00:00but let's get started i would say it was an all-time classic college football playoff game
00:05but considering the college football playoffs are only a few years old i don't know that we
00:08can actually do that but it was fantastic last night's game in the second half five different
00:12lead changes ending at the end of the game when the university of miami's quarterback
00:17carson beck ran in the game winning touchdown and wouldn't you know the hurricanes are headed
00:22to the national championship game they will play in less than 10 days on a monday night
00:28in the stadium that they play their home games as they defeated mississippi it was a wild back
00:35and forth affair lots of offense in the second half lots of mistakes ironically by the university
00:40of miami to still come out on top but they certainly will take it their national championship
00:45appearance first time in almost 20 years here's mario cristobal on overcoming mistakes to get to
00:51the title game no honestly i don't um football isn't complicated people are and i think when
00:56you start jumping off sides and get some of these pre-stamp penalties you complicate things for
01:00yourself i think it's the simplicity of these guys they know exactly who they are and they know what
01:07it took to get us to this point and they were not settling for getting to this point just to get here
01:13want to know was the objective and they weren't going to let anything get in the way so all they
01:17did was do what they do every single day on a green tree practice field and did it to uh to an elite
01:22level to finish the game um and uh again i can't uh speak more highly or proudly enough of them and
01:30their resilience man i mean what what an unbelievable year and it was never easy you know it was never
01:34perfect there was a lot of ups and downs there's a lot of adversity that not only i faced individually
01:38but that we faced as a team and we really banded together and showed that we believe in connection
01:45that we don't just fake it that this this team is really a family and if our team really wasn't like
01:50that i don't know if this win happens tonight you know we really band together we believed in each
01:55other and we never flinched in the face of adversity meanwhile storybook season for mississippi comes to
02:00a close of course lane kiffin left the team as head coach to go to lsu pete golding took over from
02:06that point and they made a heck of a run coming up basically just about you know 30 seconds when you
02:12think about it probably short of getting to the championship game so here are the silver linings
02:16from golding the new mississippi head coach i can't tell you how proud i am of this group
02:21um they never panicked they never flinch they're led by special young men two of them are sitting up
02:27here and you know i remember looking at them at halftime and just looking in their eyes and they
02:31didn't panic and we had been here before um and we just uh we didn't make enough plays when we needed
02:38to um from a coach's standpoint we got to find a way to put them in better position uh late in the
02:43game and close it out but uh super proud of this group uh this is a group that created this legacy
02:48for this team and an expectation for this program that what i told them in the locker room that we're
02:53pissed off in a semi-final game because we feel like we should have won the game because we didn't
02:56play our best and we didn't coach our best just for us to have the season that we had it's just
03:00you know unbelievable and you know we can't do it without tj or anyone else and the offensive line
03:06and pg and just everyone involved i mean i mean to see kewan do what he does is just special and
03:11i mean he's probably the best running back i've ever played with um you know is you can do
03:16whatever and you can you know achieve things that you wouldn't even think that you could achieve
03:20and this year has taught me that and i've just learned a lot and i've created a lot of good
03:24relationships and connections you know throughout the season and i'm truly grateful for that
03:28campus wants to play another season of college football i got news for you probably could go in
03:33the nfl draft to be picked high we'll see if he changes his mind all right tonight indiana takes on
03:37oregon the winner of that will play the university of miami in the national championship game in miami
03:42gardens at hard rock stadium indiana three and a half point favorites tonight against oregon that's
03:47the current line as you can see there the total is 48 and a half we'll get a pick of course coming up
03:52from bill bender of sporting news meanwhile the miami dolphins don't have a new head coach but they do
03:57have a gm today it was made official the dolphins are plucking john eric sullivan away from the green
04:03bay packers to be their new general manager and he will be responsible for hiring the new head coach
04:08there are reports that say that troy aikman a consultant had a lot to do with that hiring there
04:13roma dunze will be back for the chicago bears when they take on the green bay packers saturday night
04:17we'll preview the game coming up in the sound off ohio state's linebacker arvel reese has decided to
04:23enter the nfl draft and some tough news from the world of snowboarding and the olympics as chloe kim
04:30said thursday that she took a fall in training and dislocated her shoulder which threatens her
04:35chance to play in the upcoming olympics she's trying to become the first action sports athlete
04:39to win three straight gold medals but we'll see if the injury doesn't allow her to do that have to
04:44have a decision coming up here in february all right in the nba last night minnesota beats cleveland
04:48131 to 122 so they win they cover the spread nice game for anthony edwards as well as edwards becomes
04:55one of the youngest players to get 10 000 career points lebron and durant of course ahead of him
05:00both are headed to the hall of fame here's chris finch on the distribution the teams did a great
05:05job getting the ball to everybody just making the right play you know keeping it simple um you know
05:10ant with nine assists julius with eight that's always going to be a recipe for success for us
05:15uh but i thought they did a really good job of you know kind of drawing a crowd and getting off of it
05:20and guys stepped up and made shots um you know just yeah we we turned it over i thought a little
05:27too much that we haven't been turned over um first half but you know in the second half we
05:32we only had seven but uh for a long time there until the till the end we we really only had two or
05:39three turnovers and in the big run that we had so that was key you know i thought we did a pretty
05:44good job getting in the paint and you know getting two feet in the paint and um maybe didn't finish as
05:51great as we wanted to um and then again 11 i think we're 11 for 33 from from three um it's just
05:59got to shoot it better indiana pacers yesterday won a game i know it feels rare they beat the hornets
06:07114 to 112 hornets were four and a half point favorites rick carlisle by the way becomes the
06:1211th coach in history to reach 1 000 wins joined some very elite company and carlisle weighed in on
06:19that after the game i'm pretty sure all the guys on the list are guys that i know well um you know i
06:26came in as a head coach in 2001 when a lot of those guys were still coaching and coached against a lot
06:32of them for many years and uh i have such great respect for all of them um you know lenny wilkins
06:39who recently passed was the former president of the coaches association before i took over in 05
06:45i i've passed the torch to jb bickerstaff who is now the new president as of eight days ago
06:51and um and he's going to be an amazing leader for us you know riley phil jackson um george carl
07:00you know uh rick adam and these guys are all they weren't just competitors they became friends of
07:06mine over the years um and i've some doc rivers who's right up in the hall of fame ballots it's
07:12time to get him in the hall of fame and um so hey i i'm just very blessed jazz beat the mavericks
07:19116 to 114 they snap a five-game losing streak will hardy and coach of the jazz happy with that outcome
07:27our defense tonight i thought was great um we had some really long stretches where we guarded the
07:32paint well the fourth quarter they only had four paint points um and then we only had nine turnovers
07:37and you end up winning the possession battle and that gives you a chance to win on nights when you're
07:44not your best in terms of shot making and i think it's a good example for our group of things that we
07:51can try to focus on every single night so that we're not just reliant on shots going in i don't
07:57think it's tough i think it's just uh that's our norm um with injuries or sickness uh we lose guys next
08:04guy up and so just understanding i thought ryan did a good job for us caleb did a good job clay did
08:11a great job you know his 900th game uh come off the bench and gave us a spark so you're talking to be
08:17one of those places for cooper where he just knows that this is a building he plays well yeah he does
08:21play well uh i thought he was you know it was great um he got great looks uh made some some plays
08:28for his teammates again he was he was big for us offensively and uh he got us going there in that
08:33second quarter right before half welcome back to newswire here on sports grit sam mcquillan is with
08:37us from legal sports report with the very latest on prediction markets partners etc and some sports
08:42gaming news as well sam great to have you back here as we close out the week let's get started
08:47and discuss prediction markets we know a team in the national hockey league started a partnership
08:52last week which sort of led to i think our next story now prediction markets at least in the nhl
08:58seem to be okay for the time being i'm noticing nothing from the nba nothing from major league baseball
09:06nothing from the national football league they already have their partners here so why can the nhl
09:11jump into this and some of the other uh sports cannot for the time being
09:15yeah it's a really good question craig we now have two major nhl teams uh with the chicago blackhawks
09:23first partnering with calci and now the new york rangers partnering with polymarket uh to partner
09:28with these prediction mark uh prediction market apps which as you mentioned craig uh the other
09:34leagues have pretty much come out against at least so far you had uh back uh last year the nba
09:40and the mlb both wrote letters to the cftc basically telling them that these prediction
09:45markets which exist outside of the framework of normal sports betting apps which both leagues
09:51are obviously partnered with uh calling them sort of a threat to the game's integrity because they lack
09:56all these you know safeguards that sports books are supposed to have and are required of sports books
10:02and is one of the reasons that we have legalization and a whole regulation process
10:06but the nhl now with two teams partnering uh with these apps the latest uh polymarket and the league
10:13itself i should mention is actually partnered with uh polymarket and calci as well the whole nhl so
10:19very different when you have the mlb and the nba and the nfl as well has come out against them saying
10:25that you know we're going to kind of wait and see what happens here could be a good opportunity but the
10:29nhl obviously diving in i would have to think it's you know one of the ways the nhl is looking to
10:34expand it's obviously you know not as popular a league uh as those other leagues or um uh you
10:40certainly think of it after you think of the nba or the nfl um so it'll be interesting to see kind
10:46of how these partnerships first start with these teams um and you know the rangers are obviously
10:50owned by the same guy who owns the knicks uh you don't know if you know working with the one team
10:56or group organization uh will bleed out to other things but you know in the meantime you have
11:00companies like kyle sheer crossing over a billion dollars in volume every week with most of it on
11:05sports you've had fanduel and draft kings launching their own prediction market products as well you
11:12had companies like espn interested in getting in the space you now have dow jones which owns the
11:18wall street journal partnering with polymarket as well this past week so these partnerships are becoming
11:24more common especially in the news space and now in the sports space as well it's just kind of
11:28another way uh these prediction markets are seeking to legitimize themselves as you know lawsuits and
11:35regulation kind of slodges and you know we wait for that to kind of all play out um you know it's
11:40just another kind of example of how they're kind of trying to work with these teams and organizations
11:44to you know create higher visibility and kind of legitimize themselves at rivers right now trying
11:51to survive in the sports betting space sam as honestly a lot of the sports betting operators
11:57are i mean it can't be good for a lot of these let's say fifth place sixth place sports betting
12:04operators that prediction markets are just in this business and jumping so far ahead quite frankly i'm
12:09surprised that those sports betting operators have not pushed back on the prediction markets at all
12:14or maybe they have we just don't know
12:16yeah it's a really interesting point you have companies like bet rivers uh they've been aligned
12:23with caesars and bet mgm is kind of fighting these prediction markets while companies like draft kings
12:29and fanduel which have historically been at odds with those other you know legacy kind of casino operators
12:34they kind of said you know screw it we'll join in and create our own prediction markets if this is
12:39going to be the case and it is interesting when you talk about fifth sixth place operators bet rivers which
12:43we'll talk about in a sec uh not even in that list they're outside of the top 10 in sports betting
12:49app downloads this entire year so um even smaller than that this week they had to raise their minimum
12:55wager size in illinois from uh one dollar to five dollars which we've seen a number of sports betting
13:02apps in the state do responding to the illinois tax hikes over the past years with either adding a 25 to 50
13:10cent uh fee per bet onto every bet which fanduel and draft kings did and then you know bet rivers as
13:17well so it now has the second highest minimum in the state behind circa which is marketed to you know
13:24uh sports bettors who want to put down more money and avoid being limited and get better lines that
13:29sort of thing less of the casual better so pretty notable that bet rivers would kind of you know join
13:35that landscape when bet rivers itself has been wanting to attract the casual better uh but the
13:40the story here is the illinois sports books have really been hit hard by all these tax hikes and you
13:46know just this past week you had chicago add another tax hike on top of it as well where now they have to
13:50pay a 40 tax rate for the highest books and as well as the the percent the the per bet sent fee as well
13:59as a 10.25 tax from chicago um since the new taxes were all enacted uh the bets on bett rivers are
14:06actually down 32 percent year over year that's just in the months of september and october combined
14:12because those are the only months uh we have available uh with the tax rate and the information
14:16um and bets overall are down 16 percent so bett rivers basically hit twice as hard as the rest of
14:23the market again trying to survive in a really tough landscape uh we'll see if it changes its minimum
14:28rate it's not necessarily set um depending on what the new chicago tax does to its books
14:34and numbers it could go up it could go down we could even see bett rivers leave the state so
14:38i agree with your point craig it'll be really interesting to see what these smaller kind of
14:42tier two or tier three sports betting operators do in the face of these enormous tax hikes and
14:47obviously in the face of new competition from prediction markets as well one way that some of the
14:53operators can make money is through i gaming over at legalsportsreport.com you can read this
14:58story about virginia trying to get them back on the table certainly looking for other options sam
15:04yeah virginia is one of the numbers of states that opened their legislative sessions this week
15:11weighing a new i gaming bill virginia like many other states new york indiana has pretty much tried
15:16for years or people in virginia have tried for years to legalize these online casino games
15:21blackjack uh slot these things that you mentioned craig really are where uh the sports books can
15:28actually make money you know the sports book typically holds about 10 to 12 percent on you know
15:33sports bets and then when it's with online casino games it's much closer to 50 percent 60 percent so
15:39this is a thing that the legacy operators have really wanted legalized for years it's taken
15:43a very long time it's only legal in seven states but now coming back up in virginia it got pretty close
15:49last year actually uh but just ran into time constraints which are always going to have
15:53uh in a state legislature uh in the federal legislature for that matter uh you know i gaming
15:58might seem like a popular topic with constituents or uh lawmakers but at the end of the day they have a ton
16:05of other things they have to manage as well so virginia now weighing it maine just legalized it uh this
16:10morning in fact uh so we now have eight states where it's going to be legal so we're starting to see
16:14momentum with i gaming uh you gotta wonder if that's something that sports books will be able
16:18to push more successfully now that they have prediction markets as a threat now that they have
16:23taken care of kind of sweepstakes with a bunch of bills throughout the legislatures uh over the
16:28past year as well um and you have quite frankly have less states to focus on legalizing sports
16:32betting um you know you have 38 39 states now a lot of their lobbying time can be spent more on
16:37i gaming which again is the real end game uh for the sports betting operators uh beyond prediction
16:42markets beyond fantasy beyond whatever whatever else we're going to talk about uh throughout this
16:47these next couple months yeah sam i noticed today on social media you did post uh just a quick post
16:53about how many folks are downloading sports betting apps and prediction markets as well uh i i know you
16:59just did this so i don't want to throw something out there that you can't handle but i did see
17:04uh fanduel draft kings one and two one of the other i saw calci number three isn't that kind of
17:09telling a story as to where people are headed it's definitely telling the story as to what people
17:14are downloading and what's really capturing interest uh calci now third with 3.4 million
17:20downloads during the nfl season behind draft kings and fanduel it's definitely telling the story that
17:25people are interested you know polymarket isn't fully relaunched yet so you don't know what those
17:29kind of numbers would look like um and it'll be really interesting going forward to see you know
17:32it's now third place does it keep that spot can it retain can it actually make money doing this
17:36as opposed to just getting people to download the app um and become a really popular kind of
17:41marketing or social media presence uh you got to wonder how much money they're actually making
17:46um and whether or not of course they're here to stay with all the cftc stuff pending so
17:50um interesting development but we'll keep watching it for the rest of the year for sure
17:53sam thanks for coming on have a great weekend appreciate it you too thanks greg
