I’m intrigued with how the GI Joe books and Transformers will interact in the future. The Scarlett book seems disconnected from most of what came before, but has some pretty kinetic action. Destro, by comparison seemed to have a stronger vision. Cobra Commander continues to be the most compelling character and his brief appearances are scene stealing.

The Nobel laureate has amassed a wave of critical acclaim that also seems to hold out in what is actually being read by a good swath of the public market. Could I have done a bit more reading into the ideal way to enter her oeuvre? Undoubtedly, but the book was so conveniently stacked beside me while holding a sleeping infant. There's only so much trouble I'm willing to incite for my reading.
Novel seems a too ill-fitting word for this experimental set of vignettes. Ostensibly a meditation on the colour white, Kang also uses this piece to examine the death of her newborn older sister in the first hours of her life. A middle section of the book even imagines what her sister's life might have been like had she survived and concludes on the note that her sister's existence would preclude Kang's life entirely.
I can get down with the themes of loss and grappling with a familial trauma that touches you only in its ripples down through generations. I'm also happy to mess around with some funky story structure and experimental writing. Nonetheless, The White Book feels just slightly out of my reach. The chapters bring to mind poetry in their brevity and eloquence. Words, their placement and spacing all have meaning, but I'll be damned if I caught it all.
Not really for me, but I can appreciate the craft and ambition. If nothing else, I like to give a nod when an author takes a big swing, even if it is a personal miss on my read. I'd be keen to see what her other works are like and where I should go next. I'm happy to take suggestions!...more

This is smarter and has better character work than a DC zombie book has any right to be. With that said, Tom Taylor does pretty regularly knock whatever he’s writing out of the park.
Definitely a worthwhile apocalyptic horror series. ...more
