00:00:00In life, they toss curve balls at you, you know what I mean?
00:00:14And you just gotta shrug it off and just keep on going.
00:00:18There's been a lot of speculation about my plan, and here they are.
00:00:21I will fight again.
00:00:23How am I going to really be private?
00:00:25If I go to a club, it's in the paper. If I buy cars, it's in the paper.
00:00:30If I kiss my girlfriend, it's in the paper.
00:00:33So really, how am I going to be private?
00:00:35The fans, they're human beings. Sometimes they're fickle.
00:00:38They don't like you, they like you.
00:00:39You gotta keep striving, you know what I mean?
00:00:41I have things that I want to accomplish in my life as a person,
00:00:44but I just, as far as my career, I want to do well.
00:00:48I just have the desire to fight.
00:00:51Some people have the desire to fight, but don't have the desire to train.
00:00:56You do come hand in hand.
00:00:58You can't do one without the other.
00:01:01I think that I'm an ace in the hole when it comes to the heavyweight division
00:01:04because I believe I'm the best fighter.
00:01:06This is a promotion of Don King Productions.
00:01:35in association with the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino
00:01:41and Corona Beer.
00:01:46Pay-per-view distributed by SET Pay-per-view.
00:01:52Welcome to the MGM Grand Garden.
00:01:55During the short history of this multi-purpose arena,
00:01:58many of boxing's current luminaries have shined in this ring
00:02:01at the world's largest hotel and casino.
00:02:04Tonight, the atmosphere in this building is charged with enough electricity
00:02:08to light up the fabled Las Vegas Strip.
00:02:11The reason for the excitement, of course,
00:02:13is the long-awaited, much-anticipated return of Mike Tyson.
00:02:17He burst upon the professional boxing landscape in 1985
00:02:20and left a path of destruction through the heavyweight division.
00:02:24His return to the boxing ring promises to invigorate a sport
00:02:27that desperately needs star power to attract mass fan attention.
00:02:31And it appears Tyson has already begun to fulfill that void
00:02:35created three years ago when he went to prison.
00:02:38The MGM Grand Garden's usual capacity for boxing is 15,222.
00:02:43But an additional 1,514 seats were added here tonight
00:02:47to accommodate the demand to see the former champion's return in person.
00:02:51Over 1 billion are expected to view Mike Tyson's comeback on television
00:02:56throughout the world.
00:03:01Good evening, everyone.
00:03:02I'm Jim Hill, your host for this historic, much-anticipated night.
00:03:06In a year that marked the return of Michael Jordan to the basketball court
00:03:09and Monica Sellers to tennis,
00:03:11the return of Mike Tyson to the boxing ring
00:03:13has overshadowed those compelling stories,
00:03:15making the leap from the sports page to the front page.
00:03:18For years, Tyson has been forced to live his life in the tabloids
00:03:22and under the glare of the media's bright lights.
00:03:25Now, with more attention focused on him than ever before,
00:03:28Iron Mike probably faces new challenges.
00:03:31Can he once again rise to the top of the heavyweight ranks?
00:03:34Can he win back the fans while seeking his title?
00:03:37Is the public ready to accept him after three years in prison
00:03:39for a crime which he still maintains he did not commit?
00:03:43The epic saga of Mike Tyson continues.
00:03:46The next chapter begins.
00:03:47Let's go down to ringside now.
00:03:49Here's Steve Albert.
00:03:49Steve.
00:03:50Thank you, Jim.
00:03:51The second coming of Mike Tyson comes at an opportune time
00:03:54given the current state of the heavyweight division.
00:03:56It's been four years since his last fight,
00:03:58and boxing fans are still using Tyson as the yardstick
00:04:01by which all other heavyweights are measured.
00:04:03Tyson KO'd his first 19 opponents en route to becoming
00:04:06the youngest heavyweight champion in history
00:04:08when he stopped Trevor Burbank in 1986 at the age of 20.
00:04:12Less than a year later,
00:04:13he became the undisputed heavyweight champ of the world,
00:04:16defending the unified title six times.
00:04:18It would take arguably the biggest upset in sports history
00:04:21to end his reign when a 42-1 underdog named James Buster Douglas
00:04:25would turn the boxing world upside down,
00:04:28only to lose the undisputed title to Evander Holyfield a few months later.
00:04:33After four more fights, all victories,
00:04:35Tyson signed to meet Holyfield in what could have been
00:04:37one of the biggest promotions in boxing history.
00:04:39But shortly before the fight, Tyson pulled out with a rib injury.
00:04:43Before the rescheduled fight could take place,
00:04:46Tyson was convicted of rape and went to prison for three years.
00:04:49His last fight was June 28, 1991,
00:04:52a 12-round decision over Donovan Razor Ruddock.
00:04:55Through it all, the Tyson aura continued to grow.
00:04:58He became larger than life,
00:04:59a life highly publicized in and out of the ring,
00:05:02to the point where he is now one of the most recognizable athletes in the world.
00:05:06And even though his first opponent on the road back is unproven,
00:05:10untested, and lightly regarded,
00:05:11there exists an overwhelming curiosity and fascination with Tyson's return.
00:05:16This is an event that has captured the attention of
00:05:18not only the most diehard boxing fan,
00:05:21but also the casual observer and even the non-boxing fan.
00:05:24It is a story almost four years of the making,
00:05:27and it comes to a dramatic climax tonight.
00:05:30With that, let me bring on my partners at ringside.
00:05:32First, the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco.
00:05:34And Ferdy, what about the similarities and differences between Tyson's return
00:05:37and other notable champions?
00:05:39Well, the first similarity you see around you,
00:05:41this enormous public interest from every corner of the earth they're calling in,
00:05:46and from every corner of the United States,
00:05:47they're tuning in to watch this fight.
00:05:49That's the same thing that happened to us with Ali.
00:05:51The difference was quite a bit.
00:05:53The last similarity, by the way, that I can think of
00:05:55is they were both fighting white Irish heavyweights,
00:05:58but different white Irish heavyweights,
00:06:00because we had to take on Jerry Quarry,
00:06:03and that gentleman was always very tough and high-ranked.
00:06:06As far as McNeely is a very big question mark,
00:06:08which is going to be answered here in a few minutes.
00:06:10As far as the differences, they're very big.
00:06:13Ali came in as a hero, a national hero, beloved.
00:06:16Tyson is a discarded hero, a discredited hero,
00:06:19one who has to win back his public.
00:06:22Ali, all during his retirement,
00:06:24went into the gym and kept in shape and kept in training,
00:06:26so when he had to come back, he didn't have that much to do.
00:06:29But Tyson has had no boxing,
00:06:31has had no kind of boxing attention and training in jail,
00:06:35so he had to come back from a long way back,
00:06:38and he's had to do it in a short time.
00:06:40The similarities are very thin,
00:06:42and the differences are big,
00:06:44and the only thing that we can look for, Mr. Tyson,
00:06:46is a meandering road down,
00:06:48at the end of which is ring greatness,
00:06:50if he can pass all the tests.
00:06:52Ali passed him, he is a ring great.
00:06:53Now it's up to Tyson to go down that trail.
00:06:56All right, Ferdy, also working with us tonight is Bobby Chez,
00:06:59and Bobby, is four months of training okay?
00:07:02Is that enough after being out for four years?
00:07:05Steve, Mike Tyson's been a professional fighter for many years.
00:07:07He knows what it takes for his body to get in shape
00:07:09after a long layoff as well as a short layoff,
00:07:11and after all, those four years were at rest,
00:07:13a forced rest, if you will.
00:07:14He wasn't abusing his body,
00:07:15and he's in his late 20s, relatively close to his prime,
00:07:18not 37, but 38 years old.
00:07:20And lastly, he's fighting Peter McNeely.
00:07:22He's not fighting Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, or Riddick Bowe.
00:07:24Fighters that would push him to his physical and mental limits.
00:07:27He's fighting a relative unknown
00:07:28that doesn't seem to have the capabilities to do that much to him.
00:07:31He's fighting a relative unknown
00:07:33that doesn't seem to have the capabilities to do that much to him.
00:07:36I'm sure four months was ample for what he has to face tonight.
00:07:39All right, the weigh-in for Tyson versus McNeely
00:07:42took place this past Thursday here at the MGM Grand.
00:07:44Thousands turned out,
00:07:45aside from the media crunch here in this arena.
00:07:48Let's take a look.
00:07:49And Mike Tyson displaying the results of some very rigorous training
00:07:52since his release from prison.
00:07:54This is the most muscular he has looked in his career.
00:07:57He is reported to have weighed about 240
00:07:58when he left the Indiana Penitentiary,
00:08:00although observers thought he looked thin and uncharacteristically small.
00:08:04His intent was to get to a fighting weight of 224, 225.
00:08:07He was 216 for his last fight in 91.
00:08:10Tyson here tipped the scales at 220,
00:08:13drawing screams from the crowd.
00:08:14Meanwhile, Peter McNeely blowing kisses to the crowd,
00:08:17but still enjoying his newfound celebrity status,
00:08:20relishing the moment, playing to the audience.
00:08:23And he weighed in at 224.
00:08:24Yes, a circus-like atmosphere at the Tyson-McNeely weigh-in on Thursday.
00:08:30Some background on the 26-year-old McNeely.
00:08:32He is college educated.
00:08:33His mother is a college professor.
00:08:35He's a third-generation fighter.
00:08:37His father once fought for the heavyweight championship.
00:08:39And his grandfather, a 1928 Olympian.
00:08:42Tonight, McNeely will receive a reported $540,000,
00:08:45which is $539,500 more than he got for his last fight.
00:08:50He still lives at home and sleeps in the same room with his younger brother, Snubby.
00:08:54He's had a poster hanging over his bed for the past five years,
00:08:58and it's a picture of Mike Tyson.
00:09:00Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Tyson is fighting for the first time in exactly four years and 52 days.
00:09:05The so-called new Mike Tyson appears to be more reflective, but has his moody moments.
00:09:10Despite the extensive media coverage and massive hype for this non-title fight,
00:09:15Mike Tyson, the man for whom this coming-out party is being thrown,
00:09:18simply says,
00:09:19I'm just looking forward to doing my thing.
00:09:22Outwardly, he shows little emotion,
00:09:24but he has left no doubt that he wants to fight.
00:09:27So we are here at the amazing MGM Grand Hotel, Casino, and Theme Park in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:09:33Right now, let's go to the reporter on our broadcast team, Jim Gray,
00:09:37for a look at the celebrity and media attention for Tyson's return.
00:09:40Jim?
00:09:41All right. Thank you very much, Steve.
00:09:43Well, the public really didn't have the chance to anticipate and plan for the return of Michael Jordan,
00:09:48the surprise return in March to the NBA,
00:09:50but such has not been the case for Mike Tyson.
00:09:53Since leaving prison the day after Jordan returned to the court in Chicago,
00:09:57everybody has been anticipating this night here,
00:09:59with media appearances on several media outlets throughout the country
00:10:04and across the world with a worldwide appearance on Larry King Live.
00:10:07This has led to more than 1,100 credentials being issued for tonight.
00:10:12In fact, this fight is going to be viewed live in over 90 countries,
00:10:16including China, Russia, India, and Australia.
00:10:19Now, as for Peter McNeely,
00:10:21well, nobody knew who Peter McNeely was just a couple of months ago.
00:10:25Now he's becoming a household name for all of the wrong reasons,
00:10:28much like Randall Tex Cobb and Chuck Wepner.
00:10:31However, probably should be stated that both Wepner and Cobb
00:10:34had better fighting credentials and better skills.
00:10:37Well, he's taken a lot of fun, poked Adam Peter McNeely,
00:10:39and he's handled it very well.
00:10:41He had an appearance on the Jay Leno show, the Tonight Show,
00:10:43and if he's going to be remembered at all,
00:10:45it's probably going to be as the answer to a trivia question
00:10:48as to who was Tyson's first opponent.
00:10:50But aside from all of this about the opponent and Peter McNeely,
00:10:54tonight there is an aura and an excitement here
00:10:56that really hasn't been seen in boxing for some time.
00:10:59All you have to do is look at the list of celebrities
00:11:01who are scheduled to appear tonight.
00:11:03Jim Carrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Madonna, Charles Barkley,
00:11:06you name it, most of them are going to be here.
00:11:08So this is an event.
00:11:10Maybe it is an event to be seen and not to see.
00:11:14That remains to be seen.
00:11:15Steve?
00:11:16Thank you, Jim.
00:11:17We'll have more on tonight's main event from ringside
00:11:20later in the broadcast.
00:11:21But for now, let's throw it back up to Jim Hill.
00:11:23Jim?
00:11:24All right, Steve, thank you very much.
00:11:25Joining us tonight on our telecast
00:11:27is a man who knows a thing or two or three about comebacks.
00:11:30Of course, we're talking about Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:11:32and you look great.
00:11:32It is great to have you with us tonight.
00:11:34Well, thank you, Jim.
00:11:34In fact, I wrote the book on comebacks,
00:11:36so I don't think about comebacks.
00:11:37You certainly did.
00:11:38You know, the city of Las Vegas
00:11:39really hasn't had this much excitement in it
00:11:41about an athletic event in a long time.
00:11:43Well, the position of the headway division,
00:11:45let alone the boxing division,
00:11:47it needs a Mike Tyson.
00:11:48It needs a superstar.
00:11:49Mike Tyson has an aura, a presence, a persona
00:11:52that can give boxing a shot of adrenaline in the arm.
00:11:55Now, when you talk about Tyson's return,
00:11:57naturally, the term ring rust comes to mind.
00:11:59Should he be more concerned about ring rust,
00:12:01or is there something else that you think
00:12:02would be in his mind?
00:12:03Well, Jim, we use the term ring rust
00:12:05to describe a fighter's skill
00:12:07after he's had a long layoff.
00:12:08The first thing that goes is at time and rhythm.
00:12:12Fighters that normally throws a series of punches
00:12:13or combinations tend to look for one big punch,
00:12:16which I expect from Mike Tyson.
00:12:18The second thing that tends to lead that fighter
00:12:20is the ability to sip a punch,
00:12:23bob and weave,
00:12:24the use of the upper body movement.
00:12:26Normally, fighters who are quite elusive
00:12:28tend to be stationary targets,
00:12:30but with the opposition,
00:12:31the caliber opposition,
00:12:32that Mike Tyson is facing tonight,
00:12:34I don't see these things being revealed
00:12:36because Mike Tyson just needs a big punch.
00:12:38Well, we certainly look forward to your analyst work tonight,
00:12:43and, you know, your analyst work here
00:12:44is going to be just absolutely amazing,
00:12:45and we're going to have a lot of fun,
00:12:46that is for sure.
00:12:47And while all the attention tonight
00:12:48is fixed on Mike Tyson's return,
00:12:50there are three world championship fights
00:12:52also featured here at the MGM Grand Garden.
00:12:56Here is tonight's bout order.
00:12:58The card begins with a battle of undefeated.
00:13:01WBC lightweight champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:13:03defends his title against Lamar Murphy.
00:13:05Then, newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon
00:13:09makes his first title defense against Joe Hipp.
00:13:12As a bonus to our East Coast viewers,
00:13:14our third bout tonight is our main event.
00:13:17Mike Tyson begins his comeback
00:13:18against Peter McNeely in a scheduled 10-rounder.
00:13:21And we conclude our coverage
00:13:22with a battle of knockout artists.
00:13:24Two-time WBC middleweight champion
00:13:27Julian Jackson versus Quincy Taylor
00:13:29in what on paper could be
00:13:31the best boxing matchup of the evening.
00:13:33Mexican sensation Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:13:36is about to risk his WBC lightweight title
00:13:39and his undefeated record against Lamar Murphy
00:13:41in our first bout of the evening.
00:13:43Gonzalez hopes to replace Julio Cesar Chavez
00:13:45in the hearts and minds of Mexico's boxing fans.
00:13:48If this young champion wants to supplant a living legend,
00:13:51he must win big confrontations like tonight's fight.
00:13:54For Gonzalez, the path to greatness
00:13:56goes through an undefeated challenger.
00:13:58For Murphy, the door to a world title
00:14:00is guarded by one of boxing's best young champions.
00:14:03The WBC lightweight championship is next.
00:14:06Let's go back down to ringside once again.
00:14:08Here's Steve Albert. Steve.
00:14:09Thanks again, Jim.
00:14:10The 135-pounder set to lead things off
00:14:12as WBC lightweight champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:14:15meets Lamar Murphy in a battle of undefeated.
00:14:18Gonzalez, who has become the toast of Mexico,
00:14:20won the title at age 21
00:14:21and in four years since has turned back all comers,
00:14:25defending his crown nine times
00:14:26while upping his record to an impressive 37-0.
00:14:29The confident Gonzalez claims
00:14:31that he is the best fighter in Mexico
00:14:32and it's time for the great Julio Cesar Chavez
00:14:35to move over and make way for a new hero.
00:14:38He has set his sights on Chavez
00:14:39but says that Chavez wants no part of him.
00:14:42He also looks to a future showdown
00:14:44with the celebrated Oscar De La Hoya,
00:14:46the WBO lightweight champion.
00:14:48This is a talented division.
00:14:49Aside from Gonzalez and De La Hoya,
00:14:51the other champions are Rafael Ruelas,
00:14:53who rules the IVF,
00:14:54and rushes Gussie Nazarov, the WBA title holder.
00:14:57Gonzalez, who's had difficulty making this weight,
00:15:00goes for his 10th title defense
00:15:01against unheralded Lamar Murphy
00:15:03in his first attempt at a world championship.
00:15:05As we bring back the fight, Dr. Ferdi Pacheco,
00:15:08and Ferdi, should Gonzalez be considered
00:15:09among boxing's elite?
00:15:11Certainly.
00:15:11Certainly so.
00:15:12undefeated, plowing his way through anybody
00:15:15they put in front of him.
00:15:16This guy looks unstoppable.
00:15:17He looks like he could go
00:15:19until they put somebody in front of him
00:15:21that's as good as he is,
00:15:22and that's Oscar De La Hoya.
00:15:23That matchup would be a jewel
00:15:25whenever it happens, any year.
00:15:27Yeah, but is he the next Chavez?
00:15:30He says he's Chavez right now.
00:15:31He says, I'm ready to take on Chavez right now
00:15:33and finish that legend and start my own.
00:15:36Is he another one?
00:15:36Yes.
00:15:37But in the future,
00:15:38he's got to keep on fighting.
00:15:39He's got to keep on being undefeated.
00:15:41After all, Chavez has almost reached 100 fights.
00:15:44That's quite a career.
00:15:45How about a quick prediction?
00:15:47I think it's a matter of class.
00:15:49The champion, Gonzalez,
00:15:50is just too much for Murphy.
00:15:51All right, if we turn back to Bobby Ches,
00:15:53Bobby, experience plays such a major role
00:15:55at the championship level,
00:15:56and you would know.
00:15:57Well, certainly, Steve.
00:15:58Experience is something you can't be taught.
00:16:00You can't buy it.
00:16:01You have to go out and earn it
00:16:01and do it to get it.
00:16:03And for any fighter, it's an invaluable asset.
00:16:04It makes the difference sometimes
00:16:05in a close fight between winning or losing.
00:16:07And what type of threat
00:16:09does the undefeated Murphy pose for Gonzalez?
00:16:11Well, Murphy's undefeated.
00:16:13Craves a world title.
00:16:14That in and of itself is a threat.
00:16:15He's hungry.
00:16:16He wants a championship,
00:16:17so he wants Gonzalez.
00:16:18He's got great moves.
00:16:19He's got good reflexes.
00:16:20He's hard to hit.
00:16:21And if he's on his game,
00:16:22could pose trouble for anybody,
00:16:23including Gonzalez.
00:16:24And what do you think is going to happen?
00:16:25I think Gonzalez is going to wear him down.
00:16:27I think the pressure is going to be
00:16:27a bit much for him.
00:16:28The aura of the moment
00:16:29in the championship fight,
00:16:30the undefeated champion
00:16:31is a good, strong finisher,
00:16:32especially in the late rounds.
00:16:33I think it goes a few rounds,
00:16:35but I pick the champion.
00:16:35All right, Bobby,
00:16:37let's get a look at the challenger
00:16:38in the ring,
00:16:39and that, of course,
00:16:40is Lamar Murphy,
00:16:41a product of the tough streets
00:16:42of Overtown, Florida,
00:16:43on the outskirts of Miami.
00:16:45Growing up in that neighborhood,
00:16:46he easily could have gone
00:16:47the way of gangs,
00:16:48but instead of hanging out
00:16:49on the streets,
00:16:50he went to the Overtown gym
00:16:51to work out and start his career.
00:16:53Here he is at only 22,
00:16:54just four and a half years
00:16:56after turning pro
00:16:56and in a position
00:16:57to win a world championship.
00:16:59Lamar Murphy rated number seven
00:17:00in the world by the WBC,
00:17:0218-0 with one no contest,
00:17:0413 KOs.
00:17:07And here's the champion,
00:17:0824-year-old Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:17:10out of Mexico City.
00:17:11He has held the title
00:17:12for almost three years,
00:17:14winning it in 92
00:17:14with a ninth-round TKO
00:17:16over Wilfred Oroca.
00:17:18His toughest test
00:17:18was when he outpunched
00:17:19the hard-punching
00:17:20Lievander Johnson
00:17:21last August
00:17:21and then slowed down
00:17:23the elusive former champ,
00:17:24Calvin Grohl.
00:17:25He has an unblemished record
00:17:26of 37-0 with 29 KOs,
00:17:28including a streak
00:17:29of 17 consecutive knockouts
00:17:31between 1990 and 1992.
00:17:34He is second
00:17:34in the outstanding
00:17:35WBC strawweight champion
00:17:37Ricardo Lopez
00:17:38with the most wins
00:17:39by a current undefeated
00:17:40world champion.
00:17:42All right,
00:17:42let's check the statistical breakdown
00:17:44as we go to the tail of the tape.
00:17:45And Lamar Murphy,
00:17:46only 22,
00:17:47Gonzalez 24,
00:17:48just a one-inch height advantage
00:17:49for Gonzalez.
00:17:50Both hit the weight limit
00:17:51of 135
00:17:52and a three-inch reach advantage
00:17:54for the challenger,
00:17:55Murphy.
00:17:56And to the WBC rules
00:17:57for this championship fight,
00:17:5810-point must system in effect,
00:18:00three scoring judges,
00:18:01no standing eight count,
00:18:02no three-knockdown rule.
00:18:04Only the referee
00:18:04can stop the fight
00:18:05and a fighter cannot be saved
00:18:06by the belt
00:18:07except in the last round.
00:18:09Also,
00:18:09if there's an accidental foul
00:18:11before the start of the fourth,
00:18:12the fight will be ruled
00:18:13a no decision.
00:18:14If it happens
00:18:15after the start
00:18:15of the fourth round,
00:18:16they go to the scorecards.
00:18:18Gonzalez,
00:18:18a four-to-one favorite

00:21:02González.
00:21:08Once again,
00:21:09here's our referee
00:21:10in charge.
00:21:11Now to give instructions,
00:21:12Mitch Halpern.
00:21:13All right, gentlemen,
00:21:20we've already
00:21:20got on the instruction
00:21:21address here.
00:21:21We want a good fight
00:21:22and obey my commands
00:21:23at all times.
00:21:25Protect yourself
00:21:26at all times.
00:21:26Any questions?
00:21:27All right,
00:21:28let's go up.
00:21:28Come on,
00:21:28touch me.
00:21:32The arena
00:21:33filling up
00:21:34better than
00:21:3416,000
00:21:35expected here
00:21:36at the MGM Grand
00:21:37in Las Vegas.
00:21:38Ringside,
00:21:39he's going
00:21:39for $1,500
00:21:40apiece.
00:21:41First crack
00:21:42at a world title
00:21:43for 22-year-old
00:21:43Lamar Murphy,
00:21:44a hard puncher.
00:21:45His big punch,
00:21:46the straight
00:21:47right hand.
00:21:48He does have
00:21:4913 knockouts
00:21:50in his 18 victories,
00:21:51has eight first-round
00:21:52KOs,
00:21:5211 within
00:21:53two rounds.
00:21:56And here is
00:21:56the champion,
00:21:57Miguel Ángel
00:21:58González,
00:21:58doing some
00:21:59last-second
00:22:00praying,
00:22:00has the will
00:22:01of a champion,
00:22:02was in trouble
00:22:02in several
00:22:03of his title defenses,
00:22:05but always found
00:22:05a way to win.
00:22:06Has the potential
00:22:07to be recognized
00:22:07in the best
00:22:09pound-for-pound
00:22:10category,
00:22:11the knock
00:22:11on González
00:22:12weak chin,
00:22:13despite his
00:22:1437-0 record.
00:22:19And there's
00:22:20the bell,
00:22:20round one,
00:22:21scheduled for 12.
00:22:23An interesting
00:22:23ritual there
00:22:24to begin things
00:22:25for the champion,
00:22:26Miguel Ángel
00:22:26González.
00:22:27Wouldn't it be
00:22:27terrible if he gets
00:22:28up from that
00:22:28prayer and the guy
00:22:30is standing right
00:22:30there.
00:22:30Boy,
00:22:31he took a sweet
00:22:32time getting up.
00:22:33That was an
00:22:33awfully long prayer.
00:22:34I wonder if it's
00:22:34just for his chin.
00:22:35Yeah.
00:22:36His chin
00:22:37is suspect.
00:22:39González told us
00:22:39he's watched videos
00:22:40of Murphy
00:22:41and found that
00:22:41he's elusive,
00:22:42moves around a lot.
00:22:43So his game plan
00:22:44is to put pressure
00:22:45on him.
00:22:45He's fought a lot
00:22:46of fighters
00:22:46with the same style
00:22:47and getting very
00:22:48specific.
00:22:49González said
00:22:50he'll attack
00:22:50the lower abdomen.
00:22:51González,
00:22:52the champion
00:22:52in the black trunks
00:22:53with the gold sequence.
00:22:55The challenger
00:22:56is Lamar Cochise Murphy
00:22:58in the red trunks
00:22:59with the blue trim.
00:23:00He got that
00:23:00rather unusual nickname
00:23:02from, of all people,
00:23:03his mother.
00:23:05Right now,
00:23:05Murphy's pressing
00:23:06the fight.
00:23:07González is not
00:23:07coming forward at all.
00:23:09González is very cool
00:23:10and Murphy looks
00:23:12a little tight, Bob.
00:23:12He looks like
00:23:13he wants to get
00:23:14in there real bad
00:23:14and swing
00:23:15and puts him hurt
00:23:16on early.
00:23:17It's not easy
00:23:18to do on an experienced
00:23:19fighter like Miguel.
00:23:20And Murphy is 18 and 0,
00:23:22but he is really
00:23:23stepping up
00:23:24in terms of
00:23:25skilled opponents.
00:23:27Most of the names
00:23:27on his ring record
00:23:28are unrecognizable.
00:23:30And he doesn't seem
00:23:31to be giving that much
00:23:32respect to González.
00:23:32He's walking to him
00:23:33like he's the stronger
00:23:34of the two
00:23:34and he's the power puncher.
00:23:36He can punch, Bobby.
00:23:38I mean, he's
00:23:38Lamar has a good punch.
00:23:40I mean, he's from
00:23:41the Overtown.
00:23:41That's a tough, tough district.
00:23:43That's where I had
00:23:43my office for 20 years
00:23:44and boy, that is tough.
00:23:45If you can survive
00:23:46down there,
00:23:46you are a tough man.
00:23:49González admits
00:23:49he has had weight problems
00:23:51but says that is not
00:23:53an excuse he can use
00:23:54for a fight that
00:23:55is being televised worldwide.
00:23:57He feels, oh,
00:23:58he'll knock out
00:23:59Maman Murphy.
00:24:01He is respectful
00:24:02of Julio Cesar Chavez,
00:24:03but he does feel
00:24:04it's time for Chavez
00:24:05to pass the torch.
00:24:07Well, González certainly
00:24:07doesn't seem to be worried,
00:24:08does he, Bobby?
00:24:09He's taking him very poorly.
00:24:10The other guy's really
00:24:11pressing hard and fighting hard.
00:24:13He doesn't really seem
00:24:13to be upset yet.
00:24:15He doesn't have any
00:24:15bad intentions
00:24:16on too many of his punches.
00:24:17Very, very calm.
00:24:18Almost too calm.
00:24:20Yeah, I mean,
00:24:21he can get caught here early.
00:24:23González has a history
00:24:24of being a slow starter,
00:24:26but he is a very good finisher.
00:24:28Well, he's living up to that.
00:24:31Murphy said he'll show
00:24:32lots of movement
00:24:32side to side,
00:24:33punch from different angles,
00:24:34make his shots count.
00:24:36This is by far
00:24:36his biggest fight to date.
00:24:39Will he be distracted
00:24:40by the enormity of the moment
00:24:41being the first fight
00:24:42on the Mike Tyson undercard?
00:24:44He said no.
00:24:45But Sugar Ray Leonard
00:24:46told us in our
00:24:47fighter meeting yesterday
00:24:48very honest and interesting
00:24:50things to say
00:24:51how distracted he was
00:24:53when he first fought
00:24:54Roberto Durant.
00:24:54He just lost it
00:24:55because of the awesome
00:24:56nature of the event.
00:24:58This Tyson thing
00:24:59has taken on a life
00:24:59of its own.
00:25:00Less than 20 seconds
00:25:01remaining in round one.
00:25:03Murphy has done
00:25:05exceedingly well
00:25:06in this first round.
00:25:08He's putting all the pressure
00:25:09on his hands,
00:25:09better shots.
00:25:10Right now,
00:25:11González is not offering up
00:25:12much in the way of offense.
00:25:13A couple of good counters.
00:25:14It was a nice right hand,
00:25:14but not what I expected.
00:25:17Final seconds
00:25:17of the opening round
00:25:18for the WBC
00:25:19lightweight tunnel.
00:25:27You see the bottom
00:25:28of him around.
00:25:29Make him come to you.
00:25:30You understand
00:25:30what he's in?
00:25:31He's scared of you.
00:25:32Make him come to you.
00:25:33All right?
00:25:34Give me a little shakey shoulder.
00:25:35Come on, come on, come on.
00:25:36Give me a little shakey shoulder.
00:25:37Give me a little shakey shoulder.
00:25:39Don't let him take the shot
00:25:40to the body, okay?
00:25:41You gotta start getting the body.
00:25:42I want combinations
00:25:43and nothing else.
00:25:45All right?
00:25:46That's all I want.
00:25:47You're doing good.
00:25:48You got him scared.
00:25:49But, bro,
00:25:50a scared man is a dangerous man.
00:25:51You understand what I'm saying?
00:25:52All right.
00:26:05He's telling him,
00:26:05watch his hooks.
00:26:06Watch his hooks now.
00:26:07Make him miss the hook
00:26:08and then come back
00:26:09with a punch.
00:26:09Be calm.
00:26:10Take it easy,
00:26:11but step it up.
00:26:12And the other corner,
00:26:13I find it kind of strange, Bobby,
00:26:14that the guy says,
00:26:15make him come to you.
00:26:16Well, he won the round, Lamar,
00:26:17by coming to the other guy
00:26:18and chasing him all over the place.
00:26:20Makes no sense to me, Ferdy.
00:26:21Come to him?
00:26:22What are you talking about?
00:26:23All right, round two,
00:26:24Murphy pressing the action
00:26:25in round one,
00:26:26slightly marking up
00:26:27Gonzalez's face.
00:26:30Could be a little of a slow start
00:26:32for Gonzalez,
00:26:33but that has been his history.
00:26:36Gonzalez is the complete package
00:26:38when he gets it going.
00:26:39He's in excellent condition,
00:26:40well-schooled,
00:26:41a thinking man's fighter.
00:26:42He's fast.
00:26:43He has very good handspeed.
00:26:45Keep the punches up
00:26:46since referee Mitch Halpern
00:26:47to Gonzalez,
00:26:49the champion.
00:26:50Gonzalez with fast combinations.
00:26:51We see some of the foot movement here.
00:26:53His best punch
00:26:54is the straight right cross
00:26:55and uppercut.
00:26:56I think he's getting awake, Bobby.
00:26:58He's just waking up
00:26:59and he's deciding
00:27:00to start fighting some.
00:27:01It's the champion,
00:27:02Gonzalez,
00:27:03who's starting to pop hard,
00:27:04hard body shots in there.
00:27:06Going to the body.
00:27:07Well, even the great
00:27:08Julio says that
00:27:09Chavez gives away
00:27:10a round or two
00:27:11once in a while.
00:27:12I just didn't like
00:27:13the way he gave that one away.
00:27:14Well, that was a gift.
00:27:15I mean, he hardly did anything.
00:27:17But now he's starting
00:27:18to look like a champion.
00:27:22Bubbing right hand there
00:27:23by Gonzalez.
00:27:24Yeah, that right hand,
00:27:25though, Steve,
00:27:25you notice he's slapping.
00:27:26He's kind of turning,
00:27:27not even turning it over,
00:27:28not looping it properly,
00:27:29slapping it.
00:27:30Now, uh-oh.
00:27:32A point being up
00:27:33for Gonzalez
00:27:34for a low blow.
00:27:37He said,
00:27:38I gave you two warnings.
00:27:40And he did.
00:27:41This is early
00:27:41in the championship match
00:27:42for that,
00:27:43but he wants to take control early.
00:27:44Stop that punching.
00:27:45He just hollered,
00:27:47keep it up again.
00:27:47That was borderline.
00:27:48So this could turn out
00:27:49to be another very big round
00:27:50for the challenger,
00:27:51LeVon Murphy.
00:27:53Another strange day in Vegas.
00:27:55We're starting out.
00:27:56The challenger's already
00:27:56got the first run.
00:27:57He's already got a point
00:27:58in the second round.
00:27:59Uh-oh.
00:28:00Setting the tone early here.
00:28:01Uh-oh.
00:28:03Another one of those days.
00:28:05Mitch Halpern
00:28:06making the decision.
00:28:07He's repped
00:28:08four and a half years
00:28:09and worked his way
00:28:10up to nice respectability.
00:28:11Combination
00:28:11by LeVon Murphy,
00:28:13the left-hand land
00:28:13and the right-hand miss.
00:28:14Right now,
00:28:16Gonzalez looks as if
00:28:17he's in slow motion.
00:28:18He doesn't seem
00:28:18to be reacting.
00:28:19His combinations
00:28:19are not getting off.
00:28:23Oh,
00:28:24another very low blow
00:28:26major south of the border
00:28:27with the left.
00:28:29Another low blow.
00:28:32Bobby,
00:28:32how many points
00:28:33can he take
00:28:33in one round
00:28:34for low blows?
00:28:35That one hit him
00:28:35in his seat.
00:28:36I know.
00:28:36Can he take another one?
00:28:37That was another low blow.
00:28:42Meanwhile,
00:28:42Lamar Murphy
00:28:43looking extremely confident.
00:28:45Oh,
00:28:45stacking up points here
00:28:47as his fight progresses.
00:28:48Lamar Murphy
00:28:49looks relaxed
00:28:50like he's fighting
00:28:50in Overtown
00:28:51on 2nd Avenue
00:28:52and 10th Street.
00:28:52He looks like
00:28:52he's just having fun.
00:28:54He is having
00:28:55an Overtown evening here.
00:28:57You know,
00:28:58it's funny.
00:28:58Both fighters
00:28:58thought,
00:28:59this guy's never
00:29:00fought anybody like me.
00:29:02Murphy said,
00:29:02he's never fought
00:29:03an American fighter
00:29:04can move like this
00:29:04and Gonzales said,
00:29:06he's never fought
00:29:06a Mexican fighter
00:29:07fights like I do.
00:29:12Coming in,
00:29:13we knew that Murphy
00:29:14was tough.
00:29:15Certainly has the appearance
00:29:15of a tough guy
00:29:16with the no-socks approach
00:29:17a la Mike Tyson.
00:29:21Under 10 seconds
00:29:22in round two.
00:29:23He got hit right
00:29:24on the button
00:29:24with Gonzales
00:29:25and what appeared
00:29:25to be his best right hand
00:29:26and just smiled at him.
00:29:27Yeah.
00:29:28Boy,
00:29:29that's hard.
00:29:30One point taken away.
00:29:32Detailed instructions
00:29:51coming in
00:29:51on how to handle
00:29:53the combinations
00:29:55that he's not landing,
00:29:56but he has not said
00:29:57anything about
00:29:58punching to the body
00:29:58or not punching to the body.
00:30:00They have not addressed
00:30:01losing a point at all.
00:30:02Apparently,
00:30:05they might not have understood
00:30:06that he lost a point.
00:30:07He could have well
00:30:08lost that round as well.
00:30:09I'll tell you right there,
00:30:10you saw that.
00:30:10Let's look right south
00:30:11of the border
00:30:12and it was clearly
00:30:13below the belt.
00:30:14And he had been warned twice.
00:30:15Mitch Halpern,
00:30:16a lot of patients.
00:30:17He warned him,
00:30:18clearly told him.
00:30:19Nothing wrong with that.
00:30:20There you see it again.
00:30:21One point deducted
00:30:28from Gonzalez
00:30:29in the last round.
00:30:30Gonzalez could be down
00:30:31by three points already
00:30:32as we head into round three.
00:30:34Scheduled for 12
00:30:35for the WBC Lightweight Championship.
00:30:37Lamar Murphy thinking upset.
00:30:38Well,
00:30:39they certainly
00:30:39aren't worried
00:30:40in this corner
00:30:41about the slow start
00:30:42and the points taken off.
00:30:43They just didn't address it at all.
00:30:45Maybe they are so confident
00:30:46this is going to end up
00:30:47going to knock out.
00:30:48Now,
00:30:48body shots by
00:30:49Gonzales.
00:30:51And back comes Lamar Murphy
00:30:52with a vicious combination
00:30:53and landing
00:30:54with both of those punches.
00:30:55All over.
00:30:56Swarming all over the champion.
00:30:58Combinations are really nice
00:30:59to make sure
00:30:59he's trying to just
00:31:00ward him off,
00:31:01bite his time,
00:31:02save his strength,
00:31:02but he's getting hit clean
00:31:03with a lot of those shots.
00:31:04That was big point builders
00:31:05for Lamar Murphy.
00:31:07Big point builders
00:31:08from the kid from Overtown.
00:31:10Outstanding flurry.
00:31:11Oh,
00:31:12there was a good right hook
00:31:13by Gonzalez
00:31:14that got through,
00:31:15but Murphy showing the chin.
00:31:16You know,
00:31:17he does show that
00:31:18Chavez coldness.
00:31:19Here was that big attack
00:31:20and he came out
00:31:21looking like nothing.
00:31:22And he's still going
00:31:23to the body
00:31:23and he's still hitting
00:31:24right at the butt level.
00:31:25He is very close
00:31:26to those body shots.
00:31:27He has not stopped
00:31:27any of the body attack.
00:31:28Left, right, left, right.
00:31:30He's staying in the body.
00:31:33Going to the body
00:31:34is Gonzalez
00:31:35and then back upstairs.
00:31:36Missed with that
00:31:37left uppercut.
00:31:39Well,
00:31:39that's definitely
00:31:39a Chavez attack.
00:31:40The hook to the body
00:31:41and then back up to the head
00:31:42is definitely
00:31:43Julio C.
00:31:43There he goes.
00:31:45Left hook by Gonzalez,
00:31:46but counterpunching
00:31:47by Lamar Murphy
00:31:48and get those punches
00:31:49up again
00:31:50or else Mitch Helper
00:31:51is going to duck
00:31:51yet another point.
00:31:53Now,
00:31:53you watch the difference
00:31:54when he throws
00:31:54his left hook to champion.
00:31:56He's sometimes
00:31:56falling back
00:31:57where Chavez
00:31:57is digging in
00:31:58going forward.
00:32:00That's a good point,
00:32:02Bobby.
00:32:02He right now
00:32:03is not putting
00:32:04the heavy punches together.
00:32:06He's not hurting
00:32:07Lamar Murphy at all
00:32:08and Lamar Murphy
00:32:09is having a picnic
00:32:11and Murphy now
00:32:12flicking the jab
00:32:13good head movement
00:32:15by Murphy
00:32:15as well
00:32:16looking for the opening
00:32:16trying to set up
00:32:17the right hand.
00:32:20Another low blow
00:32:20by Gonzalez
00:32:21Halpern.
00:32:21Let it go.
00:32:23He was on the other side
00:32:24of him.
00:32:24He's on the other side
00:32:25of him.
00:32:25Didn't see it.
00:32:25I think that's the only reason
00:32:26he let it go.
00:32:28I'll tell you what,
00:32:28this is going to be
00:32:28a low blow festival
00:32:29for sure.
00:32:31Another near low blow.
00:32:33Mitch Halpern warning
00:32:34Gonzalez to keep it up.
00:32:37He has not deterred
00:32:38the champion
00:32:39from firing those shots
00:32:40down there.
00:32:40I mean,
00:32:41he has his way of fighting.
00:32:43He's not going to change
00:32:43for anybody.
00:32:45Oh,
00:32:45there was nearly a low blow
00:32:46but he kept it just
00:32:47at the waistline
00:32:48with the left uppercut.
00:32:50Now Gonzalez goes upstairs
00:32:51and again digging to the rim
00:32:54but getting the cautioning
00:32:54from Mitch Halpern.
00:32:56Oh,
00:32:56that's his style of fighting
00:32:57to the body.
00:32:58He's certainly sticking to it.
00:32:59You've got to admire him
00:33:00for that.
00:33:03Trying to wear down
00:33:04the challenger.
00:33:04Oh,
00:33:05good left hook
00:33:05by Gonzalez
00:33:06that got in cleanly.
00:33:08He's starting to land
00:33:08a little more clean
00:33:09with his shots
00:33:09and they're starting
00:33:10to become a little heavier.
00:33:12Yeah,
00:33:12I think they're starting
00:33:12to have an effect
00:33:13on Lamar Murphy.
00:33:14Gonzalez slow down some.
00:33:15Gaining steam here
00:33:16as his fight wears on
00:33:18as we approach
00:33:1910 seconds to go
00:33:19in the third.
00:33:23Right,
00:33:23come back,
00:33:23come back.
00:33:27Well,
00:33:28up next,
00:33:28the WBA Heavyweight Championship
00:33:30is Bruce Seldon
00:33:31looks to defend
00:33:32against Joe Hipp.
00:33:33Let's go over
00:33:34to Jim Gray
00:33:34in the Seldon dressing room.
00:33:36Jim.
00:33:36All right,
00:33:37thanks,
00:33:37Steve.
00:33:37I'm here with Bruce Seldon.
00:33:38Bruce,
00:33:39anxious,
00:33:39nerves here
00:33:40in your first title defense?
00:33:42Ready.
00:33:42Ready to go out there
00:33:43and do work,
00:33:44man.
00:33:44A little bit of nerves,
00:33:45you know what I'm saying,
00:33:46a little nervous tension.
00:33:47Did the butterflies get bigger?
00:33:48Are they tonight?
00:33:49Yeah,
00:33:49they are a little bigger tonight.
00:33:50But see,
00:33:50that's what makes a good fight.
00:33:52You know what I'm saying?
00:33:52How about being
00:33:53the heavyweight champion
00:33:54and being the undercard?
00:33:56Does that bother you at all?
00:33:57Well,
00:33:57I love being the heavyweight champion.
00:33:58You know,
00:33:59that's what I trained.
00:33:59That's what I fought
00:34:00eight years for
00:34:01was to one day
00:34:02become heavyweight champion
00:34:03to work.
00:34:03But I say to myself,
00:34:05would I rather be on top
00:34:08of a car
00:34:09that nobody sees
00:34:10or on the bottom of a car
00:34:12that everybody's going to see?
00:34:14So,
00:34:14you know,
00:34:15I'm thankful
00:34:15that I'm on the
00:34:16Mike Tyson undercard.
00:34:18It doesn't bother me at all.
00:34:19I'm just thankful
00:34:20to be on it.
00:34:20Bruce,
00:34:21good luck.
00:34:21That's a great attitude.
00:34:23All right,
00:34:23let's go back out to the team.
00:34:24All right,
00:34:24Jim,
00:34:25thank you very much
00:34:26here at the MGM.
00:34:27Graham Bruce Seldon,
00:34:27a lot more focused
00:34:28and mature over the last
00:34:29few years
00:34:30and really did a terrific job
00:34:32in winning the vacant title
00:34:33over Tony Tucker.
00:34:34He'll be coming up
00:34:35after this one
00:34:36against Joe Hipp,
00:34:37the first Southpaw
00:34:38that Seldon will have ever seen.
00:34:40All right,
00:34:40here we go now
00:34:41into round four.
00:34:42Murphy connected
00:34:43with a nice flurry
00:34:44to open up round three
00:34:45and then Gonzalez
00:34:46starting to complain
00:34:48about Mitch Halpern's warning
00:34:49and he keeps
00:34:51throwing those low blows.
00:34:53That's his body attack.
00:34:54Really,
00:34:55in all fairness,
00:34:56you know,
00:34:56that's the protector
00:34:57is pretty high
00:34:58on Lamar Murphy
00:35:00and that's his attack.
00:35:01That's the way he fights.
00:35:02He can't abandon the body
00:35:03and just go to the head.
00:35:04So he's taking his chances
00:35:05with the referee.
00:35:06I'll tell you what,
00:35:07some of them were just
00:35:07a little too low.
00:35:08The belt is actually
00:35:09another protector,
00:35:10so yeah,
00:35:10and they were below the belt.
00:35:12Yeah.
00:35:13It doesn't keep it
00:35:14from throwing them,
00:35:15though, Bobby.
00:35:15Boy,
00:35:16this guy's determined.
00:35:18Murphy
00:35:18with a very effective,
00:35:20purposeful jab
00:35:21and once again,
00:35:21the warning
00:35:22about the low blows
00:35:23for Mitch Halpern.
00:35:25Murphy coming forward.
00:35:27Combination to the head
00:35:28by Lamar Murphy
00:35:29who continues
00:35:30to look impressive.
00:35:32And now watch the head.
00:35:34The champion can't deal
00:35:36with the speed right now
00:35:37of Lamar Murphy.
00:35:38He's having a lot
00:35:38of trouble with him.
00:35:39Except Lamar doesn't get
00:35:41him enough.
00:35:42You know,
00:35:42he started that last round
00:35:43beautifully and he started
00:35:44the end of the last round
00:35:45beautifully,
00:35:45but in between,
00:35:46he was getting pummeled.
00:35:47I mean,
00:35:47this guy's doing
00:35:48a systematic job
00:35:49of cutting down his body.
00:35:50He is truly fighting
00:35:52a patient fight,
00:35:53waiting to do his damage
00:35:54and then come in
00:35:55and finish.
00:35:55Good left hook
00:35:56by Lamar Murphy.
00:35:58Turned Gonzalez's head
00:35:59to the side.
00:36:01Poking left,
00:36:02straight left by Murphy.
00:36:03That's getting through.
00:36:05Well,
00:36:05I'll tell you,
00:36:06much like Chavez,
00:36:06Gonzalez's face
00:36:07is totally emotional.
00:36:11Lamar Murphy,
00:36:12a turn pro in May of 91.
00:36:13A slapping left hook
00:36:14there by Gonzalez.
00:36:16That connected.
00:36:18You see,
00:36:18once again,
00:36:18he did it as he was
00:36:19moving back or to the side,
00:36:20not coming forward
00:36:21like Chavez,
00:36:21not planted with his legs
00:36:22well under him.
00:36:24Not the same power.
00:36:25Now doubling up
00:36:27on the left hook
00:36:28is Gonzalez.
00:36:29Looking confident here
00:36:30in the fourth round.
00:36:32Bobby,
00:36:32how about the
00:36:33carelessness
00:36:34of the hands
00:36:35of Lamar Murphy?
00:36:35He's always got his hands
00:36:37way down,
00:36:37way down.
00:36:38Yeah,
00:36:38Lamar Murphy looks like
00:36:39he's having too good a time
00:36:40and too comfortable
00:36:40and he doesn't seem
00:36:41to be threatened
00:36:42by the power of Gonzalez
00:36:43and he's already felt it.
00:36:44And now he's talking
00:36:45to Gonzalez.
00:36:46Hit me,
00:36:47huh?
00:36:47Yeah,
00:36:47now he's playing
00:36:48to Gonzalez.
00:36:48He's trying to toy
00:36:49with him hot-dogging
00:36:50and that could be detrimental.
00:36:53Yeah,
00:36:53the playing's okay
00:36:54if you really want to
00:36:55but not why
00:36:56you're getting hit.
00:36:56No,
00:36:57he's showboating
00:36:58and that's going
00:36:59to only make
00:36:59the champion angry.
00:37:01Less than 30 seconds
00:37:02round four.
00:37:04A little bit of a low shot
00:37:06there by Gonzalez again.
00:37:07Now he digs upstairs.
00:37:10He's got to start
00:37:11getting more busy.
00:37:12Lamar,
00:37:13the early advantage
00:37:14is being whittled away here.
00:37:17You're right here now.
00:37:17Come on.
00:37:18Break, break, break.
00:37:18That's pretty good
00:37:19defense there by Gonzalez
00:37:20and hitting on the break
00:37:22and again
00:37:23that gets a dark stare
00:37:24from Mitch Halpern.
00:37:25Oh,
00:37:26keep it up again.
00:37:29A very interested spectator,
00:37:44WBC super lightweight champion,
00:37:46Julio Cesar Chavez on hand.
00:37:49The crowd reacting to Julio on the big screen.
00:37:51Chavez says he's sick and tired of hearing about the Gonzalez, who claims he'll knock out Chavez.
00:37:56He says Chavez is ducking him.
00:37:58They'd have no problem, I'll tell you this, filling up cavernous Azteca Stadium.
00:38:02A very interested spectator, WBC super lightweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez on hand.
00:38:09The crowd reacting to Julio on the big screen.
00:38:11Chavez says he's sick and tired of hearing about the Gonzalez, who claims he'll knock out Chavez.
00:38:16He says Chavez is ducking him.
00:38:18They'd have no problem, I'll tell you this, filling up cavernous Azteca Stadium.
00:38:22Can you imagine what that would be?
00:38:23That would be huge.
00:38:24Two Mexican heroes.
00:38:32You need a gentleman to go to the body.
00:38:34That bam, bam, bam indicated three punches to the body.
00:38:37Repeat triple shots to the body.
00:38:39He is working the body very, very well.
00:38:44If he can just avoid losing the point.
00:38:46He is doing, I think he's getting the job done.
00:38:50What he wants to do, he's getting done.
00:38:51He's wearing out Lamar.
00:38:52Lamar is certainly not as fast, nor is he as aggressive as he was in those first two rounds
00:38:56where he looked like he was going to have a romp here.
00:38:59And we certainly have been witnessing the terrific hand and foot speed of the champion, Gonzalez.
00:39:04Got off to a bit of a slow start here, but beginning to turn things around.
00:39:09Round five.
00:39:09He can't stand still and just be a heavy bag to a guy's punching like that and not return
00:39:16some kind of powder.
00:39:17I mean, you got to do something here.
00:39:20And like any fighter who gets in the limelight, you're going to have your critics.
00:39:24The rap on Gonzalez, as we mentioned, the weak chin, sometimes mechanical, lethargic.
00:39:29But many, if not all of these problems may be due to his struggle with weight.
00:39:34Eventually, it's going to be time for him to leave this weight class and move up to 140.
00:39:38Well, I'll tell you, that weight struggle is something that I know a lot about.
00:39:41It can really deplete a man's energy and make him fight a fight that is nothing reminiscent
00:39:45of what he is.
00:39:47That's very true.
00:39:48That's very true.
00:39:49But all those adjectives don't add up to this guy's undefeated record and brilliance.
00:39:53That he's got somebody, those things are mis-mabeled on this guy.
00:39:58Well, at just 24 years of age, he's making his 10th defense already of this title.
00:40:02That'll say something.
00:40:03He's 37-0 with 29 knockouts.
00:40:06He doesn't look lethargic tonight.
00:40:08He's popping and fighting, and he's carrying a fight.
00:40:11He's doing it all.
00:40:11He's held the title almost three years.
00:40:14Flurry by Murphy, but back comes Gonzalez.
00:40:16Beautiful counterpoint against Gonzalez, and those punches are landing.
00:40:19Watch the head, says Mitch Haltrin, as his heads came together.
00:40:22And right now, Murphy refuses to give too much ground.
00:40:25He's coming forward.
00:40:25Even though he's getting hit, he's getting some shots in.
00:40:27He wants to be the aggressor here.
00:40:32Miguel on hell, Gonzalez in the black trunks with the gold trip.
00:40:36Turn pro at 18, won the title at 21.
00:40:39Has defended the title nine times.
00:40:43Early on, Steve, early in the week, he was a huge favorite.
00:40:46Odds dropping, like, unbelievable.
00:40:49He started out at something like 12 to 1.
00:40:51Now it's got down to 4 to 1 just prior to the fight.
00:40:56Right uppercut by Gonzalez that's stuck in there.
00:40:58Murphy showing a good chance.
00:41:00Nice hook followed behind it, and there is lead right hand.
00:41:02He's starting to land those shots cleaner.
00:41:04Bobby's starting to hit.
00:41:05He's starting to get the range and hit the head.
00:41:06Now he's looking more like Mr. Chavez.
00:41:08Coming forward, landing, throwing flurries of punches.
00:41:21Now going with the jab, he tripled up with that left jab.
00:41:25He even got a fourth punch into the midsection.
00:41:27Gonzalez looking more impressive as his fight wears on.
00:41:35And Murphy wears out.
00:41:41Gonzalez now having his way.
00:41:43Going downstairs, upstairs.
00:41:45The challenger, Cochise Murphy, looking over to help her for a little assistance.
00:41:48He's not going to help, as the bell sounds.
00:41:52Well, we mentioned it before.
00:41:54We mentioned WBC's Broadway champion, Ricardo Lopez.
00:41:57Let's take a look at the current champions and their records.
00:42:00Undefeated, you see Miguel Angel Gonzalez right up there at number two.
00:42:05Current undefeated world champions behind the splendid Ricardo Lopez.
00:42:10Also of Mexico, who's 40 and 0.
00:42:12That's some pretty good company for Gonzalez.
00:42:13And he wants him to impose his potency.
00:42:29He says, keep your distance, but keep coming forward.
00:42:31Above all, keep the combinations coming, but keep your potency.
00:42:35Meaning, start punching hard.
00:42:37Here we go.
00:42:43It's funny, we're in an active corner here, right off to the right of Lamar Murphy's corner,
00:42:50and we are getting paved.
00:42:53Round six.
00:42:54Oh, a little slip there.
00:42:56A little moisture.
00:42:57Yeah, that's all that much.
00:43:00They were using water and ice cubes on Lamar Murphy,
00:43:03and he didn't seem to need to wake him up that much.
00:43:06We got a little bit of a taste of it as well.
00:43:09Kind of refreshing.
00:43:10Round six, scheduled for 12, the WBC Lightweight Championship.
00:43:15Miguel Angel Gonzalez after a slow start,
00:43:18getting his act together and showing the complete package right here.
00:43:23He's still not showing me Chavez-like qualities, Ferdy.
00:43:26I still don't think that I see a little bit of Chavez getting beaten by this man.
00:43:29I don't either, Bobby.
00:43:31I mean, he's got a little ways to go before he can start comparing himself.
00:43:35He's great.
00:43:37Chavez, and this guy's not that category yet.
00:43:39Not from what we're looking at, not from what we see.
00:43:42The area of which you can compare him,
00:43:44he's pretty much equal in low blows right now.
00:43:47I doubt he's equal as a body puncher.
00:43:50Boy, he has learned his own.
00:43:52His head just got snapped back by a Murphy shot that was really strong.
00:43:57And Murphy now fighting angry.
00:43:59Murphy's combinations have tailed off a little bit, though.
00:44:02Kind of one at a time, waiting too much.
00:44:04I think that's that body action.
00:44:06I mean, all those body shots start to slow you up,
00:44:08start to slow you down,
00:44:09and all of a sudden you haven't got that intensity that you had at the beginning.
00:44:12That is what a body attack's supposed to do.
00:44:17Boy, for guys that are studying fighting and want to learn about body attacks,
00:44:20they should study this film.
00:44:21Oh, uh-oh, uh-oh.
00:44:24Here we go again.
00:44:25Gosh, he puts us up.
00:44:26That's one point.
00:44:27Another point being deducted from Gonzales.
00:44:30Well, you've got to keep our punches up, okay?
00:44:32Gonzales does speak some English, so he certainly understands.
00:44:35And, of course, that's the universal language.
00:44:37That one won't hurt this much because he's carrying the round,
00:44:40so at the very best, you're going to get an even round here
00:44:42unless Lamar does something spectacular here
00:44:45to win the round.
00:44:47But if he wins the round, then he's got a big round.
00:44:49He's got two rounds, two points.
00:44:51And, uh, Gonzales undaunted goes right back to the body.
00:44:55Murphy missing.
00:44:56Some great defense head movement there by Gonzales.
00:44:58Oh, there's a landing with a right front.
00:45:00Gorgeous touch by Gonzales.
00:45:02There's a beautiful uppercut right behind that, Steve,
00:45:03but it's not having an effect on Murphy.
00:45:05Look, he's right in his face.
00:45:07Murphy swarming all over Gonzales in the corner.
00:45:11A barrage by Murphy.
00:45:14You know, something we didn't talk about just a minute ago with the low blow, too.
00:45:16Murphy kind of drag and dog down and the punch went south of the border
00:45:20almost because of what Murphy did by pulling on the back of his head.
00:45:25So plenty of action here in round six and throughout most of this fight.
00:45:30But Murphy's standing still.
00:45:31He's not on his toes.
00:45:32He's standing still.
00:45:33Immobile and straight up.
00:45:34And Murphy is counterpunching successfully here.
00:45:38I'll say that.
00:45:39He's getting tagged, but he's answering back.
00:45:41Furious exchanges under 15 seconds round six.
00:45:49They are not letting up.
00:45:50Another great flurry here by the challenger Murphy to the head of Gonzales.
00:45:55They're not that hard.
00:45:56And Gonzales able to come through as the bell sounds.
00:46:00And looking to hit again after the bell.
00:46:02Tremendous action to end that round.
00:46:05Well, earlier here at the MGM Grand Hotel, just moments ago, the arrival of former undisputed
00:46:19world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
00:46:21His first fight back as he'll be taking on Peter McNeely, his first fight in over four
00:46:28years, a little bit later.
00:46:30And judging from the reaction this event has generated, he is even bigger, more, bigger,
00:46:35more popular than he was before he went to prison.
00:46:37Let's take a look at that low blow that finally, finally wore out the patience of Mitch Halpern
00:46:49and said, that's enough.
00:46:51Oh, that is south of the border.
00:46:54Yes, that is a blow that's illegitimate.
00:46:58And since he had warned him so many times, he had to take a point off.
00:47:01Mitch doing a good job.
00:47:02But boy, suppose Mitch's work is what turns this title fight around.
00:47:06Suppose that.
00:47:07Mitch, take charge, Halpern.
00:47:10Very busy man tonight.
00:47:11Round seven.
00:47:11We're only halfway through the fight.
00:47:13One more point.
00:47:13It technically is a disqualification.
00:47:15Am I not right, fellas?
00:47:16That's what I'm thinking, Bobby.
00:47:17So what if this guy could win on a disqualification?
00:47:21Ouch.
00:47:24Because you know he is not going to stop punching to the body, Bobby.
00:47:27He is not going to stop punching to the body.
00:47:30No, but I'm wondering just how far Mitch Halpern is going to let it go to take a title by disqualification.
00:47:34Oh, boy.
00:47:34I think it's going to have to go somewhere.
00:47:36We might have a second Mexican-American War if we do.
00:47:41Yeah, that would be awful to have to lose a title that way.
00:47:44I know where my table is going.
00:47:47Another warning to the back of the head.
00:47:50This is turning into a foul fest, but it's one-sided.
00:47:57He keeps hitting on the break, too.
00:47:58I mean, Gonzalez keeps hitting on the break, but he's done them about three or four times,
00:48:01and that's the one thing Halpern has not warned him about.
00:48:04It's actually legal to hit on the break
00:48:06if the referee doesn't physically break.
00:48:07If he says step back, break it up, break out, fight out,
00:48:11you've got to protect yourself at all times.
00:48:12That's the last instruction I'll always tell you.
00:48:13It's a small abrasion beginning to form
00:48:16under the right eye of Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:48:18but having no effect at this particular moment.
00:48:22Little cut.
00:48:25Murphy needs more of those mono-mono stuff
00:48:28that he was getting away.
00:48:29You know, he didn't.
00:48:30Oh, right hook.
00:48:31Countering by Gonzalez.
00:48:33Just as Murphy was coming in.
00:48:35Well, you see, he was also back.
00:48:37His weight was back.
00:48:38That right hook would have hurt more
00:48:39had it been a forward punch.
00:48:42Gonzalez looking to set up that right
00:48:44with the stiff left jab.
00:48:46Gonzalez, a 4-1 favorite,
00:48:48could be in trouble if this bout goes the distance
00:48:50with all of the point deductions for low blows.
00:48:54Well, because of all...
00:48:55Right uppercut by Gonzalez that got in.
00:48:57I'm sorry, because of all of that,
00:48:59I've got this an even fight right now,
00:49:00mathematically has turned to our mental scholar.
00:49:03Bobby, what you got?
00:49:04Actually, I have a point right now for Murphy
00:49:06because of the two-point conduct deductions.
00:49:09You know, it's that close where it could be anybody's fight still.
00:49:13His champion's starting to take charge,
00:49:14but he's losing points.
00:49:16Yeah.
00:49:16He just can't keep losing points like that.
00:49:18That's like losing rounds big time.
00:49:29Under 30 seconds remaining in round seven.
00:49:40Murphy on the attack, but not getting anywhere.
00:49:42Murphy giving a very good account of himself,
00:49:53not winning the round, but he's still standing there.
00:49:55He's still standing there, and he's giving all he's got.
00:49:58And then Gonzalez is slanted with a crisp right hook at the bell.
00:50:03Right now, let's go to Jim Hill and Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:50:05Fellas?
00:50:06All right, Steve, thank you very much.
00:50:07Ray, you were talking about Lamar Murphy
00:50:09and how arrogant and cocky he is in the ring,
00:50:11and you like that.
00:50:12Well, I love that, Jim.
00:50:13As a matter of fact, in the earlier rounds,
00:50:15Lamar Murphy displayed no respect whatsoever for the champion,
00:50:19and that was probably a way to approach a championship fight.
00:50:21But what's happening now, he's starting to fall back.
00:50:24He's starting to allow Gonzalez to throw some body shots.
00:50:26He shouldn't wait.
00:50:27He should stay aggressive.
00:50:28Is he starting to get a little lazy?
00:50:30I think he's getting a little lackadaisical,
00:50:32but what he needs to do is stay aggressive and stay arrogant.
00:50:35Are you kind of surprised at the way the champion is fighting?
00:50:38You know, he's hitting on the break,
00:50:39holding behind the neck, and a lot of low blows.
00:50:41Well, the majority of the time, that happens through frustration.
00:50:44I don't think he can hit the elusive Murphy on the chin.
00:50:47He's been trying pretty much for the past six, seven rounds,
00:50:50and he hasn't done that.
00:50:51Okay, let's go back down to ringside once again, Steve Albert.
00:50:53Steve?
00:50:54Thank you, Jim.
00:50:55It's Sugar Ray.
00:50:56We are getting ready for round eight.
00:50:57Lamar Murphy going right back at it now
00:51:00with Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:51:03They touch gloves.
00:51:04There is a respect here between these two fighters,
00:51:07but they are at war.
00:51:09We have not heard what's been happening in Lamar Murphy's corner,
00:51:12and pretty soon I'd like to hear what those guys think is going on.
00:51:16You know, I think they're giving him good instructions,
00:51:19and he's hanging right in here.
00:51:20I mean, you know, there's a very even fight up here
00:51:22with these two points deducted.
00:51:23He's still, Murphy, that is,
00:51:25he's still pushing the champion back.
00:51:26He's not allowing Gonzalez to come forward,
00:51:28set himself, and I really am just...
00:51:30Uh-oh, Bobby, Bobby.
00:51:32It's a warning.
00:51:33Here we go again.
00:51:33That's two warnings.
00:51:34I'm very disappointed in the right hand,
00:51:36the way it's being thrown by the champion.
00:51:38Now, powerful shots to the body by Gonzalez
00:51:41with right and left.
00:51:42Going downstairs and upstairs with right hooks and left hooks
00:51:45is Gonzalez the champion,
00:51:46opening things up here in round eight just a bit.
00:51:50Oh, he looks really cocky right now,
00:51:53dancing around, waiting for that little opening,
00:51:55head movement, crouching, moving inside.
00:51:58The countering jab, and then the straight right by Murphy.
00:52:02Combination by Gonzalez.
00:52:05Oh, he's all over the place now.
00:52:07Gonzalez, landing.
00:52:09Oh, he's beating a tattoo on the body
00:52:11and the head of Lamar.
00:52:12Now, here's where Lamar should shine in here,
00:52:14but he's letting Lamar get away.
00:52:16He should follow him in a corner now.
00:52:17Trigger.
00:52:18And Lamar's not really punching.
00:52:19You're kind of pulling little tippity-tap punches.
00:52:21It's not really on them.
00:52:22When he had him in a corner,
00:52:23he should have triggered it off.
00:52:24He didn't.
00:52:25Now, here's where Gonzalez is showing
00:52:27the will of a champion.
00:52:29He knows because of the point deductions,
00:52:31he might have some difficulty.
00:52:33This thing goes the distance,
00:52:34and he has come back more than once
00:52:36to win in tough situations
00:52:38and defend his title nine times.
00:52:41Combination landing there by Murphy.
00:52:43Murphy now pouring it on,
00:52:45snapping the head back of Gonzalez,
00:52:47but Gonzalez standing right in there
00:52:48and showing a very good chin
00:52:51despite what we said earlier.
00:52:52See, it's the speedy punches that are getting on Gonzalez.
00:52:55Right up, uppercut.
00:52:57Murphy going wild in that corner.
00:52:59What a play.
00:52:59Low blow by Gonzalez.
00:53:01Getting away with it.
00:53:02Murphy made the mistake of stopping
00:53:04and looking at the referee
00:53:04just when he had Gonzalez going.
00:53:07Three straight harrowing right hands.
00:53:08Hey, that's pretty good stuff from Lamar Murphy.
00:53:10What a chance to know this barrage here
00:53:12by the challenger, Murphy.
00:53:15And he certainly found the target.
00:53:17If this guy's got a weak chin, Bobby,
00:53:18I don't know.
00:53:19And you know what?
00:53:20Murphy's punches are not that heavy.
00:53:21From quick combinations,
00:53:23they're not that heavy shot.
00:53:26Lamar Murphy, undefeated, 18-0.
00:53:29But this, his biggest opponent thus far
00:53:33in his young career.
00:53:35Lamar Murphy acting like
00:53:37it's just another fight in the overtime.
00:53:38He's certainly not giving him respect.
00:53:40He's bowling him as the aggressor.
00:53:41And this round, he is pummeling the champion.
00:53:43If anything, Gonzalez showing too much respect
00:53:46to the challenge.
00:53:46You saw when they came out,
00:53:47he cut Murphy's glove.
00:53:50Oh, good luck.
00:53:51Champion keeps his head too high, Steve.
00:53:53Lamar Murphy opening up on Gonzalez.
00:53:57That's the bell sound.
00:54:00Excellent, excellent work by Lamar Murphy.
00:54:03First big, big, big round.
00:54:05Let's listen.
00:54:06How are you, all right?
00:54:08Let's do it.
00:54:11You don't want this, motherfucker.
00:54:12You, you, I'm down, little motherfucker, all right?
00:54:15You did that.
00:54:16That's how you do it.
00:54:16You won that round.
00:54:17All right?
00:54:18I want more of that, Murphy.
00:54:19All right?
00:54:20How you feel?
00:54:20How you feel?
00:54:21I want more of that.
00:54:22Keep feeling good.
00:54:23All right?
00:54:23I want you to try to double up the fucking hook.
00:54:25Double up the hook.
00:54:26You're getting in.
00:54:27You're getting in close.
00:54:27That's good.
00:54:28But, Murphy, you ain't using that short stick.
00:54:30All right, let's take a look at this rapid-fire machine gun-like punching that he did.
00:54:35Right hand.
00:54:36Right hand again.
00:54:38All double combinations and ending up with left and right.
00:54:42Murphy was cooking, and especially the right hand was landing with efficiency.
00:54:46And that's just one of the exchanges.
00:54:48Bobby, take a look at the second one.
00:54:50You know, as he comes to the end of the round, he's doing it again.
00:54:52He's pushing him back.
00:54:53And the champion's standing, too, straight up on the ropes.
00:54:55Look at his head's up.
00:54:56His head's in the air.
00:54:57Right hand, left foot.
00:54:58Murphy's not punching big.
00:54:59Quick and accurate.
00:55:00What an interesting round.
00:55:02That last round was round A.
00:55:04Gonzalez controlled the first minute.
00:55:06Then Murphy dominated the second minute.
00:55:08And the third was even until a late Murphy flurry caught Gonzalez on the ropes.
00:55:13We are into round nine for the WBC lightweight title.
00:55:17The champion, Gonzalez, in the black and the challenger, Murphy, in the red.
00:55:21Well, Murphy should have gotten an injection of adrenaline from that round because he was looking good.
00:55:26He was cooking.
00:55:27He's got two points taken away from the champion.
00:55:30And you know what?
00:55:30This stuff is right here for him to take.
00:55:32He can take the championship.
00:55:34Unless we got some bizarre night in Vegas, this is up for grabs.
00:55:38Peter C. Gonzalez now looking a little more desperate, chasing Murphy, literally running after.
00:55:43Murphy in very cocky fashion with his hands down low, dancing around.
00:55:50Gonzalez digging to the body.
00:55:52He's at low blow points.
00:55:53It's up in rounds two and six.
00:55:56Yeah, Bobby, but you call it exactly right in that.
00:55:59Up before that, he looked like he'd read the last page of the script.
00:56:01He knows how this is going to end up.
00:56:02He's going to knock the guy.
00:56:03Now he looks desperate.
00:56:04Now he's, uh-oh, I'm going to start fighting some.
00:56:06This could be getting away.
00:56:08Much more desperate.
00:56:09Gonzalez has 29 knockouts and 37 victories.
00:56:14He's in jeopardy of losing his WBC lightweight title and his first fight in 38 bouts.
00:56:22Against an unheralded fighter.
00:56:23Good right hook there by Gonzalez that landed.
00:56:27Now the quickness of the hands of Gonzalez, but the unflappable Murphy standing right in there.
00:56:33Here's where Murphy gives away the rounds, just not firing back, not landing the combinations, waiting, slipping, trying to throw one big haymaker.
00:56:39He can't do that.
00:56:40He's got to work.
00:56:41Yeah, it's as if he was so satisfied with that last round, he didn't have to do anything this time, just rest a little bit.
00:56:46And that's bad.
00:56:47Particularly, yes, against the champion in Las Vegas.
00:56:50We all know how difficult it is to win a decision.
00:56:52I don't care how many points have been deducted against the champion in Las Vegas.
00:56:56Best way is to put him on the canvas.
00:56:59Well, at least fight with that ferocity that he was showing there.
00:57:01Right now, he's, like, taking the whole round off.
00:57:04He has nothing, nothing.
00:57:08And it might well be that between the body shots and that big, exhaustive campaign that he launched there that he was getting tired.
00:57:14But he needs a round off.
00:57:17A relatively inactive round here for the challenger, Lamar Murphy.
00:57:23Losing that fire and spirit that we saw earlier as the champion continues to pour in, go to the body.
00:57:30Oh, boy.
00:57:31Was that a low blow, Bobby?
00:57:32It's a good thing the referee was on the other side.
00:57:35Whoa.
00:57:35Mitch Halpern did not see it.
00:57:37We did.
00:57:38Now, Murphy again, going to the head.
00:57:39Left uppercut.
00:57:41Let's see some more.
00:57:42Let's see.
00:57:44I've heard he has not stopped throwing to the body.
00:57:47He's still whipping those punches in there.
00:57:48He's a well-trained fighter, Bobby.
00:57:50He got him this far.
00:57:51He's going to bend it.
00:57:57Win it, win it.
00:58:01Well, this event is being televised to around 90 countries, six continents.
00:58:07Here's the Spanish broadcast with Renato Morphy, John Gonzalez, and Ricardo Lopez.
00:58:14The WBC strawweight champ.
00:58:17There's Ricardo, who is watching very...
00:58:20Is that what you call a bash closely?
00:58:22He should be in Hollywood.
00:58:24Sort of cute.
00:58:27Ricardo Lopez, the WBC strawweight champion.
00:58:31Well, the arena is beginning to fill up.
00:58:33They're expecting 16,000 or 17,000.
00:58:37They've had to add seats here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, as they eagerly anticipate
00:58:44the return of Mike Tyson coming up after the Selden-Hipp WBA heavyweight championship.
00:58:50He just said, in this round is where you win the championship.
00:59:01This corner has just told Gonzalez it's still up for grabs.
00:59:04In this round is where you win your championship.
00:59:07Well, Ferdi, I have this fight pretty much dead even right now, and these last three rounds
00:59:10make or break either one.
00:59:11Absolutely well.
00:59:13It is close, and we still got the third element, Mitch, who could just disqualify him, and that
00:59:18would be horrendous.
00:59:20Round 10, scheduled for 12 for the WBC lightweight championship.
00:59:26Miguel Angel Gonzalez, I think with a lot more than he bargained for against the unheralded
00:59:32but undefeated challenger, Lamar Cochise Murphy.
00:59:35Well, at this point, I have the champion at 85-84, and they split those two rounds, and
00:59:40it is going to be interesting to watch the scoring in this.
00:59:45But if it's work, if they judge by work, then you've got to give it to Gonzalez.
00:59:49He's outworked Lamar.
00:59:50Lamar has stood still, like he's doing that in the last round in this one.
00:59:54Gonzalez is popping that jab, and coming around with the overhand right.
00:59:59No knockdown to this fight.
01:00:01Now back comes Murphy, but as you pointed out, Bob, I just have to wonder how much power
01:00:07is behind those Murphy punches, because they don't seem to be having that much effect on
01:00:10Gonzalez.
01:00:11They look good, but you don't know how hard they are.
01:00:13But he's not even totally on the ground with some of them.
01:00:14Stevie's leaping and just jabbing a right hand from an awkward stance, not even a good,
01:00:18solidly thrown one from the textbook position.
01:00:21Just quick in there, but not hard.
01:00:24From the folks in the Bob Euchre seats that pay $200, I guess, looks pretty good.
01:00:28Now Murphy can't take the rest of the round off like he has in the past.
01:00:54Previous rounds, he throws nice combinations, nice flurries, and then act as if he had to
01:00:58do nothing for the rest of the round.
01:00:59He can't do that.
01:01:01Well, he's doing it right now.
01:01:03Under a minute remaining in the 10th round, Benny Collins, who spent three years in the
01:01:07amateurs with Lamar Murphy, yelling from Murphy's corner, do the work.
01:01:10There's hardly anything left in Gonzalez's punches either, Bobby.
01:01:16Those two are not hard.
01:01:18This is not a man I could see taking who you'll say for Travis down at all.
01:01:21I am sorry.
01:01:22He's got a wake-up call if he thinks he can take that.
01:01:25Maybe in a year.
01:01:28Maybe in a year.
01:01:29Maybe in two.
01:01:30And that would be because Travis gets very, very, very old.
01:01:32Low blow again by Gonzalez and not seen by Mitch Halpert, or he let it go.
01:01:40You saw the expression on Murphy's face.
01:01:41Murphy on the attack.
01:01:43Mitch was right behind Lamar Murphy.
01:01:45He couldn't see that.
01:01:46Lamar Murphy now taking it out on the champion.
01:01:48I think it might have occurred to Halpert, too, that he's painted himself in a box.
01:01:52If he goes to go for that next one, he is in a box.
01:01:55Next disqualification.
01:01:56Come on!
01:01:58Come on!
01:01:59Come on!
01:01:59Come on!
01:01:59You shaking your head, but he's still doing it, bruh.
01:02:06You get the shit right, Murph.
01:02:09All right?
01:02:09Get it right, bruh.
01:02:10Because you shaking your head.
01:02:12You ain't doing shit.
01:02:13You saying, oh, you looking for the ref to help you, bruh.
01:02:15Nobody ain't going to help you.
01:02:16Nobody ain't going to help you.
01:02:18Help yourself, bruh.
01:02:19All right?
01:02:20Help yourself.
01:02:22Be tired of this shit, Murph.
01:02:23You need it.
01:02:24You need it.
01:02:25You understand what I'm saying?
01:02:26You got to fucking work.
01:02:27You got to work.
01:02:28That's why he's hitting you low, bruh.
01:02:29That's why he's doing all this dirty shit.
01:02:30He is tired.
01:02:31That motherfucker's dead on his feet.
01:02:33All right?
01:02:33Let's take a look at this work.
01:02:35Now, as Bobby says, these punches are coming from every which way, but they're not hard.
01:02:39And he is also getting hammered.
01:02:41As you can see from that vantage shot, Gonzalez shot a right hand that landed right on the jaw.
01:02:45They're exchanging punches, but neither are throwing anything good.
01:02:48Look at it from over at Bobby.
01:02:49From the overhead, you can see his feet.
01:02:51You look at Murphy's feet.
01:02:52They're not really planted.
01:02:53He's just jumping around.
01:02:54He's sliding across the floor.
01:02:55Punches are grazing shots at best.
01:02:57They're not solid.
01:02:57They're quick, and they're annoying, but not big punches.
01:03:00This is uncharted territory for the challenger, Lamar Murphy, fighting past the 10th round
01:03:05for the first time.
01:03:06And this is 19th fight.
01:03:07Comes off a good round, does Murphy, as we head into the championship round.
01:03:12Round 11.
01:03:13Come on, baby.
01:03:14Come on, Murphy.
01:03:14You gotta go, baby.
01:03:16Let him, baby.
01:03:16This is for the WBC Lightweight Championship.
01:03:19Good left hook there by Murphy that landed.
01:03:21Gonzalez comes right back.
01:03:23Good.
01:03:24Digging to the ribs once again.
01:03:26And Mitch Halpern has to dive into the tube.
01:03:30And he's going to have a little discussion.
01:03:33Come on, come on.
01:03:34Come on, let's go.
01:03:35Gonzalez claiming he got hit in the back and ahead.
01:03:38I wonder if there's ever been a double disqualification.
01:03:41Ha!
01:03:42Ha!
01:03:43If it happens, it'll happen in Las Vegas.
01:03:45What is that, a technical draw?
01:03:47Don't even bring it up.
01:03:51Lamar's fighting with much more real and much more excitement.
01:03:53His corners told him and told him hard.
01:03:55Nobody can help you but yourself.
01:03:57Don't look at the referee.
01:03:58Do it yourself.
01:03:59This is where that experience counts, Steve.
01:04:00This is that championship quality that many fighters try to get
01:04:04but can't seem to get a handle on.
01:04:06What to do in the last two rounds.
01:04:08When and where to pick your spots and unload.
01:04:10We talked about this going into the fight with you.
01:04:12A two-time world champion knows the feeling.
01:04:15And we also brought out the point that Gonzalez has the heart,
01:04:18the will of a champion.
01:04:19He knows when it really counts.
01:04:22Let it go!
01:04:22Let it go!
01:04:22Let it go!
01:04:25Let it go, Murph!
01:04:26Hey, stop watching.
01:04:26Stop watching.
01:04:27Sit back.
01:04:27Sit back.
01:04:28A busy Mitch Helper.
01:04:29Again, has to break the two up.
01:04:34And you can see the exhaustion.
01:04:36Both very tired midway through the 11th round.
01:04:39Now both beginning to lean on each other.
01:04:41Oh, good.
01:04:41Right hook there by Gonzalez.
01:04:43That tag.
01:04:44The challenger, Murphy, right in the jaw.
01:04:46Murphy kept coming.
01:04:47The punches that Gonzalez was throwing are not well set.
01:04:50They're not big punches.
01:04:51They don't stop Murphy, that's for sure.
01:04:53But then again, when Murphy gets there, he doesn't deliver anything big either.
01:04:57Murphy just keeps coming forward.
01:05:02Good head move by Murphy to elude those shots by Gonzalez.
01:05:05And Murphy once again coming straight ahead.
01:05:08He landed with a left hook, did Murphy?
01:05:10You know, I'm an equally big fan of Ricardo Lopez, as I am of Luis Cesar Chavez.
01:05:16And pound for pound, this fighter's not better than either of the two.
01:05:19Well, at least not here tonight.
01:05:21Well, he's got a tough nut in front of him, too.
01:05:24And he's a tough kid.
01:05:25Lamar Murphy from the overtime in Miami is tough.
01:05:28And look at this flurry by Murphy.
01:05:31He's got Gonzalez against the ropes.
01:05:34Murphy just wailing away left, right.
01:05:37Murphy's letting his hunger take over.
01:05:39His hunger for that title.
01:05:40He is pouring it on.
01:05:42And this is what he needs to do to steal around, and he's stealing it,
01:05:44because that was good, good action by Murphy.
01:05:46And he's still there.
01:05:47A left hook by Murphy.
01:05:48What an assault.
01:05:49Then he digs to the rib.
01:05:51All of his repertoire being shown here.
01:05:53Ten seconds in the round.
01:06:07Man, want to finish that round.
01:06:09That one, Murphy, that round, and things are getting interesting again.
01:06:15All right, let's go to the blue corner.
01:06:18We need the last round.
01:06:19We need the last round.
01:06:21You need a fucking breaking up inside.
01:06:23Let's go for it here.
01:06:24Fuck it up, baby.
01:06:24You got it.
01:06:25Last round.
01:06:25Last round.
01:06:26May I say something?
01:06:29That's the difference between the ghetto and the very few.
01:06:36This is the last round.
01:06:39It's up to you.
01:06:40You've got to go from the distance.
01:06:41This is a championship.
01:06:42You've got to go at your distance at your place.
01:06:45Let's take a look at that action where Lamar won that round
01:06:49and brings this fight into range for Lamar.
01:06:52It is still touch and go as we come to the end
01:06:55and much heavier punches and much more damage being done by Lamar Murphy.
01:07:01Excellent action by Lamar Murphy.
01:07:03Well, here we go.
01:07:08The 12th and final round for the WVC lightweight title.
01:07:12Again, Gonzalez showing the respect and then going right at the head of Lamar Murphy.
01:07:17Gonzalez was in trouble in several of his title defenses, but he always found a way to win.
01:07:22And he's 37-0, 29 knockouts.
01:07:25And Gonzalez hasn't shown that he can't connect yet with a big punch here.
01:07:30And Murphy showing he has the heart of a champion, too.
01:07:34Remember what happened here last week with Vincent Pettway and Paul Vate?
01:07:38I had Vate and Ware head and all three judges had Pettway head by a round.
01:07:42So right now, my best guess is the champion is a couple of points ahead and can't lose this fight.
01:07:46Yeah.
01:07:48I have my head by one, and it could be a draw, but I doubt it.
01:07:51I mean, it could be.
01:07:52I guess the lesson that we all learned from that Pettway-Vate fight is if there's any indecision,
01:08:01if you're not sure, just go for it.
01:08:04Go, I mean, finish strong.
01:08:05Yep, that's almost the definition of championship fighting and championship heart.
01:08:09The guy that goes out in the field.
01:08:10Here he goes.
01:08:11Look at that.
01:08:11He's going at it right here.
01:08:13Lamar Murphy landing to the head of Gonzalez.
01:08:17This is where Lamar Murphy has won his round, pushing the champion to the corner,
01:08:21and take advantage of his lack of speed and his inability to get out of the way of Murphy's punching.
01:08:26There's a crisp left hook by Gonzalez to the head of Murphy.
01:08:31Murphy standing right in there showing a terrific chin.
01:08:36Halfway through the final round for the title.
01:08:47Murphy showing more energy than Gonzalez here in the last round.
01:08:51Gonzalez looking worn out.
01:08:56Murphy's doing what he has to do is to look fresh, look hard, punching harder there.
01:09:01Neither one of them are hurting each other, but the champion looks weary, and his punches are nothing.
01:09:07Less than a minute to go in the final round.
01:09:09And Lamar Murphy showing the ring generalship.
01:09:14He is dictating the pace.
01:09:18Well, those two rounds as they took those points away now figure very, very big.
01:09:22But here comes Gonzalez beginning to open up.
01:09:24But Gonzalez there, landed a nice combination.
01:09:27He stayed off the ropes.
01:09:28He's back at the ropes.
01:09:28He took a step forward and dove into Lamar Murphy with punches as opposed to just keeping his head straight up on the ropes where he was getting killed.
01:09:36Gonzalez in almost desperate fashion here going right back at Murphy.
01:09:40But Murphy very wisely tying Gonzalez up whenever Gonzalez gets loose.
01:09:44Trying to control the fight.
01:09:4620 seconds and counting in the final round.
01:09:50And a strong finish here for Murphy.
01:09:52He tries to keep it going.
01:09:57Gonzalez pressed up against the ropes.
01:09:58Now he backs off.
01:10:00Five seconds to go in the championship fight.
01:10:03And you'll hear a roar from the crowd.
01:10:05Oh, Gonzalez with some dirty tactics hitting after the bell.
01:10:12Well, it's been that kind of a night for Gonzalez.
01:10:15A low blow festival against him.
01:10:19Well, those points that are taken away are going to be of significant impact on this decision.
01:10:26Unless I'm very wrong.
01:10:28This is very close.
01:10:29I have it a draw.
01:10:29Bobby, I think you have it one point for the champion.
01:10:32What have you got?
01:10:33I think I have the one point for Murphy.
01:10:34But I'll tell you what, right now it's so difficult to tell the two points.
01:10:37I think with a swing, I thought the champion won the fight.
01:10:39But with the points taken away, I thought it was off the fight.
01:10:42And Gonzalez ends the fight the way he started it on his knees, praying.
01:10:45And he may need a lot of help.
01:10:47Well, there he, that prayer is indicated.
01:10:49I mean, the first one might not have been necessary, but the second one is necessary.
01:10:53Oh, please give me a Las Vegas decision.
01:10:57Murphy picked off a lot of punches from Gonzalez with his gloves.
01:11:01But if the judges didn't see it that way, Gonzalez retains his title.
01:11:05We shall see in a moment.
01:11:06Omar Minton from Mexico.
01:11:08Dalby Shirley of Las Vegas and Daniel Van Der Weyl of Belgium are the three judges here.
01:11:15Hitch Alvarez had to deduct a couple of points for low blows.
01:11:18Rounds two and six from the champion, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, who is in jeopardy of losing
01:11:23the title and losing his first fight.
01:11:25Murphy also undefeated.
01:11:27And, uh, Lamar Murphy waiting around to see if he has upset the four-to-one favorite,
01:11:35Miguel Angel Gonzalez, for the WBC Lightweight Championship.
01:11:38Gonzalez came in with high praise.
01:11:41All the advertisements.
01:11:42He was the next Julio Cesar Chavez.
01:11:44He was telling everybody he could beat Chavez.
01:11:46He wants Chavez.
01:11:46He wants Oscar de la Hoya.
01:11:48But, uh, quite frankly, he didn't put on the kind of impressive performance that we thought
01:11:54he would here tonight.
01:11:55And that may be because of this man, Lamar Murphy, who is getting all the hugs in the corner.
01:12:01Benny Collins, the trainer.
01:12:04This goes all the way.
01:12:06The distance, 12 rounds.
01:12:07And it is taking quite some time to get the scorecard.
01:12:12Momentarily, we'll throw it up to Jimmy Leonard Jr. to get the official word.
01:12:16But right now, just like you, we stand by.
01:12:19It was very tense up there in the ring, particularly for this man.
01:12:25Miguel Angel Gonzalez, the champion.
01:12:29Looks like Jimmy Leonard Jr. is ready with the decision.
01:12:32So let's throw it up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Leonard Jr.
01:12:34Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of boxing, we have a majority decision.
01:12:44And here are the score totals.
01:12:45Judge at ringside, Daniel Vanderveel scores about 114, 114, even a draw.
01:12:52Judge at ringside, Omar Minkun scores about 117 to 109.
01:12:59And Dolby Shirley scores at 114 to 112 in favor of the winner, still undefeated, and still champion,
01:13:09Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:13:14As you can hear from the crowd reaction, a very unpopular decision, a majority decision,
01:13:20for Miguel Angel Gonzalez, who retains his title, and a fight is breaking out in the ring.
01:13:29It is Bedlam in the ring.
01:13:30The security is running into the ring.
01:13:37People are just wailing away, and we've got ourselves a full-scale riot in the ring.
01:13:43As the security force here at the MGM Grand pounces into the situation.
01:13:48Let's see if we can see who's in the center of it all.
01:13:51That looks like Murphy's trainer.
01:13:53That could be Collins in there.
01:13:59Benny Collins in the center of it.
01:14:00There he is in the blue jacket.
01:14:03And I'm not exactly sure who the combatants were after the fight.
01:14:09I don't know, Steve, but there were a lot of good, clean punches thrown by a lot of different people.
01:14:14Meanwhile, Lamar Murphy playing to the crowd, arousing this crowd even more.
01:14:19They thought that he should have won the fight.
01:14:21You know what?
01:14:21I thought he should have won the fight, too, Steve.
01:14:23The fight was close, but I thought Murphy did the job.
01:14:26I thought he worked and hustled a little more.
01:14:27He gave away a lot of the middle rounds by just not working.
01:14:29But with the points and everything working out, the fouls, I had Murphy winning the fight.
01:14:34But, hey, I've been wrong in Las Vegas many times.
01:14:37What a way to start this fight card.
01:14:44In fact, it is so crowded and so wacky in that ring right now.
01:14:48Jimmy Leonard Jr. is off to my left making the announcement.
01:14:51He wants Lamar Murphy embracing his printer, Benny Collins, who was in the center of that break.
01:14:57I'm not exactly sure who he was going at.
01:14:59Obviously, they are distraught over this decision.
01:15:03What a wild scene here to launch this four-fight card.
01:15:08It has only just begun.
01:15:10Meanwhile, Lamar Murphy is escorted out by his printer, Benny Collins.
01:15:15And hearing it from the crowd, most of whom thought he won this fight.
01:15:20Instead, it's a majority decision to the champion in controversial fashion, Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:15:26Who now goes to 38 and 0.
01:15:28Remains with 29 knockouts.
01:15:29Meanwhile, Murphy loses his first fight as he slips to 18 and 1.
01:15:34Again, you hear the boos from the crowd as they react to Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:15:41An unpopular victory here in Las Vegas tonight.
01:15:43The 24-year-old Gonzalez making his 10th defense of the WBC Lightweight Championship.
01:15:51And he wins it by majority decision.
01:15:53Now 11 and 0 in world title bouts.
01:15:56He took this one the hard way.
01:15:58He had a couple of points, disqualified because of low blows.
01:16:02And he's lucky he didn't get disqualified altogether.
01:16:04Steve, those low blows were plentiful and they just kept on coming.
01:16:08But he would not move off that body attack.
01:16:11Meanwhile, Lamar Murphy unsuccessful in his first world title shot.
01:16:15His first defeat.
01:16:15His record slips to 18 and 1.
01:16:17But most of the fans here, and as you can see, the MGM Grand has just about filled up.
01:16:23Most of the fans thought that Murphy won.
01:16:26So it's one down, three to go.
01:16:28Coming up next, the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
01:16:31As Bruce Shelton makes his first title defense against Joe Hipp here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
01:16:36This ought to be interesting.
01:16:38We're set now for post-fight interviews.
01:16:40Let's go up to the ring of the fight, Dr. Ferdi Pacheco.
01:16:43Okay.
01:16:45Do you know that if they would have given you another warning by the referee,
01:16:55it would have been a disqualification?
01:16:56You lose the title?
01:16:56Yeah, I think the referee was overly on my case.
01:17:12The punches weren't that low.
01:17:13They were to the part that didn't hurt.
01:17:15And so therefore, he thought the referee picked him.
01:17:18Did you think you won the fight?
01:17:19Did you think you won the fight?
01:17:21Yeah, definitely.
01:17:22I think it was very similar.
01:17:23I have to recognize the match very similar.
01:17:26However, the fight was decided in the last rounds, where I forced the fight.
01:17:31I felt that by those points that the referee dropped me, it was supposed to be a bit complicated.
01:17:36And so it was, but if we analyzed the fight, I think I was the one who took the fight,
01:17:42the one who forced the fight all the time.
01:17:43And that in the last rounds, I definitely won the fight.
01:17:47All right.
01:17:48He thinks it was a very close fight.
01:17:50That, uh, the translation being that he thought he won the fight because he won the last rounds
01:17:55and he was the aggressor, and he definitely thought he won the fight.
01:17:58So from this champion to Jim Gray at Rickside.
01:18:04Okay.
01:18:05Thank you very much, Ferdi.
01:18:06Did you feel as though you won the fight, Lamar?
01:18:08Of course.
01:18:08You heard the crowd.
01:18:10You know what I'm saying?
01:18:11You heard the crowd, man.
01:18:12That's all I got to say.
01:18:13I don't got too much to say.
01:18:14Hey, it's just like Chavez and Randall the second time.
01:18:18Everybody knows he won, but hey, he from Mexico, no problem.
01:18:22But, you know, we respect our American people to the back of, and you know what?
01:18:25They did.
01:18:26You feel as though you were cheated by the referees, then?
01:18:28Of course.
01:18:28To judge it.
01:18:29Of course.
01:18:29But, hey, I can take it.
01:18:31You know what I'm saying?
01:18:31I'm a champ.
01:18:32And you avoid it.
01:18:33I'm a champ regardless.
01:18:34Anybody, you take a poll, you take a poll from anybody, and they say Lamar Murphy won the fight.
01:18:38You know it.
01:18:39I know it.
01:18:39Am I right?
01:18:39Do you know it?
01:18:40Randall just by and congratulated you.
01:18:42He's been through this.
01:18:43What did he tell you?
01:18:44I'm the champ.
01:18:45I'm the new champ.
01:18:46You say the champ, keep your head up.
01:18:47Keep your head up.
01:18:47My food chair in front of me.
01:18:48Because you're the champ.
01:18:49So?
01:18:49What about the low blow?
01:18:50The X-Cainal ass?
01:18:51No, it ain't bothering me, but damn.
01:18:53I want the ref to see it, though.
01:18:54You know, if I would have started doing it, he probably would have...
01:18:56He would have disqualified him.
01:18:57You know that.
01:18:58He would have disqualified him.
01:18:59So you obviously won a rematch.
01:19:01Of course.
01:19:01I kept the fight clean.
01:19:02Not only we want a rematch, the people want a rematch.
01:19:07Because that was a hell of a fight.
01:19:08Lamar won it, took it to the distance, and almost knocked him out three times.
01:19:12Am I right?
01:19:13Replay the film.
01:19:15Replay the film.
01:19:16Low blows all through every round.
01:19:18What is the...
01:19:18How rough is this?
01:19:20In the back of my head.
01:19:21In the back of the head.
01:19:21We went in there with a straight fight, and they still cheated.
01:19:26Come on.
01:19:27And then they want to start some records after the fight.
01:19:29Yeah, what happened after the fight?
01:19:31They jumped on my lawyer.
01:19:32They jumped on his lawyer.
01:19:33It's all similar.
01:19:34And similar is going to stand up for his rights.
01:19:36Just like me, I'm going to stand up for my rights.
01:19:38Were you inciting the crowd just a little bit, though?
01:19:40That could have really gotten out of hand.
01:19:42It did.
01:19:42Of course.
01:19:42You heard the crowd when I almost had him out.
01:19:46Of course I incited the crowd.
01:19:47I think the crowd wanted to see more of me.
01:19:49All right.
01:19:49Lamar, congratulations for a great fight.
01:19:51We look forward to the rematch.
01:19:52Steve?
01:19:53All right.
01:19:53Thank you very much, Jim.
01:19:54This crowd is now in a very surly, ornery mood after that first very unpopular decision.
01:20:03Most thought that Lamar Murphy won the fight rather than the champion Miguel Ángel Gonzalez,
01:20:09who took it by a majority of the decisions.
01:20:11Let's take a look back at the chaos in the ring after the actual fight took place.
01:20:16The two camps went at each other.
01:20:18Somebody from the Gonzalez camp, and somebody, I believe it was the trainer there, Benny Collins.
01:20:26There's Benny.
01:20:27Yep, there was Benny.
01:20:28From the Murphy camp, his trainer.
01:20:30And they got each other in a headlock.
01:20:33And then somebody else coming in there from the Murphy camp, as I can tell by the colors of their outfits,
01:20:40and really getting in some shots, Bobby.
01:20:43I'll tell you what.
01:20:43There were some good uppercuts and right hands thrown in this fight.
01:20:46They obviously taught their fighters well because they know what they were doing.
01:20:49Now, the question is, which was the better fight?
01:20:52Well, certainly the fight was a better fight.
01:20:54But for crowd's sake, you know, it's like a hockey game.
01:20:56It's going to be more exciting when regular people and the spectators dive in the ring and start doing it.
01:21:01So a wild start to what we thought would be a long night, and it probably will be with this first fight getting off to a 12-round start.
01:21:12And this crowd just settling in now.
01:21:19All right, let's take a look at some of the action now as we introduce a new addition to our broadcast, the Telestrator.
01:21:24Bobby Ches is at the controls.
01:21:26And, Bobby, take it away.
01:21:28Well, what we have here, Steve, is what was, if the fight was won by Murphy, how he won it, okay?
01:21:33You take a look.
01:21:35You see the ropes here.
01:21:35These are the ropes.
01:21:36This, the champion constantly has his back against the ropes, and he stands straight up.
01:21:40Murphy comes in, throws the punches.
01:21:42He comes in quick, right up the middle, quick, quick, quick, and uppercuts and hooks around.
01:21:46And you watch it.
01:21:47When his back's to the rope and his head is high, those punches are very effective.
01:21:56Now his head goes up in here.
01:21:57You'll see it.
01:21:57See?
01:21:58That's when he's affected.
01:21:59That's when Murphy was doing the job.
01:22:01He kept the champion's head like that up on the ropes.
01:22:03Now, that was only a brief moment, but in the corners, the exact same things was happening.
01:22:07Keeps his head up on the ropes.
01:22:09And that's, I think, I think that's what made the crowd feel that Murphy won.
01:22:13And I'll be honest with you, I thought he won, too.
01:22:18All right.
01:22:18So there's not much more to say.
01:22:20You thought that Murphy won the fight.
01:22:23And what helped Murphy, too, were the two low blows, the points being taken away.
01:22:27More than two low blows, but the point deductions.
01:22:29Oh, certainly more than two low blows.
01:22:30There was at least 10, 15 low blows clean that we could see.
01:22:33But I think with the two points, he was clearly the winner.
01:22:35He took some time off in the middle rounds.
01:22:37His corner knows he did.
01:22:38They were telling him to stop doing that, to do some things, to fight back, to push him.
01:22:41And when he came forward, unbelievably so, he was the stronger, better fighter.
01:22:46I thought the champion's forte was to come forward, Steve, and it just wasn't that way.
01:22:49I agree with you, too.
01:22:50I thought Murphy won the fight.
01:22:52And you can probably just chalk it up to another wild and wacky, controversial Las Vegas decision.
01:22:58We're in Las Vegas, a city like no other.
01:22:59And we're seeing decisions and events like nowhere else.
01:23:03Now, the question is, is this a harbinger of things to come?
01:23:05I mean, we've only just begun, and we haven't even come close to the Tyson fight yet.
01:23:09You know, I don't know, and I don't want to predict.
01:23:12I'm a prognosticator only of the Pugilist again, not anything else that happened.
01:23:16Well, this is the place to be if you can do that.
01:23:18You're an odds maker.
01:23:19All right.
01:23:20Well, Bobby, Mike Tyson is not the only Mike captivating crowd tonight here at the MGM Grand.
01:23:25And earlier, our Jim Gray had a chat with another one who is headlining right here at this big hotel.
01:23:33Guys, thank you very much.
01:23:35I'm joined by a man whose face you probably do not recognize, but whose voice and whose name is extremely recognizable.
01:23:41Michael Crawford, the Phantom of the Opera, who is now starring here at the MGM Grand.
01:23:45Just across the way from the fight, and unfortunately, he can't be with us at the fight tonight
01:23:49because his show is just about ready to begin.
01:23:51The FX show, a spectacular show.
01:23:53But you're a big fight fan.
01:23:54You're sorry you're missing this, aren't you?
01:23:55I am indeed.
01:23:56And so one of the worst contracts I've ever made, working 7.30 and 10.30 shows tonight with all that noise going on next door.
01:24:02I mean, it's very tantalizing.
01:24:04You have a very, very special memory about Mike Tyson, don't you?
01:24:08I do have a special memory.
01:24:10The last time I went to see him fight was in Atlantic City, and I was doing Phantom of the Opera in New York.
01:24:16And I got a new girlfriend, and my makeup girl for Phantom, I thought, I'm going to give him a special treat.
01:24:22We'll go to Atlantic City, see this fight against Sphinx.
01:24:25And Billy Joel got me the tickets, and I was up there, great seats.
01:24:30And I'm sitting down, the bell goes for the first round.
01:24:33I look at the girls, I say, isn't it great that we're here?
01:24:35And I look back, and he's knocked Sphinx out.
01:24:38I didn't see him lay one punch on him.
01:24:40It was, it was, so, and tonight I'm not going to see him.
01:24:43I said, maybe I'm very lucky to him.
01:24:45Hand the squirmer in the eye.
01:24:46Yeah, yeah.
01:24:47You found that out with boxing.
01:24:48Yeah.
01:24:48I understand, however, that you have an opponent for Tyson that you're a trainer.
01:24:52Well, I've got a fella here that could be, well, we could line up for the next opponent.
01:24:58Look at this.
01:25:00He's working in the show here at the MGM, in effects, and he's quite a, well, he's quite a hot fighter.
01:25:07Seems to use his combinations pretty well.
01:25:08Looks like he has a pretty wicked left.
01:25:10Yeah.
01:25:10And if you recognize, I think, you see that?
01:25:13Look.
01:25:13And he's got Don King's haircut, so I think.
01:25:16Spewing fire, he might be ready for Tyson.
01:25:18Michael, it's good to see you.
01:25:19Thanks for joining us.
01:25:20Thank you, Jim.
01:25:21All right, let's go back to ring fast.
01:25:22All right.
01:25:24Well, Michael Crawford, among others, has speculated about Mike Tyson's next opponent.
01:25:28That might be slightly premature.
01:25:31With that, let's go back to Jim Hill.
01:25:33All right, Steve, thank you very much.
01:25:35Well, Ray, when the decision was announced, you just shook your head.
01:25:38You didn't like it any more than the crowd here.
01:25:40Well, I tell you what, Lamar Murphy has nothing to hold his head down about.
01:25:43He fought a magnificent fight.
01:25:45He out-hustled the champion.
01:25:46He out-punched the champion.
01:25:47He was very elusive.
