A powerful aurochs charges across a rugged grassland, its enormous curved horns silhouetted against a brilliant golden sunset. Dust and loose earth scatter beneath its hooves as the massive animal races forward, with distant hills and a winding river stretching across the landscape.
The aurochs (Bos primigenius) was a large species of wild cattle that once roamed much of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Standing up to approximately six feet tall at the shoulder, large males were considerably bigger than most modern domestic cattle. They typically had dark coats, muscular bodies, and impressive horns that curved outward and upward.
Aurochs were the wild ancestors of modern domestic cattle, first domesticated thousands of years ago. They inhabited a variety of environments, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and were depicted in prehistoric cave paintings.
