INSTALL AND CONFIGURE COMPUTER SYSTEMS

UNIT OF COMPETENCY :

MODULE TITLE : INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING COMPUTER SYSTEMS

MODULE DESCRIPTION : This module covers the outcomes required in installing and
configuring desktop and workstation computers systems. It
consists of competencies to assemble computer hardware,
install operating system and drivers for peripherals/devices,
and install application software as well as to conduct testing
and documentation

NOMINAL DURATION : 50 hours

QUALIFICATION LEVEL : NC II

SUMMARY OF LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this module the students/trainees must be able to:

LO1. Assemble computer hardware

LO2. Prepare installer

LO3. Install operating system and drivers for peripherals/ devices

LO4. Install application software

LO5. Conduct testing and documentation

LO1. ASSEMBLE COMPUTER HARDWARE

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Unit assembly is planned and prepared to ensure OH&S policies and procedures are
followed in accordance with systems requirements
2. Materials necessary to complete the work are identified and obtained in accordance
with established procedures and checked against systems requirements
3. Tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out the installation work are
obtained in accordance with established procedures and checked for correct
operation and safety
4. Computer hardware is assembled in accordance with established procedures and
systems requirements
5. Basic-input-output-system (BIOS) configuration is performed in accordance with
hardware requirements

CONTENTS:
-
- Plan and prepare unit assembly
- Identify and obtain the materials, tools and equipment in accordance with job
requirements.
- Follow the OH & S policies and procedures to ensure operation safety
requirements
- Assemble computer hardware in accordance with job and system
requirements
- Configuration of BIOS in accordance with hardware requirements.

CONDITIONS:

The students/trainees must be provided with the following:


- Computer system
- Anti-static wrist strap
- Set of screw driver
- Cutter
- Allen wrench (0.05 – 0.25 inch)
- Flashlight
- Sharp pointed tweezers
- Cable tie
- Manual
- Personal protective equipment(PPE)
METHODOLOGIES:

 Group discussion

 Hands-on

LO2. PREPARE INSTALLER

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Portable bootable devices are created in accordance with software manufacturer


instruction
2. Customized installers are prepared in accordance with software utilization guide and
end user agreement.
3. Installation of portable applications are carried out in accordance with software user
guide and software license

CONTENTS:
- Create bootable device
- Customize installation in accordance with software manufacturer EULA.
- Installing portable application.

CONDITIONS:

The students/trainees must be provided with the following:


- Open source portable applications
- Utility software
- Manual
- Flash drive
- Computer system

METHODOLOGIES:

 Lecture-demonstration
 Self-paced instruction
 Group discussion

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

 Hands-on
 Direct observation
 Practical demonstration

LO3. INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEM AND DRIVERS FOR PERIPHERALS/ DEVICES

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Operating system (OS) is installed in accordance with established installation


procedures and to comply with end-user requirements
2. Peripherals/devices drivers are installed and configured in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions and/or OS installation procedures.
3. OS and drivers updates/patches are accessed and installed in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements
4. On-going checks of the quality of the work are undertaken in accordance with
established procedures

CONTENTS:
- Install Operating System
- Install and configure peripherals/devices n accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions
- Updating drivers and peripherals
- Undertake on-going checks to ensure quality of work

CONDITIONS:

The students/trainees must be provided with the following:


- Operating system installer
- Printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, webcam and other peripherals
- Drivers
- Utility software
- Notebook and pen

METHODOLOGIES:

LO4. INSTALL APPLICATION SOFTWARE

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Application software are installed based on software installation guides, end-user


requirements and software license agreement
2. Variation to application software installation is carried out in accordance to
customer/client requirements
3. Software updates are accessed and installed in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendations and requirements

CONTENTS:
- Install application software based on installation guide and software license
agreement
- Carry out variation to application software installation
- Access and install software updates

CONDITIONS:

The students/trainees must be provided with the following:


- Productivity tools
- Utility software
- Internet connection
- Manual
- Computer system

METHODOLOGIES:

 Lecture-demonstration
 Self-paced instruction
 Group discussion

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

 Hands-on
 Direct observation
 Practical demonstration

LO5. CONDUCT TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Devices / systems and/or installation is tested to determine whether it conforms to


requirements
2. Stress test is conducted to ensure reliability of equipment in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions and system requirements
3. 5S and 3Rs are followed according to environmental policies
4. Documentation in relation to the test is forwarded to appropriate personnel and/or
authority in accordance with requirements

CONTENTS:
- Test devices/systems and/or installation
- Conduct stress test
- Follow 5S and 3Rs according to environmental policies
- Prepare and forward documentation to appropriate personnel

CONDITIONS:

The students/trainees must be provided with the following:


- Multi-Tester
- Cable tester
- Manual
- Notebook and pen
- Computer systems
- Mirror
- Flash light
- Anti-static wrist strap

METHODOLOGIES:
