In my last urban development project, we adopted a participatory planning model combining expert insight with strong community engagement. We used digital platforms and gamified simulations to gather public input through interactive city-building scenarios. This allowed residents to visualize trade-offs and co-design solutions with urban planners. Meanwhile, expert panels ensured technical feasibility and regulatory alignment. We also leveraged AI-driven sentiment analysis to interpret large-scale feedback data. This hybrid approach fostered transparency, trust, and more inclusive decision-making, aligning expert knowledge with local needs and aspirations.

I think there is value in consulting a community based stakeholder group prior to broader consultation. A small but diverse group of community members will bring a different lens than consultants, staff and councillors, and can help ensure that consultation drafts and the consultation approach, achieve the desired outcomes.
