Today, we announced Geospatial Reasoning, a new research effort that will leverage the power of generative AI to help gather novel insights about our world. What it does: Imagine asking complex questions about our planet—like assessing hurricane impacts or planning city infrastructure—using natural language. Geospatial Reasoning aims to provide comprehensive answers, complete with detailed plans, data visualizations, and clear explanations, all grounded in robust geospatial information. How it works: This innovative approach will use Gemini's 2.5 advanced reasoning capabilities to understand complex questions in natural language. It then will intelligently plan and orchestrate analysis across diverse geospatial data sources – including maps, socioeconomic data, satellite imagery, and your own proprietary datasets. Gemini will then synthesize information gathered from these sources and specialized AI models to deliver insightful results. Grounded by new foundation models: Key to this process is grounding the reasoning in real-world data analysis. This is powered by our specialized geospatial foundation models, including newly announced remote sensing foundation models. Trained on vast amounts of satellite and aerial imagery, these models provide deep domain understanding helping to analyze the imagery, identify features, and even respond to natural language queries about the imagery, helping ensure the Geospatial Reasoning answers are accurate and reliable.
