I have seen conflicts among community members happen in church outreach programs. I was not directly involved but the church leaders did realize that prompt action and effective resolution was the KEY to maintaining program integrity. They quickly established an open dialogue and encouraged church members to express their concerns. The success of the outreach program depended on full cooperation. My comment is 900 characters so I broke it up into 2 parts. Look for part 2

    1. Foster a safe environment Create a space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their opinions without fear of retaliation. This will help each team member feel valued and heard. 2. Actively listen. Sometimes, simply being heard can help reduce tension and open the door to dialogue. 3. Identify the underlying problem. Use intuitive intelligence to pick up on the emotions and dynamics that could be influencing the conflict. Ask team members about their concerns and desires 4. Search for common ground. Help the team identify shared goals and common values. 5. Establish clear roles: Make sure that each team member is clear about his or her role in organizing the event. This can help avoid misunderstandings and future conflicts.

Assume that there has been a miscommunication and/or misunderstanding. Restate the unifying principles and goals, and seek to set up a meeting to clarify.

Avoid being dragged into a dispute. Do your best to be a beacon of positivity. Don’t take sides. Only talk positively about fellow community members.

I believe that it is best to remain positive and address the issues at hand by communicating with community members. Our job is to serve our community and initiate change that benefits everyone. It is important that everyone is heard and to find a common ground where there can be compromise.
