A new chapter is opened in the Sohma family's story--and the rumors are true! Kyo has indeed met Kyoko in the past...and when he did, she told him the story of how she met Tohru's father, which he then tells to us: Tohru's birth...the truth about her mother and father...Yuki's declaration of independence...

Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.
In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.
According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.
I love this manga so, so, so damn much! The relationships, the way people take care of each other, the gentle gestures. Just everything, really. Fruits Basket is definitely one of the best mangas I ever read and I don’t want it to end. >_< Jeez! This volume was so emotional!
Thoughts to the highlights of this volume:
- I had absolutely NO IDEA how Tohru’s parents got to know each other and therefore soaked up their background story like a sponge! Those two!! GAH! I love them! They were such an unconventional couple! My favourite part of their first meeting: Katsuya seeing right through her anger and stating that she just wants to be loved. T_T
- THAT SUPER CASUAL MARRIAGE PROPOSAL!!!! Excuse me while I die! <333
- The death of Tohru’s father and how broken her mother was. I could relate so much and my heart broke for her. AND I was in tears when Kyoko remembered that she has someone to live for. Little Tohru... T_T
- Yuki and Machi!!!! <333 I. SHIP. IT.!!! I love that he notices her and that she’s so flustered because he pays attention to everything she says or does! If things continue like that I might ship them even more than I ship Kyo and Tohru and that says quite something!
- Haru and Rin! He’s so gentle and tender with her. Gosh, he loves her so much it already hurt to see him touch her face while she was asleep. I really hope there will come a day when they can be together.
- Akito needs to get out of the way. Seriously! What he did to Yuki just because he told him the truth and forgave him? I really dislike him more and more! *grrrrr*
I'm going to ignore the fact that Tohru's dad was in his 20s when he fell in love with and married Tohru's mom, a middle school kid. I think my head would burst if I think on it too much so I'm going to pretend they were a couple of years apart. In that light their story was cute but also so very tragic. It was nice to see this flawed and very human version of Tohru's mom since most of the time we only see the perfect version of her that Tohru remembers. She's always on a pedestal that it's hard fo remember she was also human and had her own struggles in life.
Kyou and Tohru's love story is shaping up nicely and the masochist side of me likes that it's going at a snail's pace. A close favourite is Haru and Rin's story with its tragic, Shakespearean undertones. I really do hope they end up happy together. I remain less than convinced about Kureno and Uotani's story.
The highlight, as always, is the trio relationship and individual narrative arcs. Yuki seems little more at peace with his feelings for Tohru. He's also slowly healing his psychological scars and learning to love past the trauma; something Akito is obviously not happy with. Kyou's struggles with his feelings for Tohru is slowly coming to a head. It can't be long before he gives in and accepts that they belong together. I wish Tohru would be a little more proactive in searching for ways to break the curse. But she's doing so much already healing everybody and single handedly taking care of her 12+ kids that it's hard to fault her!
I love this series and Kyoko and Katsuya's relationship, but removed a star because no 13/14 year old should ever be dating an assistant teacher. Honestly no 18 year old should be either but at least its legal (not including the ethical responsibilities a teacher has to their job).
*Gets a spork, goes to the Corner of Woe, and begins hacking away* (Don't try this at home, kids!) My God! What a depressing volume! I was emo throughout most of it... IF NOT ALL!!! This book centers around Kyoko and let me tell you, it's going to make you want to sit down in front of the TV screen watching mediocre shows with a big bucket of ice cream, cookies, and donuts on top! It's just THAT depressing. Not to mention, once you get pass Kyoko's story, you get the sadness from Machi's story. And if THAT'S not enough, you then get Akito thrown in your face! So it's like, sad, sad, then BOOM! You're pissed off because of the asswipe! -_-" Can I kick someone? Please? It'll make me feel so much better. I need to feel better right now because I'm just about ready to throw someone into traffic. Ugh! So... blah!!! I've never felt more depressed or pissed in my life! (I have. I just like being over-dramatic. X3) Man, this is awesome! I love things that can make me so upset! It shows just how awesome something really is! XD
Sensei, you are my love! I love you! Te amo! Je t'aime! Daisuki! And all them other ones that means you are sexy and I think you are amazing. Seriously, Takaya-sensei keeps throwing things together so well that it adds so much to the DRAMA! This is some good drama! Whoo! *Sugar High* Totally making pancakes after this! X3 Anyway, where was I...? Um... oh yeah! I love how she creates back story! I love learning about these wonderful characters and the fact that this one focused more on Kyoko, well, it just made it that much more epic. If you thought you knew everything there is to know about Kyoko then think again. Man, that story was so engaging (and sad) that I was literally eating it up as if it were pancakes! (Man... I'm really craving pancakes.) This mangaka is amazing! I can't stress it enough. And I do love her clothing designs for Rin! That girl can dress! I wish I had access to clothes like that but... I live in the middle of nowhere so it's hard to find. Nothing like online shopping, ne? ^_^ Takaya-sensei, keep doing a wonderful job!
Kyoko and Katsuya. Best. Couple. Ever. I'm not joking! They just have such a wonderful relationship together. We all know how badass Kyoko was. We've been seeing bits and pieces of her throughout the entire manga. But this is the first time we have fully seen how sexy Katsuya, Tohru's father, was! I love how he's not exactly very gentle. Yeah, he just goes up and says it how it is. I love that in people. It's amazing! (Not sure how to take his lolita complex. XD) My favorite part of him is how he takes insults as compliments and it pisses Kyoko off. It's hilarious! They are just so cute together so when you see the tragic stuff, it hurts all the more. Her story hurt me just as much as Kyo's did. *Sighs* I love these characters. Another part of the story that made me sad was Machi. We see more of why she acts so strangely. It's, of course, the circumstances that her life has her in. Seeing her feel useless was... unsettling. But it helps you grasp her situation a bit better. She does seem to be changing herself, though. Especially when it comes to Yuki. He seems to be helping her a lot even if it's very subtle at the moment.
Last part I want to talk about... AKITO! DAMN THAT BLOODY NO GOOD FU--*Insert various curse words here* I can't stand him! How can anyone!? I don't know how they do it but please, let me in on your secret! I don't think I can handle him for much longer! He's so evil! He went--no. I can't say it! But it was another thing that makes me want to burn him alive! You think that he would be a little more... oh, I don't know... CIVILIZED!!! Ack! I have a headache. I needs me some sugar in order calm my nerves. (Where's the bloody pancakes when you need them!?) Whatever! Moving on! Momiji is so adorable. I love how he's always helping Tohru out. Like with what he did with Kureno! That was cute. Kureno better shape up soon or I'm going to kick his ass as well! >_< Kyo has... more secrets than he's telling people but I can't say much about him. It's too spoiler-y. I'm just... concerned. Hmm... anyway... Hatori... looked... so... HOT!!! in that outfit of his! Dude, I think I fell in love with him~ AGAIN! Is that possible? But oh! He had a slip of the tongue! Tee-Hee-Hee!!! X3 On a final note, Haru is so wonderful. So gentle. Hold me, darling! I'll please you in more ways than on--*Gets shot* ...I really need to find the ass who keeps doing that. -_-"
Despite the fact that I went insane (again) in this volume, I really did enjoy myself. Getting to know Katsuya and Kyoko more was very nice. The bit with Machi was also nice. And just seeing all of the other characters growing into something much more than they already are is always something I am willing to accept! I want to see more and I cannot wait to get into the next volume! Do yourself a favor and read, man! Read till your heart explodes from all the cute, depressing, wonderful, agonizing, amazing content of this series. *Dreamy sigh* I wants me a Hatori. No. Haru. No. Kyo. No... SOHMA! (Minus asswipe.) Yeah... I'm hooked. This is my crack and I'm sucking it all up! Now, I think I'm going to make me some pancakes because I needs something to calm my nerves before I continue on. I know it's going to contain some of the stupid in the next volume and I can use all the sugar I can get. -_-" Join me after the pancakes! (SHUT UP ALREADY!!!) <3
I'm crying forever! Crying, weeping, brokenhearted, grieving, crying... this book slaughtered my emotions from several different directions, and I went through half a box of tissues.
This volume tells the story of how Tohru's parents met and fell in love, and how her father died. Kyoko, Tohru's mother, went through intense grief when Tohru's father died, and the only thing that saved her from despair was her little girl Tohru. I'm crying forever.
Kyo wrestles with his feelings for Tohru, and has a nightmare that he takes as a sign from the dead.
Yuki becomes closer to his student council friends, especially the weird girl, Machi. Yuki decides to go home to the Sohma house for New Years celebrations, and accidentally angers the evil Akito. So much drama and domestic violence! Agh! So then I was crying again, because I want my Yuki to be safe, and it's just terrible and upsetting to see him abused.
As an adult reading Kyoko's story, Katsuya is creepy af. He's 22, she's 14. That's weird. Their relationship never took on a creepy vibe, but it gives me the jeebies nonetheless. Like, I now understand why the Honda family was so against them. But I love them (cause nostalgia and manga) and Tohru is definitely the cutest in the universe.
This volume was a lot about people understanding themselves and what they're capable of. Yuki finding his voice, Machi making choices, and Kyoko in motherhood. I adore them all.
Akito really needs to be kept away from glass, my goodness.
TW: adult/minor relationship, physical abuse, emotional abuse, gaslighting, suicidal thoughts, injury, violence, abandonment, death of parent (and husband), blood, pregnancy
Well damn. I knew vaguely about Kyoko's backstory, but having read it here, geez. She's literally like 14/15 when she met Katsuya. And yet I still ended up crying at seeing her so broken after he died. That said, it seems odd for a cold to kill someone in modern day Japan. Oh well. As for the rest of the volume, we finally get some insight on Machi, and Akito is an asshole again! Tohru doesn't seem to be making much progress on breaking the curse, unless she is and even she doesn't know it, who knows. I don't enjoy that this series seems to like putting high school (or middle school...) girls into relationships with older men. Stop it. Tohru, you would be a better friend for telling Uo to give up, even if it hurt. But as the author says 'age is just a number!'. Hm. Once you're an adult, maybe. It shows its age in this way...

I'm not crying, you're crying. I forgot how sad Kyoko's past was until reading this volume. It was interesting to learn that Kyo was privvy to such delicate information and learned all there was about Kyoko and how she had met Katsuya, Tohru's dad. I was straight up bawling because I could feel her pain and suffering when she thought she was alone in the world after Katsuya died and it made me wonder if I'll be like that if my husband were to leave me suddenly? I was also intrigued with how Kyoko reacted when she found out she was pregnant and I think there are a lot of women who have the same question when presented with the knowledge of being a new parent, but the way that Katsuya answered her made me realize that so long as you have a loving partner like him, then you'll be able to set aside those fears and uncertainties.

Pretty good! Seeing the story of Tohru’s parents is in a way also like seeing Tohru’s backstory. She has several qualities from them both. I’m also bummed Tohru’s dad hasn’t appeared more. He seems like an interesting character, and his death is made sadder knowing the audience and Tohru have known essentially nothing about him. At least he’s on the cover of the second to last volume. There’s a nice chapter about Yuki and Machi, and one with the second New Year’s Eve in the main Fruits Basket story. A lot can happen in a year! I notice a theme developing, first with Yuki and now with Kyoko and Machi, of needing to be needed.
I just finished reading this volume of Fruits Basket 3 hours ago. Surprisingly, I kinda liked this volume. I haven't read Furuba since last year, so I completely forgot the plot, the characters, and everything else. XD And I normally complain about Natsuki Takaya's drawing stlye- after she injured her drawing hand (during the seventh or eighth book, I think).
In a few parts of the book, I caught myself thinkking,"Hey, this image wasn't drawn so horribly...it kinds resembles her old drawing style". And at the end of each chapter, I felt that the characters are developing a lot- it just kinda makes me feel happy.
For instance: Yuki Sohma. I had always regarded him as the silent character that kept all his problems to himself and didn't open up to anyone, due to "problems" in his childhood. Yet in this volume, I find him laughing, joking and chatting with the other members of the student council, like Makeru Tanabe (I think that's his name, off the top of my head right now XD). He's even developed to the point where he's not just worrying about making friends himself- but caring for others (Machi). I thought,"The members of the studnet council form a very nice group, actually. They're kinda looking out for each other".
The story of Tohru's mother and father was sad. They were such a great couple, but their marriage and happiness was, unfortunately, short-lived. Poor Tohru was only maybe 3 years old when her father passed away. -->And it was from a freaking cold?!? How'd he die from a cold? XD

OMG SOB FACTORY!!!!! Most of this volume is dedicated to Tohru's parents, Kyoko and Katsuya - how they met and they're life together. I was a complete mess!! Katsuya is sooo handsome!!! But, that wasn't why I was a mess.
I love the way Kakeru and Yuki interact with each other! Hilarious! Kakeru sure is a fun character!
Of course, it ended with me seething at Akito, but once again, Ayame saved the day and had me laughing in hysterics! I really love Ayame beyond all reason!!
The bulk of this story was the tragic yet romantic story of Kyoko, Torhu’s mom. It was once more a beautiful volume. However, I always find it sooo weird that in these older Shojo manga girls fall in love with ADULT men. Seriously, what man in his twenties finds a fourteen year old attractive? Just seems gross to me. So I hope when I read older shojo manga this trend has died out.
gonna have to say anime was better on this one. i haven't watched prelude but 2x24 was adapted very well. honestly i thought some of the scenes were clearer in the anime (like there was more emphasis on the scarf) but regardless it's fruba so everything in here is amazing.
