Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter comes a fusion of modern and fantastical worlds, where a young woman must navigate a secret society, uncover a shocking enemy…and resist an undeniable attraction.

Twenty-year-old Arden Roosa knows only Ourland. Two worlds split and stitched together, with broken pieces from each, statues of fallen gods, and heavenly artifacts that are worshipped…or feared.

But nothing is more fearsome than the night.

A strange madness haunts the darkest hours, turning innocents into gleeful killers. Arden does her best to stay safe, until she reads a book written about her life―The Book of Arden―and everything changes.

Forced to join Fort Bala Royal Academy, Arden is paired with the ruthless High Prince Cyrus Dolion. But while he trains her for combat against a mystical adversary, she can’t deny the sparks burning between them.

If her panic attacks and war games aren’t enough, Arden is also tapped to join the Tome Society, rumored guardians of an invisible library with books that foretell the future. But the more she learns about the society, the less she understands about Ourland, the gods…and the person she’s destined to be.

This book caught me off guard. Im thinking it has potential to be a Booktok Must Read

I had high expectations for it based on the synopsis, but sadly, the beginning is slow. The world building was a little foggy, and it took me a while to settle into the rhythm. But then the main character, Arden, got to the training school—and something shifted. The pacing picked up. Things started moving. Not necessarily action-heavy, but emotionally. Plot-wise. Relationship-wise. And by 45% I realized: I was invested and loving it. I couldn’t put it down.

Arden isn’t fearless. She’s anxious. She overthinks. She lets her emotions override logic often. And it’s frustrating—because you want her to choose growth sooner. But that’s also what makes her real. She struggles to trust the people who care about her. She doubts herself. But every time she gets knocked down, there’s a moment of bravery that reminds you: she’s getting there.

And that’s what makes her compelling.
She’s not strong from the start. She becomes.

Cyrus is a standout. Strong, calm, confident, teasing. He challenges Arden in the ways she needs. He’s not just there for romantic tension—he’s a mirror. He pushes her forward. And the best part? He’s not loud about it. He moves with quiet certainty. You can feel that there’s more to him the second he enters the story.

Shiloh, sweet Shiloh, is the soft heart of the story. Comforting, genuine, and easy to love. A bright light. His presence brings warmth when everything else feels uncertain. He stood out immediately, and I adored every scene with him. He gives golden retriever energy.

There were moments that genuinely made me mad. (There’s one choice, Arden, or should I say The Author, makes late in the book that pissed me off.) But even in those moments, I cared—which says a lot. I don’t get that emotionally involved unless the writing is doing something right and then veers off course.

And then there’s the ending. The last 10% of this book goes fast happens. It could’ve felt rushed, but it didn’t. Everything landed with weight. Characters stepped into who they needed to become. Some I thought I lost, I didn’t. Some I’m still worried about. And somehow, it all left me satisfied and wanting more.

---

Here's why I think this book is worth your time:

It rewards patience—the pacing builds, and it pays off.

The characters aren’t surface-level. They’re messy, complicated, and layered.

The emotional growth is slow, but it feels earned.

The romantic tension isn’t forced—it’s foundational.

The last few chapters leave you feeling something.

If you love stories where the heroine doesn’t have it all figured out, where the characters feel human and flawed, and where emotional tension carries as much weight as plot—you’ll connect with this one.

It starts quiet. But by the end? It lingers.

A big thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for an ARC of this book!!

I absolutely LOVE when a book delivers on its synopsis and then some!

In my personal & useless opinion, if anything the synopsis did not give this book justice! I picked this up expecting a pretty standard & straight forward fun time. I was not expecting to be completely blown away! This has everything we all love! A badazz FMC, training, secret societies, Gods, mysterious illnesses, great one-liners, jealousy, Academia, inconvenient love interest, etc. Not to mention it's beautifully written!

This is the kinda book that when you have plans, you are secretly hoping they get cancelled so you can stay in and read. This book takes you to a world that is shared with another, ourland and theirland, which is connected by a rift that took elements of both worlds when it opened and placed them in its counterpart. The MFC Arden is forced to join the royal academy, which trains lords and ladies to become active duty soldiers fighting a madness that breaks out at random, turning the kindest of people into crazed gleeful killers. During Ardens training, she is approached to join the tome society, the very society the bala academy trains its soldiers to defend against. She stays loyal until she is presented with the book or Arden, which pages tell her past present and future. Naturally, it leaves her questioning her very reality.
She's a feisty, smart, and resilient MFC, who's growth is a pleasure to read. It also has a swoony grump turned, absolutely cutie MMC High Prince Cyrus. For the romance side, i would say it's more angsty than spicy, so if you aren't into high spice books, then this will be safe to read for you. The author has such amazing world building abilities, such great twists and turns, and i was completely emersed the whole way through. I simply can not wait for the next book, which is unfortunate as I already got this one a month before the set release date. That being said, I am looking forward to discovering what else this author has to offer.

Thank you to the publisher Montlake for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Twenty year old Arden Rosa knows only Ourland, two worlds spilt and stitched together with broken pieces of both. There is a madness that haunts the land and turns innocents into gleeful killers, so night is something to be feared and Arden has never seen the stars. Forced to join Bala Royal Academy for training as a lady, Arden is forced to work with High Prince Cyrus Dolion. While he is training her sparks fly and she can’t deny her attraction to him. The Solians are trying to recruit Arden to join the Tome Society, the rumoured guardians of a library with books that tell the future. The more Arden learns the more she realises has been hidden from her.

I loved this book, HP was seriously badass and I loved him, particularly with Arden, sigh. I really enjoyed the world building; all characters were fleshed out really well and I loved the plot. Arden works really hard to fight her fears, I loved the back and forth between her and HP, the chemistry between them sizzles. Gena Showalter is one of my go to authors and she doesn’t disappoint with this book, I can’t wait to dive into the second book as I loved it. I didn’t really like Roman, he comes across as really arrogant. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book.

DNF at 10%. This was painfully difficult to get through. It read like a very young YA novel — I’m talking 14-year-old level young. The language was overly basic; I’m pretty sure the worlds were literally called “Our World” and “Their World.” Seriously? And the world-building was nonexistent. I kept trying to piece together how this world worked, but there was simply nothing there to work with. I think I’m being generous by giving it 2 stars.

I was pleasantly surprised, at first, to find that this book isn't at all what I thought it would be from the blurb. (To be fair, I only read the first sentence or two of the synopsis - I didn't want to know much going in.) I was expecting a more typical fantasy setting - the usual medieval-like fiefdoms with some magic thrown in. Instead, I was excited to realize in the first chapter that this is a modern or indeterminate-future dystopia! Right up my alley.

The premise is that the world as we know it has been "ripped" in a number of places to not just reveal but haphazardly mingle with a parallel universe. Among other things, this has let in an epidemic that turns people into mindless violent killers, and has created a food crisis and other scarcities due to the fact that nothing can grow in the mixed soils from the two worlds. But "Theirland" has also brought advances in pharmaceuticals, armaments, and nutrition science, which allows the resulting dictatorship to keep the population subdued in the name of safety through the use of a combination of martial law and fear induction psychology.

Really cool setup, right? I thought so anyway. Amid this setup, we're introduced to the main character Arden, who is recruited right away in the book's opening to join a trainee group at the military academy, which is revealed pretty quickly to be more like a prison laboratory. At first, it seems like the underdog-at-the-military-academy trope is going to be really fun and work well. I breezed through the first 80 pages of the book in a single sitting.

But pretty quickly after that, Arden meets Cyrus and things start devolving into the typical doe eyes, damsel-in-distress can't-help-falling-for-the-bad-boy-with-the-face-scar-and-muscles thing. The rest of the book plays out a lot like everything I complained about in my Heartless Hunter review. Arden also has a "good guy" love interest, which, like Rune/Alex in Heartless Hunter, is quickly eclipsed by the "inescapable" chemistry between Arden and Cyrus. Arden's attraction to Cyrus, in contrast, seems to be mostly reduced to pheromones - I cringed the first time his overpowering "ambrosia" scent is mentioned, and it seems to be mentioned with increasing frequency through the book, as if we'd forget that first jarring mention.

By the end of the book, I was seriously reminded of an 8- or 9-year old girl just telling themselves an imaginative love story. At one point, Arden wears "the pinkest, frilliest dress" with more ruffles than she's ever seen to a party (where she and Cyrus spend all of 5 minutes unsuccessfully prying secrets out of people before pulling a minor heist and then leaving). The whole thing just feels really juvenile, like the author is really just living in her own imaginary girl world rather than trying to stay true to the characters and the story.

At no point is magic directly mentioned in any of the technology they're using, but there's also no explanation given for how some of it might theoretically work. At the same party where Arden wears the frilly dress, she also wears a necklace that somehow ensures her voice can't be recorded (huh? how would that work?) even though she can talk at a normal volume and be heard by whoever she's talking to (and did it also mute Cyrus's half of the conversation, or others...? never explained). That same frilly dress miraculously renders her invisible to cameras (how convenient), even though she's perfectly visible to other humans, and the dress is not a body suit - it is sleeveless and does not cover her head. Earlier in the story, Cyrus gives her biometric trackers ostensibly to monitor her fear/panic level via heart rate (how convenient for the love interest to have access to her pulse!) that also conveniently allow him to watch her and talk to her (through... bone conduction, I guess?).

It just seemed to get more and more ridiculous without at all adding to the dystopian hero story I thought we were getting in the beginning. I seriously considered giving this just 2 stars - but I did really like the premise and... I guess I was feeling generous? (Edit: nope, downgraded to 2 after more reflection.) I'm not sure if I'll read the second book. It has potential to be better than the first with a greater focus on political intrigue and potential backstabbing, dual loyalties, etc... but looking at the rest of this author's repertoire, I don't have high hopes that she can stop herself from letting the romance overtake the story again.

The book failed to hold my attention or make me care for the characters and their circumstances.

I think this is because of the poor worldbuilding and not establishing the stakes soon enough. I felt disconnected from the narrative and the character's struggles as I just did not care.

I DNF at 25%

I got this from the Amazon first reads program, the premise sounded really interesting, so I started it right away. Right off the bat, the world building is a bit flimsy. We’re just told that there are these monsters and realms but none of it is explained. If you look past that, it’s a fun storyline. I love a war college trope. The best parts of this book are the banter with the two main characters. I would have liked to see some more character development, because they feel a bit one dimensional, but their interactions were fun and kept me engaged. The pacing was hit or miss. The best parts being when they were in the other realm fighting and when there was espionage activity happening. The ending was rushed. I need answers! 3.5 stars

I read this book in like a day. I will say, it grips you and takes you on quite a ride. I’d rate it higher if the characters weren’t so strangely written. The protagonist’s anxiety is used as a poorly written plot device and comes up at random times, only when it’s convenient for her to have a cute little panic attack so the male love interests can coddle her. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth. And then there’s a weird power dynamic between the protagonist and one of the love interests that just… doesn’t get addressed in quite the way it should. You can tell this author is used to writing much more spice than is included in this book, so I think maybe that’s why the romance feels a bit funky.

The dystopian fantasy world this story takes place in is pretty intriguing, and while it could have been fleshed out a bit more, it was definitely fun to read about. I liked the premise and found that to be the driving factor that kept me hooked. The magic is also interesting, and I think it is set up well for the reader to explore it more in the sequel.

Solid 3 stars. Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun read.

Honestly?
If I didn't see Gina's name on the front cover I wouldn't have believed it was written by her because it's not anywhere up her quality/standard. I struggled to keep reading this until the end as it never made any real sense or logic especially as it smacks of flipping and twisting the dystopian crapology whats been going on in the "crazy & insane 5yrs" in a book.
I wont be reading the follow on second book. I'd rather reread my collect of ALL her other books as they are the ones, one couldn't put down they were that good.
This last book? I just kept wondering how much more before it came to the end.

4.5 ⭐️ - Kingdom of Tomorrow took me by surprise! This book consumed my thoughts for the past four days. It hit all the right notes for me -- genuine character and emotional growth, the perfect amount of world-building, and a swoonworthy slow-burn romance.

Fair warning though, this one takes patience. The story takes a while to get started, but I found the payoff to be worth it at the end. If you're looking for a book that takes off quickly, maybe skip this one!

Our story takes place in two different realms, Ourland and Theirland, where a madness turns people into killers. I'll be honest, I usually avoid stories with multiple realms because juggling the ins and outs of different worlds often gets confusing fast. But that was not the case here -- the author's world-building was well done and doesn't ever feel overwhelming. What I loved most is how naturally these details unfold throughout the story. It never felt info-dumpy, nor did it feel like I was being spoonfed exposition. Instead, the world reveals itself organically through Arden's experiences at the military academy, where the classes and training sequences give you something tangible to anchor all the concepts. It makes everything so much easier to process and visualize.

The characters were also layered, complicated, and perfectly flawed. Arden is the most relatable FMC I've encountered in a while and I loved that she doesn't fall into any generic romantasy archetype. She's dealing with panic attacks and feeling completely out of her depth, yet she's also bold and fearless when it comes to uncovering the truth about Ourland and The Tome Society. Watching her emotional growth unfold slowly throughout the story felt so earned and authentic.

The romance does take a while to get going, but once it did, I was glued to my Kindle. Cyrus, the mysterious High Prince overseeing Arden's training, has quickly become one of my new favorite book boyfriends. If "acts of service" is your love language, you'll be swooning.

Overall: If you are drawn to books with war college settings, themes of predetermined fate and prophecies, or stories that have an equal balance of romance and plot, Kingdom of Tomorrow should be on your TBR!

So, for the first part of the book, I must say… it was slow…
And, there was a lot going on and I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to follow it…

But then, the MFC, Arden, went to training school… and met Cyrus… who is a high prince, AND a ruthless trainer! (And, seemed like a real piece of work… if you ask me… but I know, no one is asking…) 🤣
She absolutely WANTS to hate him, but instead is cursing herself for finding herself attracted to him! 😮😕
What is wrong with her???

You are brought into the different worlds/realms and all the good and bad that go along with them… and I have to say, it was a really tough decision as to who she should side with! And, she questions herself all the time…
Is she doing the right thing? How is she going to keep her mother safe? Where are her friends? Are they ok?

Some world building. Lots of fighting, killing and brutality. Some friendships forged. Some love interests. And… trying to find the RIGHT PATH to move forward, and hopefully, save their world!

4 bold stars for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

It took me a bit to get into it and truly care about the characters, but once it did, I felt like it took off. I’m intrigued to find out where this is going and how the good guys will win. Also, I love who Arden ends up with. As much as I liked the other guy, he just didn’t feel right as a lead. I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend it. The narrator did a great job.

This cannot be the same Gena Showalter whose books I devoured in the 2010s.

This was unendearingly weird and flimsy from the get go. The world-building was weak, the dialogue was inane, and the characters were goofy as fuck and/or painfully boring. I'm not sure which age group this was targeted at, but it missed the mark in every way.

This was the first book in a new series that took us to a new world. Unfortunately, it took me way too long to understand the world. I've learned that in the fantasy genre, sometimes (for me) it is easier to actually read (vs listening) the first book to help me build the world in my mind. For some reason, seeing the words and being able to reread sentences that might be confusing really does make a difference.

Since this was an audio ARC, I wasn't able to do this, so it took probably the first 60% of the book until I felt like I had a handle on what was going on. Even then, I was still a bit lost.

The FMC - Arden Roosa - wants to be a "grower" in this world- she loves plants. When she goes to whatever place that apparently tells you your future employment, she discovers that her mother has unpaid medical bills and the only way they can be paid is if she forgoes the fantastic job or academy (still unsure about that) and goes into the military. They send her to the Fort Bala Royal Academy, which is a training academy for those who will be defending their world from the evil monsters. Unfortunately, she suffers from panic attacks so she's a bit hesitant about this.

When she gets to the Academy, for whatever reason, she attracts the attention of the MMC High Prince Cyrus Dolion - or HP. He takes her under his wing and there is an obvious attraction.

Later in the book, you do learn WHY Arden got so much attention and it makes more sense, but in the beginning I kept thinking, "Why is everyone so enamored with Arden?"

I actually felt like the book finally took off around the 85% mark or so and things really take off. Of course, there is the requisite cliffhanger and the book ends with the set up for the next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this Audio ARC. This book will be out for publication on September 1, 2025.

This was alright! I found the world building to be slightly sloppy and underdeveloped. However, Arden and Cyrus were the redeeming pieces of this book. I loved their banter, his yearning, and her fierceness. Their relationship had me flying through this, and I can't wait to see more in the sequel. Honestly, they reminded me a lot of Cardan and Jude--my all time favorites--so maybe I'm biased in my obsession with these characters in an otherwise underwhelming story.

Arden and Cyrus kept me engaged enough to want to keep reading, and get me to pick up the sequel. I wish the world building had been stronger, because I do think the plot has potential to be a stellar story.

Gena Showalter has done it again. As a long-time fan of her work, especially the Alice in Zombieland series, I had high expectations going into Kingdom of Tomorrow and it more than delivered.

Arden is a fantastic main character: strong, layered, and immediately engaging. I found myself invested in her journey from the very first chapter, and the way her struggles and strengths are woven together makes her feel truly authentic.

The concept behind this book is nothing short of epic. Showalter has created a world that feels vast and imaginative, yet grounded in emotion and character development. The pacing kept me hooked throughout, balancing action, intrigue, and heartfelt moments perfectly.

Kingdom of Tomorrow is everything I look for in fantasy rich worldbuilding, dystopian, compelling characters, and a plot that leaves you desperate for the next instalment. Without doubt, one of my favourite reads of the year so far.

Felt all over the place

Im not sure what to make of this book. There was very little context at the start that gave me a good idea about what the world was like and who Arden was. She was anxiety ridden and awkward. Shiloh was introduced and was the obvious original love interest that would predictably lose out to main male character. Shiloh and Arden had way more chemistry than Arden and Cyrus did throughout the entire book. It fetl weird and forced. The nicknames were cringe worthy. Kitten, bubble gum, pink, sugar bear??? I never really figured out when the attraction and relationship started. It just was odd conversations, weird looks, and the obligatory claiming mine as if that made the relationship make any more sense. The story itself had no obvious flow. It felt disjointed and all over the place. Interesting ideas but poor execution.

Oh wow, Kingdom of Tomorrow is such a enchanting read! 📚✨ From the very first page, I was completely hooked by Arden’s world—this intriguing blend of two split worlds, filled with broken gods, fallen statues, and heavenly artifacts that are either worshipped or feared. It’s like stepping into a dream that’s both beautiful and a little bit dangerous. 😍🌙

Arden Roosa is such a relatable character; she’s brave but also vulnerable, battling panic attacks and trying to stay safe in a world full of chaos. Her journey of self-discovery is so inspiring, and I loved watching her grow stronger with each challenge she faced. 💪💖 The story beautifully captures her inner struggles and her desire to understand her place in this mysterious universe. The way her character evolves is truly empowering! 🌸✨

And then there's High Prince Cyrus Dolion—oh my goodness, he’s both ruthless and charming! 💖🔥 Their chemistry is so intense, and I loved how their relationship develops amidst all the chaos and danger. The sparks between them really add a layer of depth to the story, making it both exciting and romantic. The tension and chemistry kept me turning pages late into the night! 🌟💕

The plot is jam-packed with twists and turns, from mystical adversaries to secret societies like the Tome Society, who guard an invisible library that seems to hold all the secrets of the future. 🕮🔮 The idea of books that foretell what’s to come is so fascinating, and it made me think about fate, destiny, and how much we really know about the world around us. The more Arden learns about the society, the more mysterious everything becomes, and I loved trying to piece it all together along with her. The story keeps you guessing and wanting more! 😱✨

What I also appreciated was how the author weaves themes of faith, fear, and hope throughout the story. The gods and artifacts add a divine touch, and the way Arden questions what she believes in makes her journey even more compelling. The book’s atmosphere is both lush and tense, with moments of quiet introspection and explosive action, perfectly balanced. 🌸🔥

Overall, this book is a magical blend of fantasy, mystery, and romance—perfect for anyone who loves stories about worlds that are as beautiful as they are dangerous. Whether you're into epic battles, mystical artifacts, or swoon-worthy romance, Kingdom of Tomorrow has it all! I honestly couldn’t recommend it more. It’s a captivating escape that left me dreaming about Arden’s world long after I closed the last page. 💕📖✨

Happy reading, everyone! Get ready for an adventure filled with magic, mystery, and a little bit of romance—you won’t want to miss this one! 🌟😊

I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley.

I'm glad to see this book getting some attention!
Kingdom of Tomorrow is set in a dystopian realm where you don't know who to trust or believe, you can't go out at night and could become Maddened at any time. Arden is so sure she's on the right side, except when she doubts! You aren't sure what Cyrus believes and if Arden should trust him.
I was so immersed in this world. I appreciated that Arden wasn't physically weak to begin with although she did have to battle anxiety and panic attacks.
Another reviewer said this book seemed to be YA, and it definitely could be, but the story is totally engrossing and who doesn't love a well done YA!
I also saw it compared to Fourth Wing and to Hunger Games. I can see both comparisons, it isn't the same but it does give those vibes to me.

Oh ho ho ho. Did I have fun. I was like "idk if i wanna commit to a romantasy right now" then after chapter five, i texted mallory that i was fully committing.

THEN i couldnt put the book down. I stayed up late reading it. I laid in bed thinking about it. I dreaded going to work yesterday bc it means I couldn't read it. I woke up EARLY TODAY ON A FRIDAY to read this in bed before work. Came home from work, sat on couch, just finished it.

Is it the best writing? No. Is it kind of giving Fourth Wing? Yes. Did I have a blast with the characters? Yes. DID I ALREADY PREORDER BOOK 2 COMING OUT IN DECEMBER? Yes.

This book felt like adult Divergent mixed with a little bit of Maze Runner. Definitely not what I was expecting going in but I had a fun time with it. I enjoyed most of the characters and the bantering was good (for the most part lol). Sometimes the writing style took me out of the narrative a bit and I occasionally had a hard time visualizing some things. I also still find it a bit unclear why the MMC was SO into the FMC and I think there could’ve been some more relationship building there. But this book was fun and I would probably read a sequel!

Thanks to Gena Showalter, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

It took me a couple chapters to get into the book and I almost stopped reading it. Once Arden arrived at the academy and met Cyrus, I was super interested in how the author would continue to build the story. I was very disappointed that there was absolutely no build up to their relationship. At first they were just captain and foot soldier and suddenly he couldn’t think of anyone else but her. At that point the story was just all over the place. I finished skipping the last couple of chapters and just read the ending.

Mid-read mood (23%): This is a truly interesting premise. I went in blind, but I still had preconceived notions of what it was about, and I was blown away by how wrong I was. So far, I'm loving it. I hope it keeps up throughout the rest of the book. I'm glad the audio was 'free' with KU. I likely wouldn't have taken a chance on it otherwise, despite the cool cover art (yep, I judge my books by their covers).

This was a fast, easy read and I liked it. It was entertaining and had a few twists I didn't completely expect. Shiloh was like a puppy, which was cute but not really my preference, and Cyrus grew on me. Arden was mostly okay, though a little immature. But the world building just wasn't there. A lot of stuff didn't make sense, and not in an intentional way. There are ways to create a tyrant regime that spreads misinformation without just pretending like everyone is ignorant. The author should have explained the world as the MC was taught, made it clear and understandable, and then explained the reveals and how the regime is lying. As it is now, I really don't understand anything more about this world than I did when I started. Arden's character was also inconsistent. The author kept jamming down our throats how she is supposed to be panic girl, but she really doesn't panic all that often or in situations where she actually should. She literally ends up killing someone she cares about in self-defense and is barely effected. And every other character was just kinda there, very superficial and no real connections formed.
