I didn’t particularly care for the characters and I didn’t feel that the romance was well executed. The setting was neat but it wasn’t enough to make me enjoy this anymore than I did (which obviously wasn’t very much, given my rating). The art was fairly good but it was sometimes quite difficult to tell which character was speaking.
Another lovely BL - this time steeped in folklore and legends - by Hagi.
The story of the flightless messenger and his fluffy chaos-eating god is sweet and charming, well constructed and absolutely delightful.
Outcasts for different reasons, Shin and Baku find in each other the support and love needed to affirm themselves within their society of gods, semi-gods and shape-shifting creatures.
The drawings are beautiful and the story really put a smile on my face.
a messenger’s duty is to care for and protect the god they’ve been assigned to. the ability to fly helps them carry out this duty, but unfortunately for shin, his wings are too small to carry him. when he’s assigned to the god of the thirty-second mountain, he’s determined to prove himself…even if the god is just a giant fur ball. suspicions about his god soon begin to arise, but he can’t believe that such a gentle god could have a dark side.
i really liked this! the art style was beautiful and tied into the magical story so well. i liked the system with gods belonging to different mountains and rotating out, with their messengers serving them. the storytelling was a bit hard to follow at times, though, with the flashbacks kind of just being thrown in. though they were essential to the story, i think they could have been better-placed. still, this was a great manga, and i’d be interested in reading more from the author.
This manga was so beautiful and heartwarming. We follow a young messenger and his God as they are cast out of their society and find love. This one made my heart so happy, and the art is inspiring. I highly recommend it.
Okay that was so cute!! This is the manga pick for January in my group, DTReadAlong, and it did NOT disappoint!
The plot was well paced and the characters were fairly well developed for a one volume BL manga. I loved the romance! It was so sweet and gentle and I wish I could read another 10 volumes about their adventures!
༊𓆰ʚ 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕲𝖔𝖉 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕱𝖑𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙𝖑𝖊𝖘𝖘 𝕸𝖊𝖘𝖘𝖊𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖗 ɞ𓆰;༊ Shin has been alone for most of his childhood, looked down upon because of his small wings. Unable to fly and surrounded by the many other messengers who fly in the sky, he can't remember a time he felt like he belonged. There are glimmers in his memories, moments when he feels as if there was someone, so why can't he remember? After getting into a fight with his peers, Shin is sent to become a messenger for the lowest-ranking god. The god he is sent to is a fluffy white ball with eyes and small legs, a god that possesses a power that could change everything. As Shin finds himself falling for this god, he fears he may lose him. It cannot be put into more perfect words here in the synopsis: "This is not a story of how a shape-shifting god and an earnest messenger with a short temper meet, but of how they find each other again."
"When I'm bigger and stronger, when I'm a full-fledged adult, will you be my god?" -Shin THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF ADORABLE. I'm so glad I got this manga as a gift because I loved it so much. To begin with, Shin is an outcast known for his small wings and fiery temper. I loved that Shin would fend for himself. Then there was Baku, who was the perfect opposite of Shin. Calm, quiet, and thoughtful to Shin's loyalty, bravery, and determination. This book was definitely more romance than plot. While I normally love a good fantasy plot with a dose of romance, this book was just so comforting and sweet.
Hagi has one of my favourite art styles in any manga I have ever seen. There is something so magical about the settings, scenes, and characters. Her art reminded me of Rei Tōma's art as well. The story is slow-paced, savouring the cosy atmosphere. This manga feels a lot smaller scale, focusing a lot more on Baku and Shin than the greater plot. The stakes didn't feel as high as I wanted them to, but it was still enjoyable. While I feel as if the plot part of the story came in a lot later in the story, the resolution and way everything tied together were still well done.
Baku's fluffy-god-ball form was adorable, especially his small arms and legs. I loved every scene with Shin and the fluffy creatures💘. I am still grieving the loss of Baku's beautiful long hair. Come on, I wish he had that hairstyle for the whole book😭. It was a really interesting romance. There was a lot of chemistry between them; it felt a lot more like they were falling back in love than in love, as if they always knew each other. The childhood flashbacks had my heart; it was so cool to see Shin the same as always. I wasn't in love with the side characters, but the main two had my heart.
In conclusion, it's wholesome, sweet, and cosy! I couldn't recommend it enough for anyone who wants a good romance in fantasy-manga format that lives rent-free in the mind while reading.
"Even if you weren't my god and I wasn't your messenger, I love you. You're the only one I want by my side." -Shin ✅PLOT ✅CHARACTERS ✅PLOT TWISTS
In a society of messengers, Shin sticks out thanks to his very small wings that prevent him from ever flying. A messenger’s duty is to care for the god they get assigned to, and it’s a job that requires the ability to fly. Flightless and ridiculed by his peers, Shin has yet to be assigned to a god… until now. It’s the moment Shin has been preparing for his entire life, and he’s not going to let this chance to prove himself as a capable messenger slip out of his hands.
I think this book came up under my Goodreads recommendations, and I’m sure glad it did because it’s such a heartwarming story. We follow Shin, who was abandoned by his parents and has been ridiculed his entire life. When he’s finally assigned a god, he doesn’t let the fact that they live on the furthest mountain from his home sway him. He’s determined to be the best messenger for his deity, who is an adorably large fluffy ball of fur who doesn’t speak.
I enjoyed following the lonely and bullied Shin on his adventures as a first-time full-fledged messenger. While he’s short tempered and acts before thinking, he’s sweet, caring, and has a lot of heart. I really liked him, and I was happy to see him go on a journey where he finally becomes a messenger, makes friends, and finds love.
While there’s a large cast of characters, only a few of them are fleshed out. I would normally wish that wasn’t the case, but I think it really works here. The primary focus is on Shin and his deity, Baku. Much of the story follows them in the present with flashbacks to their upbringing and how they’ve both always been outcasts. I do think Baku could’ve been developed more than he was, but I don’t have any complaints.
The artwork is absolutely stunning, and I also enjoyed the bits of extra information on the story and characters at the end. However, I wish the book was a bit longer or told across two books so that we could’ve seen the information we learn after the fact play out in real time. All in all, if you’re looking for a cute, heartwarming, feel-good story, I highly recommend adding this to your list.
This was such a sweet and interesting story. It did really well making up the world and the people involved, would love if there was even more so we could learn more about Shin and Baku’s relationship afterwards 🥰
It was cute, but the pacing was off and the romance didn't get enough time to build up in my opinion, so I didn't care much for the characters, making them unable to make me feel mushy inside. It had potential and the aesthetics were really nice, but I think I'll pass for now.
A moment of silence for those long beautiful lustrous curls that were unnecessarily cut 😭
I loved the setting and the worldbuilding of this story but I have to admit that the main characters were a bit too one note...? And their relationship felt more platonic than romantic to me..? Maybe it would've been different if the story was longer 🤷🏻♀️
This one is okay…it packs a lot of story in one volume, but the romance aspect is rushed and awkward and just lacks any emotion. Also…the weird sex manual in the extra chapter just made the whole thing even more off. Like, it was fluffy and simple and then they just had to go and throw something disjointed and pervy at the end lol
This was really cute!! I really liked Shin and Baku. I loved their story and their characters. The bonus story at the end was so great it made me want more content :( This was still a good one shot regardless.
this was really cute! I didn't realize it was a single volume story until after I started reading it so I'm kinda sad we're not getting more to this story, but overall a very cute fantastical story!
I just want to hug Baku in his fluffy-ball form, PLEASE. Imagine taking a nap there... Heaven... My favorite characters were the three annoying little kids, I love them.
