Surreal Death Moth
Death's head hawkmoth has been one of the most powerful symbols od supernatural and evil throughout human history. Reason for this is that the members of species of the genus Acherontia are easily distinguishable by the vaguely human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax. It has been used alot as a symbol in popular culture, including movies, books and artwork. The species names atropos, lachesis and styx are all from Greek myth and related to death. The first refers to the member of the three Moirai who cuts the threads of life of all beings; the second to the Moira who allots the correct amount of life to a being; and the last refers to the river of the dead. In addition the genus name Acherontia is derived from Acheron, a river of Greek myth that was said to be a branch of the river Styx. This moth has fascinated artists for a long time, and this is my surreal interpretation of it. I went overboard with skulls and eyeballs, added some horns and bone like structures... Overall, I spent like 30 hours designing this tiny beast to make it look evil, macabre, spooky, gothic and extra cool. I hope you like it, I really enjoyed drawing it...
