Affiliate program, referral offer, and partner offer are different

TermWhat it meansWhat to check
Public affiliate programA standing program that pays affiliates under published termsThe official program page, commission terms, and application process
OpenAI referral or promotionA limited offer shown by OpenAI in email or in ChatGPTThe exact offer, account eligibility, reward, and expiry
Third-party partner or app offerA separate company’s marketing arrangementWho runs it, what product it covers, and who pays the reward

OpenAI’s promotional subscriptions and free-trial invites FAQ says eligible users may receive a limited number of invitation links for a free trial or promotional subscription. The details, including invite count, duration, eligibility, and restrictions, are provided in the relevant email or product experience. That is a campaign, not an open affiliate scheme.

What OpenAI currently documents

OpenAI has published several types of limited referral promotion. For example, its ChatGPT Free referral campaign runs from August 18 through September 17, 2026 for selected Free users in India, Indonesia, and Mexico. The stated reward is temporary higher Free-plan usage limits, not cash, an API balance, or a transferable benefit.

Its ChatGPT Desktop referral promotions also say that eligibility and benefits can vary by plan, workspace, region, and promotion. A reward is granted only after the invitee completes the required action and passes the required checks. The help page explicitly says referral benefits are not API credits unless the offer says so, and cannot be sold or transferred.

Those official programs should not be used to infer a commission rate, a permanent eligibility rule, or an offer available to everyone. If no official offer appears in your account or email, do not promise one to an audience.

How to assess a claim about a “ChatGPT affiliate program”

Check five things before putting an offer in a newsletter, landing page, or partner pitch:

  1. The operator: Is the offer from OpenAI, an app developer, a reseller, or an affiliate network?
  2. The official terms: Does an OpenAI page actually call it an affiliate program, or does it describe a promotion or invite?
  3. The benefit: Is it a commission, free trial, usage benefit, discount, or something else?
  4. The conditions: Who is eligible, what must the invitee do, and when does it expire?
  5. The scope: Does it apply to ChatGPT, a particular app, a Business workspace, Codex, or the API?

Avoid copying a commission claim from a comparison site into copy about OpenAI. The source may be describing another product, an old campaign, or its own partner program.

A concrete eesel CLI workflow for partner-copy rules

An eesel content teammate can be operated from the dashboard or the eesel CLI. A content lead can use the terminal, a script can read its JSON output, and a coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor can prepare a review. They all work on the same teammate and workspace.

Suppose a teammate turns a third-party app’s referral offer into the claim, “OpenAI pays affiliates 20%.” First, inspect its standing instructions and recent activity:

Bash
npx @eesel/cli --agent "Content teammate" instructions
npx @eesel/cli --agent "Content teammate" activity

The owner reviews this exact proposed configuration diff against approved primary sources:

Diff
- Describe referral offers using the source supplied in the brief.
+ Describe an OpenAI referral, promotion, partner offer, or affiliate program only with the term used by its primary source. Do not state a commission, eligibility rule, or reward unless that source gives it. If the source is third-party or ambiguous, identify the operator or flag the claim for review.

The documented npx @eesel/cli requires Node.js 18.17+. Sign into the intended workspace and replace “Content teammate” with its actual name. Run npx @eesel/cli instructions --help to find supported update syntax. Use --dry-run to preview a supported write, get the owner’s approval for the exact change, apply it, and read the saved instructions back. Setup and observation commands are free; chat is billed work.

Before a paid chat test, inspect enabled actions and downstream permissions. A prompt asking for “draft copy only” does not remove actions the teammate is already allowed to take. Get the right owner’s approval for the billed test and anything that could have a real downstream effect.

Use fresh conversations. The normal case can supply OpenAI’s official referral campaign terms and ask for a factual summary. The exception case can supply a third-party app’s referral page and ask whether it proves an OpenAI affiliate commission. Do not include the desired rule in either test prompt. Review whether the teammate preserves the source’s scope and flags the unsupported attribution. The native outcome is an accurate, reviewable article brief, not a new referral link or a promise to OpenAI customers.

Use the official offer, not a generic label

If an OpenAI promotional or referral offer appears in your account, read the terms displayed with that offer before sharing it. If you are evaluating a separate app or partner program, describe it as that company’s program unless OpenAI’s own documentation says otherwise.

For a team that needs content rules and sources to stay reviewable, try eesel and keep the claim, the source, and the approval with the teammate that drafts it.

Frequently asked questions

Does OpenAI have a public ChatGPT affiliate program?

The official sources reviewed here describe campaign-specific referral and promotional offers, not a general public affiliate signup with a standard commission schedule. This does not rule out private arrangements or future programs; require a current OpenAI source for any specific commission claim.

Who can receive a ChatGPT referral offer?

Eligibility is decided per campaign. An offer may be limited by account, plan, region, workspace, activity, or other conditions, and not every eligible-looking user will see one.

Can I sell or transfer an OpenAI referral offer?

The ChatGPT Free and Desktop referral terms cited here prohibit selling or transferring the specified rewards or offers. Check the exact official campaign terms before sharing a link; do not assume one campaign’s benefit is transferable to another person or product.

Do referral rewards apply to API usage?

Not by default. OpenAI says a referral benefit applies to the eligible experience described in the offer; it is not an API credit unless the offer explicitly says so.

Should I trust a third-party site that advertises ChatGPT commissions?

Do not treat a third-party referral, partner, or app offer as an OpenAI affiliate program without an OpenAI source that says so. Check the provider, the terms, eligibility, reward, expiration, and who is actually paying.

How can eesel CLI help with affiliate or partner content?

eesel CLI gives a person, script, or coding agent access to the same eesel teammate and workspace as the dashboard. Its JSON output makes source rules, proposed instruction changes, and fresh test results easier for an owner to review.
