Seshat
Seshat the goddess of measurement, astronomy, architecture and writing. I wrote a brief paper on her for a tutorial during my studies. She holds a notched palm frond (renp.t = year) on which she keeps a tally with her scribal stylus. At the bottom of the palm frond is a frog/tadpole (the mathematical symbol for 100,000) on a shenu ring which symbolises eternity. Her distinctive dress in a leopard skin echoes the garb of the priests and record keepers of Ancient Egypt and the spots of the skin are frequently represented in Egyptian art as stars. Seshat was integral to the Stretching the Cord ritual, the initial measurement and laying out of the foundations of a temple. The Ancient Egyptians were accomplished mathematicians, applying their knowledge to the measurement of time, accounting and architecture. After a link found by Julia Thorne I am of a mind to think that Seshat's enigmatic symbol might be a representation of a sundial although at the time of painting I thought it might be a sprouting seedling under a reed enclosure due to the Egyptian year starting with the heliacal rising of the star Sopdet (Sirius) which heralded the beginning of the Innundation. Some Egyptian Math problems for those so inclined Date: 2013 Media: Sennelier gum arabic paints, ink on papyrus
