Extremely predictable, boring at times and with some sentences that left me with the questionable look, but I once again enjoyed it. Novellas are usually a miss for me, to be honest I rarely like them, but those from this series surprised me quiet positively. The ratings in them are pretty low, so I'm probably in the minority here, but what can I say, I liked them.

The heroes here seem like your typical villains at first, but then they turn out to be the biggest softies with dirty minds, which is the perfect combo for me. How can I not like the Reaper who is feared by everyone around but who blushes whenever he is near the heroine? Not to mention talks dirty?

“Ride my face, Princess.”

I don’t even care about the digital footprint adding this quote. That's the hottest thing a man can say in a romance book okay, except maybe "here's the card, buy whatever you want." So in conclusion, I obviously end up liking the hero, the heroine too. I liked that she was both a sweet and soft princess, but was also able to fight for herself and for what she wanted.

I don't even know if there will be more novellas in this series, but if there is, I'm seated.

Wicked is the Reaper was a short novella that I picked up because ... *sigh* here we go again. Because I saw it on tiktok. I read "Beauty & the Beast retelling" and that's all it took to convince me to pick it up.
Unfortunately, it fell under my dissapointing/boring-af-save-me category. Let's dive into this review.

What to expect:
∘ Fae/Royalty
∘ Adult Romance
∘ Fast-paced
Tropes:
∘ Enemies to lovers
∘ Forced proximity
∘ Kidnapping & forced marriage
∘ One bed
∘ Villain gets the girl

Plot
It was clear from the beginning what the plot was going to be, even if you don't know from the start that this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, the hints are there and it's impossible to miss them.
Also, to be honest, I thought the chapter with the hunt and the scene where this Reaper shows up was pretty lame.
As for the rest, it was pretty predictable, or maybe it's only me, because I've read many like this one before.

Characters
Rowan, the princess
At the beginning, I thought she was brave and strong, but by the end she was just a stupid girl, who doesn't think before she acts, whiney and annoying as hell.
Wicked, the love interest
I appreciated his character. A fae who's been cursed by his own brother. A male who just wanted to escape the hell he's been thrown into. He realizes his mistakes and tries to do the good thing.

Romance
There was nothing and then there was something. Just like *snapping finger* that. Too fast and without warning.
We have the enemies-to-lovers trope, my favorite one, and being that this is an adult romance novella we have a few well written sex scenes.

Conclusion
It had potential, it could've been a great story. The ideas are there and they are good ideas, but as it often happens, we have poor execution.
I recommend this book if you want to read a short Beauty and the Beast retelling, with fae and enemies-to-lovers romance.

I know this was just a novella, but it did the enemies to lovers trope a lot better than certain books/series.

The only "flaw" is that the transition period from enemies to lovers, or technically enemies to comfortable-together to lovers, could've used a few more scenes in between.

For example, a lot of the book is Wicked being determined to use her as bait, locking her up in the cage and so on, and then one day he's smiling and blushing and it feels a bit too fast.

But otherwise it was perfect. The romance and steamy scenes and cooking together and yes. Yes. Brilliant.

I'm excited for To Wake a Kingdom now, I hope it's set in the same world and we get a cameo from these characters.

dangerous hunt to win a Princess’s hand but no one laughs when the VILLIAN stalks out with the prize 🌳❄️💚 amazing premise but falls short on the execution!

Rowan unwittingly becomes a Bride to the unknown ‘villain’ but things are not as they seem. He is tall & dark with a mysterious face tattoo so you know he’s hot too. What a shame he was never intending to use her as a Bride…

Short novella that reads like a fairytale with a sprinkle of smutty delight!

🍃 wild Fae & curses

🍃 ONE BED

🍃 a princess determined to escape!

🍃 sweet smuttiness

I loved the premise of the story and it had such high potential but the storyline was a little boring. More focused on documenting the passing of time rather than detailing the budding relationship.

I’m still interested in continuing with the story.

Honestly, I thought this novella was very well structured. For a hundred pages story, the pacing flowed naturally and it felt complete. It had the potential to be a full-length novel but conveyed the plot within far less many pages, and it didn't really suffer from it. I have some tiny critiques but they mostly stem from my personal taste rather than technicalities.

This review contains slight spoilers by the way.

The premise had me thinking it would be a bit darker than it actually was. I wasn't fully convinced about the reasoning behind The Reaper taking Rowan. I honestly would've preferred if it'd been out of pettiness rather than the tale that was told when things were revealed. I wanted Wicked to be truly wicked. I wanted him to take an unwilling Rowan and keep her for himself. I wanted a Rowan to fall in love with her captor and her captor to fall into his own trap and fall in love too. I know, I know...The story isn't meant to be this way, and this is all fantasies and only the expectations that I had while picking up this novella. I must say, I am influenced by the fact that I wish to read a dubcon love story, a good one for once. I thought this one was the one but I found myself slightly pouting when I realized it was not a dubcon love story. This isn't what lowered the rating though.

The characters were nice, especially Wicked at the start. I liked how cold and selfish he was. He had plans and wanted to go through with them. I just wished he hadn't done a 180. I understand that it sort of made sense with the plot and reasons, but him showing remorse sort of dulled his character for me. By the way he was described, his darkness and wrongdoing, he appeared to be an Unseelie, which I was very hyped about...until it was revealed he was just a fae. Or rather, there didn't seem to be any distinction between Seelie and Unseelie in that world. I didn't want Wicked to be sweet and caring. Protective, sure, but not soft.

Every head turned to the sound as a figure emerged. It was enormous, wearing a long black cloak that brushed nearly to the ground, covered in thick shaggy fur. Its boots struck the earth with the cadence of a dirge as it approached, walking straight to where I stood with my family. Covered with a hood, its head was bent low with the weight of its enormous burden.

As for Rowan, I liked the way she was at the start. She was fierce, brave and even though she was compliant to Wicked's demands, she still had fire in her, trying to find a way to escape. It's just too bad that there wasn't much of a transition between when she wanted to escape and when she fell in love. Rowan wasn't unlikable, but there were some moments where I looked up in an almost eye-roll.

“I love it when you look at me like that, Princess. Like you want to strip off my skin and gnaw on my bones for dinner.”-Wicked

Now, their chemistry was nice to some levels. I liked their interactions the most at the start because of the tension. I wished that tension had remained for the majority of the story. Again, just a preference because of my expectations. I think the fact that the story was told only with the heroine's perspective helped at the beginning, when she didn't know what to expect. It helped create some anguish and mystery. But I also wanted to see the hero's perspective, to see his feelings warring and his doubts about his plan slowly building up.

I wish there'd been a better ending. Of course, we can expect that the main characters will live happily ever after but since he is a fae and will most likely outlive her, I hardly can see how their relationship will work. I wanted to know if there was a way for them to either live forever together, or be bound to die at the same time. The romantic in me just wonders about that sort of things. Also, a little mini critique that I have and have to mention is the fact that Wicked told Rowan his real name. Am I wrong to think a fae never tells its true name to other beings because it would give them power over that specific fae? I'm not super knowledgeable about fae but I think that's a thing? At the start, when he tells his name, there is a small interaction between Rowan and Wicked and he makes it seem like that wasn't his real name but that it's what she should call him. I really thought his name would be something else but no 😅 Bummer.

This was soooo good! 👏👏👏 Sometimes a quick novella is just all you need.

I really enjoyed the plot with this one and there were so many good moments! I think the length was perfect, which sometimes with novella's it's so hard to capture the reader in such a short amount of time - but this was done perfectly.

Read this if you like captive romance. You're going to get hit with the plot right off the bat and the tension between the two main characters is PERFECTION 🫠🤭

"His dark eyes were a mix of emotions. Fury and longing. Vengeance and lust. I wanted to know every thought running through his head."

"I love it when you look at me like that, Princess. Like you want to strip off my skin and gnaw at my bones for dinner."

Tropes

Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for this little story. I wrote it as a quick, lighthearted romance to sweep you away, and I'm overwhelmed at how excited all of you have been. I know so many of you wanted more from Rowan and Wicked and perhaps their story isn't quite finished yet... stay tuned. I've got so many more stories up my sleeve and I can't wait to share them all with you. :)

wait, that's all? ow shucks
this easily could’ve been a 300+ page fantasy book cause this was just too short 😪
i needed more world building, and more of these characters, bc i was just starting to get into it, and poof, it’s done before i even blinked 🫠
but a very fun, cute and quick read indeed ✨

• caretaker trope when she gets hurt & he takes care of her
• spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
• enemies to lovers

The audiobook was actually really good! The pacing built up the angst well! They do say the “L” word towards the end which was a bit much but overall so entertaining. Wicked is giving captor but also baby girl

Once I started, I couldn't stop reading this amazing book. My one complaint is that it's not longer. This book is everything I love rolled into one book: great characters, lush world-building, tension, romance... I'm a sucker for Beauty and the Beast retellings and enemies-to-lovers, but Tuli's twist on the classic is perfection. Don't hesitate on this one!

This author has such great potential in her story ideas and concepts, but the execution isn’t quite there yet. Wicked is the Reaper has an intriguing world that the author provides snippets of lore for throughout the story including mythical histories, political drama, and social politics, but it’s all breezed over for cheap and quick romance. The pacing of the story is too quick and would have been done better if the characters had TIME to grow into one another rather than whiplashing back & forth from I MUST ESCAPE to I WANT YOU NOW. The MCs felt very two-dimensional and the action/fight scenes are merely sentences long as opposed to fully developed paragraphs or pages with real detail. Without providing spoilers, the actual reason for why the plot is even happening is given barely 2 chapters worth of time in the whole story. By the time the climax of the plot appears, it’s resolution is over before the reader can blink.

If the author will choose to expand her concepts in future books rather than leaving multiple loose ends to race to the smut, I think she’ll be a great world-builder and fantasy writer in time. Overall, it was a cool concept with future potential but wicked is the reaper had really poor pacing and plot holes that left me wanting.

This was a quick and easy read. I Haven’t read a lot of Beauty and the beast retellings except for Acotar but this was honestly more entertaining. It was really funny at times and I appreciated the escape attempts. Particularly one of them, that was hilarious. Iykyk

Some notes:
- Maybe a bit too much spice? Do you really need 3 scenes in the span of 130 pages? All of them in the last 60 pages 🌶️🌶️
- Kinda weird name on the fmc
- And I did miss some backstory for her. She should have said a few words about not wanting the obligations of a princess/queen before suddenly throwing it all away and saying she’s never wanted it… 😂

As usual, Nisha has me worshipping every word she writes. This may have been a novella but it packed a PUNCH. So much story and heart in such a small but powerful package. She is so amazing at mixing PHENOMENAL spice with sweet, tender moments that will give you butterflies. I absolutely loved this and am so excited to continue the series!

Minority here. This sounded like it was going to be a good read, and I was really looking forward to diving into it after getting a copy free by signing up for the author's newsletter. I can't even tell you how disappointed I was in the whole thing and how little of it actually made sense.

I get that this was a pretty short read, but there simply wasn't enough world building done to explain anything that was going on. Like, why would the fae require the humans to have a hunt and the princess be the prize? How come the fae are even in charge? Why did Wicked build a freaking castle thinking it would be full of people? There also wasn't enough time for developing the characters. I truly didn't care what happened to either of them. And the speed that they went from enemies to lovers was fast enough to give one whiplash and made zero sense.

Rowan is a princess that has spent her whole life knowing that when she turned a certain age she would be given as prize the hunter who brought back the biggest kill, and he in turn would become king. She took comfort in the knowledge that she already knew who was most likely to win and the two of them have spent their years getting closer. It was never romantic between them, but they knew they could still be happy together. Just as his win is being announced, an unexpected contestant comes forth.

Wicked had a lot of baggage, one of which was how he was cursed to remain trapped in the forest around that human kingdom. When a passerby tells him that the blood of princess is what he needs to be able to get the one thing needed to break his curse, he spends months practicing his hunting skills in order to kill the biggest stag of the forest and claim Rowan as his. And he succeeds.

Like I said, the change between these two happens insanely fast. Wicked goes from not caring at all about Rowan because she is simply a means to an end, to practically overnight having to fight himself over how much he finds himself drawn to her and caring about her well being. Rowan at least spends a day or so fighting against her captor in any way she can to regain her freedom. But she too can't fight the strange attraction she feels for Wicked. It just had me shaking my head how fast these two fell in lust with each other considering everything. And once they did, they couldn't think of anything else.

I will say that I did kind of like how this ended despite the insta-love going on. The only really stupid thing was the hinting at a romance already happening between Rowan's former intended and her sister. I mean, come on.

The Hunt is on for Rowan’s hand and just as her childhood best friend claims the victory a gruesomely masked figure steps out of the shadows to claim the victory and the legal right to her as his bride. The Reaper is a source of nightmares and, certain of her inevitable fate, Rowan has no choice but to be drug back to his home deep in the woods and what lies ahead of her. What ensues is an enemies to lovers “quick-burn” with absolutely top tier banter and both a MMC and FMC who are lovable in their own rights and even MORE lovable together.

This novella was short, sweet, cut the fluff, but still delivered ALL of the spice and the feels. I absolutely LOVED Rowan and Wicked. The story had hints of Beauty and the Beast with a curse/Fae twist and hints at a future storyline that I would love to see more of someday!!

All in all this was the PERFECT little binge and included all of the things I absolutely adore in Romantasy novels without the complicated world structures and lengthy books. If you’re looking for a quick fix to snap you out of a slump or just a good read by the pool or on a Saturday afternoon this is IT!!

this was actually such a good reading??? i was not expecting to like it as much as i did but like wow!!!

i’m a sucker for a retelling, especially a beauty & the beast retelling & as a quick & easy novella read, this one hit all the spots for me for a good retelling!! sometimes a good and quick (and spicy) novella is all you need and this one did just that for me!

the plot was really good & well done for the length of the book — i feel like everything was said and done perfectly within the amount of pages this book held! great plot, details, and overall flowed very nicely from start to finish! te tension and chemistry between the leads was amazing, i felt it through the text, and the mmc was broody and hot as hell!! currently wishing i had the chance to be snowed in with a sexy fae.

if you’re a fan of retellings, you don’t wanna miss this one!!

what to expect in wicked is the reaper:
💙 captor x captive
💙 quick romantasy
💙 beauty & the beast retelling
💙 possessive & broody mmc
💙 ancient curse
💙 enemies to lovers

This was a super quick novella read, but it was right up my alley. Princess, taken by a mysterious, dark Fae to his mysterious little castle in the woods. Yep, it reached my trifecta. I strive for in books. 1) high fantasy 2) romance 3) spice. The move between enemies to lovers was quick, but the book was short, so it had to move fast. I would have absolutely given my pinky finger to have this a full length novel. If the author ever rewrite this in full length, you best believe I will buy every single special edition she comes out with! A princess destined to marry nobility, is taken by a mysterious reaper, who won the tournament for her hand in marriage. He promptly whisks her away to a dark, mysterious castle in the woods, and locks her up. What could go wrong…. or right? 😈 even though it was short, it still hit me and all the right spots in my brain so I give it a five out of five. The spice level is about medium. 5/5⭐️ 3/5🌶

Sweet

This was a cute novella. I don't have really anything negative to say honestly. The story flowed naturally and the premise was unique, it was just missing something for me. I needed more of the elements that opened the story with mystic and genuine newness. As the story trickled on it fell to commonalities.

This was a really well written novella which included a lot of classic romantasy tropes. The story was short and sweet, there was definitely room to expand this plot a bit but for a novella it was solid.

A princess is wed to the winner of a hunting competition. The mysterious "Reaper" is the one who wins this contest. No one knows anything about the reaper except girls who have been seen with him disappear and it is suspected that he is the reason for the dead bodies being found in the forest. He needs her blood to break a curse and she is having none of it.

✅ Enemies to lovers
✅ One bed
✅ Cat and Mouse
✅ Morally grey fae
✅ Taking care when injured

This is definitely a spicer read. It can be explicit and has lots of smutty language. If this bothers you, find another book because it's well done in this one and us faerie 🌽 lovers are into it.

The audio was well done as well. My only hiccup with the audio was how the narrator says, "I'm sorry." It was so heavy on the Canadian accent that it totally distracted me from the story over and over 😂

Holy fantasy/fairytale romance Batman!! This book knocked me right out of my socks! I’m so blown away!

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, fantasy romance , and fairytale lovers.

⚠️18+

This was my first book by Nisha J. Tuli & I am absolutely her newest number one fan! The writing, storyline, emotions, characters, and spice in this short novella are all top notch!

I decided to pick this book up because it looked like a good spooky season read not knowing anything about the book. Well, it’s not a spooky book but I am so freaking glad that I read it anyway!

Let me tell you a little bit about it:

💜Beauty & The Beast Vibes
💙Enemies To Lovers
💜One Bed Trope
💙Forced Proximity
💜Arranged Marriage
💙Morally Gray MMC
💜Strong & Sassy FMC

This short novella is a fantasy romance that is also a fairytale retelling. After reading, I learned that this novella & these characters will appear in Nisha’s duology called Curse Of Thorne! I’m so excited!!! That being said…I will MOST DEFINITELY be reading this duology!

Just go in blind for this one…trust me! It’s sooooo good!

I’ll be recommending this book from the rooftops for eternity! I’m obsessed!
