Vulnerabilities are bad. CVEs are not. It’s easy to conflate the two, but they’re not the same thing. Vulnerabilities exist whether they’re identified or not. CVE IDs help make them visible – giving defenders, researchers, vendors, and tools a common identifier to know they are all talking about the same thing. A CVE Record doesn’t make software insecure. It makes security transparent. When a product has a CVE assigned to it, that doesn’t necessarily mean the product is unsafe or shouldn’t be trusted. It means someone found a flaw, disclosed it responsibly, and made it easier for everyone else to take action. Then, technical root cause analysis with CWE can help avoid similar issues from happening again.
