Medieval Sator - Rotas square
This image is from a 12th century Latin manuscript of charms, herbal remedies, astrology and mysticism. The Sator or Rotas square has its roots in Ancient Rome, but became a widespread symbol of magic and mysticism throughout the medieval period. No one knows why this is. While it is possible that it had magical connotations from the pre-christian Roman Empire, it may have started out simply as a word puzzle, and somehow gained magical meaning later on.
