1. Claude for projects and coding

Claude offers Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Its paid individual plans include more usage and features such as Projects and Claude Code. It is a sensible alternative when a team needs a long-running document or code workflow, but a large context window does not replace source checks, tests, or code review.

2. Gemini for Google-based work

Gemini is the natural alternative for work that is already in Google. Google’s current plans combine the Gemini app with options such as Deep Research, NotebookLM, storage, and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. Features, limits, and prices vary by country, account type, and tier, so confirm the offer shown to the user rather than copying a plan table from another market.

3. Perplexity for cited research

Perplexity is a good fit when research needs visible citations. That is an advantage for review, not a pass to repeat a claim without checking it. For vendor pricing, policy, security, or legal facts, follow the citation to the official source and date the finding.

4. Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 Copilot is built for teams working in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Microsoft says Copilot Business requires a separate qualifying Microsoft 365 plan. The integration is the reason to choose it; verify license eligibility, data controls, and the app surface before assuming every employee receives the same feature.

5. GitHub Copilot for repository work

GitHub Copilot is designed for development work in GitHub and supported editors. Its value is in the repository workflow: writing code, explaining changes, and assisting with development tasks where tests and pull requests still provide the control point. Teams should test its repository and secret-access rules before enabling it broadly.

6. Grok when X is relevant

Grok can be worth evaluating for teams whose research depends on public conversation on X. It is not a universal research replacement. Decide whether that signal is relevant, how it will be verified, and whether the information can be used safely before treating a social post as a business fact.

7. eesel for a defined company job

eesel is not another general chat alternative. It is an AI teammate platform with ready-to-work helpdesk and blog-writing teammates. Use the helpdesk teammate when the work belongs in an existing queue with approved knowledge and escalation rules; use the blog writer when the job is producing and reviewing content. That is a different requirement from an individual asking a general assistant to draft a message.

Test the boundary before you switch a customer workflow

The eesel CLI lets a person, script, or coding agent operate the same teammate and workspace shown in the dashboard. Every command prints JSON. With Node.js 18.17 or newer, begin with the scope, not a live chat:

Bash
npx @eesel/cli status
npx @eesel/cli integrations
npx @eesel/cli instructions
npx @eesel/cli approvals

Before chat, confirm the selected workspace, connected helpdesk, available order or account data, enabled actions, and downstream permissions. The CLI documentation says setup and observation commands are free; chat is billed work. “Draft only” does not remove a permission already available to the teammate.

Here is a deliberately narrow proposal for a billing-support teammate. A coding agent may prepare the diff, but the owner decides whether to use it.

Diff
+ For billing questions, state only what the approved billing policy supports. If a customer asks for a charge reversal or their payment record cannot be verified, create no promise and hand the ticket to the billing queue.

Use npx @eesel/cli instructions --help before a supported change and --dry-run where supported. After owner approval, read back the saved instruction and approve the billed tests. Start separate fresh conversations using npx @eesel/cli new --name "billing-comparison", then submit each case with npx @eesel/cli chat. Test a normal invoice question and an exception requesting a charge reversal, using fictional facts but not the desired answer. Then check the native result in the helpdesk: the ticket must be visible to the right team, have the right ownership, and contain either a policy-grounded answer or the intended handoff.

Run the same cases against the current support workflow before switching. Record which policy each answer uses, whether the reversal reaches the billing owner, and what a reviewer must correct. The CLI makes eesel’s configuration and responses available to a script or coding agent for that comparison; it does not benchmark the other products or establish a winner by itself.

Pick by the work you need done

Use ChatGPT or Claude for broad personal work. Use Gemini or Copilot when your work is anchored in Google or Microsoft products. Use Perplexity when you need to inspect citations. Use GitHub Copilot when code review is the center of the workflow. Use eesel when the missing capability is a teammate that can work from your company’s approved context in the channel where support or content work already happens. Try eesel when that is the job you need to test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best ChatGPT alternative?

There is no single best option. Pick by job: Claude for project and terminal work, Gemini for Google surfaces, Perplexity for source-led research, Copilot for Microsoft 365, and eesel for defined company support or content jobs.

Which alternative is best for research?

Choose a tool that makes sources visible, then inspect the primary source before acting on important claims. Perplexity is designed around cited answers, while other assistants may offer research features depending on plan and region.

Which alternative works best with Google Workspace?

Gemini is the natural place to start because Google includes Gemini features in Gmail, Docs, and other Google products on eligible plans. Confirm the account, region, and plan before rollout.

Which alternative works best with Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 Copilot is designed to work across eligible Microsoft 365 apps. Its business pricing page says a qualifying Microsoft 365 license is required for the paid Business add-on.

Are free AI assistants enough for work?

They can be enough for low-risk exploration. For company work, evaluate usage limits, source access, data handling, integration permissions, and the human review path rather than price alone.

Can a ChatGPT alternative use internal company knowledge?

Some can use files, projects, or connected services. For customer-facing work, distinguish uploaded context from a verified live record and confirm what actions the tool can take.

Can a coding agent manage eesel?

Yes. eesel CLI prints JSON and operates the same workspace teammate as the dashboard. A coding agent can inspect the setup and propose a limited change, while an owner reviews supported writes and results.
