

15:01oh my god yes in his footsteps type yeah I definitely think so yeah I think it'd be nice to give you know

15:09that I reckon that sea air has affected your brain and your mood Alan because you now seem quite

15:18uplifted I think it's because I nearly died on that boat I'm thought I'd give life a second go

15:23as well as saving the house you need to save my love life oh I do need to save

15:53unit I'm I'm single ready to mingle oh well I mean I want to greet God this is danger for me

15:59because you know I this is something I'm gonna love I don't know why but I just feel like you know

16:0750 is approaching I've done me bit by myself and I just want to share my life with someone so yeah

16:14but don't go mental because there was a stage where you're just asking anyone but I'm looking for

16:19Hercules I want Hercules to help us picture what our place could become Stamatis has invited us to see

17:00shape it really is yes it's two floors here and the kitchen next door you know but everything was

17:06falling down the roof was falling down like ours yes yes oh my gosh we just weren't filled with hope

17:15well I was because I can see potential do you know what we've got we've got staircase outside that's so

17:22we so yes oh it's just an odd thing to get used to isn't it we thought we want to remain true to the

17:29Greek tradition and if you want to bring back all that yeah there's only one builder and that was you

17:35that makes us feel better will I'll look like this please can it look like this we're gonna find out

17:40let's have a look inside yes lovingly restored by Stamatis Kevin and Sarah decided they wanted to

17:49preserve as many original features as possible what do you think I love the stone we need to bring

17:56up as much stone as possible it feels traditional yet fresh and clear and new yeah and it's lovely and

18:07cool so that's a really lovely thing that isn't it it's never hot in here it's the wall you know

18:12like a 60 centimeter thickness here is our bread oven oh I know what a clever idea everything's from

18:26Corfu though they came here and when I want to live here whereas either complete opposite when we saw our

18:34hovel sorry home but now I've seen this I realize it could be lovely this is the kitchen oh and yes

18:44rule the stone this is an amazing floor oh this is now we could do this that's amazing the flagstone

18:53floors and how simple it is inside yeah I think for the first time ever we're gonna have to keep it

18:59simple simple rustic yet wall three shake yes so I feel I don't I know when you feel hopeful I feel

19:08inspired this was here but you had to lift it didn't you yes we lift it up with a new grout new cement

19:15underneath I think we've struck gold with Stamatis but if it all goes wrong he could be a tribute act

19:40inspired to get to work we're back in cocky me but before we can renovate the place needs a huge clear out

19:47it's nice to have a different color jump I mean when my mom sees this she's gonna be like oh man

19:59yes CSI cocky me and with Scott's scooting back to Sicily shortly there's no time to waste

20:08there he is very clean and white it's not gonna last I can't believe you've got much in as well I

20:23these are like little moon boots I quite like them and one thing I want to know about this pipe up there

21:15get rid let's get rid on first inspection of the house you go oh my gosh there's not a lot to save

21:21but we are all about upcycling and trying to to to utilize what we've got I think we should keep

21:33these chairs because they're quite 60s and then maybe recover these but my favorite thing at the

21:41start of a renovation is turning the house into like a just a blank canvas and a box for me this

21:50is an eyesore even me evil eyes started twitching when it's all this poop like should we take it out

21:56oh do you not need a specialist poop remover go imagine if a turd just flew straight out there I've

22:14never seen anything like it have a pool pipe sort of go through the whole house because it sort of

22:20just dissected the whole room once we dismantled it I felt better I really did

22:27poo me poo me poo you oh no Amanda Amanda you've got a skiddy on the back

22:34that's a game changer

22:39with progress on the house at last Alan and I are off to help out with another passion project whilst

22:56we're here Durrell Street oh they've named it for us a bit meant they we're the same when it comes to

23:02animals inspired by Gerald Durrell's love of animals we want to volunteer at a local sanctuary it's the

23:10cats in Corfe there's loads of cats loads of dogs yeah but I can't go back with a dog I really can't

23:17because I got two rescues already and yeah it's enough it's enough because I got Rita who is deaf

23:25as a post oh yes Rita and then I took a gamble and got another rescue dog now I've had two female

23:32dogs before but we had them done so I've never had them you know due on in their cycle yeah and it's

23:39true what they say there was dogs running over from the park and doing their having their way with Rita

23:45and Rita was loving it oh my god Alan but then I thought the reason I rescued the two dogs from

23:52the animal sanctuary was so I'd stop unwanted pregnancies yeah so then I rang up the woman and

23:58apparently there is a morning after jab for your dog there is no yeah so I took Rita down to the vets

24:04I'm sitting in the waiting room and then the receptionist goes reach a car morning after jab and I

24:10was like I could think I could see people looking at me like judge you and I was like don't slut shame my

24:17dog oh it's really peaceful isn't it oh hello hello good morning nice to meet you nice to meet you

24:32for donkey rescue keen to give back to the island by volunteering our help across the summer we're

24:38meeting fellow Brit Julie glad you found it and her great counterparts to Mattis who runs Corfu donkey

24:45rescue a shelter for 27 donkeys and other animals from across the island we had a donkey family arrive

24:54not so long ago Quinn is pregnant do you know what she's having a donkey hope but I have a little

25:05baby called the baby boy called Wogan after Terry yes okay great oh imagine if they have a little baby

25:14they can call him Alamanda absolutely yeah your face is saying no this is Wogan this one with the

25:27nice dark brown hair and they're fluffy yeah yeah hello Wogan hello babe oh my god Alan it's so soft it's so

25:37gorgeous where did the donkeys come from and most of them are from like farming and within Corfu so

25:47have their lives been all right or have they been abused some of them are abuse cases yeah and when

25:54the owners passed away their relatives bring usually the donkeys to us yeah I feel like whilst we're here

26:05Alan we should try and do our bits yeah because that's what we love to do yes oh I'm up for that

26:11well it's a bit lethal isn't it really bringing two people that are known for rescuing animals to a

26:16place where animals need rescuing so gorgeous I'm on board I have delivered a lamb before I did my

26:27midwifery training yes so I'm on call I think they the owners can just go home and leave me and Amanda

26:33yes what else do you reckon Zia oh I want to find some doggies to know that this is on our doorstep and

26:57we can come and be part of it anytime it's amazing yeah I could call you Mandy I think it's gonna be a

27:04very good summer epic it's gonna be an epic summer it is can you smell my boiled eggs can you smell

27:13Amanda's well I am of that age my eggs are definitely poached

27:29I feel like I've had a loser already don't you throughout our gorgeous Greek summer
