Transcript
00:00The expansion of Leeds United's Ellen Road Stadium has got the go-ahead, following a vote by councillors.
00:06Leeds City Council gave planning permission for the project, set to boost seating capacity to 53,000 people,
00:13despite some concerns over parking and road safety.
00:16The club proposed to partially demolish and redevelop the grounds' west stand to help meet demand for ticket sales.
00:23The north stand is also set for redevelopment under longer-term plans for the Beeston Stadium.
00:28At a City Plans panel meeting, councillors were told the proposals include a reduction in car travel to the stadium
00:35and increased use of public transport and park-and-ride schemes, but questions were raised over whether that was realistic.
00:43A report to the meeting said the club hoped to host Women's World Cup matches in 2035,
00:48stating that Ellen Road currently falls short of standards for major international tournaments.
00:53The report added that redevelopment is essential to remain competitive with modern stadia in cities like Manchester and Liverpool.
01:02The upgraded stadium could host England Lionesses' matches, inspiring regional participation.
01:08The expansion is set to bring Ellen Road in line with UEFA Category 4 standards,
01:12and seating capacity will increase from the ground's current size of 37,645.
01:18Plans panel members voted to grant planning permission with an 11-to-1 majority.
01:24It means final approval is delegated to the City's Chief Planning Officer, subject to legal agreements.
