FAQ

5 Things to Know Before You Buy a Soundbar...

...according to our resident TV expert Will Greenwald.

Check if your TV has ARC, eARC, or just an optical connection. Most soundbars work best over HDMI with Audio Return Channel (ARC), while spatial audio requires eARC to function properly.

Choose the right sound system for your space. A full surround setup with rear satellites and a subwoofer is ideal, but not if you can’t place those satellites next to or behind your couch. And, if you live in an apartment, a subwoofer might seriously annoy your neighbors.

Make sure the soundbar fits. If your TV isn’t mounted on the wall, measure the space between the bottom of the screen and the stand it’s on. The soundbar you’re considering might be too tall and could block an inch or two of the screen.

For the best surround sound, look for a Dolby Atmos system with height channels. Dolby Atmos soundbars tend to be more expensive, but upward-firing drivers add a vertical element to your viewing experience, making it much more immersive.

Don’t expect big bass without a subwoofer. Even if a soundbar costs more than $1,000, the nature of acoustics means it won’t be able to really shake your couch or rattle the walls on its own without a separate sub.
