📘 Congratulations to Benjamin Wood, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing in the Department of English, on the release of his fifth novel Seascraper this week. The book follows a day and a half in the life of Thomas Flett, who is visited by a mysterious American claiming to be a film director. Drawing on his own experiences growing up by the coast, Wood's latest novel was inspired by the memory of a shrimper's rig – a shed on wheels – on the beach near his home. 🔗 Read more 👇

✒️ King's College London hosted pre-event activities for the 34th Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf on 4 July. Participants visited the King's Archives to view items relating to Woolf's time studying at the Ladies Department at King's, engaged with a panel discussion on how Woolf impacts the creative arts today, and watched a performance by the Woolf Quartet 🎻 In the panel, Dr Jon Day, Olivia Laing, Jo Hamya, A T Kabe Wilson and Uzma Hameed reflected on the role Woolf’s life and writing plays in their own creative work. 🗣️ Professor Terry Lamb (University of Westminster) and Professor Jo Angouri (University of Warwick) put forward the case for promoting and valuing linguistic diversity in universities at Language Debates: The Multilingual University on 23 June. Using examples from their research across Europe, they explored how different languages are viewed as a challenge in education settings and what steps can be taken to bridge linguistic divides. 💬 'Languages are not socially and politically equal,' said Professor Angouri. 'They can be used as the arena for separating “us” and “them” – such as how the onus is on those who come new to prove good citizenship by speaking the language.' Hosted by Language Acts & Worldmaking, the event also touched on decolonising languages at higher education institutions and answered questions on 'translanguaging'. 📖 Professor Jinhee Choi's new book 'Forever Girls: Necro-Cinematics and South Korean Girlhood' Oxford University Press is out now. 'Forever Girls' is the first English-language monograph to focus on girlhood and South Korean cinema. The book is a deep dive into how the concept of girlhood manifests itself in contemporary South Korean cinema against the background of colonialism, post-colonial and post-war traumas, and modern democracy. Spanning from the teen films and male-directed works of the 1970s to the feminist-driven independent cinema of the 2010s, Professor Jinhee Choi examines how themes of sexuality, labour and leisure have been reimagined through the lens of girlhood. 🔗 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dU7fzHy5

🏆 King's College London has been awarded the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Focal Award for a new project, ADAPT-AI. Working alongside London South Bank University, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, King's Arts & Humanities & King's Doctoral College, ADAPT-AI will provide funding to recruit and train doctoral students over seven years to grow and diversity audiences in the creative economy.
