Community Wildfire Safety Program

Making our system safer and more reliable

Get notified if there is an outage in your area.

Through our Community Wildfire Safety Program, we are building the electric system of the future.

Our efforts are making the system safer while allowing us to better respond to climate challenges. This work includes:

Undergrounding powerlines

Our 10,000-mile undergrounding program is the largest effort in the U.S. to underground powerlines as a wildfire risk reduction measure.

Learn more about undergrounding

System hardening

We are strengthening the electric system with stronger poles and covered powerlines in addition to undergrounding.

Learn more about system hardening

Enhancing powerline safety settings

We are using enhanced settings to turn off power within one-tenth of a second if a threat is detected. These settings are known as Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS).

Learn more about EPSS

Reducing Public Safety Power Shutoff impacts

We are working to make our system safer and improve Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

Learn more about PSPS

Managing trees and vegetation near powerlines

We are keeping trees and other vegetation at a safe distance from powerlines.

Wildfire Mitigation Plan

On March 27, 2023, PG&E submitted its 2023-2025 Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP) in compliance with California SB 901, AB 1054 and guidelines from the Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety (Energy Safety).

The 2023-2025 WMP addresses:

  • PG&E's wildfire safety programs and initiatives focused on reducing the potential for catastrophic wildfires related to electrical equipment
  • Reducing the potential for fires to spread
  • Containing the customer impact of EPSS/PSPS events

Find out if you live in a high wildfire-risk area

To share information about wildfire risk near you, we use the Fire-Threat Map. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) worked with CAL FIRE and others to develop this tool. This map shows places with a high risk of wildfires that could put people and property in danger.

    • Tier 3 areas are at extreme risk for wildfire
    • Tier 2 areas are at elevated risk for wildfire
    • Zone 1 High Hazard Zones are areas with high numbers of dead and dying trees

Clean, renewable energy you can count on

To help keep customers safe, we are using new tools to prevent and respond to wildfire risks.
