    Thomas (c. 1-c. 52), Apostle and Martyr
Thomas was one of Jesus’s Twelve Apostles. He is most famous as “doubting Thomas” because he refused to believe in the resurrection until he placed his hands on the wounds of the risen Jesus. For this reason, Thomas’ profound faith is often overlooked. His proclamation to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!” is one of the disciples’ earliest and most direct affirmations of belief in the deity of Jesus. Of the twelve Apostles, it is believed that Thomas journeyed the farthest to spread the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. He traveled to India and established churches. The ancient Saint Thomas Churches in India today trace their lineage back to Thomas’ mission work. Certain traditions believe that Thomas also traveled to China and many other regions of the Far East. Thomas was martyred in India with a spear and some traditions hold that his body was buried in Mylapore in India.
