Tuning out to tune in
- A recent favorite quote of mine from "Winnie the Pooh" is "People say nothing is impossible, "but I do nothing every day." There's so much feedback online, endless scrolls, constant videos trying to grab your attention, rabbit holes of content. This rush of content gives us a dopamine fix, and large amounts of this fix end up tiring us. This can leave us to have less energy for other tasks throughout the day. Tech also doesn't allow our minds to wonder without a specific reason. It's a constant stimulation that doesn't allow us to tune out. This is why if we want to compound creativity, we need to seek boredom. Let's define boredom as a state of mental disengagement or a lack of interest in one's surroundings or activities. Our brains have something researchers like to call a DMN, or default mode network, that becomes active only at times of idleness. During these periods, we can form unique connections, see potential contradictions, explore curiosities, and see things differently…
