Intellectual property statistics are a valuable tool to spot and analyze trends in policy, business, and technology worldwide. Today, the International Design System turns 100. On this day in 1925, the founding treaty of the Hague System (the Hague Agreement) was adopted in The Hague. How can least developed countries (LDCs) better fight non-communicable diseases, including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions? A new WIPO-led study looks at the potential of innovation in and access to advanced medical devices and diagnostics (MedTech) to enhance prevention, diagnosis and treatment for patients in LDCs. Based on the triple helix model of innovation involving governments, businesses and academic institutions, and drawing on case studies from Bangladesh and Rwanda, the study explores challenges and highlights opportunities for MedTech innovation and access in LDCs, covering intellectual property, regulatory systems, financing, training and skills development, and more. What is intellectual property valuation – and why does it matter for technology transfer? Determining the monetary value of IP assets emerging from universities and research institutions poses unique challenges compared to traditional IP asset valuation for established businesses. Yet, from structuring a licensing deal to raising funds and managing changes in asset ownership, IP valuation is critical for successful technology transfer which turns research outcomes into societal and commercial impact. WIPO’s new “Intellectual Property Valuation Basics for Technology Transfer Professionals” equips staff in universities and research institutions with the knowledge and tools to make confident, well-informed decisions on commercializing their institutions’ valuable IP assets.
