Each story is told in first person through the eyes of the protagonist, her reflections, her emotions as she moves through past, present and future.
The wife whose husband is obsessed with their attractive young tenant; the woman both fascinated and repulsed by her overweight room-mate’s confidence in exposing her body; a mother who discovers her teenage daughter’s sexy, online photos; the former-model who is forced to accept age and the ‘thickness’ of her once sought after body; the non-fiction, and award winning story of a daughter reflecting on her relationship with her strict and stoic father, learning in the end, how his snobbery teaches her to survive. And so many more.
These women are all of us, maneuvering through the paths in an attempt to understand, self reflect and come to terms with our choices.

Taught me a bit about Yup'ik culture and life in Alaska. It is a timely read with some historical references and social justice issues that makes you think. It's a well crafted story but a bit long and a bit repetitive in some areas with the long trek. ...more

Now, here is the one thing that baffled me - the main character, in my opinion was not realistic. I realize she was educated through books, which was great. But I never saw the raw, wildness of a person who grew up in isolation and was socially ostracized.
I saw someone who was smart, somewhat sophisticated in her language and considering she had been abandoned so many times, I did not feel her pain. I did not see depth in this character.
Otherwise, it was a good summer read. Entertaining for sure....more

The subtle references to the injustice and horror of the time still surface and makes you live through the experiences of Washington. The story moved and continued to capture my interest until the end. There were some unclear situations that were loose ends that were not believable, eg.the octopus. But it's a great read. ...more
