00:00It turns out there's a group of high school students who are stepping up to do just that.
00:04I say this is truly something unique, like a little heart of gold in this school.
00:10And I'm about to help Noah install some window trim.
00:30Hey there, I'm Kevin O'Connor, and welcome back to This Old House here in western North Carolina,
00:53where we are following the rebuilding of five homes that were damaged by Hurricane Helene.
00:57Three of those houses are right here in Swannanoa.
01:01That was devastated by flooding when the Swannanoa River, just behind me, overflowed its banks.
01:07The water got up to the eave line on these homes.
01:10Well, remarkably, after six months of digging out, and with the help of thousands of volunteers across this region,
01:16some of our homeowners are just weeks away from moving in.
01:20Down the street at Maya's house, the countertops are in, and tile is starting to be installed.
01:24Here at Jim and Ali's, the tile is done, and they are starting to put down the wood floors.
01:28And across the street, I'm about to help Noah install some window trim.
01:33Hey, Noah. Good to see you again.
01:35Hey, Kevin.
01:35I love to see and hear about all the progress going on down here.
01:38Thanks. We're pretty pumped.
01:40Yeah, including drywall and windows in here, and I'm told, window trim today?
01:44Yeah, we'll do some window jams and case them out.
01:47All right. What's your plan of attack?
01:48I'll build the jam as a box, and then I'll build the casing as a box.
01:53Let me just pull this out right here.
01:56So top jams, side jams, these are going to run long.
01:59You've nailed them in place.
02:00The finish screws, actually.
02:02And how have you affixed your casing?
02:06We pocket screw the sides to the top and bottom.
02:10Right.
02:11And that holds everything square.
02:14Let's just set this back here.
02:16Okay, so I'm just taking some numbers for my jam extensions.
02:22I've got the bottom.
02:24So let's measure from the window opening from here to here.
02:35I've got 50 and 5 eighths on my side.
02:38Perfect. Me too.
02:39So we'll add a half inch to that to give our quarter inch on the bottom, quarter inch on the top.
02:46Roger that.
02:48And then for our top and bottom width, I'll add an inch and a half plus a half inch for my reveal.
02:57So the inch and a half is the three quarter width either side times two.
03:01Right, exactly.
03:02Half inch is a quarter inch reveal times two.
03:04That's it.
03:05Did you get the depth for our jams?
03:07No.
03:09What do we have from the window to the sheetrock?
03:12I've got three and three sixteenths.
03:14I've got three and five sixteenths.
03:18Okay.
03:19We'll go with the biggest number.
03:21Yeah.
03:21Just keep it simple.
03:22Three and five sixteenths it is.
03:24Okay.
03:25And what do we use?
03:26A pre-primed pine?
03:28Yeah.
03:28All right.
03:37Ninety-five and five eighths for our top and bottom.
03:40Pop a couple of nails in it just to hold it where we want it.
04:02So this is the trim head screw I'm going to use.
04:19You can see it's threaded up to about three quarters.
04:28So now we're ready for casing.
04:32I've got my pocket screwed jig here.
04:45Just pop this over to the next one.
05:02Let's see how we did.
05:06I'm going to pop this inch and a quarter nail in.
05:22Look at that.
05:24Nice.
05:25Okay.
05:29Set it home.
05:30I love it.
05:32Look at that, huh?
05:34It's a big, beautiful opening.
05:36It looks even better with the casing on it.
05:37It's great.
05:38Nice job, Noah.
05:43Here in Yancey County, about 35 miles northeast of Asheville,
05:47Helene, destroyed 1,400 homes and damaged another 2,300.
05:51That's a third of all the houses in this community,
05:53which means they've got a lot of rebuilding to do.
05:57And it turns out there's a group of high school students
05:59who are stepping up to do just that.
06:02The Michael Orr Construction Training Facility
06:05was founded nearly 20 years ago
06:07to give students at Mountain Heritage High School
06:10practical experience in the building trades.
06:13Carpentry instructor Jeremy Dots runs the program.
06:17Most of the kids start out as a sophomore.
06:19They start out by taking construction core,
06:21which is the beginning course.
06:22They're going to learn all about basic safety,
06:24hand tools, power tools.
06:25Then they would move into carpentry one as a junior.
06:28After that, in their senior year,
06:30they sign up for a carpentry two honors course.
06:34While tackling more advanced building projects,
06:37students in the honors course
06:38can also earn college credits.
06:41They receive up to nine credit hours
06:43for three of the courses that they take with me.
06:46And those can transfer to any college in North Carolina.
06:49So if they want to go and become an estimator
06:52or a project manager,
06:53those classes will transfer to those colleges
06:56and they will already have received credit.
06:58All right, Manuel, take yours up.
07:00Andrew, hold.
07:01Hold.
07:02The way he teaches it, it's very hands-on.
07:04You go and you do the book work portion of it.
07:07He kind of teaches you the vocabulary that you need to learn
07:09and then you come outside, he lays it out,
07:11you build it, you put it together.
07:12If you mess up, you take it apart, you do it again.
07:16Tell me about what happened, you know,
07:18in this county during Helene.
07:20Back in September when Hurricane Helene hit,
07:24it just absolutely devastated Yancey County.
07:27Yancey County was probably the epicenter of the storm.
07:30I knew right away that the program had an opportunity
07:33to use what we have here to help rebuild.
07:38Part of the effort includes building what they call
07:41tiny homes for the community.
07:43One of our tiny homes is 620 square feet
07:46and that's being donated to a lady who lost everything
07:49in the other home, which is 800 square feet,
07:52and it will be for low-income housing in a neighboring county.
07:57The materials used to build these homes have been supplied
08:00by a local nonprofit called Rebuilding Hollers.
08:04Floor systems, wall systems, and roof systems
08:06are all built right here, and then we put everything together,
08:09make sure it all fits, fold the roof system flat,
08:12and get it ready for shipping.
08:14So here's our living room over here.
08:17It's two by six studs.
08:19Then we learned how to frame this window.
08:21We got your king stud there and then your trimmers,
08:23and then you got your cripples down there
08:25with your header and your seal plate.
08:28Trimmers, the first I've heard of that.
08:29We call them jacks up by us, jack studs.
08:31Yes, sir, yeah, so we just learned how to frame a window.
08:34So this isn't just a curriculum project.
08:37These are two code ready for people to move into.
08:41You got it.
08:41We have to follow all the same building codes
08:43that any builder does.
08:44This is your master bedroom, bed on that back wall,
08:47and then here's your bathroom.
08:49You got the sink and stuff in there.
08:50And then back here is a closet,
08:52which also has a washer and dryer in it,
08:54stack of a washer and dryer with some storage back there.
08:56Laundry room, right.
08:57Everything in here.
08:59Not too bad.
08:59I mean, this is a tasty little tiny house.
09:02Yeah, it's pretty nice.
09:03Our community as a whole, we need carpenters.
09:06We especially need them now after the storm.
09:09So they are going to have a skill set
09:11that is probably higher than some people
09:13that are already currently working
09:14at some of these jobs in construction.
09:16We're very proud of what we do here.
09:20How much did you have a hand
09:21in building what's behind me here?
09:22I did the whole entire second story with my friend.
09:25Had you ever done anything like that, to that scale?
09:27No, sir.
09:28Helping people else.
09:30What better way to do it than when you can see it
09:32right there how you help somebody?
09:35It's definitely a great feeling, you know,
09:37knowing that what you're learning in school
09:39is being able to contribute to the real world
09:41and knowing that someone lost their home
09:44and being able to supply them with a home.
09:46It's really a great feeling.
09:48How does it feel to actually pull some of this stuff off?
09:50It's amazing, man.
09:51I mean, you can't get any better than this.
09:53You don't see this very many places,
09:54especially in high school.
09:55I say this is truly something unique,
09:58like a little herd of gold in this school.
10:01Something that's special.
10:03At least special to me, I know.
10:05Yeah.
10:07Although there's much work to be done,
10:09the recipient of this tiny home
10:10is visiting the school next week
10:12to meet with the students.
10:14And she wants to meet each and every one of you.
10:17I want you guys to be here for that moment
10:18because it's going to be very special for you.
10:20It'll be one you'll never forget, okay?
10:23You built her that house, all right?
10:25All right, guys.
10:27All right, y'all did amazing.
10:28Amazing today.
10:29Good job.
10:42When Helene hit these mountains,
10:43it brought with it 40 to 50 mile an hour wind gusts.
10:46You can imagine the damage that caused.
10:49Trees were down,
10:49but it also brought down our power wire.
10:53Now, this ran from the utility pole
10:55overhead into the house.
10:57And today, we're going to start resolving this issue
10:59with the help of our electrician.
11:01Hey, Mario.
11:02Nice to see you.
11:03Hey, Kevin.
11:03Good to see you.
11:04So, oh, you've already got this underway.
11:06We've got a bit of a mess here,
11:07but you are cleaning it up for us.
11:10What are you putting in?
11:11We're getting a new 200 amp overhead service.
11:14Yeah.
11:15And we're coming down here into our new meter box.
11:17Beautiful.
11:19This is what they used to have.
11:20So, this is what got damaged in the storm?
11:23Correct.
11:24And now, we are putting in a new meter box.
11:26So, the obvious question I've got is,
11:28why are we going from a little toaster like this
11:30to a big, giant thing like that?
11:31That's an excellent question.
11:33So, code has changed.
11:35Back when there would be any issue at the house,
11:38a first responder would have to come out here
11:39and actually pull this meter.
11:41Really?
11:42And so, what code...
11:43Firemen would literally have to take this out
11:45to shut the power off?
11:46Correct.
11:47And so, what code is wanting to do now
11:49is give them,
11:50they have a dangerous job as it is,
11:52a shut-off switch.
11:54And so, all new meters are now labeled
11:56with emergency disconnect.
11:57They'll be able to come up here to the house
11:59and shut the house off.
12:00Know that it's all fine.
12:01Okay.
12:03So, you've got the upright in,
12:04you've got the box attached to the wall,
12:06you're ready to start working on conductors?
12:07Yeah, we're landing our service lateral conductors.
12:10If you don't mind holding that right there.
12:13This is obviously de-energized.
12:15And what is that that you're putting on there?
12:17This is antioxidant compound.
12:19Being that we're using aluminum conductors,
12:21this is a way to keep it from loosening up over time.
12:27And what we're going to do is
12:28we're going to just snug these down a little bit
12:30and we'll do the final tightening
12:32to specs with a torque wrench.
12:34Nice.
12:35Okay.
12:36That one's in there.
12:40So, what are your three conductors?
12:42So, we have, coming from the power company,
12:44we have two hots and a neutral.
12:48And each hot is feeding all your 120-volt loads in your house,
12:54like your outlets, your refrigerator, your microwave.
12:57The two main ones are where you get your 220.
12:59So, that's your oven, that's your range,
13:02that's your heat pump, any big load.
13:03So, that's where you get that from.
13:09Nice.
13:10Okay.
13:10Okay.
13:12So, we've completed the meter portion of our enclosure.
13:16And so, yeah, if you want to hand me that meter there.
13:19Eventually, that plugs into this?
13:21Correct.
13:21So, this is the power coming down from the power company
13:24and this is its hard brake.
13:26So, when this goes in,
13:27it makes the connection between the utility and the home.
13:32And this is what we'll measure.
13:34Yeah.
13:35So, connection and measurement from this.
13:37Correct.
13:37That'll go in later.
13:38So, by jumping it down to this side,
13:41this is what gets us into the house?
13:42Correct.
13:42And so, what we have is we have our wiring
13:45coming from our sub panel in the house,
13:47but the main disconnect is here.
13:49Yeah.
13:49And so, what these new enclosures allow you to have
13:52is a space for circuit breakers
13:53to be on the outside of the home.
13:55So, what we're going to do
13:57is we're going to terminate these wires,
14:00which are then the completion of this connection
14:03that will go into the house.
14:04So, wait.
14:05So, when you say the breakers are here,
14:06if this is the shutoff,
14:08what are the breakers for?
14:09They can be for hot tubs,
14:11electric vehicle chargers,
14:14heating and air conditioning equipment,
14:15or you could put landscape lighting.
14:18So, without them, typically,
14:20you'd be having to put those connections
14:23inside the house
14:24and then pull them back out.
14:25Correct.
14:25You can skip that step
14:26and just come right out of this.
14:28Clever.
14:28Enter downstream of the meter,
14:29so shut off and metering is all done.
14:31Correct.
14:32Oh, very nice.
14:32All right.
14:33So, now we're ready to connect?
14:34We're going to be ready to connect these.
14:35And if you notice,
14:36we have an extra wire now.
14:38So, because this is our main,
14:41we now have to ground our service.
14:43And so, going into the house,
14:45we're going to have a ground wire
14:47that is also going to tie into our ground rods.
14:50There we go.
15:00Good job.
15:03Okay.
15:04So, we've adjusted our torque wrench
15:06to 250 inch pounds,
15:08and now we're going to tighten these down.
15:11Connections, especially electrical,
15:13are all about having the right torque
15:16and connectivity.
15:17So, if it's under-connected,
15:19the wire will wear out over time and arc.
15:22If it's over-connected,
15:24you damage the strands,
15:26and that can lead to a fire.
15:30There it slips.
15:31You hear that?
15:32That was it.
15:32When it slips, you're there.
15:33Yep.
15:39Now, we're going to run our ground wire
15:40over to the ground rods.
15:42And so, that's any errant electricity
15:44goes to ground as opposed to
15:46through the house or through us.
15:47Correct.
15:52If you want to get going on another one,
15:54I'll make this connection.
16:02So, I've seen one of these rods put in,
16:05but never two.
16:06Why did you use two?
16:07So, what we are doing is
16:08we're giving a clean path
16:09for any errant current to go to ground.
16:12And Coe tells us that two ground rods
16:14gets us to where we need to be.
16:16Two is better than one.
16:17Two is better than one.
16:17Okay.
16:18So, bury that.
16:19That looks like it's all buttoned up right in there.
16:21You good to go inside?
16:22We done out here?
16:23We're done out here.
16:24Awesome.
16:24Pleasure working with you.
16:26Pleasure working with you.
16:27All right.
16:27I won't slow you down anymore.
16:28I'll let you get to it.
16:29Appreciate it.
16:30Thanks, Maria.
16:37Hey, Tommy.
16:38Thanks so much.
16:39Oh, well, my pleasure.
16:40This is a great antique chest
16:42that you're going to turn into a vanity.
16:44I love it.
16:45Yeah.
16:45The bathroom is kind of a modern room,
16:47and I thought having a little antique in there
16:49would be a nice touch.
16:51Nice touch, yeah.
16:52So, we're going to turn this into a vanity,
16:54and it's going to take a little bit of work
16:56because we have a sink that sits in the middle.
16:58Right.
16:59So, obviously, we won't be able to use this drawer
17:01because we won't be able to pull it out
17:04because of the sink and the plumbing.
17:06So, we're going to take this one right out of the way.
17:08Maybe we'll just cut this down and just use the front.
17:11Right.
17:12That's what I was thinking.
17:13Just use the front of it.
17:15Now, this one, this is a beautiful drawer.
17:17We're going to have to cut this drawer
17:19so you can utilize some of it.
17:21We have to also make room for the plumbing
17:23that's got to go down.
17:24Mm-hmm.
17:24All right.
17:25So, let's get this out of the way right now temporarily.
17:31Lay it right down right on the drop cloth.
17:35Good.
17:35Now, to mark the wall for everything,
17:39we had to make a template.
17:40Mm-hmm.
17:41It shows where the plumbing lines have to be drilled,
17:44and I marked the center locations for the pipes
17:48because the holes were off just a little bit.
17:50That's why you always do a template.
17:52So, to line this up, we put it down face first.
17:57Mm-hmm.
17:57Okay?
17:58Here's my center line,
18:00and you're going to make it even on that end there.
18:03Right now, we're just going to tape it down
18:05so it doesn't move.
18:08That's all.
18:09And now, when I cross these marks across,
18:12it gives me a bullseye in the center of the hole
18:16where we can place our drill to drill the hole.
18:20I wouldn't leave the drill running solid
18:23until you get a good bite.
18:24So, just pull the trigger and pump it.
18:26Keep pumping it until you get down through.
18:30Oh, like that?
18:31Yeah, there's a grab.
18:32Now you've got to be ready for it.
18:33Now I'm not doing it.
18:35All right.
18:36Take your weight off of it.
18:37All right.
18:37Hold the drill firm.
18:38There you go.
18:39Hold it.
18:46All right.
18:46Perfect.
18:48All right.
18:49Now we'll take that off
18:50and put the smaller drill on.
18:52Nice and easy now.
18:59Don't push down hard.
19:06So now we're going to take the cabinet
19:07and stand it up
19:08so we can cut out some of the center section here.
19:11Just put a metal cutting blade in there
19:13and you're all set.
19:14All right.
19:21So this stretcher will come right out.
19:24There it is.
19:25So now what we're going to do
19:25is we're going to leave the three-quarter inch pieces
19:28around the perimeter
19:28and we're going to cut the center
19:30of this whole section right out.
19:32Okay.
19:37See if we can get this out.
19:39Yeah, pick it up.
19:41All right.
19:42Same thing over here.
19:43We'll pick it up
19:43and that will give us plenty of room
19:46for the drain lines
19:48and the water lines of the sink.
19:50All right.
19:50So I'm going to push this drawer in.
19:51This is the one we want to modify
19:53and show you exactly what we have to do.
19:55I'm not going to push it in all the way.
19:58Now, first thing I look at
19:59is the center mark for the cabinet
20:02because that's going to be the center of the sink
20:05and our drain line's got to run right down
20:08through the cabinet.
20:09So here's the center of our cabinet
20:12and if we look,
20:14I'll step back a little bit,
20:15you can look at the back of the drawer
20:18and the holes that are on the wall back there.
20:20See them?
20:21There's our location.
20:22So there's a water line
20:23that's going to have a shut-up on it,
20:25a drain line that's going to have a trap under it,
20:28and another water line right here.
20:30Okay.
20:31We'll draw a line there.
20:32I'll slide this over here
20:36and I'm going to eyeball the edge of that hole right there
20:39for the water.
20:41Put a mark for there
20:42and come off the back out to the side.
20:47And all right,
20:47now we're ready to modify the drawer.
20:49They should be both the same.
21:10And they are.
21:11They're still going to have a lot of storage on each side,
21:33which is great.
21:33Slide it in,
21:37back down the track.
21:40Perfect.
21:40Look at that.
21:41This drawer you're going to have to modify next, right?
21:43Right.
21:45But it's going to be pretty simple.
21:47Basically what you've got to do
21:48is you get all this out of the way,
21:50the plumber won't have any problem installing anything.
21:53Oh, that's awesome.
21:54Thank you so much for your help.
21:55I'm pretty sure I can manage that.
21:57I'll send you a picture when I'm done.
21:58I'd love to see it.
21:59I can't wait.
21:59I know you're going to do a great job.
22:01It's going to be a beautiful piece.
22:07Hey, Tommy.
22:08Hey, Kevin.
22:08Great progress coming from Swannanoa.
22:10And then up in North Asheville,
22:12our electrician brought power to the house,
22:14and that's going to help them keep that moving along.
22:16Making great progress there.
22:17I'm making great progress here.
22:18I mean, the outside is almost done,
22:21but a lot of the trim work still got to go, too.
22:23Yeah.
22:23There's a lot going on.
22:24Yeah, but good progress.
22:25Absolutely.
22:26Good news.
22:27All right, one more to come.
22:28So until next time, I'm Kevin O'Connor.
22:29And I'm Tom Soba.
22:30For this old house here in Western North Carolina.
22:33Next time on This Old House.
22:38I'll show you how to make this fiberglass door
22:41to look like wood with just a stain.
22:44Thank you so much, Mora.
22:46You're welcome.
22:47This is the master plan of the entire property.
22:49Right now, we're focusing on the front.
22:51We're going to do a terrace retaining wall.
22:55That's pretty good, right?
22:56Yeah.
22:56Yeah.
22:58And in Swannanoa, we are hanging solid-core interior doors.
