A McQuivey's Costume Shop Romance

The Maid of Sherwood Forest

Rate this book
Mariah thought Robin Hood was just a legend—until time pulled her into his world and the outlaw stole her heart.

Nothing about Mariah Clinton’s passion for archery or her work as a sous-chef in contemporary London prepares her for the moment she’s pulled into another time—and another life. One minute, she’s stepping into McQuivey’s Costume Shop to rent a medieval gown. The next, she’s standing in a castle kitchen in twelfth-century Nottingham—with no idea how she got there or how to return to modern time. Forced to pose as a kitchen servant, she must draw on ingenuity and courage to survive in a world in which she shouldn’t exist. But when her skill with a bow draws the attention of outlaws in Sherwood Forest, she’s swept into a conflict that is more dangerous—and more thrilling—than she could ever have imagined.

Robin Hood has spent years outwitting the sheriff, protecting the innocent, and keeping his men one step ahead of Prince John’s reach. But when he crosses paths with a mysterious archer who shoots like no woman he’s ever met, he knows she’s hiding something. Her words, her ways, even the fire in her eyes—none of it belongs in his time. Yet the more she stands at his side, the harder it becomes to imagine Sherwood Forest without her.

Mariah is torn between a past she understands in modern-day London and an uncertain future with an outlaw who has stolen her heart. But as the sheriff’s grip tightens and betrayal looms, one truth becomes clear—some choices are impossible to undo, and love, once found, is not so easily left behind.

This was TOTALLY AMAZING

I will return to write more tomorrow because this was an ARC and deserves more of a review, but I just finished binging it and I need to sleep, so just know that it was absolutely 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

More review:
Suspend any disbelief you might be inclined to carry with you into the world of Robin Hood, and enjoy this beautifully imagined tale of a modern girl caught away to life in Nottingham in the 12th century.
I read this in about a day, simply because I NEEDED to know how it would turn out. It was so fun to wait for the a-ha! moments to drop for the main character Mariah as she tries to avoid being re-named Marian (!) and interacts with an unforgettable young... butcher?
Everything about it just felt so easy to fall in line with, in spite of the fantasy-laden setup. The story was delicious, and well worth staying up a bit late for!

Thanks to Shadow Mountain Publishing via Netgalley for this thoroughly enjoyable review copy!

"She filled his thoughts. His pulse quickened at the very sight of her. Little John and Friar Tuck notwithstanding, there was no one else he'd rather be with. He wanted to talk to her, learn from her, shoot with her, protect her, laugh with her. And kiss her."

The Maid of Sherwood Forest by Sian Ann Bessey

How does Sian do it!? She is just so talented. I could hardly stop listening to this beautiful adventurous historical romance once I started. Seriously such a fun twist on time travel combined with the legend of Robin Hood!

Growing up and still now one of my favorite Disney movies is Robin Hood. I loved the Easter eggs and nods to the Disney version of the movie. They made me chuckle and were some of my favorite parts.

I loved the stolen moments between Maid Marion and Robin Hood. Their conversations and archery amongst the trees in his thinking spot. Their meet cute had me grinning from ear to ear.
The side characters of Friar Tuck, Little John, Allan, Will, Ellen, and even the Sheriff made for a complete and entertaining story!

All of the suspense, adventure, medieval time period, hidden identity...The Maid of Sherwood Forest is definitely a top read for me this year! I can't stop thinking about it. I highly recommend this one!

Do you love time travel stories? Do you love Robin Hood? If the answer to one or both of those questions is yes then you need to read this book! I absolutely loved it! Such a great story. Mariah travels back in time and meets Robin Hood. Of course everyone thinks her name is Marian so she goes with it. I liked watching her learn to adapt to the past which is so different from modern day. Robin and Mariah are so cute together, I especially loved the butcher scene and Robin helping her shoot arrows again haha. I also thought it was cool that she was an archer as well and they both helped each other through out the story. I really loved the ending. Overall, I thought this was a great story and I definitely recommend!

Holy arrow in the bullseye 🎯— reading 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙞𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩 by Sian Ann Bessey felt like strapping on a quiver of courage and leaping headfirst into legend. Mariah, a modern London sous-chef and archery enthusiast, gets pulled through time into twelfth-century Nottingham and lands smack in the middle of outlaw life with Robin Hood and his Merry Men. What follows is snappy banter, serious bow-action, swoon moments, and enough medieval kitchen mishaps to keep you giggling.

It’s the kind of story that makes Sherwood feel both familiar and brand-new again — like rediscovering a legend through fresh eyes.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨’𝗟𝗟 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘
🕰️ The time-travel twist — that wild “wait … I’m where?” moment never gets old.
🌲 A fresh take on a beloved legend — all the Robin Hood nostalgia with clever surprises woven through.
🏹 Mariah’s archery skills — a heroine who can literally outshoot the men? Yes, please.
💚 Robin’s quiet strength and dry humor — as captivating as the legend promised.
🔥 The Merry Men’s camaraderie — loyal, witty, and warm enough to make you wish for a seat by their campfire.
😂 The humor & heart — kitchen chaos, clever banter, and brave moments that sneak up on you.

𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦 (𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀!)
🎯 That first jaw-dropping shot that earns her a spot among the Merry Men.
🏰 A castle kitchen scene that doubles as a medieval Great British Bake Off.
🌙 A moonlit forest meeting that could melt even Sherwood’s shadows.
🎭 A tense tournament that’ll have you holding your breath.
❤️ A choice between safety & love that lands right in the heart.

𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦
💭 Sian blends action, wit, and warmth into a story that feels timeless yet fresh. I laughed, I swooned, and I may or may not have Googled “archery classes near me.” It’s a time-slip adventure full of loyalty, courage, and love that hits every target.

If you like a perfect blend of adventure, sweet romance, and retellings—all wrapped in a clean, time-slip twist, this book’s for you.

📖 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝟰.𝟱/𝟱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀. Beautifully written with rich world-building & an inventive spin on the Robin Hood legend. Bessey delivers her signature warmth, wit, & clean romance—she’s easily one of my go-to authors. I only docked a half star for a touch less action than expected, & wishing for just a 𝘣𝘪𝘵 more swoon. Still, it’s a story that charms from the first arrow to the last page.

While I was not overly fond of this book, I would definitely recommend it to YA readers, as well as anyone looking for a simple, lighthearted take on the story of Robin Hood, with the added element of time travel. The romance will appeal to those who enjoy a slow-burn romance with a hint of mistaken identity.

I personally felt like this story was significantly lacking in depth of any sort—making the characters and plot feel incredibly superficial. I struggled to take any actual interest in the plot because most of it seemed to progress too quickly, not leaving enough time for readers to form connections with the characters.

Honestly, the time travel element in this story wasn’t written very well, in my opinion. The way Mariah handled the situation of being thrown back in time didn’t feel very believable at times, and it left me wanting. I don’t think this will be a big deal to a lot of readers, though—I’m just more of a overly picky reader.

The romance felt a bit too insta-connection for my liking, and overall just ended up annoying me. Most of the connection and pining was hinged purely on looks since the characters didn’t even know each other at that point. Even after the characters did get to know each other better and their relationship progressed, I still found myself completely uninterested in it.

Even though I didn’t enjoy this book, you might end up loving it! The more I read, the pickier I become as a reader. I love stories with true depth that evoke raw emotions. Sadly, those are few and far between—but I will continue to search for those rare five-star reads!

Okay, this book won me over! Truth be told, I wasn’t someone who knew much about Robin Hood beyond the childhood stories, so I didn’t go into this book expecting to be drawn into that aspect of it. The cover caught my attention, and since it’s book two in McQuivey’s Costume Shop series, I decided to give it a try without knowing exactly what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised!

This installment had so much more suspense and a stronger sense of community with the Merry Men. The time travel element wasn’t front and center but was handled in a way that felt believable within the story. And best of all, the chemistry between Robin and Mariah was perfect. Their first meeting was absolutely spot on.

When Mariah goes looking for a costume for a reenactment, she doesn’t expect to be transported back in time to Aherwood Forest, where she becomes a servant and cook at the castle and catches the eye of Robin Hood himself. When Robin’s life is threatened, Mariah (or “Marian,” as they call her) feels compelled to help save him. What begins as friendship quickly turns into something more. But Mariah isn’t from this time and doesn’t even know how long she’ll stay. As she fights alongside Robin, gets to know his men, and makes friends of her own, she begins to wonder if she would dare stay back in time.

For me, the action in this one was the best part. The banter between Robin’s men was fun, the archery scenes were great, and the chemistry between Robin and Marian was everything. Robin was such a goner the moment he met her, and that might be my favorite part. You have this tough outlaw with one weakness, and it’s her. Loved this!

4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!

McQuivey’s Costume Shop strikes again! Mariah is very passionate about her work as a sous-chef and her hobby, archery, in modern-day London and after trying on a costume, finds herself back in the time of Robin Hood.

I was enamored with this time-slip romance and loved every moment of adventure, every lurch of danger, and every single interaction with the outlaw himself. There are some unique situations and twists, but I loved the gestures given from the classic tale.

Bessey does an exceptional job of drawing the reader right into the perils of the forest during this medieval time period. I could vividly picture the setting and the characters, and absolutely loved how perfectly imperfect Mariah is. The Merry Men are so wonderful–a group full of friendship, loyalty, wit and humor, and even some romantic advice thrown in there. Robin is all I was hoping for–especially when faced with threats and love.

From the cutest first-meet to the highly anticipated and swoony first kiss, I read this epic journey in a day.

Content: mild moments of peril; mild romance

Another amazing time travel!! I loved the first in the series, but this one one is by far my favorite. 😍 I always love anything Robin Hood, and this was a fantastic retelling!

It's an easy page turner, filled with action and slow burn romance, I honestly didn't want it to end! Every side character was my favorite as well, it all made the story complete and perfect.

If you've seen any Robin Hood movies, (I've only seen Errol Flynn's and I don't feel like I need to see any others 😉) then this will really feel like you're watching it play out.
I listened to to the audio some as well, and you really could just see it all in your head like the real Robin Hood!

I highly recommend this one if you enjoy a clean, medieval time travel! 🩷

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Mariah thought Robin Hood was just a legend-until time pulled her into his world and the outlaw stole her heart.

“For love, once found, is not so easily left behind.”

-THE MAID OF SHERWOOD FOREST, is dear book #2 in A McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance Series. This fantastic story is an epic, engaging, intriguing, and thrilling unique take on time-travel fiction and of the original legend of Robin Hood. Right from the beginning to the ending, I was completely wrapped up and charmed with the endearing characters, the high-stakes suspense, the clever twists and turns, the intriguing mystery, the witty banter, the dear friendships, swoony and unforgettable moments of sparkling chemistry, the tension, and bravery, and of course, the heart-racing adventure all along the way. It was watching dear characters choosing to do what’s right, wanting to make a difference, and being fiercely brave had my heart sighing. My friends, this retelling is simply delightful and is absolutely worth the dear read, any day! Dear @sian_bessey I am so grateful for the goodness, history, adventure, and heart that you weaved into this dear story, worth the read, anytime!📚❤️👌

Oh my goodness, THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤩🤩 I am a melty puddle over here, drowning in my book hangover 😂🙈this was a top favorite read this year, for sure!!!!!
Sian Bessey took a favorite hero from my childhood, and made him sooo swoony and lovable. She takes a time period that was probably not all that romantic, and makes me loooong to go back through Mrs. McQuivey’s closet to experience it myself 😂
I am a big fan of time travel books and I am a huge fan of Sian Ann Bessey… that equals obsession with this book. Seriously my friends, it was incredible. Do NOT miss this book! It is one to email to your hubby and say, “oh by the way, I NEED this for Christmas. Don’t mess it up” 😂😁

"The Maid of Sherwood Forest" by Sian Bessey is the second book in “A McQuivey's Costume Shop Romance” series. I really loved the first book in the series and thoroughly enjoyed this one as well! This time-travel romance series is so fun, and I especially love that this new book focuses on the Robin Hood legend, which is one of my favorite subjects to read about. As a huge Robin Hood fan, I appreciated the nods to the popular film versions of Robin Hood in today’s pop culture. It was great to see the familiar characters of Robin’s Merry Men in this story. It is clever how the author puts her own unique spin on the story and makes the “Maid Marian” character, Mariah Clinton, be a strong female heroine. It was so neat to see Mariah be so good at archery and even at one point help save Robin Hood and go toe-to-toe with him in an archery contest! It was also cool that Mariah could take her skills in archery and cooking from the present and use them in the past (it was interesting to see how she adapted to the medieval period). The historical details were well researched, and I felt like I was in the time period. The romance is what really shines in this book. The chemistry between Maraih and Robin is sizzling. I especially loved the ending and a certain surprise that Robin Hood aficionados will cheer for and recognize. This was such a fun story that fans of historical romance and Robin Hood will love!

Content: I give this book a PG rating. Some examples of the content: a character curses, but the words are not actually written.
TW: a person thinks they are hallucinating; physical abuse; PTSD.

The Maid of Sherwood Forest isn’t just a Robin Hood retelling…the MMC is ACTUALLY Robin Hood! It was so fun imaging Maid Marian to be a woman who had time traveled from modern day to 1193 and crosses paths with the legendary Robin Hood.

I was so intrigued with the story and anxious to see how things would work out. There were some crazy things that happened and the story sucked me in.

I loved the whole cast in this book, including the Merry Men who brought some great humorous dialogue. I loved all the different settings that gave us a full picture view of what things may have been like in that time period.

Or course I had to watch Disney’s Robin Hood with my kids afterward and I love all the nods the story had to that favorite movie.

I highly recommend this suspenseful, romantic, adventurous story!

The Maid of Sherwood Forest: A McQuivey’s Costume Shop Romance by Sian Ann Bessey is a delightful retelling of the classic Robin Hood. This is the second book in this series.

I really enjoyed this relaxing, laidback, and updated Robin Hood novel. The author took the classic story, added in another dimension with a time travel character, and created a new book that should be well received.

Mariah (Marian) and Robin were interesting and realistic characters, and the author added a few new additions to keep the story interesting, engaging, and feeling fresh. It was light, not overly complicated, and ended on a pleasant and uplifting note.

5/5 stars

Favorite parts:
- Meet cute
- The rescue
- At the stream
- Her new bow
- In the barn
- Apologies
- The end

Oh, I just loved this retelling of Robin Hood! When I was a little girl I loved watching the animated version of Robin Hood, I haven't seen many of the other adaptations, but I loved how Sian wove different parts from those stories into her retelling.

I love the how Mariah comes to be in Nottingham and her part in the story of Robin Hood. I believe she did much better at adapting to her new time period than I would be! I love her courage and strength during times of uncertainty and peril.

Robin Hood was my favorite! I loved learning more about him and his Mery Men. Learning about his background (at least in the retelling) was fascinating and I love how he was able to take situation that could have turned him bitter into something of a hero where he helped and defended others.

This is one book you definitely should read!

This is the second book in the McQuivey Costume Shop Romance series. It can be read as a stand-alone.

First of all, I’m a huge Robin Hood aficionado, so I’m incredibly picky with my Robin Hood retellings. Bessey included many of the important stories. Characters that are often forgotten were there running amuck in Sherwood; I loved that. :)
Some of the language felt off: from what Marian should be using as a modern London woman, and what the Merry Men would call certain things i.e. “food storage” instead of stores or supplies. It took me out of the story sometimes.
Despite my nit-pickiness, I did enjoy the read. This fits in great with the proper romance line from Shadow Mountain. If you go into this knowing its focus is the romance, rather than the politicking and swashbuckling adventures, I think you will be satisfied. 🏹

The Brief: Mariah heads to McQuivey’s Costume Shop for a medieval outfit. When she opens the door to show off her dress, she finds herself in the 12th century instead of her own time period. .

The Debrief: Ohmyswoonylanta! I’m a big fan of Robin Hood and this author brought all my favorite parts together to take me on the greatest adventure! Mariah hides in Nottingham working in the kitchen so that’s an adventure in itself. But stumbling into her favorite legend? That’s where the real adventure begins. The fact that’s she’s a boss archer makes it all the more epic. It’s a story of courage and overcoming the odds with the merriest of friends. I just adored every page. This is a new classic for me to obsess over again and again.

🏹all the banter of the Merry Men
🏹Mariah adapting to 12 century
🏹Little John
🏹Friar
🏹all the adventure
🏹glimpses of all my fav movie versions and yes I’m counting the Disney singing Robin
🏹sweet Ellen and Will
🏹the archery contests
🏹the banter really was FANTASTIC
🏹the swoony kiss
🏹the entire ending!!!!!

The Rhyme: Robin lives as an outlaw and isn’t sure how to fit love into his life. Can Marian let her arrow fly true and choose love amongst so much strife?

Highly recommend! It’s the story you didn’t know you needed, but you do!!! Beautiful complimentary copy. My thoughts. Kissing only.

My hopes were high for this Robin Hood tale, which was probably the reason why I found it lacking.

Mariah/Marian was not nearly as enamored of Robin Hood as I needed her to be. It's Robin Freaking Hood! Swoon a little bit more!

The romance between Maid Marian and Robin Hood is an epic tale. This was not.

I loved seeing the merry men, but they needed a bit more character development.

The stakes needed to be a bit higher overall.

I love the time-traveling costume shop aspect of this series. It's so clever and unique.

If you feel so-so about Robin Hood in general, this is probably a book for you. If you are a Robin Hood fanatic (guilty) you might need more from this book.

I did look forward to picking this up any chance I had a free moment, so it wasn't as middling as my review might lead you to believe.

I loved this book so much! Sian’s first in the series was such a fun and original take that I honestly didn’t know how the next one could follow it up—though it didn’t need to top it, really. But then came this Robin Hood-inspired story, and I’m so happy to say it was just as enjoyable. I had the best time reading it from start to finish.

Mariah and Robin were seriously adorable, and I loved how their story played with the legends in fresh, unexpected ways. The twists were fun, the chemistry was great, and it just hit all the right notes. I’ve been deep in a reading slump lately, and I have a feeling this book might’ve pulled me out of it. That alone makes it a win for me.

This is my first time reading a novel by Sian Bessey and I must say that I am very impressed with her work! I think anyone who enjoys historical fiction and dual timeline novels will indeed enjoy it. I have to admit I was enjoying every page of this novel! You have to admide the strengh of the main character Mariah afrer she is thrusted away from her modern day life and dumped into the life and times of Robin Hood. Overall this book was a very fun abd enjoyable read.

I received an arc copy from Netgalley and all opinions are of my own.

Oh, I couldn’t put this book down! The Maid of Sherwood Forest is such an intriguing, romantic, and spellbinding story. Of course, I’m familiar with the legend of Robin Hood, but I knew little enough of the specifics that many parts of this book were surprises to me. I enjoyed the characters and want to visit all the places featured in the story. Crossing my fingers for more books in this series! 4.5/5 stars

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This was such a fun and adventurous story!
I loved Disney’s Robin Hood growing up, and the first book in this series, so I was excited to jump in.

The settings were lovely and I am now craving a trip to the forest. Most characters were immediately endearing. A few were perfectly depicted villains.

I don’t want to say too much and give anything away, so I will just say, if you like anything about Robin Hood and time skip romance, you’ll love this one!

Thanks to the publishers for the chance to read an advance copy.

Stop what you are doing and go read this book if you love a good time travel Robin Hood retelling. And if you have never read a time travel Robin Hood retelling, then read this book anyways because it's perfection. I absolutely loved this story. It's honestly one of my top reads so far this year; it was THAT good. It was just such an easy book to get lost in and read. This is a proper, or sweet (with only kissing) historical romance book. I LOVED the plot and how the two characters meet. It was a little insta-love like, so if you aren't a huge fan of that, keep that in mind. But I personally enjoy those types of romances and found it just added to the story that much more. The writing was so good and I seriously cannot wait to read the next book in this series. Yes, this is part of a series; however, it can 1000% be read as a standalone since it's really a completely different story, timeline, and characters than the last one. Sian Ann Bessey has now become an auto-read author for me after this one, and I'm so excited to see what's next.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, which in no way impacts my review or feelings of the book.

I absolutely adore this story! I loved the characters! Good grief who know I would actually care about what happened to an Adler Snake? I think this author really knows how to bring even the creepy to life and understandable. It was just delightful! I was drawn to the magic side of it and that is a hard sell for me! Loved it all!

Thank you to Shadow Mountain and NetGalley for this story, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

A retelling of Robin Hood with time traveling from modern times to Nottingham. From a dress shop in London in modern times to opening a door and entering a kitchen in Nottingham. I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic tale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Maid Marian is skilled in archery and rarely misses the mark. A surprising skill for someone who is a sous-chef in modern times. Mariah Clinton whose name was heard as Marian when she becomes a servant in the kitchen of the Sheriff of Nottingham. What a fast-paced read.

Sian Ann Bessey has done it again! The second novel in her McQuivey's Costume Shop Romance series comes out November 4, and it’s so much fun. This is the story of Mariah Clinton, sous chef and archery aficionado in present-day London. While trying on a medieval kirtle in Mrs. McQuivey’s costume shop, she suddenly finds herself in a castle in Nottingham in 1163 working as a kitchen maid. Coming to terms with her new situation is complicated by finding herself in the midst of a story she thought to be only legend.

I enjoyed this book so much! It reminded me of Howard Pyle’s The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which I read a few years back. It uses a lot of the same stories and characters from that rendition. I love that it took that same fun, adventurous tone but then gave the characters and storylines more depth.

If you’re looking for a fun, cozy story that leaves you wanting to travel to medieval England, look no further. The setting is so well drawn, and the characters are such fun. I also love that there’s a sense of time-travel closure for our time traveler, and I’m not left wondering too much about the life left behind.

Thank you Shadow Mountain for the gifted ARC.

NOT FOR ME.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM || TIKTOK

I’m just going to accept that this series isn’t for me and take a step back. I don’t think the writing was bad or anything along those lines. The story itself was lacking something that made me want to keep picking it up. It felt like I was reading any movie or historical article I’ve read about Robin Hood without adding anything new. The romance is also a bit insta-lovey and I wanted a deeper connection between them.

So while not for me, I know plenty of people who will love this more than me and I hope you do.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low

A little bit of spoilers…. I loved every single thing about this book except the time traveling part. But before I get to that I first want to say that Robin Hood is my favorite legend/hero of all time. Because of this, I have read a lot of retellings about him. I think that this author nailed his story in this book. Robin’s character, all the plot points/adventures, the camp in Sherwood Forest, the merry men, ALL of that was perfect. The forest was magical, the merry men were witty/hilarious/lovable and the classic adventures were heart pounding. But in my opinion the 21st century talk ruined it. Because every time Mariah spoke of the 21 century, it brought me out of the story. It was just jarring and a little cringy. It didn’t fit with the classic Robin/Marian love story that I love so much. I hated that such a big part of the legendary romance of Marian and Robin was him trying to believe she was from the future. It killed me! But every single other part I absolutely loved. Their soul mate vibe is my absolute favorite and I love the theme of loneliness. The author is a fantastic writer too. It is definitely worth the read even with my opinion on time travel.

SPOILERS and book notes:
Nottinghamshire 1193
Mariah is 5’8” green eyes and brown hair is a chef and an expert archer. “What’s yer name?” “Mariah Clinton.” “Marian o’ Clifton, ya say?” She got plopped into the sheriffs castle kitchen. Richard lionheart is over seas . And king John is feared. Much the miller told Robin that greedy Bishop of Hereford was traveling to the sheriffs castle through Sherwood Forest. So they attacked! Robin with his bow and Little John, Will Scarlett, and Allan a Dale were already wielding their staffs against the other guards’ blades!! The gangs all here! Friar tuck too! Two dozen merry men live in the forest: “Their relaxed postures were a testament to the peace found in the forest. Every man had arrived broken and fearful, often escaping an unjust punishment. Here they’d been offered hope and had found purpose. It was a powerful combination—“ Robin disguises himself a butcher to distribute gooses to the poor. Marian has to work as a kitchen girl serving food by climbing tight spiral stair cases. Baking meat pies with just a fire oven! Robin is such a flirt! Saying the bonny ladies get it for free with a kiss. So they kiss!!! In front of an unruly crowd!!! Aw! Marian was so brave and risked warning Robin of the sheriff. He said; ““Fear not, Maid Marian,” he said softly. “In this instance, at least, the Sheriff of Nottingham has met his match.” Ellen is so sweet and Marian’s friend in the castle. She has a stutter and her brother Will protects her from people that threaten to cut her tongue. Aw! Will scarlet!!! Aw! Robin is searching for Marian and making his men do it too but can’t find her. Aw! The sheriff put on an archery tournament and Marian is entering disguised as a man so she can win the money to help Ellen’s and wills family! Ellen helps her. Robin enters disguised as well! He is so impressed with this “boys” skill! They are in the final three when they discover each others identity! Robin begs her to miss on purpose so the sheriff doesn’t discover her identity. And she trusts him and does! And then he says he will win it to protect her but she can have the bag of coins. Nooo!!! He won but then got captured helping Marian escape! Marian shot an arrow at the prison cart with her ribbon on it to give Robin a message of hope. Something Marian needs to realize that the worst that could happen when prideful in 21st century is loss of a good review. But here: “it was time she realized that a grievous error in judgment in the twelfth century could mean losing one’s life.” Marian, Ellen and the merry men are going to rescue Robin! They rescued him from being hanged! And escaped! Marian had to shoot a man though and she is grieving: ““Why am I always so alone?” Her voice broke on the whispered words. “Not this time, Marian.” With a gasp, she raised her head. She hadn’t realized she’d spoken the painful words aloud. “Robin!” And he said that he is in her debt: ““If it’s all the same to you,” she said, “I would much rather have your friendship than your obligation.” He smiled, and his eyes filled with warmth. “It would be my honor, Maid Marian.” In this version Robin is from Lockley and he is wanted for shooting a kings deer and accidentally shooting a man who threatened his life. She tells him of the future! ““Friar Tuck taught me that there is no shame in grieving for the loss of meaningful relationships—no matter how the loss occurs. During my early years as an outcast, he took it upon himself to repeatedly remind me that Jesus wept over the death of His loved ones.” I love the place the merry men live! “All the medieval reenactments Mariah had participated in had been held in castles or open fields. This sanctuary in the forest, with its leafy protection and atmosphere of unity and friendship, was extraordinary.” And the live in a comfortable cave with furniture and food storage and chickens and goats! The women are staying! Marian as the cook and Ellen as the milkmaid! The men build Marian an oven! They are all like big brothers to Marian and Ellen. Except for Robin of course hehe. Aw!!! Robin bought her her own bow! And helped her get over ptsd of shooting someone by surrounding her while she shot! “Robin’s chest pressed against her back, his left arm circling her waist. As she pulled on the string, his right arm moved in unison with hers. She released a breath. Her emotions were as taut as the bowstring, but in his embrace, she felt safe and inexplicably cherished.” Marian’s biggest trial in life is loneliness. She says she can’t love him even when they kiss bc she isn’t the “real Marian”. Ugh I don’t like this conflict! They meet poor knight “Sir Richard of the Lea,”!! To save his son he mortgaged his lands and is about to lose them to the bishop. Robin will help! They paid the bishop with the sheriffs own gold that they stole previously. Yay! Ellen and David are a couple! Will the older brother is protective lol. Little John and Robin come home to Sherwood to the smell of baked bread! Aw! King lion heart! The sheriff taking Marian! Robin a free man asks her to be his bride! They get married in their grove right away! The costume shop lady appears with a beautiful medieval dress to married in and said she can stay forever. “Interestingly, she didn’t appear in any of the original legends, and no one seems to know exactly who she was. She’s been portrayed as a Norman noblewoman, a ward of Prince John, and a Saxon who knew Robin from childhood. Some historians claim she lived in Sherwood Forest and was an even more skilled archer than Robin himself.” “I am the Maid Marian in the Robin Hood legends.” He smiled. “I have known that for a very long time.” “You have?” “Aye. When we first came to this grove, you told me that Maid Marian was my one true love.” He trailed a line of soft kisses up her neck. “That meant it had to be you.” “Oh,” she breathed. He chuckled softly. “Happiest of wedding days, my darling. I love you more than you will ever know.” “And I love you, Robin.” His lips, now hovering close to hers, turned upward. “Ah, Maid Marian,” he whispered. “Though I hardly deserve it, I knew that too.”

This story is such a unique twist on the life of Marian (Mariah) and how she crosses paths with Robin Hood. The author does a great job at making it relatively believable. I haven't watched or read many retellings of Robin Hood so I think I was a little bit at a disadvantage to some of the quips and comments throughout the book. That being said this book really is quite an adventure that goes from the kitchen at the castle to Sherwood Forest. I loved the archery aspect (obviously necessary) and I thought Robin Hood's character was well written. It made me wish I was right there with them in the forest. The last few chapters held a lot and I wish that it was a tad longer. But there is a fun surprise at the end for us time travel fans! I am eager to read the next book in this series.

Four Stars.
