Air ambulance lands after serious M6 crash
The crash caused long delays
An air ambulance landed following a serious crash on the M6 in Lancashire this afternoon. The motorway was closed in both directions between junction 34 (near Lancaster) and J33 (near Galgate) following the incident, which took place around 12.40pm on Sunday, causing miles of delays.
Traffic was held on the northbound carriageways to allow North West Air Ambulance to land at the scene. Delays of up to 45 minutes were reported on the M6 in both directions approaching Lancaster, but it has since reopened.
Earlier this afternoon, a National Highways spokesperson told our sister publication LancsLive: "The M6 in Lancashire is closed in both directions between junction 34 (near Lancaster) and J33 (near Galgate) following a serious collision.
"Lancashire Police are working at the scene of a serious collision on the southbound carriageway with National Highways Traffic Officers assisting with traffic management at scene and the closure point.
"Traffic has been held on the northbound carriageway to allow North West Air Ambulance to land at scene."
All lanes reopened on the northbound carriageways at around 1.50pm, according to traffic news service Inrix. At around 2.10pm, all lanes southbound reopened as well.
Inrix's latest update said: "M6 Southbound re-opened, severe delays cleared, accident cleared from J34 A683 (Lancaster) to J33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang). Previous congestion to the A6 between Galgate and Lancaster.
"The A683 towards Caton is also affected. Ongoing since 12:40 for an accident on the southbound carriageway.
"All lanes are now open on the northbound carriageway."
Earlier this afternoon, Lancashire Police said on Facebook: "We want to update you and let you know that the M6 North and South bound is currently closed from junction 33 to 34 and junction 34 to 33 due to a road traffic collision.
"We anticipate that the road will be closed for some time, whilst we assess the situation.
"In the meantime, we’d recommend delaying your journey and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination."
