Departing in Descent is the first collaboration between James Bernard and bvdub but their creative conversation effectively started as far back as 1994 when the latter bought Bernard's Atmospherics album in 1994 when it was "mistakenly stocked" in his local house music store. He says it was and remains his favourite ambient album, so when the pair found themselves crossing paths for one night in LA years later, a collaboration was the only logical conclusion. I have always wanted to do something like this, but time constraints and outside commitments always prevented it. Since 2017, I have been fortunate enough to be able to work on music full-time as my sole career, so I figured the time was right to finally crack my knuckles and do it.

My early albums were more like compilations of random tracks I made, but in recent years, I have shifted towards conceptual albums, that have a more focused, curated feeling. This is great for creating a consistent sound from start to end. But as a listener, I have a soft spot for dynamic albums, that shift and swerve in sound, constantly surprising the listener. This is why the idea of an Audio Diary felt appealing to me, because I could just make music without any pretense or grand goal; It was just making music for the sheer joy of it, without any regard for the tracks that come before or after it. It felt like returning to my old method of working, albeit with 10 years of experience on my back!

I was expecting to create around one track a month, but during the first 6 months, I was averaging about 1 track a week. When inspiration strikes, I have learned not to fight it! I think a key part of this prolific output is because I created a consistent pattern for how and when I worked. All tunes were made after 8:00pm every evening, when it was quiet and there were no distractions. Most of the tunes were brand new and made on the spot. But I also took the time to browse through my archive of unfinished tracks and see if any of them showed potential. Tracks like 'Galatea' were started years earlier, but along the way, they hit a creative dead-end and were left unfinished. The luxury of time gives birth to many new ideas! This is why I never delete any track I work on, because they can often be the catalyst for future ideas. Everything finds it place eventually.

In the end, I made 32 tracks in total. When it came to compiling the tracks for this compilation, I simply chose the tunes I personally played and enjoyed the most over the last 12 months. I made a conscious effort not to speak to fans who had already heard them, or check play counters on Soundcloud to see which were the most popular in terms of play count. This whole concept was a personal journey, so it felt fitting for me to continue this to its final conclusion and choose the selection entirely myself. Whittling 32 tracks down to 10 for a vinyl release isn't easy, but in the end, I chose the tracks closest to my heart and placed them in a run order which I enjoyed listening to from start to finish. The end result is a new compilation album that I titled 'The Lower Lights'. Although these tracks are all quite different in terms of their individual sound, they have a surprisingly cohesive quality when compiled together as an album. I think it's a very dynamic selection and should hit the full gamut of your emotions. This isn't ambient music you can ignore; It demands your full attention and will reward you as a result. I hope you enjoy them!" - 36

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/3189/7689/files/36thelowerlightsdennishuddlestoncdlppitppastinsidethepresentambientdronelabelrecords2lp2xlp4.jpg?v=1754729001
tyresta-small-hours-lp-1
Tyresta 'Small Hours' [LP]
180 gram green splatter vinyl housed in a heavyweight matte jacket. Certainly the French title is evocative, even if we are unaware of the translation. The music itself, however, is suggestive of yet another interpretation. There is no sense of foreboding in these gentle waves of sound, but the sense of peace that follows mourning. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that in English mourning is homophonous with morning, as both speak to the promise of a new beginning, of cyclical continuity. While graced by a kindred patina, their side adds the subtle but very effective crackle of a well-loved, dusty LP that’s been pulled from the shelf after a few years; whatever sounds the grooves might have once held, they are reshaped here into an impressionistic memory of a first listen long ago. Frizzell and Séry’s remarkable long-form album Demain, dès l’aube (PITP, 2023) forged its environments from nocturnal mystery, but on Live Improvisations they offer a lucid, delicate glow that rises humbly across the loam.

Since 2018 zakè has produced an unimpeachable catalog of affecting ambient releases, both solo and as an adventurous, prolific collaborator. At least since I could pick up my parents copy of The White Album and ask my mom to put it on the turntable. So when I don’t have enough time in the week to devour all the amazing music coming my way that’s both a bummer and pretty amazing. It’s a deeper trip, and I feel it’s the logical progression from the world of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Rudiger Lorenz. Where the darker realms of Komische and Berlin School were the gateway for me into electronic and heavy synth, ambient and new age were the welcoming step into the light. There's remnants of vintage electronic music, as well as the expansive bliss of Slowdive and the rural psychedelia of the Michigan ambient-scene the band grew out of in the mid-1990s – but the band has slowly, but surely, paved their own path, and Hypha is the most unique sounding record in their catalog. When listening to this album one can't help but wonder that had it initially received a wider distribution it surely would have been considered an ambient classic of sorts.

Carl Weingarten is one of the unsung heroes of American minimalism. Even though he's been active for close to four decades, his work is just now starting to receive the praise it deserves. On ”Living Ín The Distant Present” slowly shifting synth patterns is joined with his signature guitar playing – a tranquil, stretched out sound that blur the lines between played and processed, occasionally sonically closer to violins or flutes than guitars. Incredibly sparse and evocative, there's a tasteful zen-quality to these 12 tracks. Weingarten's compositions appear both timeless and tranquil.

”Living In The Distant Present” bridges the gap between the most cosmic krautrock of the 1970s, the experimental American new age music from the 1980s and modern day minimalism such as Windy & Carl and Christopher Willits. Its four pieces were selected from more than two dozen sketches born out of experimentation in the quiet hours, and refined through Frizzell’s signature treatments, which conjure new worlds from antiquated means.

“Caelum (No. 2)” is led by a cycle of breathy, mournful French horns that convey a wistful kind of hope, and a serene image of the infinity through which every soul passes. During its progression over nearly half an hour, bristly field recordings and faint harmonic textures provide graceful variation, creating the sense of life on a collapsed cosmic scale. “Caelum (No. 4)” features frequent collaborator Kévin Séry (aka From Overseas), whose saintly guitar tones perfectly complement the lilting strings of the main theme. This interaction of elements creates a finespun variation in every repetition, so that the central phrase resembles a celestial body against the horizon, offset by a degree or two with each rise and fall.

Frizzell cites a major inspiration for Caelum from his wife, whose particular appreciation of Orchestral Tape Studies (2019) led the two to discuss, during a long road trip to a friend’s wedding, how approaches to patient music could be revisited and refined. He notes, “In many ways, these arrangements feel like love letters, further deepened by the experience of that weekend with new and old friends, celebrating connection, with the knowledge of its impermanence and preciousness.”

“Caelum (No. 3)” maintains that sense of contained infinity, with blossoming brass harmonies in the dominant loop, underscored by haunting drone textures that ebb and flow across the backdrop. Experimental stalwart Benoît Pioulard here contributes a recording from a broken tape machine, whose plaintive flickering adorns the edges, mimicking the film gate of an old projector. A distinct somberness runs through the closing piece, “Caelum (No. 1)”, as a shadowy cello motif wanders like a hungry ghost, searching for resolution, and reverberant, bell-like tones howl across the background, approximating wind through an abandoned house.

The backbone of Caelum’s composition comprises old 78s, reel-to-reel tapes, and manipulated classical recordings, all of which contribute to its unique aura. As part of this release, the original four movements are mirrored by a set of reinterpretations by Slow Blink (aka Amanda Haswell), who takes each one deeper into deterioration with her own array of vintage analogue machines, guitar, keys, and hand-hewn processing. Haswell states, “Listening to Caelum was like being in a dream I had many moons ago; through repetition, as with the memory of a dream, discoveries are made that present a new way to understand the same idea.”

Common to the elegant works that form the two halves of Caelum is an overwhelming sense of the uncanny, like seeing footage of Yosemite from a hundred years ago, and feeling its eternity in contrast with human fragility. Frizzell is known not only for his tape-worn, classically inspired solo output, but also as an open-minded collaborator, whose sonic fingerprints become more distinct with each work. On “A Whisper”, his deep bass interweaves with Séry’s tonally rich guitar clouds, billowing through chord changes with the cadence of an epic impressionist poem. Its pacing evokes the sensation of a loop, but there is a slight evolution with every pass, and the subtle pitching-down of certain elements creates a slow motion effect that intimates the infinite whims of weather and decay.

With “Kinderness” and “Canaan”, Luke Entelis (Viul) and Thomas Meluch (Benoît Pioulard) present their first new music since 2022. With a collaborative history dating to the early 2000s, Entelis and Meluch bring a particularly diverse palette of textures to “Kinderness”, an 18-minute suite composed especially for this release. It begins with a tape-saturated guitar loop that pushes the limits of its iron oxide, and melts into a midsection of subcutaneous analogue synths and distant melodies. Its final act is a direct nod to the pair’s early post-rock and shoegaze work, as a bed of grainy field recordings gives way to a syrupy loop of bent-neck, fuzzed-out guitars and pillowy drums, all underscoring Pioulard’s trademark baritone vocals, mixed just beyond a point of clarity in a way that makes you want to turn it up that much louder. “Canaan” is a brief coda, pairing Viul’s melancholy Minilogue warble with Pioulard’s multi-tracked vocal loops and soft-edged bells.

On “Coronation Ring”, the signature guitar drift of Wayne Robert Thomas meets the misty stillness of Marc Ertel’s electronics and treatments. Throughout its patient unfurling, reverberant anomalies play across the stereo field, and a progression of synthesized strings wanders in and out of soft dissonance, suggesting a precarious mystery in the wires. Thomas created the primary drone theme just after learning of the death of a personal hero, the theorist and composer Phill Niblock – he describes his motivation as an “attempt to capture those first moments of experiencing a life-altering piece of music, while also reflecting on inevitable feelings of loss and the pendulum of hibernation during winter months.”

Koselig is a distinctly Norwegian term that describes ineffable feelings of comfort, generosity, and intimacy, and can be applied equally to experiences, objects, and people. According to the artist, its environment “is meant to evoke the aftermath of a collapsed society,” but does so while pulling every possible vestige of beauty from the ruins, with the reverent melancholy of a classical requiem.

Like previous album Ghost (2024), there is a distinct narrative arc to this hour-long experience, but its wayposts appear unhurriedly, as mesmerizing stretches of rippling hum give way to the sudden, plaintive quivers of old cassettes, or the rumble of industrial growls far in the distance. In contrast to that album and its purgatory aura, though, From the End of Time has a slowly beating heart, giving the vague sense of an indifferent sun that still shines, albeit through a deep, crimson haze.

“Overture” places the listener in this terrain with crescendoing, choral grandeur that reaches a cinematic peak, before quietly vanishing, cloaked in an uncertain mist. On “Back to Dust”, a lonesome organ motif curls and dimly shimmers across the debris field, breaking the narcotic tone but only opening the eye halfway. Throughout this first section of the album, there is a torch-lit search for resolution through blinding fog, while the sense of some aftershock seems always to be waiting at the edges.

“Pseudotruth” embodies this uncertainty, as a mechanical loop comes to life, accompanied by the remnants of a pealing voice trapped in static, calling out from nowhere, to no one in particular. “New Gods” offers a tonal shift, as a sprightly, automated piano flickers across the backdrop, and the entire scene evaporates into the muted twinkle of rust-ravaged windchimes, eliciting the uncanny echoes of bustling humanity.

These pieces emerged from the artist’s preoccupation with man’s loss of logic, ethics, and independent thought on a broad scale, as well as the effects of those things when exchanged through commercial means. Despite the grim reality of such trends, though, he finds room to sculpt his mournful textures into something blissed out, as on “Endless Infinite”, where a pair of alternating chords creates a whirl of pure, angelic ambience above a glowing bass drone, marking out the fraught moments of a new reality.

Similarly, “Wings of Oblivion” and “A Broken Hope” are shot through with a tenuous sweetness – in the context, the cautious mind wonders whether it might be salvation, or only a phantom. Untethered harmonic arrangements waft through waves of tape hiss and analog decay, making for one of the record’s most heartfelt passages of sheer beauty. Across the final stretch of From the End of Time, redemption grows ever further out of reach – the dark winds take over, the gears are clogged with grease, and the sky is choked with soot.

“Nightlands” combines gas mask breathing and a lonely cycle of heartsick harmony, reaching out from a cavernous depth, while “Lost Futures” closes the album with ambiguity, nevertheless serving as a spiritual bookend to its beginning. What remains in its wake is the complicated question of how to feel while witnessing the consumption of something once loved, and the loss of its promises. There may be cold comfort in the abstraction of memory, but by forecasting this bleak outcome, Black Swan allows us an aural meditation on death by a thousand cuts, with a cascade of affecting grace.

Written, recorded, produced, and mixed by Black Swan
Mastered at Ambient Mountain House by James Bernard
Design and layout by Black Swan

© 2025 Past Inside the Present
℗ 2025 Past Inside the Present Publishing (BMI)
This is PITP48

Pressing Details:

160g audiophile black vinyl record housed in a 3mm matte jacket. Keep Your Soul Young is built on a confident rawness and worldliness, influenced by Amparo’s upbringing in the American Southwest, subsequent years of international travel, and a life-changing love that led to her current home in Gothenburg, Sweden. Across its ten pieces, she offers a rare combination of cinematic grandeur and withdrawn, tender grace, brimming with gorgeous melodies and head-nodding drum programming.

Opener, “Space Us Out”, enters on a swell of synthesized strings and gripping low end kick pattern, immediately summoning a city-sized emotional pull. Its seeds floated in on a Zen koan shared by a friend. The koan led me to read Adam Frank’s book Light of the Stars. I pondered questions it raised about Earth, humanity, and our place in the cosmos while I was still immersed in the haiku of the Japanese poet Bashō, whose work had figured large in the creation of lightness—poems such as:

the rough sea
stretching out toward Sado—
the Milky Way

This koan-inspired leap into space was congruent with my current work on lightness while propelling me forward in a new sonic direction, so I began exploring ideas, scribbling notes in my composition book, and reading other sources for inspiration.

I wrote the first tracks for Forbidden Questions in Space for piano and voice. The songs had lyrics such as the lines at the top from “dark adaptation,” a Valentine to my sister, with whom I’d shared many concerns and conversations about the state of the world. For lyrical inspiration, I searched for classic Zen koans and came across Joan Sutherland’s brilliant essay, “Koans for Troubled Times,” published in the Buddhist magazine Lion’s Roar. Though I’m not a Buddhist, Sutherland’s writing soothed my troubled mind and heart. As much as today’s near-apocalyptic times may seem unprecedented, Sutherland’s account of China during the birth of the Zen koan tradition reveals how past times have likewise been dire. Koan practice emerged as the once-prospering empire of China was being devastated by a decade of civil war, starvation, and disease that led to the deaths of two thirds of its people. Amid this cataclysm, the Chinese Buddhist tradition known as Chan—which later gave rise to Zen Buddhism in Japan—turned to koans as a way to engage with life. As Sutherland notes:

“Twelve hundred years ago, a few Chan innovators had a fierce desire to leap out of the usual ways of doing things and into new territory—not to escape the catastrophe looming around them, but to more fully meet it. If they were going to be helpful they had to develop—and quickly—flexibility of mind, an easy relationship with the unknown, and a robust willingness to engage with life as they found it. Perhaps most importantly, they needed a really big view. For them, Chan practice wasn’t about getting free of the world; it was about getting free in the world. The first koans are field notes from their experiment in the getting of this kind of freedom.”

Sutherland goes on to ask, “What does it mean for us to be wholeheartedly part of this world? How do we fall willingly into the frightened, blasted, beautiful, tender world, just as it is?” My heart lightened as I read her questions, and I returned to her essay time and again.

Meeting the world wholeheartedly, just as it is. Getting free in the world, seeking a big view, and asking thought-stopping questions. Seeing the world with fresh eyes. Interrupting the energies of strife and socially transmitted stress to transmute them into deeper, slower, more nourishing resonances. Developing flexibility, courage, and friendliness with the unknown. Asking myself: Who do I want to be in these times? Running experiments. Practicing dying. Making sonic koans for troubled times. Hopefully somehow being of service in sharing them. These were my lodestars as I created Forbidden Questions in Space, which unfolded in spiral waves over the next few years. The music’s form changed from piano-based lyrical songs to experimental sonic collages, mainly vocal, mostly wordless, all improvised ambient and drone works studded with bits of delicate noise. In Four Parts succinctly establishes a beautiful but shadowy gravitas that is core to the PITP catalog, and that each artist has explored throughout successive releases in numerous, genre-defining ways. It’s the closest this set gets to hopefulness, but is still tempered by a wordless emotional heft that can only be summoned by the most world-weary craftsmanship.

On “Part III”, Black Swan’s signature soot and static rise and recede around a simple, 3-note theme, as orchestral elements list and warble on an uneasy, storm-plagued sea, staggering toward a rocky shore. “Part IV”, the longest section of the suite, ties together the themes and textures explored across the previous three: decaying tape loops, knotty drones, subterranean bass rumbles, majestic synth reverberations, and towering, ecstatic grace. One hopes this is what the apocalypse sounds like, whether we are swallowed in time by the crimson sun, or in the short term by our own poisonous faults.

In Four Parts’ iconic and disquieting cover art, created by Nathan Abels, features a herd of semi-silhouetted rabbits in mid-stride, a visual allegory of innocence and dread that perfectly suits the album’s contrasts. Whether it’s through Irisarri’s celestial long-form albums or his lauded audio engineering credentials for countless artists and labels, Irisarri’s consistent dedication to his craft never wavers from the forefront.

While Irisarri’s compositions typically field an array of modern ambient overtones threaded through oceanic symphonies with tape loops, bowed electric guitar and vast washes of overdriven sound, his recent debut album for Dais Records, Peripeteia, portray these common themes giving way to metal and classical influences that emphasizes Irisarri’s melancholic tendencies. These unique overtures, coupled with his signature layering of distortion and bleached-out textures, fabricate an audible environment that would seemingly be at odds with, yet gracefully complement each other. In Irisarri’s own words, “My previous works internalize any exterior forces or circumstances, while trying to make sense of the world. Peripeteia reverses that approach, focusing on the personal in order to tell a wider human story.”

The emotional depth found throughout Peripeteia is impeccably on display with the track, Mellified. A collaboration with Spanish composer Yamila, the choral arrangements bring to mind the sacred music of Arvo Pärt, while her voice combines the Andalusian “Cante jondo” style with medieval modes, almost drowning in layers of octave fuzz distortion and dystopian synths patterns. On Arduous Clarity, the bright arpeggiating melody that churns throughout, offers the initial glimmer of optimism in an otherwise decaying tale of personal turmoil. This encouraging glimpse is short lived however, as the song Refuge/Refuse seemingly plummets into the mourning depths of somber despair. A chorus of voices steadily crawls from its desolate terrain – a sea of broken spirits, eternally resigned to strain and bellow their final lament. Fright and Control, a piece which is equally soul churning, seems to possess a satisfying resolve, as if after years of searching, one’s very salvation has been laid to rest through the acceptance of mortality and the enlightenment in death. Irisarri’s complexity is utilized to a forcible success, slowly pulsing throughout the foreground of his audience, further emphasizing the impending dread of resolve.

Lawrence English - Strategies (against conformity)
Leandro Fresco - Vocals on “I Still Have The Sun To Cast A Light”
Orlando Méndez - Guitars, voice on “Refuge/Refuse”
Yamila - Vocals and choral arrangements on “Mellified”

Recorded in Buenos Aires, Brussels, London, New York, and Stockholm during 2018 & 2019.
Mixed at Black Knoll Studio (NY)
Mastered by Heba Kadry

Artwork & Layout by Nathaniel Young
Images by RAI

160g audiophile black vinyl record housed in a 3mm jacket. Flatland/Spaceland is 20 minutes of music that blurs the borderlines between ambient and neoclassical to create an engaging and meditative listening experience.

The first side of the 2 track EP, titled Flatland is a glacial ambient creation made using pedal steel guitar processed through multiple effects together with field recordings and occasional revelatory sounds from Himalayan singing bowls. Spaceland, on side B, takes the composition and refracts it through an orchestral lens. A 26-piece ensemble delicately creep in to the calming world echoed by side A. As the piece develops the result is something more akin to a film soundtrack. Occupying the space between ambient and neoclassical, Flatland / Spaceland by Joe Harvey-Whyte invites us to take a step back from the busyness of our lives for 20 minutes and reflect. Inspired by Edwin A. Abbott’s 1884 novel Flatland, in which a two-dimensional protagonist encounters a three-dimensional world for the first time, and struggles to explain it to his fellow natives of the 2D Flatland, Joe Harvey-Whyte attempts conceptually to give depth to what that which appears flat.

A departure from the instruments usual confines, Flatland on side A of the EP see’s the pedal steel cast out from the Honky Tonks and into the stratosphere. Joe Harvey-Whyte uses the pedal steel’s expressive power processed through effects to create an unrecognisable ethereal sonic landscapes reminiscent of Brian Eno, Stars of the Lid and Taylor Deupree, who mastered Flatland/Spaceland. Inspired by the novel, Flatland seeks to explore and evoke that which lies just beyond our perceptual field. Its glacial unfolding is peppered with strange sounds that somehow feel familiar, the pedal steel is at times almost choral. The granular imperceptibility surrounding the source of the sounds used in the piece are designed to make the listener lean in to discern what is happening. The deeper listening approach may bring a greater sense of experience to the music, but it’s also possible to listen to the piece in a passive way, allowing it to wash over the listener, which generates a sense of a calming icy landscape.

Occupying side B is Spaceland, an orchestral refraction of Flatland, with Joe Harvey-Whyte working closely with Ell Kendal, a sound artist and orchestrator from London. Kendal is known for his use of experimental scoring techniques to create notated works for classical ensemble. His influences range from avant-garde composers and performance artists, to early religious musics, and ritual, and you can hear that in his interpretation of the original piece here. The process of orchestrating and recording all the instruments for Spaceland took around a year, with additional challenges to the process caused by working through COVID. Everything was recorded at Joe’s studio in North London, with the exception of a few remote recordings. Joe says of the process of orchestrating the piece “Ell’s scores are quite idiosyncratic and were more of a gentle guide than a definitive representation of the piece as it should be played. Flatland was an improv creation and I wanted this orchestral refraction to embody that level of randomness and chance. Many of the beautiful blossoming moments in Spaceland came about by ‘accident’”.

On his the process behind making this EP, Joe says “with my music I often like to create a sonic landscape and just sit there. Breathing slowly and contemplating. When composing, my pieces allow me to take some time out from the fast paced nature of much of life here in London. The pedal steel is manipulated through effects beyond recognition. I didn’t really set out to make a “pedal steel” ambient EP. More that the pedal steel is my expressive tool and the means by which I can access a whole range of different tonalities which perhaps others might get with synths, voice or classical instruments like strings.”

(C) None More Records 2021
NMR008
Initial Run of 300 10” vinyl and full digital EP.

Flatland:
Pedal Steel, Processing, Sound Design | Joe Harvey-Whyte
Gong, Himalayan Bowls | Marco Florio

Spaceland:
Violins | Clementine Brown & Duncan Menzies
Clarinet & Bass Clarinet | Robbie Marrs
Oboe & Cor Anglais | Penelope Carter
Flute & Piccolo | Frederico Paixão
Double Bass | Andy Waterworth
French Horn | Derryck Nasib
Trumpet | Harry Evans
Cello | Will Langstone
Viola | Gazel Algan

Composer | Joe Harvey-Whyte
Orchestrator & Co-composer "Spaceland" | Ell Kendall
Mixing Engineer "Spaceland" | Ben Behesty
Mastering | Taylor Deupree - 12k Mastering

Recorded at Whyte Noise Studios | London, UK

Front cover photograph | Cailean Couldridge
Cover layout & design | El Señor Gomez

160g audiophile black vinyl record housed in a 3mm jacket. While this combination is new to the Agile Experiments umbrella, these three musicians have been working together for many years under different guises such as Forest Binary & I Work In Communications, as well as featuring on various funk compilations on Fortune Cut Records. The style of music was not discussed but rather each individual was asked to bring to the performances their own character. These were later edited down by Dave who then presented 74 individual cuts to choose from. The record is built on breaks and beats layered with eerie loops and effects, calling on hip hop, post-punk, psychedelia, dub and further out-there experimental textures. ‘Loukoumades’ brings to mind the textures of El-P’s production work for the likes of Cannibal Ox or DJ Shadow in his Endtroducing era, whilst the live drums and bass guitar give the album a real energy and tightness reminiscent of Portishead’s Third or Can at their funkiest.

Released on September 20th, first Single ‘Got Something’ showcases one of the dubbier grooves on the record, with the crisp beat and deep bass line peppered with dub echo, cold, swirling synths and ghostly textures. It’s a neck-snapper of a tune aimed squarely at the bass bins.

Second single ‘Bubble Smoke’, out on October 18th, is built around a looping groove of a bass line, as if aliens were delivering an unhinged attempt at For The Love Of Money. The drum beat locks in and dripping pads and textures push the tune into killer new territory.

The third single ‘Dark Agogo’, which will drop on November 8th just before the album, showcases more of the experimental side of the album where layers of wavey, atmospheric synths bounce around a percussion heavy groove.

Like Dilla’s Donuts though, the album is best enjoyed as a whole. There is a unique sound running all the way through the album, from the heavy hitting opening shuffle beat of ‘Gang Swerve’ through to the static funk of ‘F**k*d It’ and the industrial sounds found in ‘Simple As’ that could only come from such the killer group of musicians. A frequent collaborator and friend of Irisarri, Castrejón's imagery impeccably complements the album's mood and themes, extending a compelling invitation for listeners to explore its aural world visually.

"Anyone who has heard or been touched by the amazing ambient music of New York based composer and producer Irisarri in recent years will be delighted to see that the long out of print tape Midnight Colours is finally getting a meticulously remastered edition. The album is an exploration of the relationship between humanity and time, hinged around a sonic interpretation of the Doomsday Clock and the existential vulnerabilities it implies. Inviting contemplation, it also feels like a stirring call for action - its plangency and mournfulness actually seems way more of a clarion call than more avowedly polemical music could muster. As ever with Irisarri's work, there's a gorgeous serenity to opener "The Clock" but also presentiments of anxiety and danger. "Falling Curtain" is a swelling surge that builds and fades with all the poise and poignancy of Lull and Stars Of The Lid; "Oh Paris, We Are Fucked" (greatest ambient title ever?) glides and shudders like a glacier; and it's those creepy edges of the sound that draw your ear in, as if beyond the titanic structures within the music you can hear biological sentience flickering into - and out of - life. For such immersive music, which usually denotes calm and wellness, Irisarri's creations genuinely touch on being too much for the soul, a sudden vertiginous apprehension of ancient geologic forces and time. The penultimate track "Drifting" leaves you stranded on an ice floe as six months of light slips into a half-year of darkness before the closer "A Ruptured Tranquillity" builds subterranean bass into a heartbeat too slow to be human, but too instinctively empathetic to be anything other than the sad dying pulse of the planet itself. Most notably, the main threads weaving through these eight pieces are Séry’s experience as a new father and his graduate studies in Environmental Philosophy, both of which infuse the album’s sound with the kind of awestruck humility usually reserved for gazing up at timeless, cloud-draped peaks.

“Appalaches” opens with a gathering storm of overlapping tapped strings and a hopeful, resolute warmth that transforms into post-rock grandeur with krautrock pulses. It is a gripping statement of intent that establishes a new dimension to the sonic palette Séry has honed across his own body of work, as well as collaborations with the likes of zakè, City of Dawn, and awakened souls. On “Breathe”, we hear seemingly endless layers of depth, from slow-motion melodic respirations, to a glittering backdrop of aqueous drone, to the cleanly intoned bass guitar in the foreground. In these delicate arrangements, each note is a fluttering kite string, subject to the air currents that shift and swirl through the mix.

Dedicated to Séry’s infant son, “Howl of a Wolf, For E.” overflows with reverent adoration; reflecting on his inspiration, he notes, “Seeing him innocently discover the world and nature was totally in line with my philosophical studies, because through his eyes, an ant, a flower, a tree, and a bear are equally important and fascinating.” The humming undertow of “Le Secret Des Dunes” bears a kinship with the bass-led works of labelmate and mastering engineer James Bernard, reprising the woodsy tonalities that introduced the album and creating a throughline of organic grace that deepens in the context of its title. He explains, “‘Thinking like a mountain’ is a concept from Aldo Leopold, where one sees everything as an ecosystem, a vast interconnection in which all actions affect the ecological balance… I think this philosophy can and should be applied to everything we do.”

“Inner Necessity” is one of a few pieces here that date back to the era of Home, having been refined as a standard in Séry’s live performance repertoire. Here, form falls away and sustained, bowed notes pierce the calm like bursts of light, occupying the whole stereo field with tactile texture and full-spectrum bliss, a sunrise seen from atop a remote cliffside. By the time we reach the album closer, “Infinite”, there is a sense of only getting started: a languid guitar theme is slowly overcome by avalanches of immense, harmonic drones and striking beauty. It is a finale of tremendous substance and movement that nevertheless feels weightless as it evaporates from the speakers.

As he navigates a life of renewed understanding and purpose, an artist like Séry uses his craft to create views of what could be, from a reality where genuine creativity and environmental awareness are increasingly complicated prospects. Thinking Like a Mountain is his undaunted statement of soft power amid the noise, haste, and myopia; “In other words,” he says, “it is the peaceful strength I hope to always demonstrate and pass on to my son as he grows up and we face the uncertainties of the future together.”

RIYL: Fripp & Eno, Harmonia, Chihei Hatakeyama, Windy & Carl, Stars of the Lid, Loren Connors, Andrew Chalk

All music written, arranged, performed, and produced by Kévin Séry. A few little obstacles and troubles occurred during the nine months, so my anxious nature at the time generated in me the need to somehow express the feelings in a record, where I conveyed the worries that a father, especially a musician that needs his own moments for playing, may have in terms of an expected potential future lack of time and energies.

I also decided to involve fellow musicians I got to know at the time, like Maurizio Abate (guitar), Enrico Coniglio (guitar and organ), with whom afterwards I would have made full albums - but you can find here the first traces of our collaboration. There were Andrea Serrapiglio (cello) and Cristiano Lupo (bass), that I knew for quite some time, and featuring female voices. I asked Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock (that I discovered through her marvellous presence on a Doug Sharin solo album) if she wanted to sing on a track, and she did, providing her own lyrics. The American singer Jenny Oakley, aka Empty Vessel Music, did the same on track one, as well as a glitching sample from Nicola Ratti is also featured.

The central piece of the whole album can be considered “Family Man”, a sort of cover from a song by Black Flag, totally reversed by my wife Gaia Margutti. The beautiful, haunting sleeve art features the unsmiling bust of a porcelain woman with black eyes from whose neck emerges a full bouquet of roses.
Frequently the album is beautiful on its own terms. Consider the opening track, “Bird’s Eye” which features an Eno-esque piano walking over cinematic strings and a lazy harmonica. The piece sounds like an orchestra tuning up before a concert, a call to adventure for the rest of the album. Perhaps more fittingly, it reminds of latter day Talk Talk with tensile strings, errant notes, silent interludes, slow motion piano.

Further beauty exists in “Animating Old Postcards,” which is built around a minstrel’s guitar and the ethereal voice of Finnish artist Violeta Päivänkakkara and feels like a springtime return, a much-needed break in the clouds, a patch of blue after heavy storms.

With that said, the album’s title track is undeniably terrifying. Led by the quivering, indecipherable falsetto of Jessica Constable and a fearsome piano arpeggio, “King of Corns” sounds something like a witch’s curse or an oracle warning of things to come. The last track on the album, “Full Blank (No Stars)” is a dark aria and again features Ms. Constable, who is not so much singing here as reciting musically, as if in an opera.

Clearly, Coniglio’s King of Corns is a marked change in direction from the warm sounds of the last MHS album, Sleet. More sound art, the new work is riddled with anxiety, hesitation, fear. It’s hard to imagine listening to this in polite company or before going to bed. But ultimately the album is successful in that the work demands the listener engage directly with it to form her own interpretation of the material, and in this collaboration she becomes implicit in its creation, a kind of co-author of each track.

Often King of Corns sounds like a descent into madness, a journey through the forest of the dead to the darkest parts of the self. But where there is death there is opportunity for life, for new beginnings.
