00:00What are the fake videos of farmers on social media?

00:08European farmers have ramped up their protests against the Mercosur Free Trade Agreement with

00:13South America in recent months, triggering a surge of misleading and fake videos.

00:18Many of the video's captions say that they are AI-generated. Others have the Sora watermark,

00:24which is OpenAI's image and video generator. But when they are reposted by other accounts

00:29these disclaimers risk getting lost. But if you look closely, there are also AI indicators.

00:35For example here, the letters E and their fonts on police shields are inconsistent.

00:40A string of other videos have specifically imitated French farmers, who as well as being

00:45opposed to the Mercosur deal, have been angry at the implementation of culling measures

00:49aimed at curbing the spread of lumpy skin disease among cows.

00:59This video shows a farmer upset at the culling of hundreds of cows in the French department of

01:06Ariège, a real event which took place in December. Police had to intervene after farmers attempted

01:12to block access to a farm to prevent culling. So although the testimony and video could seem

01:17plausible, it's in fact AI which you can see here when the cow's backside transforms into its head.

01:23In this instance, the farmer can be seen crying tears of blood which do not roll down his face.

01:35The motivation for generating this kind of fake content is to attract clicks,

01:40which can be monetized if the clips go viral.
