Alondra, one of our long time members thought it would be fun to have a thread where we tell each other real-life horror stories-things that happened to us or our families. I thought it was a great idea, so here we are!

I'll even start us off!

I recently told this story to my fellow moderators. A man that I worked for in the late 80's chopped a guy up and threw the pieces in a local river. I worked side by side with this guy for quite a while and never had a clue he was capable of such a thing.

Sherri Onepony | 36 comments Char-OMG are you serious? You worked alongside a killer that choped someone up ? That sounds deliciously scary! When did you find out ?

Sherri Onepony | 36 comments when I was in the fifth grade I was alone at home about four hours after school. I would invite my friends to hangout (all older than me) we had a sceance once with a big candle in the middle of our circle in the hall(no windows so no light) they called on someone ->a big cold wind rushed through the hall and something scratched my face then we all screamed. There was no open windows in the apartment and anyway we were closed in the hall with no windows. The air was a fridged rush like cold to the bone. It still bothers me when I think about it.

Boucle | 6 comments There was this young man, living in the village where I usually go on holiday. This village is a tiny and very old village in the middle of the mountains in France, and there are only around 200 people living there. Everybody knows everybody. Anyway, this young man was a neonazi and there was a huge nazi eagle above his door as well as nazi artefacts in his flat (that was discovered later by the police). One day in fall, he disappeared, about 15 years ago. The police found his body in the forest, he had been shot with a hunting rifle. To this day, the police does not know who killed him. It's probably someone from the village, maybe even someone I know. And the plaster around the eagle is still hanging today above the murdered man's door.

About a year after I took a job elsewhere. I was stunned!

I do have one more. When I was about 5 years old or so, a young boy went missing, his name was Danny Croteau. For years rumors circulated that it was a local priest that was responsible. About 20-25 years later, the priest who was hospitalized, confessed to the murder. This is only one of the things that turned me off religion.

Sherri Onepony | 36 comments I am not religious, I am spiritual. I have a beautiful relationship with my God. He knows me and knows I like to read horror stories . I am twisted and That's the way He made me. I love Him and worship Him and He spoils me with His love and by giving me what I need and even sometimes just stuff I want. Everyone has a skeleton in the closet, I just wear mine proudly ༒

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments I had sleep paralysis once when I was about 15. It was extra creepy because my best friend & 2 family members had claimed to see a demon in our house. Around that time I dated a 17 year old girl that told me she had a Satan's Book of Spells (not in GR for some reason) that she couldn't get rid of or destroy. This all happened in Salt Lake City, UT in the early 90's.

Just that one I posted on the other thread. The only scary stuff that has happened to me, is real life stuff. Dogs chasing me as a kid; gangs threatening me and my friends with guns; you know, normal kid stuff. 🤦🏾

Ian Truly scary situation…

After giving my daughters some money for their birthday’s I came home from work and my wife told me that she needed £1200 ($1500) from me as she had just ordered some new furniture (totally not needed) online through some unknown company on the internet. My blood sorta went…icy cold, especially when I looked at the sad state of my bank account.

Does that count? 😁

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments @Ian - depends on who makes the furniture. It isn’t Maxinomoticon, is it?

I grew up outside of Chicago. That was the norm.... That and the cold are why I am now in the south.

Ian Ok, this one is completely true, but more supernatural than horror.

We used to live in a lovely little house which was next to a new housing estate that was built on an old cemetery. Anyway, about 25 years ago we were going out for the night on the town so my mother came over to look after our 1 year old daughter for the evening. At about 11pm she went upstairs to check our daughter was safe, sound and fast asleep. Anyway, when she entered the room she said that she saw her own father’s ghost just smiling and standing over our daughter in her cot…he was a dark figure but had a radiant glow about him and stayed for about 30 seconds before disappearing again into the ether. My mother was convinced that she had seen a ghost and swears that she hadn’t raided the drinks cabinet earlier in the evening. 😊 We didn’t worry about the visitation happening as the spirit appeared to be a positive force, but also not convinced that the lights weren’t just playing tricks and it was all imaginary anyway. My mother, who is quite religious (if that is relevant), to this very day still believes that it actually happened and remembers it vividly, even though she is now 92 years old. Now how spooky is that?

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments That is pretty spooky, Ian!

I have a supernatural story to share as well. When I was in middle school (about a hundred years ago! ha) we lived in a suburb of Philadelphia. We were renting the upstairs floor and attic of an old house. The attic was converted into third story living space.

My mom swore she felt cold spots in the house and none of us liked to go up to the third story. You could hear movement up there in the middle of the night. Things going bump in the night that were bigger than a mouse, squirrel, etc.

I always got creepy vibes from the house. I don't know if it was the power of suggestion, or if I was really picking up on something else. To this day I still have nightmares about it.

Ian Hey, Theresa - I think that might be what you call a bad case of ‘getting the willy when in Philly!’ 😊

How long did you stay there for?

I know what you mean about cold spots tho…some places just seem ‘off’, don’t they? There is a big bar in Liverpool city centre that has always had a cold chill /strange atmosphere about it to me and I wouldn’t be surprised if something really bad happened there in the past. It’s like a negative force exists in the wall and the very fabric of the building itself.

Bethany | 1 comments I love hearing about real life scary encounters!

I was helping my sister move from the military barracks a few years ago. We were sleeping on an air mattress when I felt someone spinning a bracelet I had on my ankle. I thought it was my sister so I was going about to kick her when I remembered we were mature adults and didn't do stuff like that anymore. So I sat up to yell at her only to find her still asleep and no one else in the room. I told her about it once we were on the road. She said she had other encounters with, what she thought, was a child ghost.

Haha ... that's exactly what it was. We lived there the entire time we were in PA. My dad was career military so we moved about every 3 years. We were only in PA for 2 years and then he retired and we moved to Ohio where I've been planted ever since.

message 33: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 2 comments Disclaimer: not a spooky story but a real life attempted crime. When I was 18 I moved to San Francisco and thought I was invincible. I lived in between a nice part and bad part of town, and because of this I didn’t believe the area that was coined “crime ridden and unsafe” to be truly that bad since I had never dealt with anything. I decided one evening to walk through it as a short cut home. On the way I had a police car tail me and eventually pull up to me asking if they could take me home because I was in a rough part of town. I declined and informed them in a cocky manor that I was about 5 blocks from home and would be fine. I should have heed their warning as after they drove off, a brown Cadillac started to follow me. I tried to cross the street and as I did they sped up, cut me off in the middle of the road and got out. It was so fast that I didn’t realize what was happening except that I was in danger. A tall male opened his door, had me by one arm and was trying to throw me into the back seat. I kicked and screamed while bystanders watched, with no one willing to help. I luckily am writing this now as I was able to get away. I ran as fast as I could up hill until I got to a hotel lobby and called the police. That day I was humbled, and had a rude awakening that I was not invincible.

Alexis (alyxe) | 24 comments True life paranormal activity, I have communicated with the other side. Not on my own accord, but theirs.

I have lived with 3 ghosts, a father, son and daughter, that was confirmed by both my children and my now ex-husband, who did not believe in ghosts, and my across the street neighbor who would see them playing in my yard. Everyone that I talked to about them described them all the same with never telling the other person they saw them.

My current husband's mother died many years before I met him, yet I was able to tell him his childhood memories that he never told me or that he forgot.

My mother passed in Nov 2017 in NJ, I live in California, in Sept 2020 my faithful, loving dog passed, my mother never met that dog. I had a very vivid dream that they were in a meadow playing together and I visited them and they both came to greet me.

I have also had a very vivid dream of my mom, my grandmother, and great grandmother, grandfather, and great grandfather all feasting together as we used to when I was growing up. All of them passed before I had this dream.

I see shadow people and have since I was a child. I will randomly see people walking where they shouldn't be and then they disappear. This happens day or night.

I have been told by people (some who I have never met in real life, some who have known me a very short brief time) describe me as clairvoyant.

Spooky stuff happens to me all the time, but I have learned to embrace it. However, I cannot call them, they come to me. I will have split second visions of a scenario I have never been to, but it is almost like deja vu.

I am not crazy or psychotic. I am the most down to earth person that you could ever meet. I know the difference between reality and fantasy, I am a social worker and have studied the topics relentlessly.

I am also a practicing witch/Wiccan

That's pretty cool, Alexis. It sounds like you're okay with it, since you said you embrace these things.

Diane | 178 comments WOW! Some real true life horror stories on here...nothing like any of this has happened to me....not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing????

message 40: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 21 comments I've only got one which happened to me personally but a similar thing happened to my grandmother. I think I saw either a ghost or like a time slip maybe when I was a little kid. We were living in a 1860s house in a little town in the UK and my parents were in another room while I was in the living room. By the fireplace there was this chair and I was sitting on a sofa like 90 degrees to it but a bit back. I suddenly saw this elderly woman knitting on the chair dressed in a white Victorian style crinoline type dress. As I was so small I didn't think anything of it and just chilled with her, I was not scared as there wasn't a nasty atmosphere or anything, and she watched me, almost like she was babysitting, whilst knitting. Eventually she just vanished and so far I haven't seen anything like that since.
However, my grandma was at a Bonfire Night event next to an old abandoned path which had been used from the Middle Ages onwards. She saw a man dressed in Tudor style clothing just leaning against a tree looking at them curiously before disappearing again. It was not a costumed event and the path was by that time was in a private garden owned by the family member holding the event.
I hope this was interesting to someone or someone has had something similar happen.

《Dostoevsky's Sonya》 | 18 comments So there was this one time that my brother and i were home alone (my parents were at the hospital, my mom had an emergency) and my grandmother came over for the night to babysit us. flash forward its 12.30am and we are in bed, (for some reason all three of us were sleeping in the guest bedroom idk) and everyone's asleep except for me. A couple minutes later i literally heard RUNNING (the guest bedroom is in the basement) back and forth, so like i would hear footsteps like walking in different rooms above me, and i do have dogs but they were in their CRATES. And keep in mind that we were all in one room so it wasnt one of us. My dad came by earlier to grab smth for my mom, but he said hed come back in the MORNING and this was like at 1:00 am. And even if it was my dad, the alarm would of gone off if he tried to get in, also he would of called my grandmother and told her he would be coming over sooo....
And i did think abt investigating but like thats how every white girl dies in a horror movie so i rulled that out. This also went on for abt 2 hrs, and i talked to my grandma abt it in the morning and she said she heard it too...

message 42: by Lucille (new)

Lucille Denies | 3 comments Part of what I wrote in my book "Voices." I experience it frequently, at night, when I'm asleep. I am awakened by a presence, and when I sit up in bed, I can see him: the man with the hat. He is a dark figure. I thought I was the only one, but last year I learned that there are many people who see him; I find it very curious.

message 43: by Squire (new)

Squire (srboone) | 1050 comments Once upon a time, a 3-year-old boy got shocked by a household outlet. His well-meaning father warned him not to get too close to them because the electricity could jump out of the oulet to shock you.

The child began to have nightmares about a gloved hand reaching out of outlets and blindly swiping, searching for that too-close kid to shock. It got to the point where the child would just lay as if paralyzed in bed at night (leading to problems like bed-wetting and such).

Decades later, while serving in the US Navy, the child (now a man) witnessed a bolt of electricity enter the wrist of his Chief and exit his elbow due to him working on electric equipment without rubber gloves.

The now-grown child knows that death by electricity would mean that his immortal soul would never find rest.

Ananya ⋆⭒˚。⋆ | 27 comments I have suffered from sleep paralysis for about 3-4 times.
Once I had sleep paralysis and I didn't know at that time that it is called sleep paralysis and it is actually science.
So...when I had that..I was awake but was not able to move my body like I felt that my eyes were open but at the same time they were not. I couldn't move my body, not even my head. And then, I saw a figure standing near my bed. I thought it was holding something in its hand. I felt that it was coming near my bed slowly. I wanted to scream but I was not able to do so. I wanted to call my parents but I couldn't. I was sleeping alone in my room. I wanted to call my mother but-
Then I woke up or got out of that paralysis. I was scared as hell. It was 2am at that time. The moment I woke up next morining I searched about it and then I was relieved. After that, it happened with me 2 more times but I was okay the next time as I knew what it was really.
