Sun Worshipper
Featured in Song Birds on North America While enjoying the summer sun myself, I came across this beautiful white crowned sparrow sunbathing on a fence post. The warmth from the post was much more inviting than my presence was disturbing, so I was able to get much closer than I would usually expect. White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrappear) winter over much of North America to grace our gardens and favorite trails (they live in parts of the West year-round). The smart black-and-white head, pale beak, and crisp gray breast combine for a dashing look – and make it one of the surest sparrow identifications in North America. Watch for flocks of these sparrows scurrying through brushy borders and overgrown fields, or coax them into the open with backyard feeders. As spring approaches, listen out for this bird’s thin, sweet whistle. Citizen Science, BirdSleuth For complete information on this species, visit The Birds of North America Online. Captured at Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, with a Nikon D2Xs, and Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 lens, with a 1.7 teleconverter, ISO 250, f4.8, 1/800s, handheld.
