Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says the government is gathering record levels of data on potholes.Ministers have pledged to double spending on fixing roads across the UK.

00:00so interestingly it's a pretty ridiculous situation i inherited this situation when i
00:04walked into the department for transport there isn't data that has been collected
00:12on potholes and there isn't actually even a definition of a pothole so what we are doing
00:18is we are collecting data in a way that hasn't been done before this government is doubling the
00:24amount of money that we are spending on roads maintenance 7.3 but you're not telling us
00:33and so look what the the map that we have produced uh the way in which we worked out how to
00:40categorize different local authority areas was based upon a number of factors the condition of
00:45the road the amount of investment that is being put in and the extent to which the local authority
00:52in question is using best practice and providing good value for money um for the taxpayer
