I had the pleasure to collaborate with Kamogelo Makhoba, a creator from South Africa, on her new podcast, Creating in Colour, a space dedicated to celebrating diversity, inclusion, and the often overlooked voices in the indie game community. I'm always happy to support and collaborate with new creators because I know how difficult it is to find that initial traction. However, anything new often has bugs to iron out. Between recording troubles and scheduling issues this episode almost didn't happen. However, I'm glad that we had patience for each other as we were both learning this new process and we were able to create this amazing collaboration. So, if you are able to have patience and understanding during those growth pains you'll be able to create something amazing. Please follow and support, Kamogelo Makhoba #clockoutat2 #borderlessstudios #indiegames

Get ready for a thrilling episode with McIsiah Kendema, CSM! Horror games, translations, and creating games that mirror our experiences are on the agenda this September 13th. Follow for more!

How I Became “The Connector” And How You Can Network Effectively in Japan Over the years, attending gaming expos, networking mixers, and volunteering at events in Tokyo and beyond, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some incredible people. Some friends have even started calling me “The Connector” and I wear that title with pride. Why? Because bringing together like-minded people, creators, and businesses is at the heart of what I do. And many folks often ask me: "Mac, how do you meet so many people? Where do I start if I want to build a real network in Japan?". Here’s a quick guide that might help: Where to Find Networking Events No matter your industry, there are platforms that make it easier to find curated events: Eventbrite (Global, US-based), Peatix (Widely used in Japan), Luma, and Meetup (Active communities in both JP and US). If you're interested, I’m happy to do a deeper dive into niche events specifically for game devs, creators, or entrepreneurs. Networking Styles: High-Energy Minglers or One-on-One Connectors? If you thrive in crowds or need solo time to recharge, there’s a way to network that suits your style. For the social butterflies: It can be tempting to attend all the events but be intentional with your time and budget. Plan your events and leave room for one unplanned gathering, you never know who you’ll meet or what opportunity might pop up. For the energy-conscious: It’s OK to attend fewer events. Set your boundaries, plan your exit ahead of time, and focus on creating 1–2 meaningful connections per event. Quality trumps quantity. Business in Japan vs. the US One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned: relationship-building takes time in Japan. In the US, business relationships can move fast—it's all about speed and opportunity. In Japan, building trust is foundational. It may feel slower, but those connections often go deeper and last longer. Understanding this cultural rhythm is key to sustainable success. Networking is about cultivating a community around your vision. Think long-term. Be intentional. Know who you want in your circle and give as much as you hope to receive. Bonus: Thank you for reading and I would like to invite you to a special side event that is happening at #IVS called Game/AI/XR/Go Global 〜 次世代エンタメを語らナイト 〜 IVS 2025. This is a great opportunity to network and find like-minded people. Thanks to MeltingHack and Alibaba Cloud you too can enjoy the best of technology. Please sign up below and if you have any questions please let me know! All languages are welcomed. https://lu.ma/znn3rdry #networking #business #businessinjapan #entrepreneurship #creative #startup #meltinghack #IVS #tokyo #japan #gaming #gamedev #gamedesign #innovation #storytelling #collaboration #teamwork #community #entrepreneurship #tokyogamejam #iIndiegamedev #borderlessstudios #gamedevcommunity #gamedev #gamedevelopment #gaming #gamingindustry Image: From Tokyo Indies

Clock Out at 2 is a 2D Toxic Work Roguelite Narrative Adventure Game that explores workplace trauma, resilience, and identity through the eyes of Celia, an Afro-Latina woman navigating corporate life. Struggling against toxic office culture, microaggressions, and unseen pressures, Celia must balance her mental health while uncovering a growing sense of unease—are the eerie creatures she’s seeing real, or just stress-induced hallucinations? Unlike most workplace-themed games that focus on comedy or satire, Clock Out at 2 blends psychological horror with real-world corporate struggles. The game portrays the invisible weight of workplace trauma, with Celia experiencing eerie, surreal phenomena that mirror the stress, racism, and microaggressions she endures. This mix of realism and surreal horror makes it a one-of-a-kind storytelling experience. The gaming industry rarely centers Afro-Latina protagonists, especially in workplace narratives. Celia’s story is deeply personal yet universally relatable, tackling themes of identity, resilience, and survival in toxic work environments. Instead of a typical "big bad," Clock Out at 2 presents a different kind of antagonist: Human Resources. In Celia’s workplace, HR isn’t there to help—it’s a looming force that enforces the status quo. Getting "sent to HR" can have terrifying consequences, adding a unique layer of tension to the game. #toxicworkplace #toxic #clockoutat2 #narrativegame #indiegame #getout #severancetvshow Borderless Studios

Ambrowskii Presents: GDC & Me (Part 2 of 3) ✨️Pt 2 Black Fest & The Gordon Bellamy Quest First I'd like to thank Trinidad Black & sponsors for hosting the #blackfest2025: A special event where people like me could be celebrated and become stronger together. Our team Borderless Studios featured a new demo of our horror visual novel Clock Out at 2! I watched with Timothy Staton-Davis & Ashley Phipps 🔜 GDC as players gave us feedback like “Ya’ll could use this [game] in therapy”, and even “It's Get Out meets Severance!” As the panels began, I got a chance to soak up some of the wisdom. I caught the end of the second to last talk, then took a break before the final one. When I returned and saw the next screen of speakers I saw a familiar name & photo: Gordon Bellamy. To hear he and the other black game dev luminaries in person was mind blowing! As I listened, I realized something: I first heard about Gordon on the Netflix series High Score, at the beginning of the pandemic. It planted a seed in my mind: “Game players can be game developers.” That seed grew & sprouted into my application to the IGDA Foundation mentorship in ‘21. Then, it blossomed into a scholarship to Indie Game Academy Level 3 program in ‘23. It began to grow fruit as I joined Melanated Game Kitchen & my team in '24. Finally, I was chosen for #gdcscholarimpact by IGDAF. I connected those dots while listening and teared up, overwhelmed with a surreal feeling of divine alignment. I shared my revelation to new acquaintance Elana Congress, who said my story was special & encouraged me to share it. Quest Accepted: Talk to Gordon I tried to talk before returning to our table, but he skedaddled🚶🏾♂️💨 before I got the chance. He invited our new generation of black devs to connect with him on LinkedIn and, though it wouldn't be the same, I resolved to send a message. On Thursday, I was contacted by Eric T Elder for an interview. Only on my way there do I realize that this Eric was the same Eric on stage with Gordon! During our talk, I recount my journey, highlighting that Gordon & the series were a big part of it. Eric commends me for consistently seeking and positioning myself to find support as a game dev, and also recommended I talk to Gordon. Later that day, I attend Queer Professionals Fireside talk, and guess who's there?! I realize this is my 2nd chance, and I am meant to talk to him. I tell him my story, and he says that it’s gonna make him tear up too! 🥲 I get to give him not only a business card, but also some of my own stickers! (Thanks Nine Levitzki for the assist!!) I also meet his amazing students Ben Elliot and Noah Elliot, and have lovely conversations with them too! Quest Complete! All of this story to say: please follow your heart, your intuition, your North Stars. You'll never know where you will end up, who will assist you along the way, and who you will become on your way there.💖 Tomorrow will be the finale: Pt 3 What to say about my takeaways✨️
